A gift to Bath changes lives now and in the future

I am proud to say that one hundred per cent of every gift given to Bath goes directly to transform lives.

For bright students in need, our scholarships allow access to a Bath education. For budding business leaders across all disciplines, our enterprise programmes help foster the spirit of innovation. For future sports medallists, including over 200 international-level athletes based here, we nurture talent and

ensure equal access to facilities and training regardless of background.

Not only do we impact the lives of those who study at Bath; our research is committed to tackling global challenges. For example in medical research we are leading the way with novel technological solutions, drawing on our expertise across engineering and science. In some of the world’s poorest populations, we are working with local communities to identify and champion measures for long-term change.

So, my gratitude to you is not simply on behalf of the University of Bath. It is on behalf of the hundreds of thousands of lives you help us to transform through our work.

I hope this Report serves to show the breadth of impact which your support has. Thank you for being a part of it.

Professor Dame Glynis Breakwell DBE DLVice-Chancellor

Thank you for your support this past year

Alumni donations not only provide students with opportunities for personal development, but the ripples of your donations can be seen on campus, in the local community, and around the world.

The incredible variety of activities that have been supported is testament to the multi-skilled community of individuals that make up Bath’s student population. Your donations not only

benefit the student groups that are able to invest in new equipment and facilities, but also the individual people who have the vision and drive to improve their group for the benefit of its current and future members. I am proud to represent a body of students who are truly leaders in their generation.

On behalf of the entire student body, and Students’ Union at the University of Bath, I would like to thank all of our alumni for their generous donations and continued support.

Jordan Kenny, Students’ Union President 2014

30-31 Leadership Giving Circles

Working at a University like ours is a great privilege. We are

effectively a collection of two dozen single-issue charities, helping feed Africa, investing in entrepreneurs, maximising sporting talent, improving the effectiveness of our health care system…the list could go on. We were tempted to include pieces about Alzheimer’s research, our work with military veterans, global citizenship grants to encourage student mobility, and so much more. There is always more.

One of the conclusions we were able to draw from our first donor survey last year was that we are doing well in articulating to you how we spend, invest or allocate your gifts, but that nonetheless we could do better. So we will soon be launching a regular email newsletter, a bite-sized Donor Report, to give you some insight into the breadth of areas which benefit from your philanthropy, and, critically, the difference it makes to people and places here at the University and beyond.

I look forward to your feedback on them, and this issue as well, and in the meantime thank you again for your generosity.

Thank you.

Mr Gavin A. Maggs

Director of Development and Alumni Relations

Every year, the range of scholarships available at Bath grows. And every year, we see our scholars reaching for their full potential. It’s thanks to you, our donor community, that we can offer these opportunities for brighter futures to young

people who might otherwise find it difficult to dedicate their time to study. Support can relieve financial pressure, and a boost of encouragement can set someone down the path to success.

Abigail Downie (MLES, year 2)

As a result of my scholarship I have been able to explore parts of the world that would otherwise have remained a mystery. Studying at Tver State University in Russia was an

unforgettable experience. Tver is a university city and a regional centre, so I was surprised to be drawing my water from a pump across the road – despite living in the same building as my head of department! It has been illuminating to catch glimpses of France and Russia through the eyes of natives, rather than after filtering by British perspectives.

Alex Watts (Sport and Social Science, year 1)

I feel proud that throughout my entire first year, every piece of work has been graded as a ‘First.’ My scholarship also enabled me to enjoy an incredible unpaid

work experience placement with a sports management company. I am thrilled to say that the company were hugely impressed by my impact and ability, and subsequently offered me a job. I cannot thank you enough for your generosity and I assure you that I will endeavour to make the most of this wonderful opportunity.

Emily Lo (Civil Engineering, year 1)

My scholarship has allowed me greater freedom to try new activities which have broadened my outlook. I competed in my biggest ever badminton tournament, and

took part in an Engineers Without Borders competition to design a water measuring device in boreholes and wells which could be used in developing countries. It showed me how the work of engineers could benefit people, which gave me further appreciation of the field I am studying.

Henry Kenyon (Psychology, year 2)

With your help I have learnt to drive, taken up ballroom dancing and had time to delve deeper into human cognition through independent research. I am

happier, healthier, more successful, and have more friends than I would have had I not been given this scholarship, and I don’t think that leaves any part of my experience and life that hasn’t been improved. With that in mind, I can really only say “thank you”.

