Finance/MembershipA budget is available each year to assist clubs with membershipI suggest we use this to help clubs with LOW membership

Ideas to increase membership with particular help to Castle Bromwich (12) and Birmingham Exhibition Lions Club (7)Shirley had recently used a Yellow Card drop and copies were requested

100th Year Remember this is the century of Lions and the International Convention this year will be in Chicago

Ideas were discussed but the best received was from K&D President Richard Buckley of some permanent "item" at either the Airport or the International Railway station -- to be followed up.Solihull President Stephen Walker suggested the name of Helen Kellar should be used in some permanent project - Roundabout - Clock - Garden

All to be discussed again

Jackie offered to attend club meetings to more fully explain her role for the year.

First Vice DG Chris BurrowsGave a short update on his work load and was promised support from all 7 clubs

AOBChairman Doug asked Castel Bromwich President Graham to pass on best wishes from all of the clubs for the speedy recovery of Tony White- which he promised to do.

It was pointed out many clubs had provided Defribulators across the MBC and probably not enough PR had been gained from this.

Be careful when ordering units do this through Fast Aid or other medical supplier to avoid VAT

ACTIONS TAKEN SINCE LAST MEETING:Thanks to past Zone Chair, Lion John Cavana, I visited 4 clubs in the Zone to get to know them and I was very well received by all. I also co-hosted a Zone meeting with Lion John in June. This was to be Lion John’s last Zone meeting and a way for me to get to know the outgoing and the incoming Presidents, Secretaries and Treasurers. The business meeting was short and we then all had a pub supper afterwards which was well attended and most enjoyable. In June I also attended Kenilworth’s Grand Show which was an extremely successful event (see Kenilworth’s report below).

ACTIONS PLANNED BEFORE NEXT MEETING:I plan to visit as many clubs as possible and to discuss with them their plans as well as their suggestions for celebrating the forthcoming Lions Centennial.

NAME: Vacant OFFICE: LCIF Co-ordinatorDATE: August 2016

NAME: Carole Moseley OFFICE: Water ProjectsDATE: August 2016

DECISIONS REQUIRED:Provision of Boreholes in Sitikho Ward, Bungoma County, Kenya. £6,700

This is a new Project, that will be supervised, by Past Council Chairman, Pape Sembi and his Club, on behalf of the District (he recently managed the pipeline and greenhouse Project within cost and timescale)

Sitikho Ward has a population of over 300,000, divided into 72 villages averaging about 5000 people.

Although bordered by two rivers, the water is highly polluted, and many diseases such as typhoid are contracted.

Clean water is a major challenge and too expensive to purchase by about 98% of the population, who live well below the poverty line.

There is a need to sink boreholes and fit them with appropriate apparatus to tap water from the ground.

To agree contributions from Clubs at £100 per Club for this water project.

JUSTIFICATION FOR DECISIONS: Provision of clean water Prevention of water borne diseases Improve the farming activities due to the availability of water. To continue with the provision of a District Water Project it will be necessary to seeks

sufficient contributions from Club to finance a suitable Project

ACTION TAKEN SINCE THE LAST MEETINGKenyan Water Project - Cost £5,000

All loans have been repaid and sufficient contributions from Clubs have been made to finance this Project

The Project has been successfully completed, both the pipeline from Webuyu Reservoir and the supply of Greenhouses for widows and orphans to grow crops.

Crops are now growing with mainly success, although there has been an issue with one crop.

An article has been published in Midland News, with pictures of the greenhouses and the crops.

Nepal Water Pumps Although all 10 pumps have been completed, I am still awaiting information on the last 4

plaques and will continue to pursue this.

ACTION PLANNED BEFORE THE NEXT MEETING To complete the Nepal Project To support the above Water Project if approved

NAME: Ken Barker OFFICE: CompetitionsDATE: August 2016

DECISIONS REQUIRED:At the last Cabinet meeting it was agreed to reduce the number of competitions held in District 105M by discontinuing a number of them with effect from the beginning of the Lions year 2016-2017. An action on me was to track down and seek the agreement of Lion Roy White’s widow to the proposed change of use for the Roy White Trophy. This I have done and Barbara White was in full agreement. I therefore now ask for final confirmation that the Roy White Trophy in future be presented for the “Website and Social Media” competition.

