Approximately 110 millionroses, mostly red, will be soldand delivered in three dayssurrounding Valentine's Day.The reason red roses are sopopular is because they werethe favorite flowers of Juno, the Roman goddess of love. There are nearly 900 acres ofgreenhouse dedicated to theproduction of fresh-cut rosesin the United States. One acre
of greenhouse rose produc-tion in the United States isvalued at about one milliondollars, which includes thevalue of the plants, green-house structure and land. Al-though California grows 60percent of the roses in theUnited States, the majority ofthose bought for Valentine'sday will have been shippedfrom South America.

Valentine's Day is a holiday duringFebruary that commemorates loveand romance and also the patronSaint Valentine. The history of St.Valentine is shrouded somewhat inmystery, and there are beliefs thatmany different people went by thename St. Valentine. One such individ-ual was a holy priest who served inRome, Italy. Some historians surmisethat he was jailed for defiance duringthe reign of Claudius II, sentenced todeath, and became a religious martyr.Pope Gelasius marked February14 asa celebration in honor of his martyr-dom in 496 AD. Today, the Catholicchurch recognizes at least three dif-ferent martyred saints named Valen-tine or Valentius. So how did St. Valentine's Day
transform from a religious holidayinto one far more secular? During thethird century in Rome, Claudius II de-cided that single men served better assoldiers if they were single and had noattachments at home in the way of awife and family. Thusly, he outlawedmarriage. St. Valentine didn't agreewith the views and reportedly per-formed marriages for young lovers insecret. It is this which may have pro-pelled Valentine's Day to be moreabout love than religious obligation.
Another legend says that Valentinehimself authored the first Valentinecard. It has been rumored he fell inlove with a woman -- the jailer'sdaughter -- while in prison and senther a letter. He signed it, "from yourValentine."No matter the origins of the holiday,
today St. Valentine's Day has becomea day where love is celebrated. Loverssend each other cards and tokens oftheir affections. It is customary to goout for dinner and send flowers.Chocolates and roses seem to gohand-in-hand with Valentine's Dayevents.Although certain customs have be-
come commonplace, some customs ofValentine's Day have fallen by thewayside. One such custom is the"drawing of names" that took place inthe 18th century. Names of men andwomen (equal numbers of each) wereplaced into two different containers.A lottery of sorts took place whereone man's name was drawn andmatched with a woman's name. Thepeople called were called "Valen-tines," and the pairing was consid-ered a good omen of these couplesmarrying later on.Another lost custom was of a man
wearing a paper heart with the person
he loved's name written on it. Theheart was pinned to his sleeve, whichgave way to the expression, "wearingone's heart on one's sleeve." A womancould do the same type of thing bywearing a charm known as a love-badge near her heart.Where now we send out mass-pro-
duced Valentine's Day cards, originalValentine's were handmade and per-
sonalized letters. Within them individ-uals could write their exact senti-ments to a loved one.On February 14th, people nipped
by the love bug partake in manycustoms to show their love. Howwill you show that special someoneyou care this year?

Many Americans and Canadiansknow each February is Black HistoryMonth, a month dedicated to observ-ing the history of the African diasporais several countries outside Africa. The month is meant to educate peopleabout the culture of those, includingAfrican-Americans, who left Africaand celebrate their various achieve-ments in all walks of life. The origins of Black History Month
can be traced to Harvard-trained his-torian Carter G. Woodson and minis-ter Jesse E. Moorland. Woodson andMoorland founded the Association for
the Study of Negro Life and History,or ASNLH. This organization dedicat-ed itself to researching and promotingthe achievements of black Americansand others of African descent. In 1926, the ASNLH sponsored a na-
tional Negro History Week and chosethe second week of February for thecelebration for a very specific reason. The week coincided with the birth-days of Abraham Lincoln, the 16thPresident of the United States whopresided over the end of slavery, andFrederick Douglass, the famed formerslave who rose to prominence as a so-
cial reformer, writer, orator, andstatesman.Negro History Week proved inspiring
to communities across the country, who organized local celebrations andestablished historical clubs to studythe history of black Americans whileeducating others as well. Negro Histo-ry Week proved so popular that, bythe late 1960s, it had evolved intoBlack History Week. Many credit theCivil Rights Movement for the change, which initially took place on collegecampuses. In 1976, President Gerald Ford
called upon the public to honor thehistory and accomplishments of blackAmericans when he officially recog-nized February as Black HistoryMonth.Since Ford's official recognition
more than 35 years ago, each of hissuccessors has designated Februaryas Black History Month. In less than100 years, Woodson and Moorlandwent from honoring the history ofblack Americans to joining the grow-ing list of honorees who are celebrat-ed every February.

