On Sunday night, jazz-funk band Jamiroquaistopped off on the White Isle as part of their

erofeB.ruothtommamtheir performance at Ibiza super-club,Privilege, the band had already been on theroad since early March, playing forty-threegigs across the planet, inside some of theworlds largest and most celebrated concertvenues. But regardless of his hectic touringschedule, Jamiroquai lead singer Jay Kayappeared unreasonably fresh and flexiblethroughout the entirety of his ninety minuteperformance, sliding around the stage like anageless bead of liquid funk.

The band took to the stage at around 3am,appearing alongside a near orchestra ofsaxophonists, flute players, drummers, and aharmonious posse of backing singers. Kaywore his trademark feathered buffaloheaddress and a black Adidas track top, andinstantly riled the crowd into a giddy hipshaking frenzy. “Rock Dust Light Star” wasthe first track of the night, smartly followed bya superbly crafted rendition of “Cosmic Girl”,with a romantic version of “Little L” served upas an early sweetener.After taking a five year hiatus between

studio albums, Jamiroquai's latest long playercame along at just the right time… because thekids were beginning to forget all about Jay Kayand his cool jazz-funk grooves. Of course, themusic scene has changed significantly sinceJamiroquai gained mainstream recognitionback in the mid-1990s - these days, the sceneis louder, less lyrically introspective, andcrowded with watered-down electronica ofevery variety - but nevertheless, the exactpitch of the competition shouldn't be too muchof a concern to Jamiroquai, after all, just like inthe mid-1990s, none of today's mainstreamartists are making bubblegum flavoured acidjazz.Evidently, Jamiroquai have helped to shape

the contours of an entire genre;; they areunique. Their first three studio albums werefunky and distinctive, whilst their next twoofferings, and ,had a rather more poptastic quality. Their lasttwo albums, and

, were used to showcase a bigger, morematured sound, and as a consequence, mostof their recent work is laced with liveinstrumentation acoustic guitars and plenty

of romping string sections to augment thecustomary vocal vocoders and warping synthshowever, quintessentially, the Jamiroquai

sound hasn't altered much over the course ofthe last twenty years.Jay Kay, too, remains one of the best front-

men in the business. He still sounds a little likeStevie Wonder, and he still moves a little likeMichael Jackson, and for this reason, perhaps,it's no surprise that Jamiroquai are still able tofill gargantuan venues like San Rafael super-club, Privilege.

Wednesday night is show night at the IbizaRocks Hotel, and in recent weeks the courtyardhas been busier than ever. Last week, Londonborn rapper Elliot Gleave, better known by hisstage name, Example, continued the hectictrend, catching the fancy of a huge and mostlyEnglish crowd.

Right now, Example is one of the biggestcrowd pullers working within the UK musicindustry. His latest tune, “Changed The WayYou Kissed Me”, sold over 120,000 copies in itsfirst five sales days and remained on the top ofthe charts for two consecutive weeks, while hisnew album, “Playing in the Shadows”, iscertain to top the album charts when it isreleased later this September.Above all else, Example is a talented lyricist

- not, perhaps, in a classically poetic sense -but, clearly, he understands the wants andwhims of the contemporarymusicmarketplaceand is able to hone his verbal venturesaccordingly.

Indeed, if you could have stolen any onechorus line this year, most thinking, profitconscious men would have chosen to filch thelyrics from Example's hit record “Changed TheWay You Kissed Me”, chiefly because the wordsand the trance tinted tune are incrediblycatchy, instantly recognisable, and mostimportantly of all, they carry a sharp, emotivehook that seems to fasten itself to the verycore of the listener.

Gleave likes to perform his urban libretto toan electrified backdrop of tough beats andeasily accessible bass-lines, creating a neat,modern, radio friendly product - a creation soapparently simple that you have to stand backand applaud the structured complexity of it all.There's no doubt that Example is a man on

each of his three studio albums has been a vastimprovement on the last, and these days, heheadlines at venues like Ibiza Rocks ratherthan playing the warm-up sets. Whether ornot he'll be able to carry on conjuring suchcommercially lucrative chorus lines is anyone'sguess, but on Wednesday night, for ninetyminutes, he held sway over the biggest andloudest audience to fill the Ibiza Rockscourtyard since Fatboy Slim shook the venueback to its foundations in late June, andconsidering the acts that have wowed theHotel this year, that alone is quite the boast.

Laura Fowles, otherwise known as Hed Kandisaxophonist Lovely Laura, is dance music'smost popular and attractive multi-instrumentalist. She has played to hugeaudiences in some of the world's mostillustrious concert halls, added a jazzy tint to aplethora of disco and house tracks, ands u pp o r t e d nume r o u s ma i n s t r e amentertainment stage acts, including Take That,Sophie Ellis-Bextor, The Stylistics, and CandyDulfer. Last week, Laura took time out of herbusy schedule to speak to SunDance about hermusical career and life as Ibiza's number onesister of themoon.

Yes I can. It was by chance, at theManumission millennium party in 2000. I wasinvited to come and play by a percussionistfriend of mine called Pav who kept telling mehow amazing it was out here and how amazingthe parties were. It was only when I stepped uponto the podium for the gig I realised that thisplace was on another level;; the party, thecrowds, the music, everything. I was blownaway and knew I would return someday.

Actually for the entire year! Bothmy fiancé andI fell in love with Ibiza so much that we decidedto set up home here. I love the winters here,although I do return to England to visit familyand also for any international gigs, recordingprojects etc.

This is a bit of a long story! When I wasstudying for a Jazz degree at Leeds College ofMusic I was introduced to a DJ through a fellowsax player who had a weekly residency playingsoulful house and chilled grooves in a bar in thecity centre. To cut a long story short, I endedup playing the gig and that's where my love forjamming and improvising with DJs was born.The night was a success and from there I gotasked to play in other bars and clubs,eventually leading me to a club in Barnsleycalled Lucorum where Hed Kandi had amonthly residency. I ended up playing with thebrands founder Mark Doyle one night, whoended up on his knees beggingme to come andjoin them! Needless to say I didn't refuse!!!
