National Church Music Sunday

Our mission… is to become Disciples of Christ, through thought, word and deed, humbly submitting to the will of the Father, while seeking the Holy Spirit

to achieve Salvation. Our Vision… with the Grace of God, is to provide a loving community

where all belong to Christ, through worship, sanctification, education, witness, compassion and fellowship.

The Miracle: Jesus raising from the dead the widow’s son in Nain.

In today’s Gospel reading, we hear how Jesus raised from the dead the widow’s son. And when the young man began to speak, the Bible says that fear came upon all of the people and they glorified God. So what kind of fear was it? The answer is found in the people’s response to their fear. They gave honor and re-spect to God. They recognized the power and might of God. This kind of fear is a good fear. Fearing God means that you recognize that He is awesome and power-ful, but it also means that you realize that He loves you. It should cause us to turn away from our natural wants and glorify him in front of others so others may know His love. The other kind fear that is ungodly, it is the fear that frightens us and up-sets us. But that kind of fear needs to be brought to God. You can let His love for you calm your fear, for His perfect love will cast out that kind of fear as you grow closer to Him. Amen

WELCOME TO ALL VISITORS:

For those visiting an Orthodox Church for the first time, we welcome you and thank you for praying with us. When it comes time for the receiving of the Holy Communion from the Chalice, please be aware that Holy Communion is a sign of unity of faith and it is only offered to Baptized or Chrismated Orthodox Christians. All present are welcome, however, to partake of the antidoro (blessed bread) which is distributed at the end of the service. If you are interested in learning more about the Or-thodox Faith, please see Father Sarantis after the service.

3rd Sunday of Luke 3rd Antiphon: The Hymn of the Day – Tone 2: (Page 92 in the green hymnal)

( ) When You descended unto death, O Life immortal, You rendered to Hades a mor-tal blow by the lightning of your divinity, and when from the depths of darkness, You also raised the dead, all the heavenly powers cried out: O giver of life, Christ our God, glory to you.

Eisodikon (Hymn of the Entrance): Come, let us worship and bow down before Christ. Save us, O Son of God risen from the dead, we sing to you: Alleluia. Resurrection Hymn of the Day – Tone 2: (Page 92 in the green hymnal)

( ) When You descended unto death, O Life immortal, You rendered to Hades a mor-tal blow by the lightning of your divinity, and when from the depths of darkness, You also raised the dead, all the heavenly powers cried out: O giver of life, Christ our God, glory to you.

The Hymn of Sergios and Bakchos – Tone 4:

(Οἱ Μάρτυρές σου Κύριε , ) Your Martyrs, O Lord, were worthily awarded by You the crowns of incorrup-tion, in that they contested for You our immortal God. Since they possessed Your power, they defeated the tyrants, dashing the demons' powerless displays of defi-ance. O Christ God, at their fervent entreaties, save our souls.

The Hymn of the Church – Tone 1: …) In giving birth you remained a virgin and in your Dormition you did not forsake this world, O Theotokos. For as the Mother of Life you have yourself passed into life, and by your prayers you deliver our souls from death.

Kontakion of the Feast – Tone 2: (page 111 in the green hymnal) (Προστασία τῶν Χριστιανῶν ...) The protection of Christians unshameable, intercessor to our Holy Maker, unwa-vering, do not turn from the prayerful cries of those who are in sin, instead come to us, for you are good; your loving help bring unto us, who are crying in faith to you. Hasten to intercession and speed now to supplication as a protection for all time, Theotokos for those who honor you.

Epistle Reading: II Corinthians 11:31-33; 12:1-9 (Holy Cross book pg. 95)

Brethren, the God and Father of the Lord Jesus, he who is blessed for ever, knows that I do not lie. At Damascus, the governor under King Aretas guarded the city of Damascus in order to seize me, but I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall, and escaped his hands.

