The Samaná Peninsula is a gem of a piece of terri-tory in the northeastern corner of the DominicanRepublic. Miguel Bezi, Assistant Tourism Ministerfor Samaná, says, “The hills of the province are cov-

ered with tall, graceful coconut palms — 40 million of them. Here, one experiences the unspoiled beauty of mountain wa-terfalls, lush rainforests and endless picture-perfect beaches. The place looks like it fell out of a vacationer’s dream. It is thekind of vacation destination one just does not often find.”

Considering that almost every area of the Caribbean has ex-tensive tourism, it is amazing that the Dominican Republichas been able to pull out of a hat an unspoiled stretch ofmountainous tropical rainforest, seemingly endless miles ofcoconut palms and long-long beaches. The jutting peninsulacreates within it the Bay of Samaná. The region’s combina-tion of natural features creates one of the most beautiful land-scapes in the Dominican Republic.

One of them is El Salto del Limón, a 131 foot waterfall withimpressive beauty. Access is by mule or horse back as well ason foot. The trails leading to the falls are maintained by ACE-SAL (Association for Community Ecotourism of Salto delLimón.). Its members run so-called paradas, where they offerthe guided horse and mule tours to the waterfall and otherplaces of natural beauty, such as Playa Limón, or horsebacktours to El Valle via Palmarito.

The landscape surrounding the falls is picturesque. Smallhouses are painted in vivid colors and made from locallyavailable materials such as palm wood and thatch. The areais predominantly agricultural, with home gardens and veg-etable plots bordering plantations of banana, cacao, coffeeand coconut.

Most tours include comida criolla (local cuisine) and softdrinks. They also stop at shops for opportunities to buy locallyproduced arts and crafts as well as locally grown organiccocoa, and locally grown & roasted organic coffee. For clientswith a love of nature and outstanding natural beauty, with alively curiosity and sense of adventure, this is a not-to-be-missed destination.

During four months every year, the eyes of vacationers turnto the waters of the Samaná Bay and the Banco de la Plata, places visited by hundreds of humpback whales from Januaryto April. These immense creatures delight tourists with amagical show of movement and “singing” communicationsounds.

These mammals travel from faraway places to perform theirdances and love songs in the warm waters of the tropicalAtlantic and the protected bay — protected from the rough

seas and protected by environmental laws. They come fromthe northern Labrador, New Foundland, Greenland, Icelandand the Golf of Maine to breed and prepare their calves to re-turn to the frozen northern waters, in journeys that can takethem as much as 40,000 miles.

Other interesting attractions are tours to the small island ofCayo Levantado, visiting Los Haitises National Park orSCUBA diving into ocean depths.

Diverse Culture, Diverse CuisineThe Ciguayos, the original inhabitants, were driven out of

the region with the arrival the Spanish. The main period ofsettlement occurred during the 1820's when hundreds offreed slaves from Philadelphia went there at the invitation ofthe president of the country. (In 1855, the United States was

offered an opportunity to buy the penin-sula but the Senate turned it down.)

During the latter half of the 19th cen-tury more immigrants from Europe anda variety of English-speakingCaribbean islands were attracted to thearea by an economic boom. They be-came known as Los Ingleses. Theybrought with them their language, cus-toms and beliefs and many of the olderresidents speak English to this day.

In the last 30 years, tourism hasbrought a wave of European immi-grants, especially French, French-speaking Canadians, Italians andSpanish, who have contributed newfacets to the culture. Consequently, theregion of Samaná is characterized by arich mix of cultural diversity

The region is characterized, especiallythe towns of Las Terrenas and LasGaleras, by small, attractive bars andrestaurants. These also dot the beachesand offer fresh seafood that is frequentlyprepared by European chefs who serve

a cosmopolitan clientele. The region’s gastronomic offerings are

a sample of the world’s cuisine. Theseare often served up in small, attractive, restaurants set up in oceanside cabinsmade of Royal Palm logs and were occu-pied by fishermen families two decadesago.

Since coconut trees are the predomi-nant vegetation, and are present on thehillsides of the mountain range thatstretches along the peninsula’s interior, coconuts have a strong and universalpresence on local gastronomy. Regionaldishes are distinguished by coconut fla-vor, such as in the "pescado con coco," adelicacy native to this area consisting offish stewed in a subtle coconut andtomato sauce.