JUSTIFICATION FOR DECISIONS: This was an “action” for me to take following the last Cabinet meeting.

ACTIONS TAKEN SINCE LAST MEETING:Have been liaising with District Web mistress to:-

a) Delete the discontinued competitions from our websiteb) Update the information regarding current competitions on our website.c) Provide updated CV as requested.

NAME: Melissa Murphy OFFICE: Centennial SupportDATE: August 2016

DECISIONS REQUIRED:None

JUSTIFICATION FOR DECISIONS:N/A

ACTIONS TAKEN SINCE LAST MEETING:I attended a multiple district centennial meeting at the district headquarters on the 10th of July. Officers gave feedback on the work carried out for all main projects linked to Centennial. The most important discussion concerned the need to encourage all club secretaries to report activities on My LCI so it can be used in publicity. Phillip Goodyear had filtered information from My LCI and there are many 105m clubs that are not reporting their many hours of great service. There were a lots of projects that I didn’t realised were part of the centennial celebrations so I came away thinking if I didn’t know there must be lots more lions and clubs that need an information update.

I also attended a centennial and communications team meeting at Simon Moss’ house on the 18th of July. I fed back information from the multiple district meeting. It was a very positive meeting where the discussion of reporting our activities and publicising our work was the main focus.

ACTIONS PLANNED BEFORE NEXT MEETING: Contact Liam Barrett about defibrillator information and guidance for multiple district. Put together and information pack ‘Everything you wanted to know about Centennial

Projects but were too afraid to ask’.24

Begin to plan a ‘Feeding the Hungry’ event. Be available to talk at club/ zone meetings about Centennial projects.

NAME: Jackie Williams OFFICE: Youth ExchangeDATE: August 2016

DECISIONS REQUIRED:None

JUSTIFICATION FOR DECISIONS:N/A

ACTIONS TAKEN SINCE LAST MEETING:The members of Worcester Lions Club have hosted 2 exchangees 1 from the Netherlands and 1 from Hungary. Both boys had a wonderful time and both Joy and Ian Haffner and Gordon and Catherine Templeton found the experience enjoyable as they were the bed and Breakfast hosts with clubs from the Zone taking the boys off on day trips. All whom hosted the boys found them to be the pleasant and polite. With Yeop from The Netherlands being in his second year of a degree in IT sorting out members computers with ease. He even sorted Lion Linda Cross’ when he had only been in the country a few hours after they picked him up from the airport. The member of Zone F who took part totally enjoyed themselves working as a team to help with the hosting, and encourage the zone to socialise together with a bar-b=q and getting a team centred around the boys to take part in the Zone skittles competition unfoundedly no one told them that the object of the evening was not to win.Youth exchange outward was supported by the clubs of Shirley and Marston Green with both sending an exchangee outwards

ACTIONS PLANNED BEFORE NEXT MEETING: To make all clubs aware of Youth Exchange both inwards and outwards To give all lions who want one a family host guideTo make Lions understand that Youth Exchange is not a holiday but a cultural exchange. To make Zones aware that hosting can be a zone project and so takes the pressure off the hosts who they are staying with.

SECTION 5: HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT

NAME: Sarah Hill OFFICE: Health Committee DATE: August 2016

DECISIONS REQUIRED:The addition of the Birmingham Crisis Centre (BCC) to the DG’s Shopping list; asking clubs to donate up to £100 towards building a 'Computer School' for a BCC, a women's refuge centre, for women and children who have become victims of domestic violence. This is being led by Coventry Leofric club.

The purpose is to encourage the women and the older children to make the first step towards further education. Member of Leofric club have already sourced some computers and have managed to gain access to some free courses from the Open University for the residents.

