One of Stirling’s two surviving bastions from which cannons were fired upon invaders. This circular domed beehive bastion built into the old town wall dates from the 16th century and is Category A Listed and a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The bastion is rarely open to the public so come and take a tour of the site with Allan’s pupils, as part of their history project.

Battle of Bannockburn Heritage Centre WalkSun 16th Sep 11.00am130 Glasgow Road, St Ninian’s, Stirling FK7 0LJ

The site of Robert the Bruce’s famous victory over Edward 2nd’s army in 1314. Join a walk of the Battle of Bannockburn site led by a National Trust for Scotland (NTS) employee.

The walk is approximately 7 miles long so a reasonable level of fitness is required and appropriate clothing is essential (Bannockburn centre is open 10.00-5.30).

The Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297 is one of Scotland’s most famous and horrific, resulting in the deaths of almost 6000 troops. Follow in the footsteps of William Wallace and Andrew de Moray and join this walk led by the Council archaeologist, Murray Cook.

A lost 2000-year-old Roman road which was used in the Battle of Bannockburn runs through Beechwood park. Come and help find the road and try your hand at geophysics with GUARD Archaeology Ltd.

Cambuskenneth Abbey, Ladysneuk Road, Stirling FK9 5NH

In1326 Robert the Bruce held parliament in Cambuskenneth Abbey and in the 1480s King James III and his queen were buried there. Today the freestanding bell-tower is all that remains of this thirteenth-century abbey. The two events at this site will include a tour of the abbey and the opportunity to join in a dig. The bell-tower is rarely open to the public so come and get a tour of the site and enjoy the spectacular views from the tower. The dig will explore both the medieval abbey and its associated village, and the role

they played in the battle of Bannockburn.

Everyone is welcome. Come and take a guided tour of the building or collect a leaflet and have a look around yourself. This is a fantastic chance to meet members of the local Muslim community and learn about the centre. There will be opportunities to ask questions of the tour guides and the Imam of the Mosque on any aspect of Islamic tradition or teachings. There will be samples of food from various parts of the Muslim world as well as various stalls, including Islamic clothing, books and even henna painting.

It is kindly requested that ladies wear a trousers and a scarf. This is in keeping with the Islamic tradition.

Built originally in 1639 as an almshouse after a deathbed bequest by local merchant John Cowane, the hospital’s E-shaped plan was unusual in Scotland at the time of its construction. It is maintained by the Cowane Trust and is in excellent condition.

The Dementia Services Development Centre is housed in the purpose-built Iris Murdoch Building and is an innovative example of dementia-friendly design in practice. The Design & Technology Suite showcases practical design solutions for people with dementia and their carers. Browse the library, which houses one of the UK’s largest collections of publications on dementia, and purchase books from our bookshop. Award-winning landscape architect Annie Pollock of Arterre Landscapes will give a talk on “Designing Outdoor Spaces for People with Dementia”. Annie and Mary Marshall (emeritus professor University of Stirling) have recently co-edited a book, Designing Outdoor Spaces for People with Dementia, which will be available to view and purchase.

The building dates from 1875/6 and was partially converted in 1920 by Sir Robert Lorimer, the well-known architect and promoter of the Arts and Crafts movement. Stephen Digney, of the Stirling Local History Society, will talk on the King’s Knot and their recent work there.

The oldest purpose-built library in Scotland, the Leighton Library has almost 4,500 books printed in 89 languages, including Gaelic, Greek, Persian and Syrian.

Now a National Trust for Scotland property, this cruck frame cottage and byre from the nineteenth century with original hingin’ lum and box beds was only abandoned in the 1950s. Excavations have recovered artefacts that have been used in an interpretation of the building.

Once home to James Graham, Marquis of Montrose, Mugdock Castle has a great history spanning 700 years. Visitors can enjoy entry to both the castle ruin and fourteenth-century southwest tower and enjoy the history of this site.

Stirling Astronomical Society regularly uses the Observatory; its revolving copper dome houses a Newtonian reflector telescope. Members of the Stirling Astronomical Society will conduct half hour visits to the Observatory with telescope viewing on both the evenings of Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th to view the night sky.

