Congratulations

on your forthcoming wedding

Dorset’s coast and countryside is truly outstanding,

but it is a county of many parts; a collection of fine

landscapes each with its own characteristics and sense

of place. Nearly half of the county is designated as an

area of outstanding natural beauty and the coastline

has been awarded World Heritage Site status, ranking

it as one of the natural wonders of the world.

If the landscape setting for your ceremony is important

to you, the next few pages of the brochure may help

you narrow your search for that fabulous venue.

One Thousand Words Photography

We would like to invite you to hold your ceremony in the County of Dorset, famously renowned as

the heart of Thomas Hardy’s Wessex. Dorset is a county of outstanding natural beauty revealing a

fascinating variety of landscapes that have over the centuries inspired poets, authors and artists.

These landscapes offer the idyllic setting for many of the fabulous venues where you can choose

to hold your wedding. This, combined with Dorset’s sense of timelessness and our approach to

creating your bespoke ceremony, all makes Dorset the ideal choice for your special day.

High chalk escarpments, spectacular panoramic

views, rolling countryside and the magnificent

Jurassic Coast, all combined with an amazing

sense of tranquillity. Welcome to West Dorset.

From the seaside town of Lyme Regis with its

maze of narrow streets that wind their way down

to the ancient Cobb harbour, the setting for the film

‘The French Lieutenant’s Woman’, to the beach at

Burton Bradstock which featured in the television

series ‘Broadchurch’, the Dorset coastline provides

a breathtaking backdrop for any ceremony.

Away from the coast is the place where time stands

still – such as the friendly market town of Bridport,

small towns like Beaminster with its beautiful

Georgian architecture, or Sherborne with its stunning

castle and Abbey – all nestled between green valleys

and wooded hills.

And then there is Dorchester, Thomas Hardy’s

fictional town of Casterbridge as featured in his

historic novel ‘The Mayor of Casterbridge’.

Dorchester is our county town – a jewel in the

crown surrounded by outstanding countryside.

South from Dorchester and over the Ridgeway

you descend towards Weymouth and beyond it

the Isle of Portland.

The area is famous for its major shingle structure,

Chesil Beach, an 18 mile long pebble beach that

stretches from West Bay to Portland and separated

from the mainland by the Fleet Lagoon. Romantic

tales of smuggling abound in this area especially

around the nearby village of East Fleet.

The Isle of Portland, at the end of Chesil Beach,

is home to spectacular wildlife and stunning views

across Portland Harbour, one of the largest man

made harbours in the world.

On the other side of the harbour lies Weymouth,

a bustling seaside resort with its Georgian and

Regency buildings, a three mile level promenade

giving access to soft golden sands and its historic,

picturesque harbour.

PAGE 6 | DORSET WEDDINGS

PurbeckThe Isle of Purbeck is one of the richest areas of

biodiversity in England. Butterflies, spider orchids,

nightjars, sand lizards and ladybird spiders are all

sheltered within its grass and heathlands.

The Isle is a peninsular surrounded on three sides

by the sea. Here you will find the iconic stone arches

of Durdle Door, the chalk stacks of Old Harry Rocks

and the perfect horseshoe bay of Lulworth Cove.

And at its southern tip is the Victorian seaside town

of Swanage, a traditional family resort.

Inland, the countryside reflects a ‘living landscape’ –

archaeological features such as hill forts and ancient

field systems abound. At its centre lies the imposing

medieval ruin of Corfe Castle, a lasting reminder of

betrayal and treachery from the English Civil War.

The gateway to the Isle of Purbeck is Wareham,

a former Royal Borough that sits between the rivers

Piddle and Frome. An ancient town, Wareham once

boasted one of the most important ports on the

south coast in the Middle Ages.

DORSET WEDDINGS | PAGE 7

When we reach the eastern most tip of the Purbeck

area we need to jump eastwards across the urban

conurbations of Poole and Bournemouth until we

re-enter the County of Dorset at Christchurch.

This area extends from Hurn in the west to Highcliffe

in the east and includes Christchurch town centre,

Highcliffe, Mudeford, Hurn (encompassing

Bournemouth Airport) and Burton. The area adjoins

Bournemouth in the west and the New Forest in

the east. It lies approximately 20 miles west of

Southampton and 23 miles south of Salisbury.

Christchurch, founded in the 7th century, is located

at the confluence of the rivers Stour and Avon.

These rivers flow directly into Christchurch Harbour

which contains large areas of salt marsh and is

protected by a sandbar known as Mudeford Spit

which has fine sandy beaches on both sides of a

walkway.

