01 WORK’S PHILOSOPHY

¨If one does not know to which port is sailing, no

wind is favorable"

01- I’ll try to make a summary of my career, and alsoan explanation of my work methodology, because Iknow that it’s a little complicated to understand at

JOAQUIN GALAN ARCHITECTS

know that it’s a little complicated to understand atfirst how it can fit three professional disciplines, apparently very different to each other, but, at thesame time, complementary.

02 - In healthcare architecture, it´s very important toknow the order of priority of each field of Knowledge.I have got to learn throughout my career how to turnmedical problems into technical solutions.

03 - A hospital is the building that is more complexfunctionally, and, at the same time, the best preparedtechnologically. Therefore, the more complex the

1/20

technologically. Therefore, the more complex thebuilding is, the clearer the design should be. That'swhy minimalist architecture fits in healthcareprojects.

04 - In this way you can use the best and moreexpensive materials because you will need toincorporate fewer different items, to be able to leavethe most of the budget in the facilities, and very oftento make structural reinforcements when it should benecessary.

Page 3: Dossier (summarized) joaquin galan architect

01 WORK’S PHILOSOPHY

A - Medicine- At the first time, It should know theproject schedule, that includes the medical priorityand the correct healthcare Equipment to convert theold unit area ( I don´t mind which the specialties are)in the most modern and best functional new floorafter remodelling that I could make with the budget .And making all the planning of works, to avoidinterferences with other Hospital floors. The worksshould be efficient, fast, cleaner, and isolated from

JOAQUIN GALAN ARCHITECTS

should be efficient, fast, cleaner, and isolated fromthe rest of the building, the development of worksshould look like it doesn´t exit.

B - Architecture - The architect has to get at leasttwo achievements. The first, design the correctproject, be able to solve all the functional andtechnical requirements of the doctors, and make thecorrect implementation of new medical equipmentfaster; also, it should be very easy to maintain by theown electromedical equipment of hospital , and theengineering of healthcare multinational equipment.

2/20

The main objective, it´s dedicated to patients, therefore I should give them more comfort aboutcolours, light, ventilation, etc. Thanks to myknowledge and experience, I find the best design sothat patients could forget they are in a Hospital. Forthe simple reason that we are aware that the user ofa hospital is the only person who is in a buildingwithout having elected it, the medical rooms shouldlook like hotel rooms as much as possible, althoughthey have many more facilities.

Page 4: Dossier (summarized) joaquin galan architect

01 WORK’S PHILOSOPHY

At the same time, I make theproject in such a way that myengineer collaborators couldprovide the calculation of all thefacilities or even the structuralreinforcement.

C - Engineering-

Finally I should coordinate all

JOAQUIN GALAN ARCHITECTS

Finally I should coordinate allthe team , architects, engineersand others. If you know the workof engineers, they are usuallyprofessional, very specialized andefficient , and your own projectdepends on them, but it is alwaysnecessary to understand all thespecialties well enough to makethe managements of works, because in this way you canimprove your calculations, andyou will be more independent to

3/20

you will be more independent tomake changes very fast if youthink they are essential for thecorrect work developments, because, the experience tells mewhen the works starts, therealways appear new things thatweren’t included in the project. And I should resolve it, to be ableto fulfil both the deadline andbudget in time.

01 WORK’S PHILOSOPHY (NEWS)

My works has been published in numerousmagazines especialized in architecture in Europe,Asia, USA and South America, even one building ofthem was selected as an example to teach a masteron BIM Healtcare architecture from the High ofArchitecture of Barcelona (Spain).

02 EFFICIENCY ENERGY & SUSTAINABILITYEFFICIENCY ENERGY & SUSTAINABILITY

MAIN SYSTEMS OF EFFICIENCY ENERGY IN HEALTHCARE

1-BIOCLIMAIC_DESIGN.

A bioclimatic building reduces the need for heating andcooling since it is designed so that it obtains the highestand best performance of its location, the climate in whichit is located and its orientation. As a result, energyconsumption of the building is reduced. Bioclimaticconsumption of the building is reduced. Bioclimaticstrategies can be combined with the use of renewableenergy sources.

2-COGENERATION.

In case of hospitals, the cogeneration is considered as oneof the leading technologies to get savings in energyconsumption. Understood as the simultaneous productionof heat and electricity through the use of natural gas thatconverts water into vapour, and in turn it drives a turbineof power generation. Cogeneration is fulfilling its role inmany hospitals in Europe, especially in France, UK,

5/20

many hospitals in Europe, especially in France, UK,Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Portugal and Italy, which getsavings of up to 50 percent of electric power.