Joanne Philips (Social Work, finalist)

I have spent the last five months on placement in a busy child protection team, safeguarding, advocating and defending the rights of children. The

Alumni Fund scholarship has been of enormous support, it is highly unlikely that I would have remained at the University of Bath without it. On an emotional level, it gave such a boost to my confidence and my sense of self-worth. I shall always remain grateful to those who contribute.

When I was at Bath, I never felt there was something I couldn’t do because of money, and I wasn’t in debt when I left. But things are different today.

That’s why there’s a fund built up from regular contributions by Bath graduates – over 2,000 of us. Throughout the year, Students’ Union societies, academic departments and individual students can apply for help from this fund. We hold two Alumni Fund panel meetings a year, where we debate each application and provide the full or partial funding it deserves. Very importantly there are also up to 20 scholarships provided each year, which can be life-changing for the students who receive them.

I enjoy being on the panel (pictured right) because I get a good sense of what’s going on at Bath; if there’s something new and exciting happening, they’re probably looking for funding from somewhere! We enjoy kick-starting ideas which might be world-changers and bring significant research council grants to the University. For example, the glucose sensor research we’ve just awarded (see page 16) could revolutionise how diabetics are treated, all thanks to the momentum this fund has been able to provide.

There are people of all ages and disciplines on the panel. I’m one of four alumni donor members who make way for new people every few years, then we have academic and student representatives. When we have bids for research funding, a group of academics goes through them in advance to give us a steer on their eligibility.

There’s a great sense of responsibility on the panel. There are tough decisions to make and they’re getting tougher, but we assess every application thoroughly and fairly. We like applications that improve the student experience in the long term, and also ones where people have shown initiative in raising money from other sources.

It’s wonderful that so many graduates support the Alumni Fund today. I’m sure the vast majority of graduates would honestly say that their time at Bath contributed significantly to their careers and life experiences. Isn’t it nice to say that you’re contributing to other people having those same opportunities? The student experience is about more than just studying for exams. It‘s probably the last opportunity you get to learn wide-ranging skills that could influence the rest of your life. I’m proud to be part of a group of people making that possible.

The Alumni Fund – growing opportunities at Bath If you support the Alumni Fund, you’re part of a growing community that funds a huge range of inspiring projects. Steve Wood (BSc Mathematics 1972)is one of your representatives and helps distribute the money.

Anna McQuaid (BSc Business Administration 1981) took the plunge after graduating to start her

own management consultancy, Consularia. She saw huge success coaching business teams in investment banking, media and technology, and today wholeheartedly supports the Alumni Fund.

I am absolutely sure that my degree from Bath was the foundation of my business. I majored in Marketing and Organisational Behaviour, and I was sure I’d need to acquire new skills, but my BSc would be my foundation. My favourite professor at Bath, Iain Mangham, was very influential over me. He was interested in the dramaturgy of business, explaining how you put on your costume and act your part, as if it were scripted. Those who don’t act appropriately don’t do very well; they get booed off the stage. That perspective stayed with me, and I based my business around it. During my working life I would spend summers learning from people who were the best in the world. I would bring that experience back to my clients, tailor it to their business, and improve the results they achieved.

Having spent a few years in sales and marketing after graduating, I decided to start Consularia. Management consultancy in 1988 was really accountancy with a few other things thrown in – but I find numbers very dull, so I wanted to concentrate on people; on their competence, their confidence and their commitment to organisational goals. At the time there was nobody else doing this in Europe that I knew about. I’m no entrepreneur, but I realised that if I could take people who were performing at bronze level in business, and raise them to gold level, there would be money in it. I first approached a well-known advertising agency in London offering measurable insight into the psychology of their creative teams,

using psychometric profiling, which they could use to improve their results. The agency won awards, and the MD was so impressed he began recommending my services, and the business grew from there. My clients have always valued an open mind who can reveal new possibilities to them. They had to be prepared for an objective outsider to say they were wrong, and offer a better way to work. I was paid to disagree with them!

Of course, I had to have self-belief; setting up a business and being self-employed is risky. But all employment is risky. If you are successful independently, you’ll pay yourself more than anybody else ever will. I had to risk my parents’ money to get started, but knowing that my father – a man who had been a Lancaster bomber pilot – believed in my hard work, made me so much braver.

