Let’s celebrate our fathersCommentary by Lilia Garcia Jimenez

experiencia.

Jose A. Cabranes co-founded the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund.
He wrote a book on the history of U.S.-Puerto Rican relations and co-authored a book on federal sentencing guidelines. Honored professionally by such august bodies as the U.S. Supreme Court, American Bar Association and Columbia Univer-sity, Cabranes sits on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in New York. He was the first Latino appointed to the federal bench in the continental United States.
Costa Rican-born Franklin Chang-Diaz made history yet again in 2002, when he tied the re-cord for most space flights on his final mission aboard the Endeavor. His maiden voyage in 1986 marked the first space flight by a Hispanic American astronaut. Besides being a shuttle astronaut, Chang-Diaz led the Advanced Space Propulsion Laboratory at the Johnson Space Center in Houston before retiring in 2005 from NASA. Today, he’s president and CEO of Ad Astra Rocket Co., a Texas-headquartered firm that specializes in advanced plasma-powered rockets. He also teaches at Rice University and the University of Houston.
By the time Hector Barreto Sr. helped found the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in 1979, he was a successful businessman. He owned several restaurants in the Kansas City area and a tile distributing company. Just 20 years earlier, he had immigrated from his native Mexico to the United States to seek his fortune. Penniless, Barreto immediately found work on a Missouri farm. He earned 80 cents an hour digging potatoes. From such humble means, he rose to commercial success and international prominence through hard work, entrepreneurial wit and determination.
Cabranes, Chang-Diaz and Barreto have much in common, including a family tradition of proud paternity. All three outstanding Hispanic Ameri-cans had upstanding, hard-working, involved fathers. They, in turn, dedicated themselves to lovingly and responsibly fathering their own offspring.
There’s a timeless lot to be drawn from the inspiring professional narratives of Cabranes, Chang-Diaz and Barreto. Their extraordinary accomplishments – these sons of a teacher and one of Puerto Rico’s first professionally trained social workers, a Costa Rican construction worker and a Mexican livestock dealer – have come to define the highest standards and trendsetting in their respective fields. The value of advances they pioneered in jurisprudence, space exploration and business are immeasurable.
Focusing on their families’ enduring tradition of writing and casting powerful lead roles for fathers complements rather than overshadows Cabranes, Chang-Diaz and Barreto’s remarkable career achievements.
This week, we celebrate and recognize them as role models of adult manhood, not only for their intellectual contributions and leadership, but also for successfully learning how to father from their fathers and passing it on to their combined 13 children.
In honoring their fathers and performing well the essential role of father, Cabranes, Chang-Diaz and Barreto demonstrate how sound, lasting, productive ties of a community are forged and their perpetuity ensured. The importance can’t be overstated.
Happy Father’s Day.
hopelessly out of date. When I was 25 years old:
Dad knows about it, but then he should, because he has been around so long.
When I was 30 years old: Maybe we should ask Dad what he thinks. After all, he’s had a lot of experi-ence.
When I was 35 years old: I’m not doing a single thing until I talk to Dad.
When I was 40 years old: I wonder how Dad would have handled it. He was so wise.
When I was 50 years old: I’d give anything if Dad were here now so I could talk this over with him. Too bad I didn’t appreciate how
smart he was. I could have learned a lot from him.
Keep your dad close and always remember to tell him how much you love him and what he means to you. He’ll always be there to help you, listen to you and love you.
Happy Father’s Day!
cases has heightened awareness and invigorated the search for causes, better diagnosis and effective treatments.
On June 9, the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) launched a study to identify early signs of autism and explore its causes. The NIH and the advocacy group Autism Speaks funded the Early Autism Risk Longitudinal Investigation (EARLI) project at four medical research centers nationwide.
Researchers want to recruit 1,200 pregnant women who already have a child with autism. They will moni-tor the pregnancies and the first three years of each baby’s life, administering periodic developmental assessments.
Researchers from more than a dozen institutions announced on April 28 the results of two studies showing that genetic factors play a strong role in autism. Analyzing DNA from more than 12,000 subjects, they isolated a common gene vari-ant that may account for up to 15 percent of autism cases and linked 133 genes to the disorder.
Autism is most like-ly caused by a genetic predisposition and an environmental “trig-ger,” according to Dr. Jay Gordon, assistant professor of pedi-atrics at the UCLA Medical School.
“Autism is trig-gered by many envi-ronmental, infectious and other causes,” Gordon wrote in an
online article, “Autism and Toxins,” dated Jan. 15. “Vaccines are one of these triggers.”
Scientists are split over a possible causal link between childhood vaccines and autism. The tenfold rise in the incidence of autism, however, mirrors the rise in childhood vaccines. It’s impossible to ignore the 30-40 injections of potentially risky material we give children during their first 24 months of life, Gordon wrote.
Other suspected triggers are Mercury poisoning, diet, the inability to absorb minerals and vitamins and changes in the digestive tract.
Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder, characterized by impaired social interaction and verbal and non-verbal communication, self-abusive behavior, repetitive motions and unusual responses to sensory information. It’s part of a spectrum of developmental disabilities – autism spectrum disor-ders – that encompasses autism, Asperger syndrome, Rett syndrome and childhood disintegrative disorder. Most autistic children exhibit symptoms by the age of 18 months.
There’s no biological test for autism. A healthcare provider experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of autism will perform an autism evaluation that includes a complete physical and neurological examination, genetic and possibly metabolic testing and the use of a special screening tool, such as the Gilliam Autism Rating Scale. Different specialists will each evaluate the child’s motor skills, speech and communication.
Parents who suspect a child is autistic are advised to seek diagnosis and treatment by the time the child is age 2. Findings show that early intervention is the most effective therapy.
Autism is permanent. While interventions relieve specific symptoms, there’s no cure, according to the U.S. National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. But the work of a team of scientists led by William Shaw at the Great Plains Laboratory Inc. in Lenexa, Kan., shows that a complete recovery is possible.
Next week: Traditional autism therapies and a new approach.

