VOLUME LXIII No. 5 SEPTEMBER, 2011
DONALD J. KNIPPING, Sr. RECEIVED THE PILGRIM DEGREE OF MERIT
Brother Don Knipping is a long standing member of Yuba
City Moose Lodge. He was sponsored by Larry Rider and
enrolled in June of 1984. He joined the Legion in December
1984 and received his Fellowship Degree on June 25, 2001 and is
an Honorary Past Governor of Yuba City Moose Lodge. He
reached the 25 Club in membership in May 1999 and has not
stopped signing up new members with 89 new members to his
credit. Brother Knipping has held all the appointed Lodge
chairs and was a Trustee for three years. Don has been active in
the Lodge since he joined and you will always find him
working on a committee or cooking in the kitchen. He was the
Adopt-a-Highway Lodge Chairman for many years. If we could
pin a Volunteer Badge on members of the Lodge Don would be
the first to wear one.
Brother Don received the Pilgrim Degree of Merit, the highest individual honor of the
Loyal Order of Moose at Mooseheart on June 4, 2011.
This prestigious honor, bestowed on so few, can only be awarded in the House of God
located on the campus of Mooseheart, the Child City, located in Illinois.
A Pilgrim ceremony honoring him will be held on October 8, 2011 at the Yuba City
Moose Lodge. All member of the Loyal Order, The Women of the Moose and friends are
cordially invited. Cocktails at 5 p.m. The ceremony will be at 6 and dinner at 7 p.m.
Dancing to the Brown Brothers Band will follow.
Men and women of Higher Degree are requested to wear their regalia.
The Lodge Office requests an RSVP by September 28, 2011. Please call the
Lodge Administrator’s Office at (530) 671-1204 to confirm your reservation.
Reservations are required for this function.
Jottings from Janie…..
Real friends are those who
When you’ve made
A fool of yourself
Don’t feel you’ve done
A permanent job of it.
Enough said.
Did you know that if you
sponsor 2 members this year your dues will be paid for a
year? Yup, that should Create Some Interest.
Large Thanks for the success of the Luau go out to Arlis
Hedge and the food preparation crew, Skip Goldberg and
the pit crew and the awesome decorating crew! Putting on
the Luau is a huge undertaking. Thank you for all your
support!
The annual California-Nevada Moose Convention is the
second weekend in September. Yuba City will be the
hostess chapter. That means, among other things, that we
provide 80 door prizes! HELP, PLEASE! We promise to
make our Yuba City Chapter and Lodge proud!
At our WOTM September 13 meeting, we will honor
Bev Knipping for receiving the Star Recorder Degree. You
are invited to attend this auspicious occasion.
September 24 will be our Fall Festival dinner dance.
We will enjoy barbecued chicken and dance to the music of
Country Tradition. A great time will be had by all!
Save your Good Stuff for our yard sale in October. DO
NOT bring anything to the lodge yet!
Our Hunk of the Month is Skip Goldberg. He has
helped with the WOTM breakfast, led the pit crew for the
Luau, will help with the Barn Dance in October and the
Winter Ball in January. Skip has said many times that
whatever the women need he will be there for us. Thank
you, Skip. 2 Wednesday dinners are yours and whenever
you need help we will be there for you.
Our volunteer of the month is Shirley Rivera Hicks.
Shirley is our recorder. This means she must register 500
women for the annual convention. She must receipt all the
generous donations for the bakeless bake sale. She must
keep track of the membership, both new and in arrears. She
is responsible to see that all the bills are paid on time. She
must check the emails, print the pertinent ones and
distribute them to the proper recipients. She must receive
the correspondence, call Mooseheart when it is deemed
necessary, make bank deposits, receive dues, list the ex-
penditures, receipt the chairmen’s monthly income from
breakfast, raffles, pit sales, endowments, and dinners. She
must answer the phone and take messages. She must run
monthly birthday list and provide a current monthly list for
the daily and weekly drawings. And she does all of this
with an upbeat, positive attitude!! We
truly appreciate Shirley Rivera Hicks.
We are so lucky to have her in our
chapter! A presentation will be made at
the September meeting.
Hello Moose Members,
We have had another great
month. We had a good turnout
for the Past Governors/Senior
Regents D/D. Thanks to our past
governor Jim Hedge for doing a
great job on that function. The
Moose Riders had another great
D/D and the WOTM put on a great Luau.
