Sometimes changes are not always welcome, however this catalogue represents our transformation from a small localised luminaire manufacturer into a significant part of a global operation.

Over the last twelve months, the staff of Eagle Lighting Australia have worked tirelessly on implementing a number of key milestones in our development. From the growth of our Engineering department, to the establishment of our company Mission, Vision and Value statements. From our Design & Marketing team who have created this catalogue and developed our brand image, to the overall efforts of all our employees who ensure the user experience of ELA is as good as it can be.

It is an exciting time to be leading Eagle Lighting Australia forward, one of our key building blocks is the continual development of our luminaire range, and this catalogue is a reflection of some of the innovation and evolution of our product. New luminaires within this document include the Uno System, Enviro Diffused and Cleanroom CLB options.

We have also showcased noteworthy projects across Australia where our luminaires have been best utilised, and for your convenience have added a technical section and index.

In order for an organisation to move forward individually and collectively, one must acknowledge and respect its past.

From establishment in 1972 as a small, Melbourne-based manufacturer of fluorescent lighting, Eagle Lighting Australia has evolved into an international company that manufactures, imports/exports and distributes premium quality luminaires throughout Australasia.

In nearly forty years of existence, ELA has represented many of the finest luminaire brands. The biggest change in our business was the acquisition in 2007 of ELA by the Fagerhult Group who are the largest lighting company in the Nordic region and third largest in the European market. Significantly this change brought unprecedented access to an international network of suppliers, products and knowledge. These resources have been advantageous to ourselves and our customers in Australia and New Zealand.

In 2009, ELA moved its administration, production and distribution into a purpose built facility at Melbourne Airport. Through careful planning, the move into a fully customised facility has opened up key business opportunities for us. We are able to showcase luminaires in a real

environment, specifically a working office demonstrating the effect lighting has on staff and their environment.

To ensure we create light fittings with maximum efficiency, we have established a world-class manufacturing facility with state-of-the-art machinery. Today, these facilities have grown to be the cornerstone of our business, allowing us to manufactures, import and distribute orders throughout Australasia. We’re so proud of what we’ve achieved, that in recent times we’ve opened the doors and invited industry to experience our facilities.

Currently, Eagle Lighting employs over 100 staff in Australia, nearly doubling in size over the last four years. We have key partnerships in the remaining states of Australia, and in the past year expanded our operation into South Australia and to New Zealand under the Fagerhult brand.

Our growth has been nothing short of staggering, yet we’re not content to rest on our laurels. With the combined abilities of our richly diverse and knowledgeable staff, Eagle Lighting Australia will continue to provide innovative and affordable lighting solutions to the marketplace deep into the 21st century.

The story of Fagerhult begins in a small Swedish town of the same name, in the Christmas of 1943. Bertil Svensson, then 23-years-old, was working as an electrician when he came up with an idea for a present. Bertil saw that his mother, who was busy helping others during the day, needed a way to relax during the evening, but with little light due to scarcity of electricity in many houses of the time, Bertil saw a problem that required a solution. Over the following months he brought the pieces together to form his project, a question mark shaped lamp that would shine light directly over his mother’s head so she could read and do her needlework. When he saw her reaction as he revealed his present, he made a decision that day to create lamps to respond to people’s needs. He would create light.

With little money, and little business knowledge, Bertil enlisted the help of two friends, Helmer Anderson and Harold Ulfenborg to start a company –

Fagerhult. By 1945, the company was officially established, had quadrupled sales by the end of their second year, and had built the first of forty buildings that still stands at the Fagerhult factory today.

It wasn’t until 1949 that Bertil truly established the direction of this company. He saw the future of Fagerhult not just in creating lamps, but in creating crisp, bright lighting for public spaces. He was drawn by the challenge and complexity and the need for innovation. He saw the need for people to have perfect clarity in their workspace and he did this with the mantra ‘the more we know, the more we can achieve’.

As Fagerhult turned their focus into providing light solutions for complicated environments like schools, hospitals, apartments and offices, they began the process of arming themselves with knowledge. They gathered information and created in-house studies of light. They set up an ‘experiment department’

where they explored new materials and techniques, they developed new machinery and created new technology, thus setting the direction of the company.

What was once a small village, became a bustling town as the factory grew and employed more staff. Bertil had a full-time building crew, who when they weren’t busy at Fagerhult, were constructing housing and facilities for his employees and townspeople. Knowledge is at the heart of Fagerhult. The insight into the spoken and unspoken needs of customers drives product development.

One of the most exciting areas of development has been the growth in our Engineering department. This team is the backbone of our commitment to providing the right lighting solutions for our customers and our dedication to ongoing development.

The thought behind ‘from concept to completion’ is about being able to follow an idea through a design process and see it come to fruition. Through our in-house Engineering team, and world-class manufacturing plant, we now have that ability.