I must boast; there is nothing to be gained by it, but I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord. I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven -- whether in the body or out of the body I do not

know, God knows. And I know that this man was caught up into Paradise --whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows -- and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter. On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weak-nesses. Though if I wish to boast, I shall not be a fool, for I shall be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me. And to keep me from being too elated by the abundance of revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Sa-tan, to harass me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I besought the Lord about this, that it should leave me; but he said to me, "My grace is suffi-cient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." I will all the more gladly boast of my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Gospel Reading: Luke 7:11-16 (Holy Cross book pg. 97) At that time, Jesus went to a city called Nain, and his disci-ples and a great crowd went with him. As he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a wid-ow; and a large crowd from the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all; and they glori-fied God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!"

***The Ushers will dismiss the congregation row by row for receiving the Holy Communion***

Introduction to Orthodoxy Class for Adults Dormition of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church offers an introductory course on the Orthodox Church taught by Fr. Sarantis Lou-lakis. The one-hour class surveys the history, spirituality, doctrine, and worship of the Ortho-dox Church. The The class is especially intend-ed for those who are thinking about converting to Orthodoxy and for family members and friends who would like to support them on their journey, but it is also open to people who are already Orthodox and who would like to deepen their understanding of their faith. The class explores Christian theology and practice through reading selections of Scripture, the Church Fathers, the lives of the Saints, and other texts representative of the Orthodox worldview. These readings are the starting point for our discussions, which aim at clarifying doctrine and worship and helping us to discover (or rediscover), week after week, why we belong in the Church.

Classes will be held (Bi-weekly) every OTHER Wednesday night at 7:00pm in church starting on October 17th, 2018. Occasionally the class date and time may be changed with ample time of notice. If you are in-terested in attending the class, please contact Fr. Sarantis Loulakis at [email protected] with any questions.

Philoptochos is pleased to announce that they will once again be sponsoring a Seasonal Flu Shot Clinic on Sunday, October 21st immediately after church. Our own Dr. Emily Mihelich, a pharmacist for Walmart, is coordi-nating this event. The cost for the flu shot is $25, however, it is covered by Medicare Part B and D, United Health Care, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, and most insurances. Please bring your in-surance card and check with your provider if you are uncertain. This shot includes both the H1N1 and seasonal flu immunizations. The Prayer of the Second Antiphon (From the Divine Liturgy) Priest (in a low voice): Lord, our God, save Your people and bless Your inheritance. Protect the fullness of Your Church. Sanctify those who love the beauty of Your house. Glorify them in return by Your divine power, and forsake us not who have set our hope in You. For Yours is the dominion, and Yours is the Kingdom and the power and the glory, of the Fa-ther and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, now and forever and to the ages of ages.

Third Annual Philoptochos “Care Kits for the Homeless” Drive Our Ladies Philoptochos invites you to participate in our third annual “Care Kits for the Homeless” drive. This pro-ject allows us to create something to share with those asking for assistance, without trying to judge their needs on our own. From September 2nd to October 21st we will be collecting these items: Winter hats Winter gloves Thick socks Wet wipes Band-Aids Chapstick Protein Bars Peanut butter or cheese crackers Beef Jerky sticks Bottled water

*Note: The majority of these items can be found at Dollar Tree stores! Philoptochos members will assemble the Care Kits at our October general meeting. Once completed, the kits will be available for all parishioners to take and share with those in need. Care Kits give us a very real way to help the less fortunate in our Greensboro community. They are also a wonderful learning opportunity for families as they collect supplies and distribute Care Kits. Questions? Contact Erin Blindenbacher ([email protected]), Catherine Stout ([email protected]) or Emily Mihelich ([email protected])

Ladies Philoptochos The Ladies Philoptochos will host a Seasonal Flu Shot Clinic on Sunday, October 21st, immediately following church, in the Fellowship Hall. Your generous support will help those less fortunate in our community. Our next Food Bank collections through October will also focus on the neediest students in Guilford County and will be donated to the Backpack Beginnings program. This organization serves over 7000 students experiencing hunger in our community by providing backpacks of weekend food and also stocking Food Pantries in 19 Guilford County Middle and High Schools.