JUSTIFICATION FOR DECISIONS: The BCC offers women and children a fresh start away from abusive relationships. As part of that they often need skills to help them get a new start. Access to computers not only helps learning, but

27

also the ability to deal with the practical aspects of getting sorted out, that can often only be done online e.g. Housing, benefits, job applications.

ACTIONS TAKEN SINCE LAST MEETING: Not a lot, being rather pre-occupied with other things!

ACTIONS PLANNED BEFORE NEXT MEETING:Continue as are, helping committee members as needed.

ACTIONS TAKEN SINCE LAST MEETING:Not having had a meeting with anyone as yet, I have taken it upon myself to inform the District that Medicalert have an offer on small faced “Citizen” watches for the month of August. This is for new & existing members.

ACTIONS PLANNED BEFORE NEXT MEETING:Will keep the District informed of any new offers and hope to have a meeting with other District Officers & the MD Officer.

NAME: Jackie Culliford OFFICE: MiaBDATE: August 2016

DECISIONS REQUIRED:The Cabinet is asked to support my plan of action for the coming year and do whatever they can to help deliver it:-

- To continue to encourage Clubs to participate in the project which can bring reassurance and peace of mind to many vulnerable people, can potential save lives and speed up medical treatment and is a very effective way to promote Lions by taking our logo into thousands of homes.

- To explore how we can promote the scheme to the Blue Light services at all levels as unless the 28

medical profession are aware of and support the scheme it is a waste of time and resources. This should include exploring ways to promote the project at the highest levels and try to discuss with them if changes are needed to make it even more useful to the emergency services.

- To review the information available on the project and consider if any improvement could be made.

JUSTIFICATION FOR DECISIONS:Message in a Bottle is a very simple and yet effective Lions scheme which has the support of many Clubs. There is, however, more to it than handing out bottles and hoping that they do the job they are designed to do. We have a responsibility to ensure that if a vulnerable person is trusting that the information within the bottle will help them at a time of great need then it is crucial that it does.

ACTIONS TAKEN SINCE LAST MEETING:Anita Bedi (the previous MiaB co-ordinator) contacted and where possible visited Zone meetings to encourage Clubs to participate in the project and contacted Warwickshire Ambulance service to ensure that they were aware of the MiaB.

I have sent out a questionnaire to all Clubs asking for feedback on who is involved with MiaB and any success stories they can share and also any concerns they may have. To date I have received 8 replies which are in the main positive with an example of paramedics using the information and clubs distributing the bottles themselves or through third parties but with some concerns :-

- Whether the Ambulance and First Responders in all areas are sufficiently aware of the scheme.

- That the standard display boxes are too flimsy

- And questions about how to obtain the boxes.

I have accepted an invitation from Matthew Bungard to attend a District MiaB officers meeting in September and hope to learn from him and the other District Officers how they are contacting the emergency services and promoting the project in their districts.

ACTIONS PLANNED BEFORE NEXT MEETING: Continue to try to establish a fuller picture of take up of the project by Clubs in the District and report on this to a future Cabinet meeting.

Continue to encourage Clubs to get involved.

Explore ways to contact the correct people who have influence in the emergency service within our District and find out how this is done nationally and in other Districts so we can learn from others.

Begin a review of information available on the web sites and in hard copy to promote the project to the emergency services and the potential users of the scheme.

ACTIONS PLANNED BEFORE NEXT MEETING: I shall be producing a newsletter updating any projects that the previous officer has been working on and my plans for the year. I have been in contact with PDG Roger Hancock who was our speech and Hearing Officer for the last 10 years Lion Roger will be a hard act to follow.

I am in the process of arranging a meeting with the midlands Area Manager of Hearing Dogs for the Deaf to discuss our centennial Challenge and other projects that we may be able to help with.I intend to attempt to keep up the awareness of Deafness and the problems that it can cause and discuss what we can do to help as Lions in our Clubs.

