Have pictures of various objects (bed, pillow, lamp, flashlight, blanket, teddy bear, moon, star, sun, bicycle, ball, swing, butterfly etc.). Have students choose the objects that relate to nighttime. Discuss the nighttime objects and their purpose. 2. Draw a picture of where you sleep. 3. Draw a picture of one thing you like about nighttime. Tell about your picture. 4. Draw a picture of one thing you don’t like about nighttime. Tell about your picture. 5. Cut star and moon shapes from sponge or other material suitable for “stamping.” Using yellow tempera paint, let students stamp star and moon designs on black construction paper. 6. Using black construction paper, draw a “nighttime” picture using fluorescent colored crayons or pencils. 7. Show pictures of nocturnal animals: Owls, opossums, raccoons, foxes, bats, sea turtles, skunks, badgers, toads, moths, fireflies, etc. Talk about why these animals need the nighttime and their nighttime behaviors. 8. Have several familiar objects in a bag. Allow students to take turns being blindfolded, simulating darkness. Allow the student to pick an object from the bag and try to guess what it is. This can either be done by letting the student feel the object or having another student describe the objects. Activities Produced and Distributed by www.ncyi.org 1-800-477-8277