Using the latest 3D design software Solidworks, ideas are brought to life as a working concept. Parts such as electrical ballasts, componentry, lamps and gear trays are simulated in a digital environment, long before the first piece of steel is punched and formed by one of our NC Turret machines. The advantage of using 3D computer aided design (CAD) is the efficient review of designs prior to manufacture rather than after.

Also, by simulating fittings in different installation environments, we can make informed decisions on what works and what doesn’t. Of course, once a new fitting is approved we can easily and efficiently create shopfloor drawings, bill-of-materials (BOM), datasheets and production processes.

Our design components are translated into NC Fabriwinn software, where they are programmed then sent to the factory for punching and forming. They are then folded and go through one of three Brake Presses as per the supplied shopfloor drawings.

After folding, a new fitting will be cleaned and put through our state-of-the-art paint line. It is assembled and wired, electrically tested, packaged and dispatched to the customer. The attention to detail in the formative stages will heavily influence the lighting solutions our Engineering team is able to provide.

SOLUTION DRIVEN DESIGNS

You should consider the products within this catalogue as our ‘stock’ items. However one of the strengths of Eagle Lighting is the ability to create ‘Solution Driven’ designs. We pride ourselves on being adaptable, creative and innovative, we believe this to be one of our core strengths.

Examples of some solution-driven designs include – an existing wallwasher luminaire, adapted to include a removable wipe-down diffuser. The hospital required it to be installed into an existing suspended ceiling. We were also approached to create a secure bed-light for a prison which had to be installed in a precast concrete wall. The solution lay in the creation of a special sleeve that remained in place during the concrete pour, and allowed us to secure the fitting at a later date.

It is advantageous to be recognised for being flexible, yet there is also the potential for any of our customisations to become a standard fitting in the future which in turn is to the benefit of any future potential customers.

MARKET DRIVEN DESIGNS

As part of our product development process we are constantly analysing the lighting market to identify gaps. Our aim is to be proactive and to be seen as the leader for others to follow.

The perfect example of this is the brand new UNO luminaire. This modular fitting with an aluminium extruded body, is available in both single, and continuous option of any overall length as required. The development of this fitting came about as a resolution to a practical need. Our Engineering team set about designing a new luminaire with similar light output specifications as the existing fitting, but to be much more user friendly during installation.

Through the relationship between Fagerhult and ELA, there is a commitment to ongoing manufacturing investment at our Melbourne facility.

We believe the concept of ‘Made in Australia’ is a principal upon which ELA can build for it’s long-term success. To communicate this, we have been holding factory tours for members of the wider lighting industry to showcase our investment, not just in manufacturing but in engineering and product development also.

One of the strategies behind our heavy investment in our factory and operations in Melbourne is to marry our machines and capabilities to those of the other members within the global Fagerhult Group. The goal being to produce a global range locally.

The investment in ELA, is also an investment in the Australian economy. Through the Global Financial Crisis we are proud to have experienced a period of growth both in employee numbers and sales. We are now able to take a global product and if needs be, develop solutions specific to the diverse Australian market and its customers. One of our major priority is our on-time delivery performance. We can react to changes in the local market whether it be a technological advance, a market surge towards a particular product, or a reaction to the changing Australian climate, with much greater efficiency.

Our move to the new Manufacturing facility at Melbourne Airport, gave us the opportunity to invest in a world class, environmentally friendly paintline.

This closed-circuit, state-of-the-art paintline incorporating ITW GEMA technologies, was selected specifically after consultation between Fagerhult, several suppliers and ourselves. It was important that whatever option we chose, it was in-line with Fagerhult recommendations and also had similar painting capacities that exist at other facilities within the group. Manufacturing Globalisation practices ensure we have the ability to produce a luminaire in Australia, to identical specifications as one produced in a factory in Sweden, China, Germany or England.

Some of the important features of this paintline are as follows:

+ An environmentally friendly, closed system powdercoating operation that exceeds all relevant Australian standards.

+ A seamless and fully automated powdercoating process, where raw luminaire components are degreased and treated, dried, coated and baked before being prepared for assembly.

+ Incorporated into the water-based, degreasing cycle is an eco-seal application. Through a three-stage procedure, two parts of eco-seal are combined to give all of our luminaires an additional rust-inhibiting seal.

+ Eco-sealing is essential as we are rustproofing the entire luminaire including all its raw edges. We see this as value-added benefit to the end-user when you begin to compare the quality of our fittings and pricing with competitors.

As a member of the Fagerhult Group, we now have unveted access to global support, resources and knowledge in all aspects of the lighting industry. The single, biggest benefit of being part of this global network is in manufacturing support.

From a product-only point of view, global support provides advances in technology, manufacturing and higher quality of parts and materials developed in facilities across the planet, equally we can share our products and ideas within the group.