When I was asked to donate to Bath, I thought it would be impolite not to. It seemed sensible to be contacting alumni for support, and the University had given me so much. At a lunch on campus in 2007, I was most impressed with the scholars that the donations fund – they are brave to take on this amount of debt, and intelligent and grateful too. It’s important to think independently, and to be flexible. Wisdom doesn’t come from us all being the same. That’s why I also support Amnesty International, because freedom of speech and action is important to me. But my personal connection to Bath is what I am most grateful for, and I will continue my support for life.

Bath is a hive of activity when it comes to innovation. Across all faculties, ideas are generated

that could fundamentally change the ways we work, eat, drive, play, interact and think. But crucially, it doesn’t stop there; Bath prides itself on incubating ideas to bring them into our lives through commercialisation, industrial partnership and support for entrepreneurs. Your support, through funding and mentoring, is invaluable in helping undergraduates bring their business concepts to fruition.

Alumni support innovative engineering students

Getting an engineering venture off the ground takes determination, time and money, but Bath students now have the advantage of bursaries provided by alumni.

The Geoff Herrington Innovation Bursary gives a new graduate support for three months whilst they explore commercialisation and development opportunities for their final year engineering project. It was set up in memory of Geoff, himself a successful engineering entrepreneur, by his wife Professor Sara Arber, and is also supported by the company that Geoff established, Supply Point Systems.

Not only does this bursary provide a unique opportunity to turn brilliant ideas into business; it has encouraged a wave of similar bursaries from donors who recognise the importance of entrepreneurship. From 2014 the Embleton Innovation Bursary, the Mark Farmer Innovation Bursary and the Jon Craton Innovation Bursary all allow Engineering students to take ideas formulated in their final year project to the next stage, over six months. This means that student innovations could emerge from academia to influence our everyday lives, instead of fading into anonymity after graduation.

Chris Day (MEng Electrical & Electronic Engineering 2013) was awarded the first Geoff Herrington Innovation Bursary to develop his research into how go-karts are powered. He spent the summer working on hardware design for a new prototype kart, and said: “The Bursary gave me the confidence to take the project to the next level, redesigning the system to turn it into a product. It has completely changed the direction of my career; I am now working for the company who inspired me to begin the research, Biz Karts Ltd. My role is to develop the electric vehicles and we are looking at integrating my own product into the device.”

Our Honest Foods wins trip to New York

Having come through a rigorous application process and been selected by the University of Bath Business Plan Judging Panel, the graduates behind winning office snack company Our Honest Foods were flown out to New York for a money-can’t-buy experience, sponsored by Deloitte. They are also receiving guidance from Laurence James (BSc Statistics 1976) who is giving his time to mentor the group. “Our Honest Foods delivers wholesome British foods to offices across the UK. We began in September 2013, although I would say that the idea had been planted in our heads ever since we had office jobs. At work, we were often visited by the dreaded hunger grumbles and we couldn’t find anything to quell this affliction that didn’t make us feel guilty after the final bite. Since then we’ve been dreaming about how to solve this problem. That’s our aim you see, to get people in offices eating better. So, we met the team at Iris Worldwide to discuss brand ideas, pitched to senior figures at Wells Fargo and Nomura, attended an Alumni Reception on a panoramic 49th floorof downtown Manhattan, debated food trends at Karp Resources and gainedan insight into marketing scalability with the former CMO of Citigroup. All of these people are Bath alumni, and we thank you for your time and thoughts shared. You know where to find us if you’re ever in Britain. New York served us well, now back to satiating office hunger…”

Day 1 Our trip began with an insider tour of SanFrancisco. Golden Gate Bridge, Little Italy, the Castro district, Chinatown… but the tech influence soon started to become apparent. Advertisements for cloud computing and tech companies were everywhere. We were told, “This used to be a bad part of town, until Twitter came here”.

Spent the afternoon meeting entrepreneurs. Our questions started along the lines of “So, say I want a mansion in California…” but soon quietened into gossip: Google and Twitter aren’t cool anymore, but nice if you want to start on six-figure salaries. Start-ups are where it’s at.

Day 2

Google and Facebook Google was exactly what we expected. A slide in reception, brightly coloured bikes, not to mention perks galore for employees: at-desk dry cleaning, massages, free food, tennis court…

In Silicon Valley, regardless of your idea, someone will listen to it. Our presentation about Ambl was broadcast to all Google offices and met with great enthusiasm.