3-GEOTHERMAL_ENERGY.

If obtaining geothermal energy is added to it, obtainedfrom the heat generated in the centre of our Earth, thisallows developing and at the same time complementingother systems that use renewable energies, able to supplya large part of the building, which we can generate almostself-sufficient buildings from the energy point of view.

Page 7: Dossier (summarized) joaquin galan architect

02 EFFICIENCY ENERGY & SUSTAINABILITY EFFICIENCY ENERGY & SUSTAINABILITY

4-GREEN ROOFS.

Finally we might add the use of natural orsynthetic green roofs. In addition to providingan additional living space, the green roof hasmany other environmental and economicbenefits, such as prolonging the life of thecover, reducing noise and pollution, waterretention, energy saving or improving climateretention, energy saving or improving climateand the urban landscape.

5-DOMOTICS.

The use of different designs in facilities, complemented with low energy lighting, proper design of the domotic system, that arecoordinated by sensors and automationcontrol systems in certain facilities providescomfort and energy savings.

6-SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS.

In addition, and if this were not enough, the

6/20

In addition, and if this were not enough, thenegative effects are reduced that constructionhas on the environment, with materialsinvolving energy savings, which have a long-term duration and requiring very littlemaintenance, so that is a considerable savingin time, for example, the use of fireproof vinylrooms and corridors and patients rooms, suspended ceilings in corridors for themaintenance of the facilities, are beingstandardized both in materials and measures.

03 HEALTHCARE REMODELLING

0- PROLOGUE- In both Europe andAmerica, cities are getting bigger, and the people tend to age at a ratein the coming years, therefore thenew hospitals must be built on theoutskirts , which in terms ofemergency services to citizens andnot properly fulfil correctly yournot properly fulfil correctly yourfunction. At the same time, asmedicine improves very quickly, thebuildings should be prepared to beremodelled and enlarged in anorderly way. So it is necessary andprofitable to update the oldhospitals in the downtown.

1- SUMMARY OF REMODELATION .-

I want to summarise my experienceof remodelling hospitals. It’s

7/20

of remodelling hospitals. It’scomplex but very profitable, both forusers and economic terms. The mainadvantages are its central placewithin the cities and the existingtransport infrastructure. If thehospital must keep its normalfunction all the time, how can wereduce and avoid the impact ofworks on the own building anddowntown.

Page 9: Dossier (summarized) joaquin galan architect

03 HEALTHCARE REMODELLING

-SUMMARY OF REMODELATION

-A correct plan of phases order isnecessary, including the programand hospital priorities.

-Firstly, it needs designing differentaccess to hospital for users andworks staff.works staff.

-A free multifunctional floor isdesigned to be used in all phases.

-Each phase should be completedquickly before beginning the nextone.

-The works developed by phasesmust be clean, dustless andcompletely isolated from the rest ofthe building.

8/20

the building.

-The work materials needn’t bestored as they are used just whenthey arrive at the work, the samehappens with the facilities.

-The inconvenience is that in eachphase one medical area is movedwith sufficient capacity to fullservices.

Page 10: Dossier (summarized) joaquin galan architect

03 HEALTHCARE REMODELLING

SUMMARY OF REMODELATION

-The hospitalised patients andother users are not aware that thebuilding is under remodelling.

-The construction area will be freeof dust and noise, never interferingof dust and noise, never interferingwith the correct function of thehospital.

-Each phase is developed in a fewmonths, and patients start usingthe new floor the day after theworks end.

-The waiting areas must be able tobe enlarged and separated indifferent medical specialties.

9/20

- The last area to remodel shouldbe the administration andmanagement offices.

03 HEALTHCARE REMODELLING

REMODELING AND MASTER PLANS

In this case it is remodeling ahospital or a hospital complex. Theprocedure requires a master plansetting functional and economicalpriorities and being flexible inrelation to that master plan. Forthat, a series of deadlines, budgetsthat, a series of deadlines, budgetsand priorities of actions are set upand, obviously, a number of areasare selected as a flexible elementthat allows the removal of each ofthe functional activities so that thework never paralyses the hospitalactivity.