The new office will be open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday and Wednesday. Its services will include organizing workshops and assisting clients with developing business plans. In addition, the FastTrac program (Primer Paso in Spanish) will be offered there.
For the HEDC, the new facility means accomplishing one of its goals. “We want to keep offering quality with our services,” Zarate said.
As quoted in an HEDC press release, Donna Lauffer, a county librarian, said: “The Oak Park Neighborhood Library is currently the site where the library is focusing its ability to provide services and collections to the growing Hispanic community, one of vital parts of the Johnson County landscape. This will be a great partnership and provide wonderful service to the Hispanic community.”
for the year on May 15 without approving the bill. Davis, a St. Charles County Republican, plans to refile it in 2010.
“This is a serious problem, and we need to fix it,” she said.
The legislation, which had bipartisan support, would’ve allowed adoptees over age 21 access to their original, unaltered birth certificate, copies of their adoption records, related court records and the identity of the state agency involved in the adoption.
Under current state law, the records are sealed and Missouri alters the birth certificates, replacing the names of the biological parents with those of the adoptive parents. Davis called it appalling that the state falsifies official documents.
“If people want to keep secrets from family members, that’s their choice, but the government shouldn’t be a party to it,” she said.
Davis’ proposed law would give adoptees access to their biological parents’ medical history. That’s what motivated a local woman’s campaign to change Missouri adoption laws. After the birth of her second child, Rosa and her husband Don (not their real names) set out to learn the medical history of Don’s birth family. Don was adopted in Missouri.
“We requested it for our children’s sake,” Rosa explained.
Born and raised in Mexico by her birth parents, Rosa readily furnished her children’s pediatrician with her family’s medical history, but Don’s side was a blank page. They wondered about genetic conditions that could affect their children.
After months of research and filing forms, they obtained non-identifying information through the court. It revealed that there was a disorder in Don’s biological family. Rosa and Don alerted the pediatrician and discussed appropriate diagnostic testing.
Access to medical history is crucial for informing adoptees whether they and their biological children are at risk for hereditary diseases, disorders or illnesses.
“It’s time to give people access to information that would help them make better healthcare decisions,” Davis said. “Adoptees research family history for health just like everyone else.”
There’s another argument for unsealing adoption records: Adoptees in the dark about their biological family could unknowingly marry a blood relative. A well-publicized case occurred in Britain. In 2008, a married couple discovered that they were twins adopted at birth to different families.
The couple hadn’t yet had children when they learned of their biological relationship. Their mar-riage was annulled.
Those for and against House Bill No. 48 testified in March before the House Children and Families Committee that Davis chairs.
Opponents argue that open access violates the pri-vacy of birth mothers, would increase the abortion rate and holds the threat of grown children tracking them down and initiating unwanted contact.
Kansas and Alaska, which have never sealed birth records, are among eight states that give adult adoptees access to their birth records. Maine opened adoption records this year. Seven more states have considered unsealing birth certificates.
Supporters say part of their campaign is raising public awareness.
“Most people aren’t familiar with this,” Davis said. “Unless they’re adopted or know someone who’s adopted, they’re not even aware there’s a problem.”