As we skip back westwards over the urban

conurbations of Bournemouth and Poole and

move slightly inland we once again return to the

County of Dorset. The area of East Dorset

provides a mosaic of open countryside, more

intimate pasture, dense woodland and extensive

colourful heathlands, blurring in places with the

outskirts of the New Forest.

East Dorset contains many of Dorset’s heathlands

and country parks with over 96% of them being

classified as ‘Sites of Special Scientific Interest’,

a designation given to the most valuable wildlife

habitats.

Wimborne Minster is the town that perhaps

is most associated with East Dorset with its

image of the Saxon Minster rising out over the

water meadows of the rivers Stour and Allen.

The bustling market town is steeped in history

and many 16th, 17th and 18th century fronted

shops and pubs can still be seen today.

DORSET WEDDINGS | PAGE 9

Finally we continue westwards from East Dorset to

North Dorset; a profoundly rural area. The classical

chalk landscape such as Cranborne Chase is

indisputably dramatic with areas of high rolling

downlands, steeply cut escarpments and dry river

valleys. The chalkland parishes weave themselves

into this remote landscape tapestry; some are hilltop

villages standing defensively whilst others seek

sheltered river valleys. The cottages, many cob or

flint and thatched, sit lightly and attractively within the

landscape, very often next to grand manor houses.

Due to the scattered nature of the settlements there

are several main market towns in the region; Blandford

located on the banks of the River Stour; the hilltop

saxon town of Shaftesbury with its stunning views

over three counties and also the home of ‘Gold Hill’

made famous by the ‘Hovis Bread’ advertisement

depicting a bygone age; Gillingham the most northerly

town in Dorset and once the seat of a royal hunting

lodge, and Sturminster Newton a delightful market

town situated in the heart of the Blackmore Vale.

Why choose a

Civil Ceremony?Today, in addition to the Register Office, ceremonies can take place at any licensed venue such as stately

homes and castles, hotels and inns, tourist attractions, converted barns, village halls and garden rooms.

What’s more, in Dorset your ceremony can be bespoke and providing the ceremony is ‘dignified’ almost

anything goes; other than ensuring that your ceremony contains the required legal words and confirming

that it does not contain any religious content you are free to be as creative as you wish.

and are a popular choice in Dorset

Thank you so much for our wonderful wedding ceremony. It was just perfect and your

words were so personal and made it very special for us. It’s a day we will never forget.‘‘ ’’

DORSET WEDDINGS | PAGE 11

Where and when can we hold our

Civil Ceremony?Dorset has a fabulous choice of wedding venues throughout the County to suit all types of ceremony,

whether you dream of a grand affair in a castle or a smaller, relaxed ceremony in a unique location, the

choice is yours. All of our licensed venues can be found on pages 12 to 15, with further details on our

website: www.dorsetforyou.com/ceremonyvenues.

Alternatively, you may choose to get married at one of our seven ceremony rooms or at the Register

Office in Dorchester, please see pages 16 to 17 for more information.

There are no restrictions regarding when you can hold your wedding ceremony; they can be held on

any day at any time although generally most couples choose between the hours of 11.00am and 6.00pm.

If however you would like a ‘twilight ceremony’ please contact us to discuss your requirements.

Would you like your wedding overlooking the sea, set in the beautiful

countryside or perhaps in a cosy venue with a blazing log fire?

OutdoorCeremonies

Do you long to get married in a wood or garden beside

a lake or near the sea?

According to the law in England and Wales, a marriage

must be held within a permanent, immovable structure

consisting of at least a room. Outdoor ceremonies in

the true sense of the word are therefore not permitted.

However ‘garden structures’ are allowed providing they

are licensed and this gives couples the closest legal

option to holding their ceremony outdoors.

If you would like to hold your ceremony in a beautiful

garden, a romantic rural setting or in a gazebo with

spectacular sea views, in Dorset the choice is yours.

We have a wide choice of venues that offer licensed

‘garden structures’ such as gazebos, summerhouses

and pavilions which are set in idyllic, unique locations.

v Plan your ceremony

v Pay for your ceremony

What do we need to do?

PAGE 24 | DORSET WEDDINGS

Page 25: Dorset Weddings 2016 (pdf, 8Mb) (opens in a new window)

Book your venue and our RegistrarsIn most cases you will need to separately book both the venue and our Registrars; some venues

will be able to book the Registrars on your behalf, please check with the venue when booking.

Once your wedding is booked with us (either directly or via your venue), we will send you a

ceremony pack which will guide you through preparing for your ceremony.

Give notice of your intention to marryThis is a legal requirement that you both have to complete in person, with a Registrar in the

registration district in which you live, before your marriage can take place. Please see pages

26 and 27 for more information.

Planning your ceremonyYour ceremony can be as simple or sophisticated as you wish; what is important to us, is finding

out what matters to you. We will invite you to book a ceremony consultation meeting with us and

an experienced Registrar will guide you through the creation of your own personalised ceremony.