PARTIAL REMODELING

A number of areas for action areestablished by parts of the directivearea both of general services and

10/20

area both of general services anddoctors, from which the duration ofthe works, its phases as well as itsfull costs are programmed. Thisaction implies a great coordinationbetween the consulting businessand the hospital management, especially due to dividing works inphases, preventing that way thesubsequent closure of the service.

Page 12: Dossier (summarized) joaquin galan architect

03 HELTHCARE REMODELLING

It’s cheaper to improve the energyefficiency by changing facilities, material, etc. However, newhospitals usually have large glasssurfaces, which is more expensive.“The hospital should look like a hotelas much as possible.”

IMPROVEMENT IN SUSTAINABILITYIMPROVEMENT IN SUSTAINABILITY

& ENERGY EFFICIENCY.

- When a building is remodelled, there is no choice but to change 3things at least: facilities, materialsand facade.

The change of all the general andpartial facilities incorporatinglighting of low consumption, newequipment, medical air, amongothers must be replaced, and saving

11/20

others must be replaced, and savingin energy expenditure may beapplied cogeneration, and the airconditioning installations areoptimized at all. Choosing materialsof both low-maintenance and highdurability will be incorporated. Onlywith cogeneration at less 50 percentof electricity could be saved. Thenew materials could be the same asthe last most innovated hospitalbuilt.

Page 13: Dossier (summarized) joaquin galan architect

03 HEALTHCARE REMODELLING

-SUSTAINABILITY & ENERGY EFFICIENCY.

-Moreover, Hospitals at the same timecan improve the aesthetics of thebuilding and increase energy efficiencylevels and profitability with adequateinsulation system in the facadesenvelope. Modern ventilated facadeenvelope. Modern ventilated facadesystems ensure an improved thermalinsulation of the building.

The ventilated chamber creates a"chimney effect" caused by heating theouter face, which produces a variation inthe density of the air layer of theinterspaces with respect to the ambientair, with a consequent upwardmovement and will improve the comfortand temperature.

12/20

In most Hospital remodelling asignificant saving of air conditioning hasbeen noticed ( especially at night )because it was at the time when thecalories accumulated on the outer wallswere coming back to the interior space.

PROLOGUE

With the objective of bringingspecialized health care to people, wepropose the models of Highresolution Hospital or Health centerswhich are configured as smallhospitals nearby, likewise located inremote geographical areas ofremote geographical areas ofmetropolitan area, small town or inzones with high population growth,in order to increase the accessibilityof citizens to health services .Improving the functioning of mainHospitals.

HEALTH CENTERS with variable sizedepend on different elements thatcount or population they serve. However, usually they all have

13/20

However, usually they all haveaccess to resources and providebasic services such as continuouscare and some common specialtiessuch as medical consulting, primarycare, traumatology, dentistry, day´shospital, ophthalmology, paediatricsconsulting, etc.

Page 15: Dossier (summarized) joaquin galan architect

04 NEW HOSPITALS & HEALTH CENTERSNEW HOSPITALS & HEALTH CENTERS

Usually the most complex specialties such assurgery are not present and either patientrooms , in these cases requiring always todepend on the main Hospital .However themost of time they usually include emergencyservices and ambulances with easycommunication with it. (Sup. between 1500and 5000 M2).and 5000 M2).

The main advantage of Health Centers , isthey are nearby for a neighbourhood or smalltown, and it´s usually Include PermanentEmergency Services.

AMBULANCES HEALTHCARE BUILDING

The main building, whose function is to serveas a basis for ambulances 061 and health

14/20

as a basis for ambulances 061 and healthpersonnel, has a large overhang, which has adual function, firstly isolate ambulances ofhospital environment and on the otherthrough that cantilevered cover thereplacement and maintenance of facilitiesambulances. It’s a building to fulfill a greatservice for the hospital and it has the capacityof allowing an accurate and fast service tocitizens.

Page 16: Dossier (summarized) joaquin galan architect

CENTERS OF HIGH RESOLUTION:

Assume a higher degree of health care, whichtry to improve the accessibility andmanagement, both in the diagnostic andtherapeutic, enhance the high resolutionthrough consultation single act, alternativesto traditional hospitalization, outpatientto traditional hospitalization, outpatientsurgery, reduce response times and speedcircuits consultations and examinations, all aspart of a strategy of greater efficiency andquality of care through new functionalstructures that enhance the care processcooperation between primary care andspecialized care. Or even only have onemedical specialty. Oncology, Maternity, Acutetreatment, etc.

