I chose my topic because I have always

thought that a love of reading contributes to a better ability to comprehend and learn. Literacy is important to function in everyday life.

I believe the decreased interest in reading in the world today is in direct correlation with a lack of reading material that interests students.

Why I Chose My Topic

2/3 of students that cannot read proficiently

by the end of the fourth grade will end up in jail or on welfare

According to UNICEF, "Nearly a billion people worldwide are unable to read a book or sign their names and two thirds of them are women.”

Statistics

Page 7: Does Censorship A ffect L iteracy?

In the United States, an estimated 30 million

people over the age of 16 read no better than the average elementary school child.

The ability to read and write is the basis for all other education.

Without literacy skills, today’s adults will struggle to take part in the world around them and fail to reach their full potential as parents, community members, and employees.
