We continue utilizing the successful model of Champion-led project teams. Going from the original 12 projects 2 have were completed 1 removed – Ascent Douglas – Attraction of the Outdoor Manufacturing Industry – did not produce the ROI to continue active marketing in that area. 2 combined Valley Vision Implementation joins the Main Street Gardnerville & Minden Momentum projects “Accelerating Advanced Manufacturing” joins both Maximizing WNC and the Energy Science Park – through active outreach to our Technology businesses 1 added – “Open for Business” – improving permit processes & communications – business sector

In close coordination with the priorities of the Douglas County School District, the K-12 team which includes involvement from GE Bently Nevada is supporting Opening of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) Center – 2014 – as a location where the community can embrace and be involved with this type of educational focus. Through the county’s grant to NNDA – Project Lead the Way, STEM Curriculum, was identified and two teachers trained. 3 more to be trained this summer. Pathway to Engineering program is already being implemented; Biomedical Sciences Program offered Fall 2014. “Jump Start” program starts in the Fall – Douglas High School seniors can earn dual credit for math and English and will attend classes at WNC Minden Campus – this will give the a “Jump Start” on college. To help businesses attract talented employees and their families to Douglas County, the School District just added a new web portal on its homepage that links to info about the district’s academic performance, programs, etc. GE has already shared the link with its key management staff.

“More than just hiking trails” Soaring trails, water trails at the Lake, astronomy trails, and more… With the proliferation of gaming and the focus on creating the “Destination” it is important to add a diversity of outdoor activities to visitors more to do and increase room night stays Debra Lang & Carlo Luri, are Co-Champions The team will be furthering the development of Maps, Apps and Links in coordination with the Visitor Authorities to guide tourist to these attractions. All of the Champions (from all teams) have discussed the importance the Pony Express Trail could play in the linking of the Valley to the Lake Team will assist in Stakeholder & Community outreach to determine alternative routes for make the Pony Express Trail a reality.

Developing other tourist opportunities is one of the Board’s Strategic Plan objectives. Through partnership with Bently Enterprises, Douglas County and Carson City an alignment study is almost complete that identifies options to connect to the V&T in Carson and another tourist excision loop from Minden. Other potential projects for consideration are a Canary Car, somewhat like a trolley, that could run between the historic downtowns Lake Tahoe Passenger Ferry – Still under development with TTD as the lead Longer Term Project – Lake – Valley Gondola to connect visitors from the Lake to the Valley leaving vehicles behind
