One of the Eucharistic Prayers states: “Help your faithful to look into the signs of the times by the light of

faith.” Our relationship with Jesus, the Incarnate One, necessitates that we faithfully examine our current

situation. The “peeling away” that we are experiencing because of the Coronavirus has opened up a

greater space for us to reflect and interpret. It is a humbling honor to serve as your pastor during these

trying times, but I want to share with you some blessings that I have witnessed in the midst of this storm.

MORE FAMILY TIME. Before COVID-19, I would receive on average 2-4 calls a week from married couples going through

difficult situations. Since the shutdown, I haven’t received any! As we lockdown in our own homes, we are forced to

have difficult conversations, and look past the annoyances to see the blessing of these people God has placed in our

lives. I’ve heard stories of how individuals are using this time to grow in faith, families are spending time praying

together, couples are reflecting on Sunday readings, and kids are painting windows to mimic stained glass.

TECHNOLOGY ISN’T ENOUGH. We are more connected than ever, have all the technology and Netflix shows we could ever

want and yet we have become keenly aware that it’s not enough. We long for the day we can celebrate Mass together,

join hands, go to our friend’s house for dinner and hug our grandkids. In a sense we have rediscovered (to paraphrase

Mother Theresa) that we belong to each other.

PARISHES UP TO SPEED. Necessity is the mother of invention. In the last weeks, there has been a virtual tsunami as

Catholic parishes and pastors embrace new technology to spread the Gospel. Our parish has been no exception as

Fr. Michael and I have learned A LOT about how to make and upload videos, set up text notifications, construct

email blasts to parishioners whose emails we have on file, etc. It’s been amazing to hear how these methods have been

able to reach new (and not yet fully engaged) parishioners.

ALONE TOGETHER. This phrase speaks to how we can connect while still being distant. For example: adult children make

time to set up a family Zoom meeting, grandparents Facetime reading with their grandkids, families have time to

eat dinner together every night and even watching and commenting on the same show (remotely) on Netflix party.

WHO ARE WE? The Coronavirus has shaken the world to the core. What unites us? What should be my individual

response in this extraordinary moment? How can we be Catholic without the Sacraments? How can I be a priest

without preaching and celebrating the Sacraments? How can medical professionals do their jobs without the supplies

needed? The huge unemployment layoffs challenge our American DNA to define who we are apart from what we do.

How will this virus impact the way we study, work, and connect in the future? We don’t know, but let’s hope we don’t

let this cataclysmic moment pass without daring to read the signs with the light of faith. Let’s hope on this Holy Week,

we don’t let this cup pass us by.

PALM SUNDAY. A glimmer of joy in the midst of the somberness of lent. Today’s readings give quite a contrast of

experiences and emotions. From Jesus being welcomed into Jerusalem with great joy and exultation to the Gospel

which culminates with Jesus hanging on the Cross crying out “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” And with

that, “Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last.”

How things can change in one short week. What happened to all the people who were shouting and praising Him as

He entered into Jerusalem? How could they allow Him to enter into this Crucifixion and death? Jesus could have

exercised His divine power and refused to embrace His Cross. But He didn’t. Instead, He willingly walked through this

week anticipating and embracing the suffering and rejection He received.

God’s loving plan is more powerful than death itself and God has the final victory even when all seems lost. But we

have to live out Good Friday to Easter Sunday. Let this week give us divine hope. At this time of so much fear and

worry, we can be tempted toward discouragement and even despair. Many are out of work, or sick, or struggling to be

confined at home. They are worried about paying bills, buying food and staying healthy. But no hardship, no cross can

be too much for us if we keep our eyes on Christ.

HOW CAN I TRY AND EXPERIENCE THE PASSION STORY LIKE I AM HEARING IT FOR THE FIRST TIME?

WHERE DO I SEE CONNECTIONS OF SUFFERING IN MY LIFE OR IN THE WORLD TO JESUS’ PASSION AND DEATH?

WHERE DO I MEET GOD’S MERCY IN MY LIFE?

DOMINGO DE RAMOS. Un poquito de alegría en medio de lo sombrío de cuaresma. Las lecturas de hoy hay un gran contraste

de experiencias y emociones. De Jesús siendo recibido en Jerusalén con gran gozo y júbilo al Evangelio que culmina con

Jesús colgado en la Cruz gritando: "Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿por qué me has abandonado?" Y con eso, "Jesús dio un fuerte

grito y respiró el último."