If you are undocumented, have been here for more than a year and decide to go out of the
United States for any reason, returning illegally may make it impossible to ever become legal.
Immigration laws sometimes create harsh con-sequences, even when they’re triggered innocently. It’s common for individuals to find that they’re subject to penalties, even though they’ve not been convicted of any crimes.
These consequences can result from many unex-pected ways. Individuals sometimes go to the U.S.-
Mexican border, claim to be a U.S. citizen and try to enter the United States. They may use false papers or simply make a statement. These efforts can cause problems for the person if they later try and le-galize their status. Falsely claiming to be a U.S. citizen, under any circum-stances, can result in a permanent banishment from the United States, whether for work or for any other reason.
Even individu-als who try to fol-low the rules may find themselves the victim of un-intended conse-quences. When people go to the U.S. Embassy in Juarez for the fi-nal processing of their visas, they’re required to sub-mit to a medical
review. Often, in an effort to “do the right thing,” they disclose irrelevant and stale information. For example, they will confess to a single use of marijuana years earlier. Although this isolated act isn’t an impediment under the law, there have been situations where the embassy has bared them for a period of time and forced them to prove that they aren’t addicts.
Never lie to the government. The government has many ways to determine whether a person is lying. The consequences of lying can be greater than those of telling the truth. However, given the state of the law, it’s prudent to seek competent legal advice before proceeding with an application.
Immigration law is full of hidden landmines. Indi-viduals should always be careful to seek competent legal advice. Moreover, they must be fully open and honest with their attorney, so that the lawyer can best advise them about any unforeseen issues.
Many wait years to obtain legal residency. When the time finally comes for legalization to occur, it shouldn’t be thwarted by an unintended and un-anticipated life-changing consequence.

