Make sure to set some time aside and get to the range for a little group therapy. This month I want to thank the Renewal Committee and our Treasurer, Connie Baum, for all of their help, with out their time and tedious work I'd still be knee deep in renewals. Thank you all very much. Speaking of renewals, we still have a few out there, so if you have that feeling like your missing something and can't quite put your finger on it, it might be your Pioneer Membership.....feel free to send it in. :) We will also be holding a second Orientation in May, dates will be May 19th and 20th from 6-9 at our Brickyard range. If you know someone who can't make a Saturday and would like to attend, please contact me. Now, I know I said the last one would be the only one for awhile but Steve Brackeen with Blue Steel Guns and Ammo in Raytown has been promoting the club like a Champ. He came up with 10 guys who have been wanting to join but just can't do a Saturday with their jobs. Having that many new members is worth my time to do another class and grow the club. We need to also send a shout out to Brad Alpert at Missouri Bullet Company. I was down there the other day loading up for the Whittington Center and Brad asked if he could send some bullets back with me to pass out as door prizes at one of our next events. I passed them along to our 1st Vice President Ken Keifer who in return, I believe, passed them out at PPC's free shooting event that they held in honor of Bruce Simpson. Thanks Brad!! May 17th from 9am -5pm Gunners Firearms in Raymore will be having their 4th Annual Customer Appreciation Event. Stop by for discounts and specials on guns, ammo and accessories along with free food, drinks and drawings to win firearms and much more. Their setting a table aside for me to go up their and promote the club. Make sure to try and come by. PLEASE REMEMBER!!!!! Just because you're a Pioneer Gun Club Member doesn't mean that every gun store or gun ad you reply to or walk in owes you something!!! Yes we do have perks for being members of Pioneer but walking into a place and pulling your badge out isn't going to make you start levitating nor will any clouds separate for his Majesty to come gift you his Crown!! MY Goodness.... I was at an establishment the other day where a couple of Pioneer Members had walked in and explained to THE OWNER how our discount work. REALLY??? I know having almost a 1000 members, we are going to have a few members who will make you scratch your head sometimes. I also know we're only going to hear the horror stories cause I haven't met any members who I think would represent the club like that. Heck, almost every time I go down to shoot I wind up meeting some one new who I could stand down there all day with laughing or learning from. I hated hearing what I heard the other day. I was embarrassed by it. I asked the guy behind the counter "Who in here is a Pioneer Member cause the stores name was on the renewal." That's what prompted me to say something. I didn't back my car up and walk in and drop my badge on the counter and tell them... I from Pioneer load me up!! Ha you all know I always levitate upon entrance anyway ;) Please Remember we represent each other. Now stay safe and i'll see ya on the Range!!

3 PIONEER GUN CLUB – MAY 2014

Women on Target Event: The Women on Target Event will be held on

September 20th. The cost is $30.00 per person. This will include the club furnishing

the bows, arrows, gun, ammo and a lunch. This is an Instructional Shooting Clinic that

provides a friendly and fun introduction to recreational shooting. It is aimed primarily

at women that are new to shooting but any lady may participate. The event will

include rifle, shotgun, pistol and archery. Participants may sign up for any or all of these disciplines. Many volunteers will be needed

to put this event on. If you would be willing to help, please contact Jack Smart or Connie Baum. Ladies may sign up now. There will

be a limit of 50 participants. Sign up now.

Monday Trap Shooting: The Monday evening trap shoot has begun. There was a small turnout on the 7th. On April 14th

the shotgun shooters took a page from the Pistol Shooters play book and did not show up either due to “bad weather”. Come on guys

show some backbone. It was in the upper 30’s with a slight breeze of 30 mph and possible rain. However, there was no snow, the sun

was shining and it looked really nice outside. On Monday the 21st 7 shotgun shooters and one pistol guy showed up to shoot. These

brave men endured some really bad weather and a lot of BS to practice the skill of shooting a moving target. It was in the lower 70’s

with lots of sun and little or no wind. How can anyone stand to be out doors in weather like that? We can certainly understand why

the no-action group stayed indoors. We start about 5:00 pm and shoot until we are out of ammo or get tired. Just plain fun—no

competition. Lots of BS. Beginners welcome. Come and join the fun. See you next Monday.

Trees: Thanks to Joe Tapko for planting 200 trees (very, very, very small evergreens) in the northeast corner of our McBride

range. These will eventually provide some sound reduction between our property and our neighbors to the north. Atta Boy Joe.

Priority List: The Executive Board is working on the priority list of projects we need to accomplish in the next 1, 2 and 5

years. If you have any special things you would like to see on this list please contact an Eboard member and let them know what it is.