Cómo pueden cambiar las cosas en una semana corta. ¿Qué les sucedió a todas las personas que le gritaban “Hosana!” y

alabándolo al entrar en Jerusalén? ¿Cómo podrían permitirle entrar en esta crucifixión y muerte? Jesús podría haber

ejercido su poder divino y negarse a abrazar su Cruz. Pero no lo hizo. En lugar de eso, libremente caminó a lo largo de esta

semana anticipando y abrazando el sufrimiento y el rechazo que recibió.

Pero el plan amoroso de Dios es más poderoso que la muerte misma y Dios tiene la victoria final incluso cuando todo

parece perdido. Pero tenemos que vivir el Viernes Santo para llegar al Domingo de Pascua. Que esta semana nos dé

esperanza divina. En este momento de tanto miedo y preocupación, podemos sentirnos tentados hacia el desaliento e

incluso la desesperación. Muchos están sin trabajo, o enfermos, o luchando dentro de estar encerrados en su casa, en

cuarentena. Están preocupados por pagar biles y renta, comprar alimentos y mantenerse saludables. Pero ninguna

dificultad, ninguna cruz puede ser demasiado para nosotros si mantenemos nuestros ojos fijos en Cristo.

¿CÓMO PUEDO TARTAR DE EXPERIMENTAR LA PASIÓN COMO SI LA ESTUVIERA ESCUCHANDO POR PRIMERA VEZ?

¿DÓNDE VEO UNA CONEXIÓN ENTRE LOS SUFRIMIENTOS EN MI VIDA O EN EL MUNDO Y LA PASIÓN Y MUERTE DE JESÚS?

¿DÓNDE ENCUENTRO LA MISERICORDIA DE DIOS EN MI VIDA?

NOTA DE P. ALAN & REFLEXIÓN DE LA SEMANA

Una de las plegarias eucarísticas dice: "Ayuda a tus fieles a mirar en los signos de los tiempos a la luz de la

fe." Nuestra relación con Jesús, el Encarnado, requiere que examinemos fielmente nuestra situación actual.

El "despegue" que estamos experimentando a causa del Coronavirus nos ha abierto un mayor espacio para

reflexionar e interpretar. Es un honor humilde servir como su pastor durante estos tiempos difíciles, pero

quiero compartir con ustedes algunas bendiciones que he presenciado en medio de esta tormenta.

MÁS TIEMPO EN FAMILIA. Antes de COVID-19, yo podía recibir entre 2 y 4 llamadas a la semana de parejas

casadas que pasaban por situaciones difíciles. ¡Desde el cierre hace dos semanas, no he recibido ninguna! Al encerrarnos en

nuestros propios hogares, nos vemos obligados a tener conversaciones difíciles y a mirar más allá de las molestias para ver la

bendición de estas personas que Dios ha puesto en nuestra vida. He escuchado numerosas historias de cómo las personas

están usando este tiempo para crecer en su fe personal; las familias están rezando juntos; las parejas están reflexionando

sobre las lecturas dominicales, y los niños están pintando sus ventanas para imitar las vidrieras.

LA TECNOLOGÍA NO ES SUFICIENTE. Estamos más conectados que nunca, y tenemos toda la tecnología y los programas de

Netflix que podríamos desear y, sin embargo, nos hemos vuelto muy conscientes de que todo eso no es suficiente.

Anhelamos el día en que podamos celebrar la misa juntos, unirnos, ir a la casa de nuestro amigo a cenar y abrazar a nuestros

nietos. En cierto sentido hemos redescubierto (parafraseando a la Madre Theresa) que nos pertenecemos el uno al otro.

PONIENDO LAS PARROQUIAS AL DÍA. La necesidad es la madre de la invención. En las últimas semanas, ha habido un tsunami

virtual, ya que las parroquias y los pastores católicos finalmente están adoptando nuevas tecnologías para difundir el

Evangelio. ¡Nuestra parroquia no es una excepción! El P. Michael y yo hemos aprendido mucho sobre cómo hacer y subir

videos, configurar notificaciones de texto, construir explosiones de correo electrónico a los feligreses cuyos correos

electrónicos tenemos en el archivo, etc. Ha sido increíble escuchar cómo estos métodos han sido capaces de llegar a nuevos

feligreses (y aún no están completamente comprometidos).

