Protect the world fromdeforestation

The environment is to remain in goodconditions for all living things to survive. Denseforests ensure temperate climate patterns andprovide basic needs for human beings.

Today, the world has come under climatechanges triggered by large-scale deforestation. So, deforestation and degradation of naturalresources is in the centre of the attention ofmany countries.

The Ministry of Forestry and the ForestDepartment of the Republic of Korea co-organized the workshop on deduction of carbonemission from deforestation at the ForestDepartment in Nay Pyi Taw on 12 May,focusing on conservation of forests, deductionof air and water pollution, economicdevelopment, and environmental conservation.

Myanmar has preserved a fine traditionof environmental conservation for long. TheEnvironmental Conservation Committeecomprising members from 19 related ministries, for instance, ensures efficient exploitation andsustainable development of natural resources.

It is to avoid harnessing natural resourcesexcessively and throwing away hazardouswastes indiscriminately, which furtherexacerbates air and water pollution. TheMinistry of Forestry and relevant ministriesare responsible for conservation of forests inwatershed areas, forest serves, special teakplantations and biodiversity.

Conservation of natural resources andafforestation make significant contributiontowards environmental conservation andimprovement of the social-status of the people. The public and altruistic organizations shouldtherefore join hands with the government inreducing air and water pollution, curbing theindiscriminate discarding of industrial wastes, boosting economic growth and conserving theenvironment.

University of Toron-to Scarborough doctoralcandidate Devin Bloomhelped conduct the firstichthyological survey onGuyana’s remote Cu-yuni River in January. In the two-week survey,Bloom and otherresearchers caught asmany fish as they could,

eventually collectingmore than 5,000specimens, a UTS re-lease said Friday.

That’s where theproblem came in, Bloomsaid. To get permissionto take the fish out of thecountry for study, theresearchers needed anaccurate count of eachspecies for a detailedreport to the Guyanesegovernment.

Needing to return toNorth America as soonas possible, they had justa few days to identifythousands of fish

After uploadingphotos of all the differentkinds of fish caught, within less than 24 hoursthe researchers’ networkof friends and colleagueshad identified almostevery species. With theidentifications suppliedby a network of “diehardfish-heads,” Bloom said, the team was able todeliver its results to thegovernment and returnhome on schedule.

First Look: BitTorrent’s social channels explainedbehind BitTorrent is itspeer-to-peer techno-logy, which eases theburden of sharing largefiles over the Internet.Typically, a downloadis only as fast as theupload speed where youfile is, but BitTorrentchanges all that. Bysharing bandwidthamong everyone elsewho’s downloading (orhas already downloaded)

the file, the connectionactually gets faster asmore people downloadit.

That quality makesBitTorrent a natural forcasual sharing of, oh Idon’t know, videos—and at a quality that’sseverely lacking inplaces like YouTube. The only thing the serviceneeds to get past is thecumbersome process of

Key facilities inFukushima plant

could have collapsedbefore tsunami

TOKYO, 15 May—Key facilities atthe Fukushima No 1 nuclear powermay have been damaged by the quakeitself that day rather than tsunami-caused power loss that failed thereactor’s cooling function, KyodoNews quoted a utility source saidSaturday.

Data taken by workers enteringthe No 1 reactor building at the crippledplant on the night of 11 March showingthe radiation level was as high as 300millisieverts per hour suggest a largeamount of radioactive materials fromnuclear fuel in the reactor was alreadyreleased.

The findings may call for a reviewof preparedness against quakes atvarious nuclear power stations inJapan as they have primarily focusedon securing auxiliary power suppliesand embankment enhancementagainst tsunami after the Fukushimaplant crisis, assuming that reactorfacilities at the plant were unscathedby trembling.

On 11 March, the power plant was

shut down automatically just past 2:46pm following the magnitude-9 quake.Within an hour, it was hit by at leasttwo rounds of tsunami waves. Theexternal power supply was then shutdown, disabling the emergency corecooling system from injecting waterat 4:36 pm.

It has been thought that powerloss failed the cooling system at theNo 1 reactor, releasing highlyradioactive steam from the reactorpressure vessel.

Kyodo said a source at TEPCOadmitted the possibility of keyfacilities having been compromisedbefore the tsunami waves, saying, “Thequake’s trembling may have causeddamage to the pressure vessel orpipes.”—Xinhua