One thing that is being discussed is an increase in dues with the increase amount put in a dedicated fund for a new indoor range.

Please let the Executive Board know how you feel about improving the Brickyard range, building a new range and the dues increase.

New Indoor Range Fund: One of our fine members donated $200 to help start a fund for a new indoor range. The .22

Games division donated approximately $600 to this fund and the eboard also added $200 to it to start the dedicated Money Market

fund. ($1,000 was needed to start the fund). Donations to this fund will be greatly appreciated and the eboard will soon come up with

other ways to increase it.

Rifle Range # 2: Thanks to Tom Fischer for fixing the switches, lights and sounder on this range. It will help keep everyone

safe. Good job Tom.

Shooting Season: Warm weather is finally here --at least part time. The days are also getting longer and people are coming to

the range later in the day and staying later. As a reminder the shooting hours are 7:00 am to sunset Monday through Friday and 8:00

am to sunset on weekends and holidays. The head lights on your car and flashlights are not small suns. If you can’t see the big one in

the sky it has set – stop shooting.

Dues: Your dues were due March 1st: By the time you read this you are late. There is a late fee of $25.00 for

dues that are not postmarked on or before March 31. If your dues were not postmarked on or before March 31st your gate card

was shut off and will remain so until your dues and late fee are paid. If you are a NRA life member you do not have to send in proof

of NRA membership unless you became a life member during the past year. You do have to send in a completed renewal form with

your dues and late fee. Failure to send in your dues, completed renewal form and proof of NRA membership (if you are an

annual member) will result in everything being sent back. It is your responsibility to get it right the first time. Get your

renewal form at one of the ranges, in the newsletter or from the web site. If you are having trouble paying your dues at this time

contact Ty Markle to see about a temporary withdrawal. Just to give you a heads up—because of no change in the By-Laws your

dues will be due on March 1st next year.

Small Berm: Thanks to Rick Lance for constructing the small berm in front of the target frames at the 100 yard line on Rifle

Range #1. The berm was constructed to protect the target stands that allow the target frames to be easily raised and lowered.

Unfortunately, someone thought it would be great sport to see if they could shoot them up so the berm was needed to protect them.

It’s too bad we have members like that but we do. It will be muddy until the grass gets to growing so please be patient.

PPC/Bullseye Building: Work is slowly proceeding on the building. The electrical is almost done and sheetrock is being

hung. Help is needed taping and mudding the sheetrock. Thanks to Bob Hudson, Richard Muir, Joe Tapko, Bob Harris, Terry

Wright, James Smoots, Pam & Mike Wright and George Monahan for the help they did last month. Come out and give them a hand

with the work.

Signing in: Many people are still not signing in when they come to the range. The range rules state that you must sign in when

you get to the range before beginning to shoot and sign out before leaving. All of your guests are also required to sign in and out.

Please follow the rules. Failure to do so may result in you being asked to leave the range.

Rifle Ranges: Don’t for get to sound the horn and turn on the lights and bells before going down range. Remember you

cannot handle firearms while people are down range and/or the bells and lights are on. These procedures are in place to protect our

members and guests (including you) so please review them and follow them at all times—even if you are the only one on the

range. You never know when someone else will drive up and start handling guns and/or shooting. No one wants to report to your

family that you were shot (or that you shot someone) because the rules were not followed.

Work is going on in the New Building We are working Mondays, if you have

time, come on out.

Smoots, George Monahan, Richard Muir, Bob Harris, Bob Hudson, Joe Tapko,

Terry Wright, Griff Picket and George M

Below is a list of jobs looking for someone to step forward and take them on and

time, Go do one.

We are nearly done with the interior of the new building. It is plumed, wired and

ready for sheet rock. If you are a sheet rocker we could sure use your help. We

are now mudding and taping.

I would like to thank Michael Richeson for the loan of the baker scaffold it will be a big help with the sheet rock.

Grass mowing is going to be starting soon we could use some help at the Brickyard clearing rocks sticks and debris from

along the new road. If you can help with this we need your help.

We missed the neighborhood clean up around the Brickyard. They got out and cleaned along the road. I know that you are

all disappointed. It is a good time to show that we are good neighbors.

Paint outside of Brickyard Range.

Repair roof of Barn

Remove all old fences that are not being used at McBride

Junior News by Ed Camp

Our junior program is doing very well. We have some great young shooters participating. We are at the indoor range

every Thursday, including Club meeting night. On this second Thursday of the month the rifle team practices air rifle.

They have already traveled to one match and are preparing for another soon.