SEPARADOS PERO JUNTOS. Vi este hashtag en un comercial de televisión, como una forma de conectarnos mientras aún

estamos distantes. Por ejemplo: los hijos adultos hacen tiempo para configurar una reunión familiar Zoom; los abuelos usan

Facetime para leer con sus nietos y las familias tienen tiempo para cenar juntos cada noche.

¿QUIÉNES SOMOS? El Coronavirus ha sacudido el mundo hasta el fondo. ¿Qué es lo que nos une? ¿Cuál debería ser mi

respuesta individual en este momento extraordinario? ¿Cómo podemos ser católicos sin los Sacramentos? ¿Cómo puedo ser

sacerdote sin predicar y celebrar los Sacramentos? ¿Cómo pueden los profesionales médicos hacer su trabajo sin los

suministros necesarios? Los enormes desempleados desafían nuestro ADN americano para definir quiénes somos aparte de

lo que hacemos.

¿Cómo afectará este virus la forma en que estudiamos, trabajamos y conectamos en el futuro? No lo sabemos, pero

esperemos que no dejemos pasar este momento cataclísmico sin atrevernos a leer las señales con la luz de la fe. Esperemos

que, en esta Semana Santa, no dejemos pasar esta copa.

solidarity and our need for God, there

will be adoration of the Blessed

Sacrament every day at St. Mary

Church, from 8 am to 8 pm. We need

volunteers for every hour. Call the

office to sign up at 641-752-6278.

When you come, please make sure

there are no more than 10 adorers in

the church and please stand at least

two meters (6 feet) away from the

Many of us are home for a few days

(weeks) and this is a great time for St.

Francis of Assisi to touch base

with you. We have some volunteers and office staff making phone

calls to parishioners about your health, prayer requests, and current

phone numbers, email addresses and home addresses. One issue

that we are having, is some land lines have been disconnected, and

we have no way to touch base with you. Please call in at 752-6278

and give us your current cell phone number. Or, you can call us

and we can check your information.

fish dinners even in the midst of the pandemic!

The Emergency Food Box is OPEN

but will be adjusting their schedule,

effective Monday, March 23, the EFB

hours will be 1:00 pm-4:30 pm

(Mon., Tues., Wed., and Thurs.). The

Food Box will be closed on Fridays.

Please bring a valid ID with you. Any family in need in Marshall

county may visit the Food Box once a month. Reminder that the

Emergency Food Box is located at 109 S. 3rd St. (Marshalltown).

EMERGENCY FOOD BOX DONATIONS

Any donation may be dropped off during operating hours.

Specific food needs are: peanut butter, macaroni & cheese,

spaghetti, canned fruits & vegetables and cereal. Monetary

FAREWELL, MARY MAUK

Mary Mauk is retiring as Faith Formation

assistant as of March 2020. It is

bittersweet to see her go, but this has

been planned since before the outbreak

of the corona virus.

She started working at St. Henry Church

in 2014, as assistant to then-DRE Patty

Cook. Over her six years here Mary has

been essential at filling in wherever she

is needed: filing and data entry, bulletin

creation during transition to joint

bulletin, CEW and St. Henry gift shop

liaison, and many more day-to-day faith

formation program needs.

Mary says she will most miss the people

she worked with here, especially times

when we would gather together and

pray.

Mary is moving on to become the full

time (volunteer) executive director for

the soon-to-open Guiding Star center of

Marshalltown.

Thank you Mary, for all your invaluable

work, and our prayers are with you as

you move on!

THIS YEAR

With school not resuming any time

soon, Sunday Faith Formation is likely

over for this school year. So we want to

thank all those Catechists, assistants,

and substitutes who made our Sunday

morning program possible this year!

These Catechists put a great deal of

time and effort into sharing faith with

the children of our parish. We thank

them for their willingness to give their

time and talents this year.

SEEKING BAPTISM

FOR YOUR CHILD

In-person Baptism

classes are post-

poned for now.

Already scheduled Baptisms will still

happen, possibly on an altered schedule

to prevent large gatherings. Baptisms

will be limited to less than 10 people

(including the priest/deacon and the

children being baptized).

Lord, when I am tempted to despair,

give me hope. Help me to see your

presence in all things, even in those

things that are most troubling to me.

May this Holy Week transform my

darkest moments and weakness

as I surrender all to You, my God.
