Dog Collar Cover

This collar cover fits your dog’s collar without bunching and it allows the leash hook and dog tags to be accessible. The tab threads through the collar loop and the affixes to the fuzzy side of the Velcro on the outside of the collar cover

Measuring the Collar Measure the width & circumference of the collar

Make sure you consider the thickness of the collar and the buckle. You will need to add to the dimensions to accommodate the thickness For example, some collars double back and some have big buckles The orange collar I needed to add an extra inch to accommodate the thickness. After making one too small I got smart and found the thickest part on the collar and measured the circumference. It measured 4 ¼ so I added ½ inch and then rounded up to 5 inches.

Making the Pattern You can use true grid Tru-Grid Graph Material to size your cover. This is available at fabric stores and it is not expensive. I am making this cover 5 X 24

Pin the pattern down and snip away

I like to iron down my edges before I go to the sewing machine so I start with the ends & then the sides. The cover when folded in half is 4 ¼ X 23 ½

Making the Collar Tab The tab is used as a fastener, it treads through the leash loop and affixes to the collar cover keeping the cover snug and in place. Because my cover is 2 1/2 inches wide the tab will be a 2 ½ X 5 and we will make it with a 5 inch square piece of fabric. We will iron the edges and fold it in half as we did in the previous steps.

Sewing the Collar Tab We are now ready to for the sewing machine…. We start with the tab; we will start on the fold and stitch the tab on three sides.

Sewing the Collar Cover Next we need to prepare the collar cover for attaching the tab.

Unfold the cover and stitch each side down Now we can attach the tab I stitched a square to attach the tab to the collar cover

Now that the tab is on we can stitch the bottom side of the collar cover Stay as close to the edge as you can Once the cover has been stitched you can add the Velcro to the collar cover. Because this is a large cover I used two pieces of Velcro, probably an overkill…

You can use Velcro with adhesive but in addition I would use an all purpose permanent adhesive to insure the bond. I think in the future I will use the non adhesive type and sew it to the collar. I put the fuzzy side of the Velcro on the outside of the collar cover so if any of it is exposed it would not snag on things.

Collar Cover Installation Slip the collar through the collar cover making sure the collar is leash loop down. Buckle the collar on your dog. Slip the tab through the ring on the dog collar and attach the Velcro