Our Youth Club is starting to get active again. If you
have children, grand children or great-grandchildren
bring them down. The youth club will be cooking
hamburger and hotdogs on September 10. The youth
club has also started bussing tables on the 2nd and 3rd
Sunday mornings.
WOW, taco Tuesday is continuing to do great! We
are breaking records every week. We are now having to
move the serving line from the Social Quarters into the
main dining hall. You will be able to order your tacos
from the window. You have the option to eat your meal
in the dining hall or in the Social Quarters.
We need to start getting members to sign up and be
part of our lodge. In my installation speech I said my
goal is to get 300 new members into our lodge this year.
We are off to a slow start. Ask your friends, neighbors
and family to come to our functions. Show them what
we can offer. You will see a poster in the lobby of a
goal thermometer of 300 members. Look at the poster
see if you can help us get to the top of the thermometer.
We now have a meter installed for city water and we
are also trying to get the NFL ticket on Dish for our
customers to enjoy. Please come on down and support
our functions. If you have any questions or concerns
you may always email me at [email protected].
We are currently looking for a new Administrator. If
you are interested please call me at 755-4727.
My pick for Super Moose for this month is Joe
Frances. Joe is currently the president of the Moose
Riders. He works on the 4th Wednesday dinner crew
and he is a volunteer bartender on Fridays. Thanks Joe
for getting involved in our lodge. You will get two
Wednesday night dinner tickets and you can park in the
Super Moose parking space.
The Shining Star Moosette for this month is Arlis
Hedge. Arlis does all of the ordering and shopping for
the lodge, she works several functions for the lodge and
she is always willing to help out if you
need her. Arlis will get two Wednesday
night dinner tickets.
Governor,
Joe Croghan

WILLIE THE MOOSE…
By Dan “Boots” Johnson
The creation of “Willie the Moose” began many years ago as an idea in my mind. Finally, in the spring of 1978 I began sketching the little guy on paper, bar napkins, restaurant napkins and finally really
getting into creating him. My first sketch was rather crude and after improving on it I decided to place “Willie” in the Moose Call. At the time I was the Editor of the Moose Call and decided to add him to the bulletin and Willie’s Corner was born. The column became the gossip page about lodge events, member’s birthdays, anniversaries and so on. I made sure everyone’s name was printed in bold and was easy to see. In time I improved the drawings and came up with what is still a part of our bulletin. At the time I decided to copyright him for exclusive use by the Yuba City Moose Lodge. Eventually Willy became known as the lodge mascot. Along the way I was approached by several Moose Lodges asking if it was OK to use Willy in their bulletins and Lodge functions. Then along came the California-Nevada Moose Association with the same request. I advised all who requested to “borrow” Willie that he was not for loan to anyone and was the exclusive mascot of Yuba City 1204. It wasn’t long before other cartoon moose showed up in other lodges and the Supreme Lodge at Mooseheart created their own and a member can purchase a moose doll of their creation. In the winter of 1984 I was presented a wooden replica of my Willie. It was made by Brother Floyd Laymen and he gave it to me at a Lodge function. I was thrilled and excited to receive a wooden Willie and immediately gave the wooden sculpture to the lodge. It was placed on the wall to the left of the serving window of the kitchen and has remained there since that time. Floyd was very upset because I gave his gift to me to the Lodge. On February 1, 1985 Floyd came to the Lodge and presented me with another wooden sculpture of Willie, exactly like the first one. I was taken aback by the second gift and Floyd said, “I love the little guy and my intent was for you to have it in your home.” That second wooden Willie was placed in my office at home and has been on the wall ever since. It wasn’t long before the caption “Willie Says” was followed by a slogan or some sort of Moose information. You can still find Willie’s Corner to this day in our Moose Call Bulletin. Editor’s Note: Dan Johnson, Sr. was the Moose Call editor for 23 years and resigned in 1993 to work with the California-Nevada Moose Association. He was later appointed to the then new Moose International Publication Committee. He was also a Moose International Publication Judge for five years.

CAMPING CLUB The District Campout was really fun with folks from Lodges all across the
Sacramento area participating. Great food was served and the big tent
was a great success as well. Beer for a buck and mixed drinks for 2 bucks
might of helped!!
The camping club headed off to 49er RV in the heart of Gold Country in
Plymouth and really enjoyed the area and the facilities. We even went a
mile underground into a gold mine and saw real gold! In September we
head off to Riverwalk RV in Fortuna for the third weekend and then for
our final outing of the year we will be at Indian Valley on Highway 49.
Bring your tent or RV and join us for a fun weekend.