Reforma migratoria: el proyecto 279By Jorge Ramosc.2009 Jorge Ramos (Distributed by The New York Times Syndicate.)
Immigration reform: Project 279
It looks like there are still signs of life in immigra-tion reform.
More than 700 congressmen and leaders of civil organizations, churches, unions and business met recently in Washington to launch a national campaign to legalize millions of undocumented immigrants. On Wednesday (June 17), President Obama met at the White House with a small group of Republicans and Democrats to plan the steps needed to achieve immigration reform this year.
If there’s no immigration reform this year – as Obama promised in his campaign – it’ll be almost im-
possible next year. In the 2010 congressional elections, politicians will be more interested in their re-election campaigns than in the undocumented immigrants (who don’t vote). By 2011, it will be impossible; Obama’s popularity will have declined and his political capital almost spent (it has happened to nearly every president, including Ronald Reagan). In 2012, we’ll be in the middle of a presidential campaign, which will grab the agenda for that year.
So the year for immigration reform is 2009 – or at a stretch, the beginning of 2010. But a long delay would bring on almost sure death. It also would mean that the immigration problem would grow, along with the number of undocumented migrants.
Three conditions are in play this year, a scenario that hasn’t been the case for years and might not occur again: one, a popular president; two, a political party (Democratic) that controls Congress and the White House; and three, a president who promised to secure immigration reform in his first year of government.
It’s the “perfect storm.”One of the best arguments for legalizing most of
the 12 million undocumented immigrants residing in the United States is that there’s no alternative. In other words, I cannot imagine videos on television and on the Internet showing federal agents and police officers arresting, handcuffing and deporting millions of undocumented children, women and workers and transporting them by bus or airplane to their coun-tries of origin.
The United States is a nation that wouldn’t dare commit such an outrage. So the only option left is to fix what’s not working. And the U.S. immigration system doesn’t work.
The United States doesn’t control its borders or deal compassionately with migrants. Police raids and the subsequent separation of families are no way to solve a problem with roots in the huge salary differences between the United States and Latin America.
To change things, all that’s needed is the support of 279 people. Let’s call it Project 279. The votes of 218 lawmakers in the House of Representatives, of 60 in the Senate and Obama’s signature are all that’s needed to pass immigration reform. Up to now, the only sure thing is the presidential seal.
Democratic Rep. Nydia Velazquez of New York told me recently she thought they could count on 210 votes in the House of Representatives. Some Democrats refuse to vote for immigration reform and there are some Republicans who are undecided. Just eight more votes are needed.
Things are complicated in the Senate, too. Ken Salazar, the ex-senator for Colorado and now the Secretary of the Interior, reminded me that the last battle for immigration reform was lost in the Senate in mid-2007.
That could happen again.Although there are 59 Democrats in the Senate, not
all of them would support a legalization of undocu-mented immigrants. So the help of Republican Sen. John McCain of Ariz. is urgently needed – and of other Republicans interested in changing the system (and, at the same time, harvesting the votes of an increasing Hispanic electorate). Without the Republicans, there will be no reform.
Salazar believes that the debate in Congress might come up late in the year. He assured me that, based on his conversations with Obama, the president is committed to keeping his promise. But Democratic Rep. Luis Gutierrez of Illinois – who has completed a nationwide tour to promote support for immigration reform – told me that could be too late and that he would like to see the debate begin by summer’s end at the latest.
Ultimately, getting the support of 279 people is all that’s needed. But there are times when the simplest thing is the hardest thing to achieve.

In 2006, Patrick Danley founded a non-profit organization out of the trunk of his car.
It has expanded beyond that.Danley is the CEO of Beyond the Conviction,
an organization in Kansas City, Mo., that helps brighten people’s lives through helping ex-convicts and those in need of work. Now based in the Historic Lincoln Building, Beyond the Conviction provides social services and career development services, including mentorship, advocacy, counseling, trans-portation, haircuts and professional clothing for those who don’t have it.
“I just think that we are making a difference be-cause we are providing job development and social services at the same time,” Danley said.
Beyond the Conviction’s services are free to those who meet certain requirements. If the requirements aren’t met, the organization’s fees range from $25 to $100.
“We think in (terms of) providing services to people that need them, and we do really help them,” Danley said.
Originally, Danley started with the purpose of helping ex-convicts find work and create better futures for themselves.
“I realized that I had an education,” Danley said. “I had a bachelor’s (degree) and a master’s (degree), and it was really hard to get a job because I was a felon. So imagine how hard (it) would be for someone who doesn’t have an education.”
Danley expanded Beyond the Conviction’s ser-vices because he saw people each day who were struggling to find work. Now, his organization works

with individuals who face such job-related obstacles as limited work experience, lack of education, HIV issues and poverty.
“I thought people felt limited because they were not able to find a job,” he said.
Since Beyond the Conviction began, Danley believes it has offered a safe environment in the community for keeping people employed and in-creasing the num-ber of taxpayers who contribute to the community. To Danley, the organi-zation has created hope among people who’ve lost it.
“If you help a person to find a job, you have helped a household to survive,” Danley
said.“I want to encourage our Latino population (to
contact us),” he said. “We are able to help them either to get an education or a job. Don’t be afraid and come and talk to us.”