Next stop: Facebook. Outside, merely an office block. Inside, a world of creativity, cutting edge technology, free food and hammocks. We passed Mr Zuckerberg, pacing behind a “Do not photograph the animals” sign. We were all looking for the right point to leave behind our CVs.

Day 3

City start-ups Marks about strategies for making a startup work. Test test test, fail early and often, and make sure you can make a guerrilla marketing campaign.

Eventbrite was our second stop. Having moved in only two days ago, the offices were already up and running and busy, touchscreens displaying the schedule on each door; it was a hive of creativity. A useful discussion with Bath grads Natalie Downe and Simon Willison about strategy, learning on the fly, what you should tell the press… right from a couple who had just been through the entire process.

Day 4

J.P. Morgan and Bath alumniBusiness time with J.P. Morgan. Presenting to them was nerve-wracking, yet their advice still came down to a simple idea. Honour thy consumer. Know what your customers want, align with them, and market to them correctly; the product is secondary. Then we gave a presentation to Bath alumni that was met with excitement, advice and ideas.

Contributions from Bath graduates are kick-starting vital health

research that could affect us all. Our researchers have identified ways to improve or revolutionise everyday procedures like insulin injections, vaccinations and trips to the hospital. Donations towards this work make it possible to bring the results to patients in the UK and across the world.

Getting vaccines to people who need them

Vaccines need to be kept between 2˚C and 8˚C to be useable. But keeping them refrigerated over long distances can be a problem, so up to 85 per cent arrive at their destination unfit for use. This contributes to the deaths of over 6 million people each year from preventable diseases, including 2.5 million children – a heavy burden for families in developing countries.

Now, thanks to a gift from Bath alumnus Tim Ford (BSc Materials Science 1981), who is profiled on page 18, Dr Asel Sartbaeva is pioneering a potential solution to this long-standing challenge. Her idea is for a new ‘nano-coating’ made of silica – the main constituent of sand – that could be grown around individual vaccine molecules, enabling it to be taken anywhere in the world without the need for a complicated cold chain. It would also save a lot of money; the cost of refrigerated transportation accounts for up to 95 per cent of the total cost of vaccine programs (UNICEF figures, 2012).

Asel is also keen to inspire future generations of women, saying: “I hope my experiences can help future female scientists to succeed. My mantra would be to believe in yourself and never give up.”

Reducing weekend mortality

Did you know that seriously ill hospital patients admitted at the weekend are more likely to die over the next 30 days than those admitted during the week? Across the UK, mortality rates are up to 20 per cent higher for those admitted out of hours. It’s a phenomenon that a PhD researcher at the University, Marianna Frangeskou, is further investigating, taking into account a huge range of factors including reduced staffing levels and limited access to diagnostic equipment at weekends.

Marianna is also testing possible solutions, in conjunction with Bath’s Royal United Hospital (RUH). She will first work with clinicians in the acute stroke ward and emergency general surgery. Her three-year post is made possible by support from an anonymous donor, the RUH and the University.

Dr Christos Vasilakis, senior lecturer in the School of Management, is leading the joint project, saying “This is potentially a very important project for patients in the local area and around the world. It could save many thousands of lives.”

Gold + glucose = pain-free testing for diabetics The Alumni Fund has made an initial grant towards research that could reduce the need for daily blood testing in diabetics.

Diabetes is one of the major causes of death and disability in the world. In the long term it can lead to serious physiological complications such as heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease, nerve damage and premature mortality. To help control the illness, blood is regularly checked for glucose levels. This means daily injections and ‘finger prick’ tests become a fact of life for diabetes patients, causing discomfort and inconvenience. But a new technique using porous gold could pave the way for a simple, painless way to monitor blood glucose.

The level of glucose in sweat is directly related to the level of glucose in blood, but is very low. This means that, until now, it has been too difficult to detect to be useful. Dr Mirella Di Lorenzo is developing a special material made from highly porous gold (hPG) and carbon fibres which could be worn on the skin as a patch to monitor glucose in a simple, non-invasive way. The grant her team has received will help get this revolutionary project off the ground.