Dear God,The other day, a 56-year-old suburban Dallas man facing
marital and financial problems killed his estranged wife, twoteenage children and three other family members on Christ-mas Day while dressed as Santa Claus before turning thegun on himself…
A few days later, a western New York woman sent her hus-band on an errand then used a shotgun to kill her father, her 10-year-old daughter and herself….
Also in Texas……Santa Claus was shot dead by a jealoushusband late Saturday night in a double murder….
Over in New Orleans we read….Detectives have arrestedthe live-in girlfriend of a man shot and killed the day afterChristmas...
In St. Maries, ID: A man has been arrested after a St.Maries woman was shot and killed on Christmas Day…
It has been documented that in Syracuse, NY: A Syracuseman has been arrested on charges of beating his girlfriendto death on Christmas Eve.
All these murders took place on Christmas Day or withina few days of the celebration of Christmas. I am heartbro-ken to hear news of such tragedies. It was my understand-ing that this season was the celebration of the birth of YourSon, Jesus. I was told that He came to save us from oursins. It is very hard for me to comprehend all of the evil thathas taken place in just a few short days. These were just acouple of newspaper clippings that I read. There were nu-merous of murders that occurred all over the world, duringthis same time period.
This is my prayer in response to all of this: That You wouldlook down on all the corruption and begin to put compas-sion, love, forgiveness, and mercy into the hearts of menand women. We need it so desperately. We need to look atmankind as a whole and realize that You made us in Yourimage and in the likeness of Your Son, Jesus.
It doesn’t matter which country we reside in, we all werecreated the same. We all bleed the same. We all breathe thesame air. We all were birthed into this life through ourmother’s womb. Help us to understand and accept our dif-ferences. Help us to see life as You see it. Help us to valuewhat You have given us; LIFE ITSELF.
Please hear my prayer!Marjorie

What’s low in calories, easy to fix, very economicaland satisfying enough to keep you full for hours? That’s a no brainer — it’s the incredible egg. At only70 calories for one large egg (let’s not even begin thepacked with top quality protein, loads of vitaminsand minerals talk), it’s a super way to start your day.
The easy to fix part (a lot of folks don’t believe that)haven’t realized that cooking eggs in a microwave isa total cinch and even children can spray a cup, crack in an egg, swoosh it around a bit, toss in ahandful a cheese and nuke it for 60 seconds. Itslides out onto whole wheat toast and the cup goesinto the dishwasher — done! No time to eat? Justwrap it up in foil and head out the door.
And cost wise, we’re talking about a dime an egg. What kind of breakfast cereal costs a dime a serving?None I want to eat. In fact, a simple omelet, taking lit-tle more than two minutes to fix will make a reallycost effective breakfast, plus you get to recycle what-ever leftovers you have in the fridge for the filling.
When you think of satiety, that’s where eggs reallyshine. The combination of nutrients in that egg, combined with uber-protein is what you want whenyou can’t stop for a mid-morning snack. In fact, research shows that folks that enjoy eggs for break-fast, compared to a high carb entrée, end up con-suming 300 to 500 fewer calories throughout therest of the day since they just aren’t that hungry.
These are all good reasons eggs have been crownedthe gold standard for breakfast, but the nutritionitself (sorry, we just have to mention it) is reason
enough to get your day started with an egg. Eggscontain 14 percent less cholesterol than previouslythought, Vitamin D, choline (for memory health),every vitamin in some amount except Vitamin C,lutein (for eye health), loads of minerals, and the listgoes on — in fact, if you could eat the shell, you’deven have some calcium! And after a night’s fast, fill-ing up with top quality protein gets everything mov-ing and working the way it’s supposed to.
So in this new year, when you Wake up to Eggsand send yourself and the kids off with the perfectbreakfast food — one that’s low in calories, easy tofix, economical, satisfying and infinitely nutritious —you know you are starting the day off to a good beat.
