1 Introduction

GemControl is a Control and Monitoring device dedicated to AIS/GIS switchgear. It comprises several parts mounted directly to DIN rail inside the low voltage cabinet. The Front Panel is not mounted inside the switchgear but directly fixed on the door.

2 Presentation

GemControl is divided into several parts with separate dedicated analog and numeric I/O modules. It is also possible to communicate to SCADA or to IED using several standard protocols.

In the following pictures, we can see Body Unit (BU-1020 the main processor) connected to Extension board (DX-4444 additional I/O) and linked to Front Panel(FP-1000).

BU description :

b. X = ‘2’ -> with communication card

c. Y = ‘1’ -> low voltage power supply

d. Y = ‘2’ -> high voltage power supply

This is the main part of GemControl It is generally called (BU).

There are 4 different versions depending on voltage supply and additional communications links as options.

The BU comprises the Main Board, Power Supply Unit and I/O. It is possible to add 1 additional communications board (1 Serial link and 1 Ethernet link).

2.1.1 Power Supply

Class I.

Neutral System: TT

GemControl is available in 2 different power supply options:

High Voltage: 110 - 230 V ~ -> 50Hz/60Hz - 250mA

110 - 300 V ----- -> 250mA

Low Voltage: 24 - 48 V ----- -> 250mA

On the Power Supply connector (X01), a label defines the correct way to plug the power supply. For the low voltage version, it is not possible to damage the electronic board in the case of mismatched connection; the inputs are also protected against incorrect connection.

A battery may be added in order to save hours and dates when power supply is not available. It is not possible however to use this battery to operate. Full battery control during operation verifies the correct voltage of the battery. The reference of the battery if Lithium 3.6V AA format

3 Installation

3.1 Safety notice

Safety procedure:

Only authorized personnel should be allowed to install devices

3.1.1 Fire Protection

The low voltage cabinet needs to ensure protection against fire and electrical damage

3.1.2 Electrical safety

GemControl need to be connected directly to the auxiliary power supply circuit. Use of external plugs is not allowed.

Power Supply circuit must be protected by a Fuse or MCB rated at 10 to 16 A. This fuse secures several different circuits.

Power Supply cable must have double insulation, 1 for each conductor (earth/N/P or earth/+/-) and a second overall insulating sheath to protect the first one.

Before any intervention to GemControl, please ensure the power supply if off and all input and output modules are unplugged.

3.1.3 Battery

Pile LS14250 de SAFT au Li-SOCI2.

Only authorized personnel should replace the battery, never the user.

Safety Conditions:

- Always use the same model of battery.

- Risk of explosion in case of incorrect model.

- Respect country recommendations when throwing battery.

- keep the battery away from fire or water

- Never try to recharge the battery.

- Do not short circuit battery.

- Do not burn battery.

The Front Panel is fixed to the door by using screws (see photos). Cut out dimensions:

3.3 Earth connections

Each module (Body Unit- Extension board- Front Panel) must be earthed directly (not by DIN rail connection). Screws must be metallic and with a diameter of more than 4 mm. Cable must be green/yellow with a cross section of more than 2.5 mm2

If the door is painted, an additional earth connection must be made between Front Panel and the switchgear.

This symbol means this is an earthing point.