Di Lorenzo’s team will deposit hPG onto carbon fibres to generate their unique material. Thanks to its foam-like shape hPG is extremely reactive towards glucose. It is capable of sensing very low concentrations, which means it has enormous potential for use in sweat tests. Carbon fibres are highly flexible, have excellent conductivity and are easily compatible with the human body – they will not cause skin reactions – making them the perfect substrate.

This research therefore has great potential to develop wearable miniature glucose sensors which could significantly improve quality of life for those with diabetes.

Gifts from alumni have made it possible to run a three-month proof of concept study for this glucose sensor. The results of the study will be used to support a patent application, and begin to collaborate with medical companies who may be interested in taking the next step, to a commercial product or further development.

Importantly, the initial work will be performed by two undergraduate chemical engineering students Parsa Esfahanian (pictured) and Matthew Monti, who have the unique opportunity to contribute towards cutting-edge research at the University of Bath. Parsa says, “I feel privileged to be part of this research opportunity. Thank you to everyone who supports the Alumni Fund – we hope our new glucose sensors will make life much easier for diabetes patients, and I can’t wait to see it become widely available!” Matthew says, “As I have type 1 diabetes myself, this is a great opportunity to work on technology that could help other people with diabetes in the future, allowing pain-free and easy glucose monitoring. Thank you to all the Alumni Fund donors who have made this research possible.”

It’s a gift that supports the education of others, sparks new ideas and could lead in a small way to the betterment of society.”

Read more about revolutionising vaccine transportation at go.bath.ac.uk/vaccine-challenge

As a new graduate, I wanted to explore the world. I had been sponsored through my degree by Westland helicopters, but I had no long-term tie to them. All the big companies came to campus to recruit, and I chose Shell because of the importance of energy, the very international nature of the business and the opportunity of seeing other countries. I have now been at Shell for over 32 years, which was never my expectation, but have enjoyed spending over half of my varied career living and working outside the UK, in Australia, the Middle East, the Caribbean and the Far East.

The importance of ambitionI moved into commercial business early on. My degree in Materials Science allowed me to open that door; in any organisation with significant amounts of technology, it helps to have a sound technical understanding because it gives you an appreciation of what you’re trying to promote, develop or sell. That knowledge is important for success in the commercial world.

One of the main pieces of advice I give people starting out in a new business or within an existing career is: it’s vital to have ambition. This is different from aspiration. The two terms are often mixed up, but ambition is a ‘doing’ word, aspiration is a ‘hoping’ word. Politicians always talk about aspiration more! In your career, your ambitions may adjust as your circumstances change and your life evolves, but it is important to commit to delivering your ambitions both personally and professionally.

Reconnecting with BathAfter a lengthy period working overseas, I returned to the UK in 2011. I had a very busy lifestyle, travelling for three weeks out of every four, and my children were starting to become independent. It was one of those times of transformation that most of us go though in our lives. The family commitments and ambitions that take time, money and effort were all changing. The end of my career was looking closer than the distant horizon. I was entering a different phase, thinking ‘What else do I want to achieve? Is there a different impact I want to have?’

That’s when I reconnected more deeply with the University. I had stayed in touch at a low level, but then I learned that Professor Colin Grant had recently been appointed as a Pro-Vice-Chancellor, to look at the internationalisation of the University in a more holistic way. Given my experience, I felt this was something I could contribute to, and I was fortunate

to be appointed a Senior International Adviser, giving some of my time and international experience to the University. Then thinking about becoming a donor, I wanted to support something towards which I would feel a strong affinity, and I soon learned about the vaccines transportation project that Asel Sartbaeva is leading. It was a fascinating and inspirational germ of an idea with huge potential behind it – to make vaccines more stable for transport without relying on a refrigerated cold chain. Everything came together at the right time, and I felt that this was a project to which I could contribute and hopefully make a real difference. It’s a gift that supports the education of others, sparks new ideas and could lead in a small way to the betterment of society.

I believe that being a donor is deeply personal, and I hope that my support for the vaccines project is just the start of a long relationship with Bath. All reasons are equally valid for giving, and it doesn’t matter how big or small your contribution is. I also believe that becoming a donor at Bath is linked to the idea of ambition that I mentioned earlier – it can be a part of what you are trying to achieve as your wider aim in life. I’m fortunate to connect with this inspirational programme and though there are no guarantees, I hope it will lead to something significant.

