European Charter for Sustainable Tourism
The Garajonay National Park is a signatory of the
European Charter for Sustainable Tourism in Protected
Areas. It has committed itself to a form of tourism that
contributes more to the protection and development
of natural and cultural heritage. It also ensures that the
visitor is treated with respect and that local tourism
professionals are socially and economically fulfilled.
The Charter approach ensures that organization, local
people and 24 local tourism businesses work together
to protect the area, while at the same time increasing
opportunities for visitors to discover and enjoy its
special qualities.
The Charter was drawn up under the leadership of the
EUROPARC Federation.
It promotes implementation of the concept of
sustainable development, i.e. "development that meets
the needs of present generations, without
compromising the capacity of future generations to
meet their needs".
This form of development involves the preservation of
resources for future generations, viable economic
development and equitable social development.

development of the area’s sustainable tourism strategy.
In the Charter Network, 24 local tourism businesses have so far distinguished
themselves by working towards environmental management within their businesses
and developing activities which promote and respect our island.
The following businesses have been successfully certified as European Charter
Partner Businesses by the Garajonay National Park.
Signing the charter on sustainable tourism has given these businesses the right to
use the European Charter logo.

Originally this was one traditional Canarian-style house, but it
was big enough to be divided into three when it was renovated.
The entrance to each of the three resulting houses is from a
typical courtyard, partly covered in stone and tiles. The
conservation of old larders, window-seats and agricultural and
kitchen utensils used in the decoration make the atmosphere
inside very agreeable. The large Canarian “patio” (courtyard)
which is in the centre of the almost square building provides an
independent space with views of the village, which is made up of
small traditional-style houses.

details from former times, like the original stone benches
found in the old house and now used to decorate the