I am reminded of a Fellow Lion who is blind saying to me that he believes that deafness is a worse condition than being blind and as I suffer with a hearing loss problem can understand what he meant.

I shall be over the year making a nuisance of myself by encouraging all of our clubs to take up the challenge of taking on a project that will ease the burden of both children and adults that suffer from deafness.

NAME: Douglas Cross OFFICE: GMT Liaison OfficerDATE: August 2016

DECISIONS REQUIRED:None

JUSTIFICATION FOR DECISIONS:N/A

ACTIONS TAKEN SINCE LAST MEETING:We are continuing to lose members - my list enclosed shows the clubs with less than 10 which require the greatest help Including DG Ron's own club.

Last Lions year we lost two Clubs Evesham Vale & Pershore Lions Club and Birmingham Edgbaston Lions Club we will lose more unless some urgent action is taken.

We enter a new year for the very first time Lions District 105M (OUR DISTRICT) has a membership below 1000.

With the DG's new idea of using club membership officers in local areas meeting should be arranged quickly.

Hopeful this will result in interest of rebuilding clubs struggling for membership practically those under 10, many still doing a good job - many are not even looking for new members and they will eventually fail.

Birmingham Quinton Club BranchThe new CB still only has 3 members but a membership drive is planned for SeptemberLion Paul Murphy will update this report at Cabinet

Alcester Club BranchDespite membership drives the total is still very low - but the club is very activeBy now we should have obtained a full 20 members to allow them to become a full club

I repeat --We should be forming new Lions Clubs - We still have both new locations and indeed locations were clubs have folded years which could be reformed – and were Lions service to the community is required.

Birmingham AstonFollowing a interest via some members of Coventry Mercia Lions Club, I have held a preliminary meeting at Norr TV in the Aston area which was quite successful. They are now attempting to recruit local people so that informal meetings can start to form a new Lions Club with the help of members from Mercia Lions Club.

Birmingham Exhibition Lions ClubHave now met for the first time at Hatchford Brook Golf Club and actually have a prospective member. But they are still listed with 8 members and meeting in SheldonBecause the new Zone C consists of all 7 Solihull based clubs help for rebuilding will be discussed at the first Zone C meeting.

Please look at Ann Pemberton’s up to date list for clubs membership numbers to check my list

ACTIONS TAKEN SINCE LAST MEETING:This is my second year as GLT Co-ordinator but final year of the 3 year GLT appointment period.

Successfully held 2 development workshops for incoming club officers; Presidents Secretaries and Treasurers. A total of 55 attended over the 2 sessions.

Held the development workshop for incoming zone and region chairs which was fully attended (all but one). A very successful workshop with excellent engagement from all. This was held at MDHQ on a Sunday morning and thanks to Brigitte for the excellent service on the day.

Held GLT team meeting the development officer Paul Murphy and the training team to discuss future plans including Autumn Forum.

Met with the District Governor to briefly discuss the Autumn Forum Programme – More later…

I would like to thank the Development Officer and all of the trainers who continue to plan and deliver training for this District in a very professional way.

As a GLT team we continually ask for feedback and suggestions for training needs. Please share any ideas with Paul and myself or any of the training team.

ACTIONS PLANNED BEFORE NEXT MEETING:To finalise the autumn programme and attract more Lions to attend.

ACTIONS TAKEN SINCE LAST MEETINGI developed and delivered Zone and Region Chair training on the 7th August – all but one RC/ZCs were in attendance and from the feedback received, they all enjoyed the session and were able to plan their years ahead.

I have asked RC/ZC to find venues for training in their regions, so that the MyLCI Training can be rolled out district wide. I’ll be following this up with a phone call soon!

I have also been asked to support a club treasurer with the use of Excel.

I will follow up a few enquiries that I received about Facebook advertising in the very near future.

I attended a GLT meeting on the10/8, where plans were discussed for Autumn Forum.