Getting inside the mind of misunderstood communities

Social problems in developing countries are often approached from an external, Western perspective. But thanks to a fellowship donated anonymously by a Bath alumnus, Dr Shahid Perwez is able to provide better understanding of the motivations behind some of the world’s most controversial social issues. His work has so far covered female infanticide and public service brokerage in India, including field work living alongside people affected. His unique insight is attracting attention from several International Development agencies keen to apply his knowledge to other regions of the world, and further funding from a variety of organisations.

Shahid says, “It’s important to understand how the relationship works between people and the state, especially where groups are demonised and have to ‘go underground’. My areas of research are controversial, but could have huge implications for employment and family life in India and further afield.”

Graduates help send student to Russia on dream placement

With a grant from the Alumni Fund, undergraduate András Radnóti was able to travel to Russia for his ideal work placement working with Russian foreign policy. He says: “Things I love: Europe, Russia and the post-Soviet world. Things I’d like to work for: making Russia and Europe stronger by bringing them closer and forging understanding. Ways I’d like to achieve that: gaining knowledge and experience of Russian and European politics, society, history and culture; reflecting, analysing, and spreading the word. Opportunity: a semester-long research placement at a top Moscow foreign policy think-tank, made possible in part by the Alumni Fund.

I’ve finally got to do in a professional environment what I’ve long been doing in my free time: foreign policy research and analysis. With backing from Bath alumni, I’ve got my hands on resources I could thus far only dream of. I’ve made useful contacts and good friends, and met people with many years’ insight who could find the holes in my logic and point me to the things I have yet to learn: people who stimulate my thinking, who contribute to my personal and professional development. That, and the opportunity to publish my work, have made this placement a major stepping stone. Thank you.”

Page 23: Donor Report 2013-14

I was born in 1979 in Kioga County, Northern Uganda. My father had seven wives and because I am the last born of 38 children, my task was to graze our cattle. It was not until rustlers took away all our cattle that I managed to enrol in primary one class aged nine. Between attending secondary school and taking my A levels, I had to spend several years making bricks, digging and fishing to earn money for my fees. With all these struggles, I was still the best in my class. By saving some money from teaching I sat my A level examinations, and was admitted to study BSc Agriculture at Makerere University with government sponsorship, which I completed in 2008. Following this I joined the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) as a Crop Agronomist and that is where I stayed until coming to Bath.

Amidst all this, I married my wife Margret in the year 2010. We have three lovely children (two girls and a boy). Margret studied BA Urban and Regional Planning but with such a high unemployment rate in Uganda, she is keeping our children at home with no job. I am the only bread winner in my house. God should keep them safe in my absence until I return to continue supporting them again.

Sharing my knowledge to improve food security

My real interest is agricultural science which I can use to improve life for people in Uganda. I am researching on cassava, the most commonly grown food and considered a poor man’s crop, which grows and stores its roots under the ground. The problem is that after harvest, it only lasts for a few days before it goes bad through Post-harvest Physiological Deterioration (PPD). I am working hard to find ways to make it last longer and make it easier to transport, trade and keep this valuable food crop.

I am the only graduate in my family and I plan to be the first ever PhD holder in my sub county. There are very few people in Uganda who know about plant pathogens and insect identification using molecular tools. Upon successful completion of my course, my country will benefit from my experience, which I will share with technicians directly under my supervision. In addition, this course has taught me critical analysis and proofreading skills that I will use to increase the number of scientific publications and project proposals coming from NARO, placing Uganda at a global level. Giving back to the community is very important to me so I plan to run Plant Clinics and model farms for free learning in farming communities. I believe strongly that God will provide me with the resource to undertake this mission.

Thank you for a unique learning opportunity

Living independently in a developed country has taught me a lot of new skills, including using automation (from using a library card as a door key, to elevators in supermarkets and book borrowing in the library), understanding real English language, interacting with students from different countries, time management, personal development and travelling by rail and road. I have also cherished and copied the politeness of the English people; this will be instrumental in bringing up my children.

Financial support towards my studies has been the best gift of my life. I would like to thank the University of Bath, Stuart Appleton and the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission from the bottom of my heart for tuition that neither I nor my family members could provide. I pledge to complete this course successfully and share my knowledge for the benefit of farmers in Uganda and anywhere God might send me. Together, we shall make the world a food secure planet and a better place for everyone.

