HAYNES HOUSE OF HOPE CELEBRATES 5 YEARS- TheHaynes House of Hope celebrates five years of serving the communitythis month. In January 2010 Haynes House of Hope moved in its firstresident to the newly constructed facility. Since opening 36 residentshave graced our House and countless families have been touched byour love! Our mission remains the same: to offer spiritual love and con-cern for the terminally ill which is reflected in our work. We open ourhome, our hearts, and our hands to those who require physical care, emotional support and spiritual comfort, regardless of race, color, orcreed without charge. We feel blessed to share in the journey and privi-leged to be present with the family and loved ones. Staffed mostly byvolunteers, Haynes House of Hope has been blessed with hundreds ofthose who serve. In 2013 over 4000 hours were contributed by volun-teers. Volunteers like the founder, Crystal Everdyke, stated "I volunteerbecause my father was in a comfort care home just like this. I willnever forget how much I appreciated the way the volunteers and stafftook such good care of my father and of us. I hope that I can give thesame care and kindnesses to our residents and their families." Anothervolunteer who blesses Haynes House and it's residents had this to sayabout serving "As a retired nurse I realized I missed the patient contact.Although the Haynes House is a different setting than I was used to thecaring is still the same. I love the homey feeling of the house and thebonds you share with the patient and families. I know if I were in thesame position the patient is I would feel so blessed to be surroundedwith all that love and caring. I have always enjoyed helping people andwhat better time to do it then when they truly need it." As a free usefacility, funding is gained by fundraising activities, donations from a gen-erous community and grants. Volunteers were active in 2014 conductingseveral fundraising activities including the Community Coin Drop, BailOut,Basket Party, Bingo, HoeDown, Flocking, BonTon Coupon Books, YardSale, Trek for Hope, Spaghetti Dinner, Hawaii Dinner, and Dollars forHope. In-Kind Donations this yearincluded countless donors. A few to mention are: You Are Never AloneFoundation/Salley Gibney, American Hardware, and Telescope. This listdoes not include all those who donated to our fundraisers! Thank you toall those who bless us with their generosity! DO WE HAVE A LOOMING CRISIS IN THE DAIRY INDUSTRY? It’s not one that willcause immediate carnage to thousands of dairy farms in the coming days or weeks. It will, however, erode consumer confidence in dairy products and farmers’ social license and trustwithin their communities to do business. So what is this crisis? Consumer perception of how dairy farmers care for their animals. “We havea growing trust problem,” says David Pelzer, senior vice president of strategic communications,Dairy Management, Inc. “Thirty-five percent of the millennial generation now believes dairy farm-ers abuse their animals and that more than50% of farms have a problem with animalcare,” he says. These consumer percep-tions are alarming and cannot be ignored,Pelzer says. Millennials are the generationof consumers born between the early 1980sand early 2000s. There are more than 80million of them in the U.S.—the largest co-hort in history and more populous than babyboomers. And oh, by the way, millennialsare now raising the next generation of con-sumers. Unlike baby boomers who get theirnews from network TV and newspapers, millennials are connected to the Internet and social media 24/7—right where animal activists, suchas PETA, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and Mercy for Animals live and thrive. These groups’ common goal is to put an end to animal agriculture, Pelzer says.Animal abuse videos, which are yesterday’s news on national networks and newspapers, never dieon the Internet. From the consumer polling mentioned previously, they are having a dangerous, corrosive impact. “Consumers who have never been on a dairy farm don’t know the differencebetween egregious animal abuse and accepted dairy management practices, when a video makes itall look bad,” Pelzer says. What can you do? First, don’t assume such a video couldn’t be created on your farm.Gary Conklin, a dairy cattle broker from Columbus, Ohio, buys close-up heifers, calves them on hisfarm and then sells them as freshened heifers to farmers. His operation was the subject of anabuse video in May 2010.The incident cost him his milk market, community trust and even physicalthreats to him, his family and his business that required police protection. His advice:·Know your employees. Do thorough background checks on job applicants, difficult as that can be.·Have legally binding contracts with employees that specifically state no animal abuse will betolerated.·Conduct third-party animal welfare audits of your operation to evaluate your animal care andhandling practices. Involve employees so they know what is expected. “Audits should be doneannually,” he says. “I think we’re to that point, not only for our own individual protection but for theprotection of the industry as a whole.”