Alternatively, if it is more convenient for you we can hold this consultation meeting via phone, post

or email depending on your preferred choice.

Paying for your ceremonyThe cost of your ceremony will depend on your chosen venue. Most licensed venues will set their

own charges and this is a matter between you and the venue. In addition you will need to pay for:

v Notices of your intention to marry, payable to your local or designated registration office.

v Your ceremony fee and marriage certificates payable to Dorset County Council (your ceremony

pack will include information advising you about payment details).

For further information about Dorset County Council ceremony fees please see our website:

Each person who wishes to marry in England

or Wales must attend in person to give notice

of their intention to marry.

If you live in the county of Dorset (excluding

Bournemouth and Poole) and you are either a

British or EEA national you may choose to give

your notice at any Dorset Registration Office.

You can book your appointment by telephoning

01305 225153. However, if your ceremony is

taking place in Dorset but you reside outside the

county, you will be required to give your notices

in the registration district in which you live.

If either or both of you are non-EEA nationals

and subject to immigration control you must

attend together to give notice at a designated

register office in England or Wales. Please

telephone 01305 225153 for advice. The Home

Office immigration service can also offer advice

or there is useful information on their website at:

www.gov.uk/marriages-civil-partnerships/

foreign-national.

Notice can be given up to 12 months prior to

your wedding, so although you may book your

ceremony more than a year ahead, you will be

advised when and where to give notice. Usually

this must be a minimum of 28 clear days before

the ceremony, however the notice period may be

extended to 70 days in certain circumstances,

if either or both of you are subject to Home Office

immigration control.

At your appointment with the Registrar you will

have to provide a number of original documents

(see opposite) and we would therefore advise

that you make arrangements to give your notice

several months before your ceremony to ensure

you have the correct documents for your notice

appointment to proceed. You must have lived in

the area for a minimum of seven clear days before

giving notice.

DORSET WEDDINGS | PAGE 27

Everybody giving notice must provide indisputable

evidence of their name, date of birth and nationality.

You must also provide evidence of the address that

you are residing at. If you are a non-EEA national

you will also have to provide evidence of settled

status. If this is not provided then you and your

partner will automatically be referred to Home Office

immigration and the notice waiting period may be

extended up to 70 clear days.

Proof of identity:If you are a British citizen you will be required

to produce one of the following:v Valid passport. v A British birth certificate plus additional evidence

showing the current use of the name and surname

i.e. valid driving licence, bank or building society

statement dated no more than one month before the

date notice is given, utility bill (gas, water or electricity)

dated no more than three months before the date

notice is given, council tax bill or mortgage statement

dated no more than one year before the date notice

is given, or a current tenancy agreement. If you were

born after 1st January 1983 you will also have to

provide evidence of your parents’ nationality at the

time of your birth.v Certificate of registration or naturalisation as a

British citizen granted by the Secretary of State

with additional evidence showing the current use

of the name and surname as detailed above.

If you are an EEA national you will be required

to produce one of the following:v Valid passport.v Valid national identity card issued by an EEA state

or Switzerland.

If you are a non-EEA national you will be required

to produce one of the following:v Valid Passport.v Valid Biometric Immigration document.v Valid travel document issued by the Home Office. v Evidence of immigration status in the form of Indefinite

Leave to Remain (ILR), Indefinite Leave to Enter (ILE)

or a current EEA family member resident permit with

ILR or ILE.v Passport sized photos of you and your partner.

Proof of address:You must produce one of the following:

v Utility bill (gas, water or electricity) dated no more

than three months before the date notice is given.v Bank or building society statement dated no more

than one month before the date notice is given.v Council tax bill or mortgage statement dated no

more than one year before the date notice is given.v Current residential tenancy agreement.v Valid UK driving licence showing current name and

address given at notice.v Letter signed by the owner or proprietor confirming

that you have resided at the address for at least seven

days immediately prior to giving notice. They must

also confirm that they are the owner or proprietor of

the property and include their own name and address.

Marital status:You will also be asked to confirm your marital status.

If you have been married or have entered into a civil

partnership before, we must see evidence that this

relationship is legally over. This is usually in the form

of a death certificate of your late spouse or partner,

a decree absolute issued by the divorce court, or a

civil partnership final order. If this document is in a

foreign language we will need a certified translation

into English as well as the original document. In some

circumstances the document may need to be referred

to the General Register Office.

Change of name:If you have changed your name you will need to

produce evidence of the change such as a Deed

Poll or Change of Name Deed.

Up to date information can be found at

www.gov.uk/marriages-civil-partnerships/overview

regarding required documents.

