Inside this issue:
Most people that live in the surrounding area of the Gulf of Mexico know that
hurricane season starts June 1st and ends November 30th. However, there are
several myths about hurricanes that need to be debunked.
Myth #1 - Hurricanes are dangerous - Don’t worry about the 74 mph+ winds
when storm surge causes more fatalities than any other hazard. Understand, that rip currents and
waves are only a threat to the coast and inland flooding (while most frequent) is over-emphasized.
Myth #2 Pre-determine Evacuation Plans - If told to evacuate, figure out where to go during the
moment. Don’t fret about pet friendly centers, where’s your sense of adventure?
Myth #3 Update your insurance - Nobody needs an annual review with their insurance
professional. Everyone knows flood insurance has a 30 day waiting period (except for new
purchases) and all insurance company coverage is identical (my kingdom for a sarcasm font).
Myth #4 You need hurricane supplies - Medicine and First Aid supplies should be readily available after the devastation
wipes out every last vestige of civilization as you knew it. Therefore, stocking up food, water (7 days worth per person),
gasoline and money seems like a lot of unnecessary effort. It will all work out if we all rely on
the government.
Myth #5 You should strengthen your home - No need to shop now for window coverings,
quality DIY stores never run out of those supplies . Keeping trees trimmed around the home will
not provide enough shade for any loose patio furniture left outside. Lastly, don’t put your car in
the garage, that’s where you keep all your trinkets and clutter.
Myth # 6 Hurricane information is readily available - Advanced technology means we will never have a problem with
cable and satellite TV reception (not so sure about the electric companies). And, NOAA Weather Radio’s can cost as
much as $20! Thankfully, all cell towers should be up and operating so we can confidently rely on our smart phones.
Myth #7 Be prepared - I refuse to believe that old adage that says “Most people don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan.”
Most of my success had hinged on the belief of, “winging it.” Since when do we all have to become Boy Scouts? I
don’t need to write it down, list all possessions, inform all family members of the plan or gather important documents. I
won’t forget anything because I have a memory foam pillow.
Naturally, the goal is to direct you towards realizing the importance of being prepared NOW, to avoid anguish later.
Sarcasm aside, please feel free to contact us for more information on preparedness or visit www.ready.gov/hurricanes.

Misconceptions About the Paleo Diet By Eileen Forte
People often ask me about what it means to follow a Paleo Diet. Here’s the top 10 misconceptions people
have when it comes to: what to eat and how to follow this amazingly super healthy diet.
The purpose of a Paleo Diet. It is meant to reduce inflammation in the body. That’s it. Reducing inflammation reduces
your risk. Here are my before and after pictures.
The main rule for Paleo is that we do not eat grains. You know, pasta, white flour, corn,
legumes, peas and beans (and most dairy). Dairy is not included in the diet, but I step a little
outside of the lines there and eat dairy from grass-fed animals.
1. “Oh, that’s where you eat just meats right?” No, not right. We don’t eat any more protein
than one normally would however, it is the quality of the protein that we eat. Fish is wild
caught, beef is grass-fed, and pork and chicken are pastured. We avoid processed foods that includes our protein.
2. Paleo is similar to an Atkins Diet and you just cut down carbs. Again, a misconception. We eat veggies and fruits
appropriate to our lifestyle. We enjoy primarily low sugar fruits: dates, strawberries, blueberries and the like. While
we reduce high-sugar fruit like pineapples and bananas (especially for those trying to regulate blood sugar).
3. Bacon, Bacon Bacon – MYTH! Bacon is included however, it is nitrite-free, uncured bacon eaten in moderation.
4. Paleo is a fad diet. I have worked with a host of people with all kinds of ailments. Witnessing their successes and
listening to their excitement after doctors tell them they can reduce and even stop medication…this is no fad. .
5. Eggs aren’t good for you, only eat the whites. Dietary cholesterol and blood serum cholesterol are different.
Studies at Harvard Medical confirmed there’s no connection between cholesterol levels while eating eggs.
6. Paleo diet is harder than other diets. No, we don’t measure, count calories and are never hungry. The hard part is
staying away from quick fix processed foods.
7. Paleo is expensive. Like anything else, quality food costs more. Thankfully, food choices made today will impact
how you feel tomorrow.
8. Saturated fats are a no-no. Fats are not evil, they are necessary and beneficial. The right kinds of fats matter.
9. You can’t have salt. Yes we can! Kosher or sea salt used in moderation is OK
10. Gluten free is NOT Paleo. Watch for “gluten substitutes” (rice/potato starch, tapioca etc.)

“The meal isn’t over when I’m full, the meal is over when I hate myself.” Louis C.K.
Some insurance companies are like the mafia.
They have to scare you into buying protection.
Their sales pitch is, “That’s a nice family you’ve
got! Be ashamed if something happened to
them.”

The gifted violinist Niccolo Paganini was standing before a packed house, playing through a difficult piece
of music. A full orchestra surrounded him with full support. Suddenly, one string on his violin snapped and
hung limply down from his instrument. He frowned but continued to play, improvising beautifully. To the
conductor's surprise, a second string broke, and shortly after, a third. Now there were three strings dangling,
yet, the master performer completed the difficult composition on the remaining one string. The audience
jumped to its feet and in good Italian fashion filled the hall with shouts of "Bravo! Bravo!"
As the applause died down, the violinist asked the people to sit back down. Even though they knew there
was no way they could expect an encore, they quietly sank back to their seats. He held the violin up high for
every one to see. He nodded at the conductor to begin the encore and then turned back to the crowd. With a
twinkle in his eye, he smiled and shouted, "Paganini and one string!" After that he placed the single-string
Stradivarius beneath his chin and played the final piece on one string as the audience shook their heads in
silent amazement. Our lives may very well be filled with troubles, worries, and disappointments. Frankly,
we spend too much time concentrating and fretting over the strings that snap, dangle and pop and the things
that can't be changed! Are you still agonizing over your snapped strings in life? Is the one string that you are
left with being played out of tune? If so, may I encourage you to look not back, press on, and start playing
the single string again. Let it yield a sweet, winsome melody that the world needs so desperately. You can if
you will.

Insurance News Making Headlines
In a unanimous vote, the U.S. House of Representatives passed The Flood Insurance Market
Parity and Modernization Act on April 28, 2016. This law effectively allows lenders to accept
private flood insurance solutions to meet mandatory purchase requirements for federally backed
mortgages. This is largely viewed as a positive development in the insurance marketplace,
fostering competition and providing an alternative to the debt laden National Flood Insurance
Program (NFIP) run by the U.S. government. While the bill advances to the Senate with strong support, the time
frame remains uncertain. We expect that passage of the bill will encourage development of a private flood insurance
market that can complement and compete with the NFIP, and provide alternatives to insurance
buyers in high risk areas. We are prepared to respond to these developments for our clients
with flood insurance solutions utilizing high quality insurers who have proven track records in
the high risk property marketplace. As further information about this important decision
become more clear, we will communicate those results to our friends. We look forward to
serving you with NFIP alternatives as soon as possible!