with scholarships to help them continue with their college studies.
The reception took place in the Muehlebach Tower of Marriott Downtown Hotel in Kansas City, Mo. More than 300 people gathered to celebrate the students’ accomplishments.
The scholarships, which var-ied in amount per student, to-taled $232,000. Several colleges and universities also matched the help provided by the fund.
In addition, as a surprise, the students received a $200 debit card to use for books and school expenses.
For the first time eighteen family scholarships of $2,500 each were awarded to mark the HSF’s 25th anniversary. The families that donated them included: Chaurand-Bermudez, Colorado, Duran, Fierro, Mel-goza, Mora, Murguia, Ramirez, Reyes Riojas, Ruiz, Salazar, Valdez, Vazquez-Rangel and Zamora

Janet Murguia, National Council La Raza president and CEO, encouraged the students to keep progress-ing with their schooling by sharing her experience of being a Hispanic who worked with former Presi-dent Clinton.
“So here I am in the helicopter Marine 1, with President Clinton in New York, flying face to face to the Statue of Liberty and I grew up in the Argentine neighborhood,” she said. “If I did it, you can do it, too.”
Murguia also explained the importance of continu-ing to fund scholarship opportunities to open doors for Hispanic students.
Carlos Dominguez, a senior in business administra-tion and CIS at Park University in Parkville, Mo., said scholarship opportunities are important to area Hispanics. For him, receiv-ing the scholarship was a blessing – and it’s something that will help him with his education and prog-ress in his career.
“This scholarship means a bet-ter future for Hispanic students and a commitment to serve the Hispanic community,” Domin-guez said.

Every year in New York City, the Spanish-
language newspaper La Prensa honors 25 success-ful Latinas who’ve made a difference in business, government and entertainment. This year, I was honored to be included among them.
Sonia Sotomayor, President Obama’s choice as the first Hispanic judge on the U.S. Supreme Court, also was among the honorees.
During the event, I observed this distinguished judge’s incisiveness and humility. When she took her place at the podium, she didn’t turn her acceptance speech into a political campaign or use it to crow about her accom-plishments. Instead, she shared a precious childhood memory with the audience. She told us about how her mother, grandmother and aunt would gather every Saturday morn-ing in the kitchen to make sofrito (a condi-ment used in Puerto Rican cooking).
“Between cups of coffee and toast, we passed the mornings with a happiness that filled up my heart,” she recalled.
With that story, Sotomayor reminded us that she wasn’t any different from anybody else and we could all accomplish whatever we put our minds to.
Sotomayor personifies a woman with no limits. When it came to reaching the bench of the highest court, she had more working against her than for her. She grew up in public housing projects. She was discriminated against because of her ethnicity and her family’s modest means. She faced the challenges implicit in trying to succeed in a male-dominated field. Her passion, dedication and determination helped her to overcome her obstacles.
I am honored to have met her, and I identify with her strongly. Aside from receiving the same award and both being Puerto Rican, I found that I have other things in common with the honorable judge, especially life-changing events that marked our re-spective childhoods. At the tender age of 9, we both lost a parent. For her, it was her father. I lost my mother. As children, we were diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, meaning we would have to depend on daily insulin injections the rest of our lives.
Ever since her nomination was announced, Lati-nos have celebrated. Having the first-ever Hispanic Supreme Court judge is a source of pride. For me, my admiration for her transcends nationality and gender. I admire her because of her strong family values and her great heart, which undoubtedly has had as strong an impact on her success as her education has.
We all can learn from Sotomayor that no matter our race, gender, or socio-economic status, there’s no limit to how high we can go!

AventuraPresenta “The Last”