Please note all documents must be originals, not

photocopies. If you do not produce the required

documents at your appointment it may result in

the Registrar being unable to take your notice.

Should you require any advice regarding documents

please call 01305 225153.

Documents you need to provide

Notices will be displayed publicly in the Register Office for the statutory 28 clear days, then on the 29th day the

authorities may be issued. If the notice period has been extended to 70 days they will be issued on the 71st day.

An authority will be issued for each party to a marriage and sent to the Registrar conducting your ceremony.

After giving notice of marriage

Page 28: Dorset Weddings 2016 (pdf, 8Mb) (opens in a new window)

What happens on the day?Your Registrar will telephone you approximately one week before your wedding day

to finalise your ceremony. If you want to make any last minute changes that’s fine,

you can discuss these with your Registrar during this phone call.

Cornwell PhotographyOne Thousand Words Photography

We just wanted to say a massive thank you for conducting our ceremony. You made the ceremony

very personal and the time you spent the weekend before on the phone made a massive difference.‘‘ ’’

What time do we arrive? You will plan your arrival time with your venue, but please make sure that you plan for likely traffic

delays, parking arrangements and pre-ceremony photos. It is helpful to provide your guests with

clear instructions and times especially if they are travelling from afar.

Two Registrars will attend your ceremony; one to conduct the ceremony and the other to legally

register your marriage. They will arrive 30 minutes before the ceremony and will check on the

ceremony room, liaise with the venue staff and generally ensure everything is ready for the

ceremony to commence on time.

Before the ceremony startsBefore your ceremony begins the Registrar will need to see you both seperately to confirm

the legal details which will be entered into the marriage register; you do not need to bring any

personal identification documents with you to the ceremony.

Your ceremonyYour Registrar will guide you through the ceremony and it is important to remember that the

words you need to say during the ceremony will be said by the Registrar in clear, short phrases

for you to repeat, so there is no need to be concerened about remembering the words! It is

natural to be a little nervous but there is no need to worry, our Registrars are very experienced

and will make sure that your ceremony is perfect for you.

If you wish to change the name on your passport for use immediately after your wedding or civil

partnership, the Passport Office will either issue a new standard UK passport which will be valid from

the date of the ceremony, or will amend your existing passport to show your future name. Neither of

these will be issued more than three months prior to the ceremony.

Application forms can be obtained from the Post Office or online at www.gov.uk/changing-passport-

information/name-marriage-and-civil-partnership. Once your notices have been given, the forms can

be filled in by the applicant and the Minister

of Religion or Registrar who is to conduct the

ceremony.

The forms should then be sent

to the Passport Office together

with the application for a passport

or amendment to a passport.

If you are going abroad on

honeymoon, remember to book

air tickets etc. in the name you will

have in your passport at the time of

travelling.

Changes to your passport

If the parents of a child born in England or

Wales have entered into a marriage with

each other since the birth, it is a legal

requirement to re-register the child's birth.

If the child was born elsewhere, the parents

should contact the consul for that country

to see if re-registration is required.

A new birth record will be created showing

the child as a child of the parent's marriage,

replacing the original registration and all

future copy birth certificates will be issued

from this new record.

If you have any children between you, please

ask the Registrar for further information.

Q: Can anyone legally marry me?

A: No, religious marriages and civil marriages (in

the presence of a Superintendent Registrar) are the

only legal option in England and Wales. However,

there are many private celebrants who claim to

be able to ‘marry’ couples but in reality they do

not have this authority and couples using a private

celebrant will also need to undertake a civil or

religious ceremony to be legally married.

Q: I want to get married at midnight,

can I do this?

A: Yes this is possible as there are no restrictions

regarding the time that marriages may take place.

Q: I want to get married under an apple

tree in the orchard, can I do this?

A: It is only possible to be legally married in

a ‘room’ at a venue that is licensed to hold

marriages. However, many venues in Dorset

have ‘garden rooms’ such as gazebos and

summerhouses set in beautiful grounds.

These venues provide an ideal opportunity

for couples wanting to hold a legal marriage

ceremony whilst being nearly ’outdoors’.

Take a look at our ‘outdoor ceremonies’ feature

on pages 18 and 19.

Q: I have been told that ceremonies

conducted by Registrars are standard

and cannot be changed, is this right?

A: No absolutely not! We are very keen to

ensure you have your perfect ceremony. At the

ceremony consultation we will advise on the legal

requirements and then help you create your own

personalised ceremony.

Q: I have heard that animals are

not allowed at wedding ceremonies,

is this true?

A: Again this is not true. We have conducted

many ceremonies where dogs have been included,

however, you would need the consent of your

venue and to inform us in advance if you would

like your pet to be part of your ceremony.
