2 Managed by UT-Battellefor the Department of Energy

· What: 10 year DOE program to parallelize / scale legacy codes - write new DOE codes to take advantage of leadership computing systems

· Why: To enable scientific discovery and address DOE mission critical problems in the physical, biological, and environmental sciences

Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing (SciDAC)

How:

· Applied math, CS, and physical sciences make proposals that call out specific collaborations

· Institutes and Centers for Enabling Technology drive Scientific Application Partnerships

· 35 projects: 9 centers, 4 institutes, 19 efforts in 12 application areas (Astrophysics, Accelerator Science, Climate, Biology, Fusion, Petabyte data, Materials & Chemistry, Nuclear physics, High Energy physics, QCD, Turbulence, Groundwater)

Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing (SciDAC)

Output:

· Developed over 60 SW packages to solve breadth of SW challenges relevant to today’s multicore environment

Opportunity:

· DOE has never had focused outreach about the potential applicability of this software to private sector SW developers

· DOE recognizes that the cost and difficulty to scalablly parallelize legacy codes can be prohibitive…especially for small busiesses

· Also a challenge for large (Fortune 500) firms that still maintain internal SW development capabilities

Why Reach Out to the Private Sector

Page 7: DOE Software Workshop March 31, 2011 Chicago

Workshop Goals

· Introduce ISVs / industry to this software and its developers

· Explain the process to obtain at no cost

· Include small businesses who are particularly vulnerable to the high cost / difficulty of transitioning legacy codes to multicore

· Identify private sector SW development requirements to help DOE understand areas for collaboration..and potential SBIR topics.

· One day

· “Speed dating” format: Quick hits on a number of SciDAC tools and applications

· Explanation of the SBIR program: how it works

· Overview of key open source licensing concepts (i.e this is readily accessible)

· Discussion of Cost (generally none)

Workshop Agenda

Observations

· 65 attendees representing large and small ISVs, user companies with internal software development capabilities, engineering service firms, universities

· Most firms were not aware of the SciDAC program and the availability of this software

· Most attendees discovered something that they think they can use

· Most attendees wanted more information and we provided contact data for follow up.

· A solid first effort, with room to grow.