At the last meeting I was pleased to present the Distinguished Expert Award to two of our young shooters, Devin

Schwindt (on left) and Noah Austin (on right). This level of achievement meant they spent hours and hundreds of

round of ammunition to train to be the best. It was an honor to present them

with their awards.

Over the first weekend of May (3th & 4th) I and Jason Austin will be in Vienna,

Ohio attending a Smallbore/Air Rifle Coach Class. This is the first time for

Jason and a refresher for me. We are determined to make our juniors the best

and safest shooters in the state. That is almost an 850 mile drive, but when you

see the faces of these young shooters as they shoot a good score, it is worth it.

September this year will make my 30th year of teaching young shooters.

Although it is slightly longer than 30 years, I count from when I ran the first

Junior Olympic Smallbore Championship in 1984 in Washington State. This

was when the NRA was running them. Here in Missouri I have been putting

them on at Pioneer for about 7 years with USA Shooting (The Olympic

Committee). I hope to be able to host them for many more years.

And now here is news from our shooting team from Team Captain Keeley Stone, daughter of member John Stone.

Pioneer Sharpshooters Team News – Keeley Stone, Captain

Here is the latest news on The Pioneer Sharpshooters junior marksman team at the club.

Recently Morgan Patterson has joined the team and we are very happy for him to be a part of it, also the team

has gotten the chance to do separate training with Ed Camp to help with learning about the sport and to tweak positions

so that we do the best we can. On April 10th, Noah Austin and Devin Schwindt were awarded their Distinguished

Expert Awards at the last club meeting. On April 13th, the team had the opportunity to receive training in high power

from Chris Calumpong and Jesse Johnson who both received their Distinguished Expert in the Pioneer Junior Program.

It was a wet Sunday but the team still enjoyed the chance to shoot a full course of fire with their AR15s that the MSSA

has provided.

The Team – (back roll L to R) Devin Schwindt, Noah Austin, Keeley

Stone (Captain)

Front Roll (L to R) Morgan Patterson and Spenser Rice.

Pioneer Gun Club given Awards at the Annual MSSA Dinner – Ed Camp

The MSSA or Missouri Sport Shooting Association is the NRA Representative for the State of Missouri. As such they

are the sponsoring organization for all State Championships. If you intend to shoot in one of the many activities I

suggest you join them – its only $20 a year.

On to the good news. At the Annual Meeting and Dinner the Pioneer Gun Club was

awarded the Club of the Year for its work with junior shooters. Here is a picture of

Jack Smart, Club President with the award.

George Monahan was award the Senior M1 Garand Champion for the State, George has

earned this award before; he is a heck of a Garand shooter. Some of you might come

out to the monthly high-power rifle matches and try to beat him. George travels to a lot

of matches and shoots a lot of ammo; he will be hard to beat.

Last, but not least, Ed Camp was awarded the Sportsman of the Year for his work with

young shooters. I would say that Pioneer Gun Club had a good showing this year, but

what can we do for next year? Get involved in shooting, attend matches, and learn to be

a better and safer shooter. Let’s continue to make Pioneer the best gun club in the state.

Cleaning up after yourself at Brickyard

Here is a picture of a $120 pair of special shooting shoes worn for the

first time at the indoor range. The pieces of copper you see are bits of

bullet casings picked up from the floor. In our club rules there is a rule

about the Brickyard about cleaning up after yourself when finished

shooting, it mentions using the vacuum. There is a box of gloves on the

heater vent to use with the vacuum since it gets dirty. It is not hard to

use, plug it in, turn it on, and use the hose to vacuum up the powder

dust and bits of bullet casings. There is even a broom and a push mop

you can use. Leave cleaner than when you got there, everyone help out

with this!

April Smallbore Silhouette Practice Match

There’s an old Sea Shanty “Way Hey, Blow the Man down”. It could have been

our theme song for the match held on April 12th. The winds were not only trying

to ‘Blow the Men and Women Down’ but they actually were blowing the pigs,

turkeys, and rams right off the stands. Often the wind blew down more rams than

the shooters hit.

We had sixteen shooters brave the cool temps and high winds. For many of the

shooters this was their first Silhouette adventure. It was a very challenging day

for all the competitors, especially first timers. Ken Keifer was the top scorer

with 19, Ross Wolford scored 12, and Rhon Ledbetter scored 11. Everyone else

shot 10 or less, but everyone hit at least 2 animals.

Our next match will be May 10th. Sight-in begins at 8:00AM and we will begin the match at 9:00AM. This match will be an NRA

Sanctioned Match, but participants do not have to be NRA members. Cost of the match for May will be $10.00. Bring your .22

rifle out and see if you are up to the challenge.

See you on May 10th, McBride 100 yard range.