The main advantage of Centers of HighResolution should be they are becoming

15/20

Resolution should be they are becomingspecialized small hospitals in each medicalspecialty like oncology, mental health, maternity, etc, with or without hospitalization( or even day hospital only) in any case withinvasive operating rooms. They have a greatproximity to citizens and avoid congestion inhospitals.

HOSPITALS.-

-Of course I will not pretend to teach them todesign a new plant hospital, although curiouslyover the years, virtually the type of design has beenreduced to one or two, with different variants.

-Typically, they tend to build sanitary cities, which-Typically, they tend to build sanitary cities, whichare normally not very functional, because if the sizeexceeds 100,000 M2 ,they stop being functional, and eventually, they become several buildingstogether, and has the problem that it is found onthe outskirts of the city. Obviously it also has anumber of advantages:

-It is important a rational, functional, minimalistand clear hospital design will allow us to optimizeresources, facilities, control levels of sustainabilityand energy efficiency, and likewise to optimize thebudget, which will let us choose the best materials

16/20

budget, which will let us choose the best materialsinside, while the rest of the budget is left to make agreat building , architecturally of forefront, withoutforgetting that a building is a reflection of itsinterior.

HOSPITALS.-

Advantages:

-You can design the building at theforefront of architecture.

-You can use the best technologies,-You can use the best technologies, materials and using larger surfacesreduces its cost.

-You can make tall buildings or glassfacades, but with fixed or adjustableprotections.

-The cost per M2 is lower.

- You can exploit energy efficiency to- You can exploit energy efficiency tonearly zero consumption of thebuilding to become the mostsustainable and energy efficient.

17/20

Page 19: Dossier (summarized) joaquin galan architect

IMPROVEMENT IN SUSTAINABILITY & ENERGY

EFFICIENCY.

-You can implement cogeneration systems and save up to50 percent on electricity, if you apply geothermal designcriteria, you save the other 50 percent. Therefore theenergy consumption could be almost zero.energy consumption could be almost zero.

- Hospitals can improve energy efficiency levels andprofitability with adequate insulation system in thebuilding envelope. Modern glass ventilated façadesystems guarantee even improve thermal insulation of thebuilding, allowing ventilate the facade. And even if somesort of aluminium slats or "brise-soleil" fixed or adjustableis designed, improving the design, and avoid lost energy.Another saving system could be to use patios, in the lowerfloors (even the upper floor, where there are usually thepatient rooms) which can have an easy control of both thetemperature and ventilation. And finally if possible,

18/20

temperature and ventilation. And finally if possible, developing green roofs, which create comfort and energysavings.

Page 20: Dossier (summarized) joaquin galan architect

05 CONCLUSIONS

- Actually , the main healthcaremultinationals of equipment areAmerican or if they are European, have even more presence here thanin Europe.

-We are talking about a market thatmoves nearly 18 percent of US GDP.moves nearly 18 percent of US GDP.(3000 billion dollars at year in healthwithin the country ) withoutarchitecture and equipmentexported to other countries.

-It is necessary to clarify the designof facilities, not necessary to usemany materials but whether thebest one. Thus we will keep much ofthe budget to make a significantbuilding.

19/20

-It is necessary to improve energyefficiency, without ever sacrificingdesign, as an example, it´ll be able touse large glass facades, butdesigning a series of fixed or rotaryumbrellas, which at the same timecan improve the design and regulatethe temperature and energyefficiency.

Page 21: Dossier (summarized) joaquin galan architect

05 CONCLUSIONS

- My main added value is that perfect knowledgehow it works from with in hospitals and not atheoretical way by having experience in designand implementation of healthcare equipment inalmost all specialties, it can take advantage fromAmerican technology, during the design ofprojects and work´s management, and makinggreat architecture.great architecture.

- In the European model the architect has thecoordination of all the professional frombeginning to end.

- I don´t want to replace the engineers, bycontrast I try to complement them and takeadvantage of their knowledge.

- In my humble opinion, during the works, always appear new problems that didn´t exist inthe project. Therefore if the same architect has

20/20

the project. Therefore if the same architect hashad the management of project, it will be easierto make the necessary changes about the work´smanagement without increasing the budget, always having a coordination with all the team, especially the engineers.

- If any professional would be able to achievethese goals in healthcare architecture, the restof the different projects will be so much easierfor them logically.
