Term 1 in the kitchen has been great, with the children eager to harvest and start cooking. Over the next few weeks we will harvest our huge pumpkins and cook some yummy dishes, e.g. Pumpkin Chocolate Cake, Risotto and Moroccan Salad. Students who have just started in the program are learning about knife safety and building up their skills in chopping vegetables. Any new helpers are always welcome! Ciao from me. Chaplain’s Chat

Dorset Primary School

dolls house project

As we journey together through this term, my role as

chaplain may include running projects, conducting

small groups (Hi 5’s) or continuing to meet with

individual students and parents.

On Monday this week my six monthly review took

place as I met with John Jacobs, Palma Coppa and my

supervising manager ACCESS Ministries

Ruth Whitefield.

A Special thank you to John Jacobs and Palma Coppa

for their support in my role, it is greatly appreciated.

It’s amazing how fast the six months has gone,

however there is plenty to be done and as part of a

welfare based team, with a great staff a lot can be

achieved to ensure the wellbeing of the school

community.

One initiative that has begun this week is the

commencement of students building a Dorset Primary

School dolls house with a difference. This project will

bring together students each week from Grade 3-6 who

have the opportunity to learn while building a creative

dolls house.

Tools will be used but

closely supervised by myself

and all care is taken.

Each week a grade will be

selected to be involved in

this project.

Kind regards

Take care

Inter school Summer Sport

Last week children in grades 5&6 competed in the

first round of the Summer sport competition.

I was particularly pleased with reports received

about behavior and sportsmanship from our

children. A couple of staff from Park Orchards

went out of their way to compliment our children

on the way they played the games.

Hello everyone,

Welcome to MLC Tennis Hot Shots

MLC Tennis Hot Shots is Tennis Australia’s official development program for primary aged children. At the core of MLC Tennis Hot Shots is the use of tailored equipment including smaller nets, racquets and low-compression tennis balls. This ensures children are introduced to tennis in an environment which is suited to their age and skill level and makes learning tennis fun and easy.

The aim of the MLC Tennis Hot Shots Community program is to provide your children with an opportunity to play tennis in a fun, supportive environment. Participants will serve, rally and score when playing in team competitions which are appropriate for their developmental stage (red, orange or green).

The focus will be on enjoying playing the game with old and new friends and being a good sport.

Dorset Primary School 2013 Specialist Art Program For those of you who don’t know me my name is Kirsten Haworth and I am Dorset Primary School’s “Artist in Residence”. You may have seen me around the school painting a wall here and there. I have been involved in Art my whole life. I am a Textile/Graphic Designer by trade and have worked in the Melbourne clothing industry for 12 years. 4 years ago I started my own design/screenprinting business from home and print tea towels, bags, aprons and canvas’s and you will find me every Sunday down at the St Kilda Esplanade market selling my designer home wares. Around 8 years ago I started here at Dorset finding blank walls and getting students to help me design and paint them. Now I can’t stop and have endless ideas for every blank Dorset wall I see! My latest project is in the Peace Garden where I am currently working on a great big tree of clay owls that the grade 3/4, grade 4 and grade 5’s made at the end of last year. The children all did an outstanding job so if you haven’t seen it make sure you make time to come for a visit. Come and sit on our amazing clay face outdoor couch that we made for the grade six 2012 graduation art piece and soak up the serenity. This year John and Palma have asked me to come back and work with all the children to help to produce some fabulous artworks for our 2013 DORSET PRIMARY SCHOOL ART SHOW. The Art Show will be inspired by our fantastic S.A.K.G Program and will involve lots of imagination and fantasy so we can all find out what really is at the bottom of Dorset Primary Schools Garden! This is a really exciting family event and will be held over 2 days this year starting on Friday 21st of June and finishing on Saturday 22nd of June. The children just absolutely love it and are so proud to show off their fabulous art skills. I will be working with all grades weekly for term 1 and 2 starting from next week. We are going to be using a lot of recycled items for our artworks this year so I was hoping a few items that we need could be collected at home and then dropped into the office for us to use. Below are a few things we need……. Plastic Bottle Tops….(milk bottles, fizzy bottles etc) all shapes, sizes and colours… Fizzy Drink Bottles….(any size) all washed out with the lid intact Empty Cereal Boxes Thanks so much. Also I am more than happy to have parent volunteers in the classrooms anytime you would like to help. Just ask your child’s teacher when I am due to come into their class and I would love to see you. Kind regards Kirsten

Parking Around School Please adhere to the parking regulations around the school, as parking inspectors are always ‘circling’ the school. Could you please be helpful in parking correctly and allowing as many cars to park in the spaces provided. It is unhelpful if there is 3 metres between the cars. Thank you for your support.

Fees/Levies Thank you for your response to the payment of fees and levies. All programs running in the school will now be funded. There is no need for any cutbacks. I appreciate your commitment to our great school.

Peace Garden Thank you Kirsten Haworth and Year 3/4 children for the wonderful mural in the Peace Garden. It looks sensational. Make sure you take a look at the art work. The Peace Garden is such a beautiful area of our school.

Student Accidents Just a reminder that the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development does not provide personal accident insurance for students. Parents and guardians are generally responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including any transport costs. Reasonably low cost accident insurance policies are available from the commercial insurance sector.

Private Property at School Private property brought to school is the responsibility of the person bringing the item to school. The school and the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development are not responsible for any loss or damage to private property.

Parent Teacher Conferences These will take place the week commencing Monday 25th February. Notices will go home on Friday 15th February.

School Council Elections Notices for the upcoming School Council Elections will go home on Friday 15th February. If you are interested, please come and see me.

State Wide Strike - Thursday 14th February Thank you for your support of the staff of the school. Let’s hope a resolution to the many issues is forthcoming in the near future. I will be on duty at school. No extra curricular activities eg Karate, Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program will operate tomorrow.

Maroondah East Student Leadership Day It is with great pleasure that I can confirm that our school will be in attendance at the Maroondah East Cluster Student Leadership Program. The Student Leadership Day will be held on Wednesday 20th February, 2013 and will include seven primary schools from the Maroondah area. It will be facilitated by the highly experienced and inspirational trainer and consultant Kate Wilde, from The Workshop. We believe that this program will provide an excellent educational experience where our Year Six student leaders learn what it means to be a caring, confident leader and a good citizen. Students will be accompanied by Christine Finighan and will present their learnings at a later date in the year at a parent evening. An important aspect of the program is the peer educator approach, where ten Year 10 Heathmont College students will mentor and coach our student leaders. Not only will this program build the leadership skills of all the young people involved, but it will build a sense of community and active citizenship for the students, families and schools participating.

A special thanks must go out to Allan Minh Nguyen, Loan To, Sara Trewin and Fidela Van Der Straaten who volunteered their services to help in our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden this week. They took part in the NAB corporate volunteer for a day program and loved helping Anna and our children in the garden.

A happy and busy week. I have been able to spend time in the classrooms and everyone is working and trying very hard. Terrific.

Regards,

John Jacobs Principal