The lack of adherence to our deadlines from Cabinet officers indicates that the reports are not high on priority lists to meet the deadlines set and a shake- up is required

I would also like to thank the MD Officers who I have been in touch with and who have also been providing advice and guidance.

Points to Note

International Dues Exchange Rate

Brian gave me a list detailing the 11 clubs and amounts which total £216.22 regarding the exchange rate issue mentioned in his last report. Of these 4 clubs have repaid a total of £98.12. I expect the outstanding amounts to be paid by cubs when they pay their dues, but I will monitor this.

Evesham and Vale

I have received an email from June Lloyd Adams who informed me that a lot of work has been done on this and it now requires a letter to the bank authorising them to close the account and transfer the money to the District Admin account. I have sent a letter, but wait to see if this is sufficient or whether it needs more authority behind it.

Membership

£500 was paid to Worcester Lions Club for a gazebo they bought out of last years funds.

Changeover and Convention

Funds have been exchanged with John Barnes regarding changeover and a cheque for £3000.00 was handed over for the deposit on next years convention. John also received a cheque for £19.80 for regalia.

Dues

I wrote to all cubs in July reminding them that dues are due so far 24 clubs have and I have heard from a couple of others who are intending to pay soon, but had a few queries. I do need to get back t some clubs as the Dues Calculator that was initially sent out had an error in it, this has now been rectified, but it does mean that the 2 clubs who opted not to pay Insurances etc. from charity need to send that portion of the dues. I will contact these clubs directly.

ACTIONS TAKEN SINCE LAST MEETING: I have via the Webmaster prompted all the clubs in the District to have an Item on the Agenda for their first meeting of the new Lions year the signing of the SMS “Statement of Intent”. I have received 18 a return of 33% at the time of writing this report. I shall again via the Webmaster suggest all clubs that have not sent me a signed copy to make this an Item on the Agenda of their next meeting. Having received a 100% return for the last two years I would very much like it to continue for the foreseeable future.

As I have said in previous reports I have studied to the best of my ability Food Hygiene plus Allergens and Intolerances I find that this subject is becoming clearer. I have during the past few months been answering questions with regard to Food Hygiene, Allergens and Intolerances. I have spoken to the Food Standards Agency (FSA) about these issues and their advice is to take a common sense approach to the issue. The most important piece of advice being, to be able to specify any allergens or intolerances that are in the food being served or sold if asked. Keep all labels of prepared produce for inspection if someone should ask to see the ingredients. My advice to the clubs is to display an Allergen & Intolerances notice at all events where food is provided and always have a list of ingredients available. Cross contamination should be their main concern when preparing food. Never use the same utensils on different foods, particularly on cooked and uncooked meats.

ACTIONS PLANNED BEFORE NEXT MEETING:I shall again circulate the latest version of “Road to Safety”. I shall also request the Webmaster to make it available on the District website.I am of course always open to questions and shall do my best to answer them to the best of my ability. If I cannot find the answer I shall be honest enough to admit it and seek help from anyone who may be able to provide the answer.I shall also continue to request those clubs that have not returned a signed copy of the “Statement of Intent” to do so. Our District is leading the way with 100% returns which I believe we should be proud of.

ACTIONS TAKEN SINCE LAST MEETINGI made a successful handover to myself to start the new Lions Year full of enthusiasm as always.

Since the last Cabinet meeting, I have completed DBS checks in respect of members of Solihull Lions Club, Rugby Rokeby and Wellingborough Lions Clubs.

Arrangements are in hand to renew applications for members of Birmingham Chinatown Club on 25th July 2016. I am in the process of organising further checks at Southam in August and Shakespeare Club in September 2016.

I am continuing to chase Lions clubs who have so far failed to return their Certificate Confirmation details.

A MD VPO meeting which had been arranged for 25th June was cancelled, making only one MD meeting during the previous Lions year. No date has yet been fixed for a meeting in the current year.

ACTIONS PLANNED BEFORE NEXT MEETING:To continue to submit DBS applications in respect of Lions Clubs members. To advise on matters concerning the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults.