The Pathfoot Building dates from 1966/7. With its light and airy courtyards and multi-level concourse gallery it is an outstanding example of post-war modernist architecture. The University has an extensive art collection on view throughout the building and located around the garden grounds, including works by Brigid Collins, Lotte Glob, Henryk Gotlib, Lys Hansen, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Alberto Morrocco, Eduardo Paolozzi and Willie Rodger among many others.

Randolphfield Geophysics and Tour of StonesTue 18th SepThis is an all day event, tours will be available at various times.

Randolphfield, St Ninian’s Road, Stirling FK8 2HW. Meet outside Randolphfield Police HQ.

Randolphfield was the scene of a skirmish between Thomas Randolph, the Earl of Moray and the English in 1314 during the Battle of Bannockburn. Two stones were said to have been erected to mark the victory. Come and learn about their secrets and see geophysics by GUARD Archaeology Ltd.

Come and have a tour behind the scenes of the archive and a chance to chat to archive staff. The archive will not be open for research enquiries on the day but advice on enquiries can be given to be pursued during normal opening hours.

One of Stirling’s most popular Doors Open Days visits. The interior retains many original features, including the impressive hammer-beam roof of the main courtroom and original seating. See round the courtrooms and take a tour of the cells.

Ten in a group, no fixed times, tours last 20 minutes. Tours of the Court building will be available as and when required with a maximum of 10 in a group. Tour duration will be approximately 20 minutes.

The front façade dates back to the former Erskine Church of 1824 and is all that remains after an arson attack in the 1980s. The memorial in front of the hostel marks the original church on this site.

There will be an exhibition of the Freedom Versions Project in the Forum Room. Find out about the work of Creative Stirling, come and meet volunteers who work for the social enterprise and view the facilities. There will also be an overview and discussion opportunity on the Year of Creative Scotland Freedom Versions Project, 2012–13.

Tea and coffee will be provided for Doors Open Day visitors. Unfortunately this year there is no discounted entry to the Old Town Jail Visitor Attraction.

The Stirling Martyrs Walking TourSat 15th Sep 1.00 and 3.00pmTue 18th Sep 6.30pmMeet at the Tolbooth, Jail Wynd, Stirling FK8 1DE

On the 8th of September 1820 John Baird and Andrew Hardie were the last people ever to be executed in Stirling. The Government called them traitors and revolutionaries – but Baird and Hardie insisted that they only wanted political and social reform. Hear more of their story on this guided architectural and historical tour led by Emily Malcolm. The tour will visit the Tolbooth’s auditorium (lift available).

The TolboothSat 15th Sep 10.00-18.00Jail Wynd, Stirling FK8 1DE

Re-opened in 2002 after a sensational restoration and redesign by award-winning architect Richard Murphy, the Tolbooth has established a reputation as one of the best live music venues in the country. Located right at the heart of Stirling’s Old Town, in the past the Tolbooth has been a town hall, a courthouse and a jail, and is the site of the last ever execution in Stirling. There will be access to public areas, including a viewing platform on level 8, and short tours of certain backstage areas of the building, including the “Death Cell” and lighting grid.

The Tolbooth’s bar/cafe will be open throughout the day selling tea, coffee and lovely cakes. Control, a dance event, takes place in the Tolbooth on the evening of Saturday 15th September: tickets may still be available to purchase from the Tolbooth’s Box Office and Doors Open Day visitors will receive a 25% discount.

European Heritage Days

Doors Open Days and Scottish Archaeology Month (supported by Historic Scotland) are Stirling’s contribution to European Heritage Days, which take place throughout Europe each September.

Once a year, people in 49 countries celebrate Europe’s cultural heritage. European Heritage Days have been happening since 1999. They were launched by the Council of Europe in 1991 and are now run by the Council of Europe and the European Commission.

European Heritage Days put new cultural assets on view and open up historical buildings normally closed to the public. The events highlight local skills and traditions, architecture and works of art, but the broader aim is to bring people from different cultures, who speak different languages, together in harmony.