Screened: May 20, AMC Town Center 20, Leawood, Kan. (preview screen-
ing).Describe it: A mix of the short 1956 French film “Le ballon rogue” (“The Red Balloon”),
“Cocoon” and the Indiana Jones movies – served up in better-than-average
computer animation – that works most of the time. Carl Fred-ricksen (voice of Ed Asner), an elderly widower who’s about to be committed to a nursing home and longs for the adventures he dreamed of when he was younger, escapes the orderlies who’ve come for him by tying
a bunch of helium balloons to his house and floating off to Paradise
Falls in South America. He soon discovers a stowaway in his flying
house: Russell, a talkative youngster who’s in the Wilderness Explorers. The movie works best when it explores
the developing relationship between Carl and Russell. Early on, there are some
devilishly comic touches that adults with talkative youngsters will appreciate, such
as Carl turning down his hearing aid to tune out Russell and Carl’s suggestion that they play
a game he calls “Let’s see who can be quiet the longest.” After the house lands, “Up” loses its way for a while in a strange subplot involving an old aviator/mad inventor (voice of Christopher Plummer) who has invented
a voice box that allows dogs to express their thoughts. Fortunately, it returns to the Carl-Russell friendship for a graceful, honest, tender finale.
Should I see it?: “Up’s” mix of gentle and wicked humor and its genuinely sweet moments make it worth a matinee screening.
Screened: June 9, AMC Studio 30, Olathe, Kan. (preview screen-ing).
Describe it: A mix of “Stranger Than Fiction” and “Liar Liar” that al-most works. It has a promising story: Evan (Ed- d i e Murphy), an uptight divorced stock broker, gets accurate stock tips through his daughter Olivia’s conversations with friends from her fantasy world and strengthens his re-lationship with Olivia (Yara Shahidi) as they explore that world.
Murphy and Shahidi have a breezy, be-lievable father-daughter chemistry. On
the other hand, the relationship between
superstition and the stock market has the potential for wonderful sat-ire, but the movie fails to explore its obvious comedic possibilities (I’m speaking as a superstitious inves-tor myself here). It never finds the right balance as a family film either. The material is geared largely to-ward adults. The many scenes involving business transac-tions will have youngsters confused and pestering their parents/guard-ians with questions afterward. There should be more sloppy, kids-be-ing -k ids mo -ments, such as the amusing scene where Murphy and Shah id i make pancakes together and she drenches them in everything but maple syrup.
Should I see it?: Only if your 8-year-old has just been accepted into the Harvard Busi-ness School and will enthusiastically watch scene after scene of grown-up business meetings.

Movie: “Up” (rated PG).Exhibida: Mayo 20, AMC Town
Center 20, Leawood, Kan.
Exhibida: Junio 9, AMC Studio 30, Olathe, Kan.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a su-doku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, col-umn and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
On Sunday (June 14), Royals designated hit-ter and infielder Mike Jacobs got the chance
to break up a double play – and his ability to take advantage of it helped give the Royals the necessary momentum to cruise past the Cincinnati Reds 7-1 at Kauffman Stadium.
With the score 1-1, one out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the third inning, Royals catcher Miguel Olivo hit a ground ball to Reds shortstop Alex Gonzalez, who threw to second base-man Brandon Phillips for the force out. However, Jacobs slid hard into second and disrupted Phillips long enough that Olivo beat Phillips’ throw to first, allowing David DeJesus to score from third by preventing an inning-ending double play.
“He hit the ball semi-hard,” Jacobs recalled. “It basically just gave me a chance to get down there and get in his (Phillips’) face a little bit. (I) tried to slide as late as I could.”
Jacobs called the play “one of those things that doesn’t show up in the box score that helped us ... win today.” Indeed, the Roy-als added three more runs that inning en route to the interleague victory, which
gave them their third series sweep and their first three-game series sweep this season. The Royals, who swept their two-game series with the Chicago White Sox and Seattle Mariners in May, defeated the Reds 4-1 June 12 and 7-4 June 13.
Royals manager Trey Hillman praised the Royals’ baserunning during the series. He was especially
pleased with the way runners broke up double plays – and even praised the Reds’ aggres-sive baserunning – calling it “good, hard baseball.”
Royals outfielder Willie Bloomquist, who scored two runs Sunday, said the Royals have run the bases aggressively all season.
“This past week or so, we’ve been … doing a good job of extending innings by breaking up double plays and … (with) good baserunning,” he said.
Royals Notes:*At press time Wednesday (June 17), the Royals were con-tinuing their three-game home series with the Diamondbacks. They won their series opener 5-0 Tuesday (June 16).
*This weekend (June 19-21), the Royals will host the
St. Louis Cardinals, whose roster includes former Kansas City area
high school and junior college standout Albert Pujols.

L I G A D E CAMPEONES