Financial support has never been more important to students. This is especially true for those who combine their degree

with intensive sports training, and are not able to commit to part-time work to provide extra income. The availability of Olympic-standard facilities on campus means fierce competition for a limited number of sports scholarships, so the bar is set extremely high. The majority of awardees have already represented their country at junior national level and go on to international success, driven by the encouragement and financial help that allows them to hone their talent.

Born in England and brought up in Poland, Jan Gosiewski is studying towards a PhD in Orthopaedic Biomechanics. He is also a member of the Great Britain Judo Squad and is aiming to win medals in the 2016 Olympics. Jan’s PhD is supported by the James Dyson Foundation, and he receives a scholarship from the Trendell family in recognition of his sporting achievements.

Jan comments, “Leading a double life as a full-time elite judo athlete and PhD student requires good time management, a lot of determination and hard work. I’m not going to lie; this is a very demanding task! But the past academic year has been very successful for me, both in sport and academia. I graduated with a distinction in MSc Engineering Design and produced some personal bests on the mat.”

Throughout 2013, Jan earned a host of medals competing in international tournaments, including a match during

busy exam week, and a team match above his weight class. He then self-funded to compete at the European Open in Warsaw, finishing third as the only medallist for GB. This was his first medal at this level and secured Jan a place on the team for the Senior European Championships in Budapest. Later that year his consistent

performances and a silver medal at the European Open in Tallinn qualified him for his first Senior World

Championships. These were held in Rio, from where Jan is planning to return with a medal in 2016. He also

defended his title as the British Champion, unfortunately sustaining an injury to the ligaments of his right knee.

For most of 2014, Jan has been in rehabilitation for his knee. Despite this he represented England at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and remains positive. “In a strange way, being injured was a blessing in disguise, allowing me to reevaluate my sporting goals and spend more time on my studies.”

Thankfully, Jan’s PhD supervisors are supportive of his ambitions. “I always take my research responsibilities seriously, and being in charge of my work allows me the flexibility to fit it around my training. I am regularly at the university from 9am until 10pm, shuttling between training and the office. Planning and good communication with my coach and supervisors make it manageable. For example, at the Commonwealth Games, my PhD work focused on reading and writing up some reports that I could take with me.”Such a high level of training and competition, combined with intense full-time study, means there is little time for paid work. Yet Jan still manages to undertake paid coaching to help cover Olympic qualification, living expenses and training costs. “I am very grateful for the help I am getting from my scholarships. However, realistically if I want to qualify for Rio I will need to self-fund to many events, which requires more financial support.”

With bright prospects in both biomechanics and competitive judo, Jan is philosophical about the career options open to him. He comments, “It is possible to have a career in both areas, which I have proved through my competition results and by already presenting some of my research at conferences. In fact there is a strong overlap of skills as both my PhD and training require hard work and discipline. After all, healthy body, healthy mind. It’s important to be doing it for the right reasons, to enjoy the journey, not just the end result, and to make time for a social life. The school of thought that training for judo full-time means only doing judo is very backward, and is damaging for the athlete. It is important to keep your education going, as it not only gives you a more rounded personality, but it provides you with a secure future after you have finished competing.

There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.”

Ivor Powell: capping off an inspirational lifeA sports scholarship remembers the UK’s oldest football coach

2014

To anyone asking, Ivor Powell MBE would passionately set out the characteristics he said were essential to every footballer who wanted to fulfil his talent: aggression, determination, the will to win, work rate and consistency of performance. He lived by these qualities which saw him still actively coaching football at the University at 93 years old, saying “While I’m here and I get the satisfaction and the pleasure out of it, I’ll carry on. I’m not tired of it at all.” Today, a new sports scholarship in Ivor’s name supports students who have the talent and tenacity to follow his philosophy and succeed.

Ivor’s career as a halfback began at Queens Park Rangers in 1936. Having worked in a South Wales coal

mine since the age of 14, he leapt at the opportunity to play professionally, saying,

“I clenched my fist that day and said to myself wholeheartedly: ‘I’m not going

down that bloody pit again’. I never did.” He later went on to play for Blackpool and Aston Villa, as well

as winning eight caps for Wales.

During World War Two, Ivor was posted on active service to India where, in his role as a drill sergeant PTI, he used football to help soldiers. After a period on the front line he

joined up with the forces’ football team to play 46 matches over 55 days to

entertain troops. “I’ve seen the snakes in India, I’ve seen the jungle and I’ve seen action, but what made us so proud was being able to go all over India playing football to give the others hope that they could face the situation of war,” Ivor commented.