Another feature of Samaná is theabundance of small hotels and inns es-tablished by Europeans. There is alsoan array of all-inclusives from family toluxury. In addition, tourism develop-ment is breaking the traditional isola-

tion of this beautiful region by modern-izing the transportation network to therest of the country and the world. Thisincludes the new El Catey InternationalAirport that can accommodate large, in-tercontinental flights.

A new highway is being constructedthat will reduce travel time considerablyto and from Santo Domingo from sixhours to one and a half. This also servesto shorten distances with the country’smain international airport.

Hotels are being rebuilt in the area tocater to American standards, which in-cludes Ocean Paradise in Las Galeras, owned by Ocean Hotels.

Also renovating their property in thearea is Amhsa Marina Resort’s 200room and 50 bungalow all-inclusiveCasa Marina Bay. The property over-looks a quiet lagoon protected by a reef.So the waters are generally quiet andfine for snorkeling.Ocean Hotels,[email protected],www.oceanhotels.net; AmhsaMarina Hotels and Resorts,[email protected],www.amhsamarina.com/AmhsaIngles/Home.aspx

Cofresi is on the North Coastof the Dominican Republic. Two of its major properties,Ocean World Adventure

Park And Casino, and LifestyleHacienda Resorts & Spa have teamedup to offer an irresistible vacation andconvention destination.

Ocean World is the largest marine ad-venture park in the Caribbean. This is aplace where marine animals and theirhuman counterparts can meet on com-mon ground to gain a new understand-ing of one another. It offers a unique, life expanding experience for people ofall ages.

It is not merely a park carved out of in-shore land. The park is set into a naturalpromontory with a rain-forest and hillsrising behind it while jutting out intothe breeze-swept Atlantic. Its main fea-ture is the dolphin encounters andswims. Unlike many sea-adventureparks, this also has sea lion encountersand swim experience. Those same ani-mals perform several times a day withthe ocean as a backdrop. This gives asense of total immersion in the event.

Not so FearlessFor the fearless visitor there is the

shark encounter and swim. Actually, notso fearless works fine. These are thegentle sharks of the sea — nurse sharks. All the same, it is the exhilaration of theexperience that makes it unforgettable. After seeing how gentle and gracefulthey are as they glide through the water, guests will want be one of the few whohave touched, petted and fed the sharksthat inhabit Ocean World’s 200,000 gal-lon shark pool. These mysterious seacreatures, many of which are over sixfeet long, swim right up to guests whostand stand on a platform in the water.

There are also encounters with

stingrays. What other marine park of-fers the opportunity to hand feedstingrays or hold a seven foot nurseshark in ones lap? In their Stingray Bay,guests can float with, feed and pet thesegentle creatures and discover they don'treally sting at all!

Tropical birds and rare parrots flyfreely in their own structure that is filledwith plants and trees, just like theirhome in a rain forest environment. Not-to-be missed is the experience of swim-ming in the same pool with enormoustigers. Not too sure about this? This willmake it easier on the nerves — a glasswall separates you from them.

They have a tiger feeding program inwhich guests can feed tigers through ahole in a glass wall. The Tiger Grotto islush and green, filled with waterfallsand abundant vegetation, creating atrue jungle experience.

Perfect for the kids and fun for adultsis a large aquarium filled with coralsand fish from the Caribbean waters. Thedifference between this aquarium and

others is customers can dive in, andsnorkel in, this special environment —usually only a privilege allowed vetsand caretakers.

But Ocean World goes beyond thethrill of interacting with some of theworld’s most fascinating animals. Partof their $70 million investment programinvolved creating a sparkling, LasVegas-style Casino and bravissimoshow. They have a cocktail lounge thatcan accommodate up to 200 people andstate-of-the-art conference room, withstage, that can accommodate up to 350people for dining. Both are designed forconventions and incentive trips inmind.

To round off the list of this high-endeclectic tourism mix, Ocean World has awhite-sand private beach, a top stan-dard international marina for mega-yachts, a pool deck bar and interna-tional marina restaurant.

It is the sort of place to spend a day, ormore, and take home memories to last alifetime.
