Encouraging Active Participation in InnovationJurong Shipyard’s annual Workplace Safety and Health Innovation Teams Convention was organised on May 25, 2010 as part of efforts to encourage active involvement by employees in innovating work processes for productivity, safety and workplace improvements.

Winning Projects

The Machinery and Electrical Department developed the Dynamic Tripod in their quest to streamline the assembly, installation and lifting processes involved in thrusters installation.

The innovation is a specially designed platform which enables the easy loading of the strand jacks via lifting equipment in workshops. This provides a safer and more effi cient alternative to the conventional method of manually lifting strand jacks during thrusters installation.

This new method minimises workers’ exposure to physical strain and injuries while reducing the amount of manpower and time required to complete the process. This has led to a two-fold increase in productivity as well as manpower and cost-savings of up to 50%.

1st Prize: Team Dolphin – “Dynamic Tripod”

3rd Prize: Dragon Force Team – “Telescopic Quayside Gangway”The Telescopic Quayside Gangway was developed by the Dock Department and Sembcorp Marine Technology in their search for a safe, fl exible and cost-effi cient solution to control extreme variations in steepness on the horizontal gangway.

Instead of relying on shore cranes to reposition the gangway, this innovative gangway is designed with an extendable end section to allow users the fl exibility to adjust its inclination according to tidal changes. It is also designed with features such as inline steps for improved safety, front and rear stoppers to minimise gangway travelling, and long-end rollers for enhanced stability.

This innovation effectively keeps the inclination angle of the horizontal gangway within safe limits throughout the entire tidal cycle, thereby reducing the risk of slips, trips and falls. Operational effi ciency is also further enhanced with the freeing up of the cranes for other purposes.

A total of eight teams presented their innovative projects and competed for top honours in this fi nal round of competition (see below for details of winning projects).

The OctoMaster innovation conceived by the LIFE Team from HVAC and Hydraulic Department is a systematic, one-stop solution for the safe and effi cient overhaul of butterfl y valves.

The device signifi cantly decreases the use of manual force and the amount of lifting during the overhaul. By using two remotely-operated jacking systems to assemble the butterfl y valve, this innovation eliminates manual hammering and strenuous use of muscular strength during the process.

Besides reducing the risk of physical strain and injuries, the OctoMaster has led to a three-fold increase in productivity, manpower savings of 60% and cost-savings of about 85%.