It was also at this time that Ivor became firm friends with another RAF recruit – Stanley Matthews – who would later play alongside him for Blackpool and be best man at his wedding.

The Ivor Powell Scholarship was set up in Ivor’s memory, and is funded by donations from alumni and friends of the University. It provides support for undergraduates who are gifted both academically and in their chosen sport. The first award was made this academic year to Joseph Choong, a modern pentathlete with hopes of reaching the 2016 Olympics.

Joseph ChoongIvor Powell scholar Senior GB Champion, Modern Pentathlon

Training for Modern Pentathlon is very intense. The British Team is based here at Bath and my scholarship has really helped me achieve my best. It’s the little things that make a difference, like being able to eat in the sports café between training and lectures, and buying petrol to get to riding training sessions which are forty minutes’ drive away. As a direct result, my ranking for riding has improved and I feel much more confident. The scholarship was especially helpful when I was diagnosed with shin splints, and physiotherapy took a lot of time so it would have been difficult to work part time on top of trainingand studying too.

I hope I have lived up to Ivor’s memory so far. Since being at Bath I have been selected for high altitude training in the Pyrenees, and have also been to Budapest and Prague for competitions. I have established myself as a member of the British squad, and passed all of my exams and coursework. I hope my performances at the upcoming Junior World Championships could show the coaches I am ready to take the step up to Senior level and compete in Rio 2016.

I admire people who manage to combine high-level sport with a challenging academic course, which is why I support a scholarship for talented sportspeople. ”

Bill Whiteley (BSc Economics & Administration 1970) was one of the early students to graduate from

Bath. His successful career with actuator and flow control company Rotork took him abroad before bringing him home to Bath, where he now supports students who combine academic prowess with elite sporting potential.

An early Bath advantage

I started at Bath in the first year the University opened – 1966 – when I was only 17. The buildings in Bath were rather black and smoky, and you could find a central flat relatively cheaply then. I paid £2 a week for mine! It was an era when lots of new universities were starting, especially around technology, and it was unclear how their reputations would develop. It’s been very interesting to see how Bath has become the most successful of those universities. It doesn’t happen by chance. Since the early days, Bath has maintained its focus on vocational courses and had a good record of graduate employment. Now, of course, it has become very popular and can demand high entry qualifications.

My course set me up well for a career in industry. Although the concept of industrial placements was still new, the University organised one for me working with British Concorde on a prototype. Then I did another placement with a management consultancy. Both placements, though short, gave me an advantage in the job market.

Using my degree skills across the Atlantic

As a graduate I joined Bowater, a paper company which was one of the top 20 businesses then. My boss, the Finance Director, moved to Rotork and asked me to go with him, which I did; it was a small, attractive company with lots of international trade links. I became their Finance Director relatively young, in my 20s, and was then given the opportunity to run their North American operations: a year-long job that became nine years! My degree had taught me to think logically, and gave me a broad span of knowledge across economics, law, marketing, accounting and finance which helped me make easier and better decisions.

Talented athletes, talented business mindsI enjoy maintaining my association with Bath through my gift. I really admire the way the University has developed over the years – its senior staff have got it right in terms of positioning for the future. What’s surprised me is the huge development in the sports facilities. As a student I played squash on a dilapidated old court in town that we were lucky to find. Now, the Sports Training Village is truly something to be proud of, for the city and for graduates like myself.

I admire people who manage to combine high-level sport with a challenging academic course, which is why I support a scholarship for talented sportspeople. Academic and sporting high-achievers have a good choice of universities now, so my intention is to help Bath maintain its pre-eminence in sport by encouraging the best talent. As I see with the scholars I support, Alex and Georgie, they have huge demands on their time and energy, and a lot of extra expenses connected with their sports, so I felt it was a good way of using the money I wanted to give the University. I’ve been very impressed with the scholars. They are highly focussed and come across extremely well, and it’s been really enjoyable supporting them.

I’m not suggesting that everyone should be a sportsperson, but I think that being competitive and focused is an important part of life. It’s a worldwide phenomenon that high-achieving individuals in the business world have often been talented at sports as well, and every country in the world values its sportspeople. If you can combine that talent with academic ability, you have every chance of achieving success.