Through the investment here in Australia, we can now produce a fitting to the exact specifications as one produced in Sweden, China, Germany or England.

We also benefit from operational support, this includes adopting logistics and sales software, and access to literature and marketing materials. We often access the knowledge acquired by the Fagerhult Lighting Academy a division of the Fagerhult Group established in 2004. The Academy’s foremost task is to gather, refine and distribute knowledge from and to the Fagerhult Group through e-learning, seminars, conferences and courses.

The Fagerhult family is growing either through acquisition or by partnering in key growth areas, and we’re excited to be part of the growth, but also to pass on the benefits to our customers.

OUR LABORATORY

Our laboratory, Technical Centre, has had an SMTA-agreement with Intertek ETL Semko since 1993. The agreement means that Intertek ETL Semko has inspected and approved our test equipment and quality system as well as the expertise of our personnel.

The Technical Centre is also very well equipped with instruments to perform other tests on luminaires. Instruments of the highest quality and accuracy are in place to inspect the product’s EMC-properties (after IEC/EN 55015 which is a recognised standard in Australia, ACMA is the regulating authority), to verify lighting performance and other quality tests.

Other tests include products to EN 60598. EN 60598 (IEC 60598) similar to products tested to AS/NZS 60598 for both Australia and New Zealand, differences are mainly related to voltage, flammability and type of flex and plug used.

The Technical Centre also participate in standardisation work within the field of luminaires via our membership of the Swedish Electrical Commission team TK34. This team discusses proposals for amendments to testing standards. Consequently, we have the possibility to influence new standards as well as keeping ourselves well informed about future amendments.

In addition to annual audits, Intertek ETL Semko also has the right to visit our laboratory at any time or call in products for comparison tests.

THIRD PARTY CERTIFICATION – FOR YOUR SAFETY

Fagerhult has chosen, despite third party certification no longer being required, to continue with this procedure for its basic range. This is to ensure that the customer receives products that conform to all current safety requirements and where the product is inspected by an independent body. Variants of the basic range, for example, products with HF-dim or with emergency light functionality, are not usually certified by a third party. However, the safety levels on these designs are just as high as for other products.

Other in house tests to the appropriate International standards include IP ratings, IK ratings and thermal testing.

NATA

Additional NATA accredited testing is performed on selected products in Australia to ensure compliance and Australian and New Zealand standards and to guarantee stated performance values. Tests include AS/NZS 60598, thermal and photometric performance and IP ratings.

Whereas once a Lighting Design was as simple as measuring the height of a wall, the width of a room and making some calculations. Today, the lighting designer must consider what the vision of the architect, engineer or client is.

Have you ever walked into a room and wondered, “How would this room look bathed in light?” Or gazed at a feature wall, and queried if some simple up lighting might enhance that space. In conjunction with our Sales Team, the Designers at Eagle Lighting Australia can replicate any space using the latest CAD software (AGi32, Dialux and 3D Studio Max) but also calculate and generate 3D Computer Generated Images (CGI). These reflect how any space might look, complete with a representation of the luminaires, along with all the photometric data specific to the design.

The benefit to the builder, specifier or end user is that decisions can be made earlier in the planning of any project, avoiding costly mistakes once construction has started. The smallest adjustment or detail can be altered, a new visualisation can be created, a new calculation can be made, and the end result will therefore be more cost effective but also more dynamic.

ORganiC ResPOnse lighTing COnTROls

HOW ORGANIC RESPONSE® WORKS

At the heart of Distributed Intelligence is the Sensor Node, which is integrated into each luminaire during manufacture to create an Organic Response Enabled® luminaire. Each Sensor Node contains a motion sensor, infrared transmitter, infrared receiver and ambient light meter.

The Sensor Nodes communicate with each other as follows:

Organic Response® has developed a Distributed Intelligence lighting control system that allows each individual luminaire to make lighting decisions based on the presence of occupants in its immediate vicinity, ambient light levels, and information it receives from its neighbouring luminaires. It then contributes information back to the luminaire community, so other luminaires can also make more informed lighting decisions. Although they make decisions individually, Distributed Intelligence means all the lights in a defined space act as a coordinated community.

1. The moment a Sensor Node detects occupancy, the luminaire responds by outputting a predetermined light level. It simultaneously communicates with its immediate neighbour luminaires using a Level 1 proximity limited wireless infrared, telling them it can see someone.

2. On receipt of this level 1 signal the neighbouring Sensor Nodes know that there is someone within one light fitting of them, and respond by outputting a predetermined light level appropriate to that occupancy profile (e.g. 80% brightness). They simultaneously relay a Level 2 signal to their own neighbours, notifying them of the occupant’s relative proximity.

3. This propagates throughout the floor, creating the Occupancy Information CloudTM. Each Sensor Node receives signals indicating how close someone is to it, and responds by emitting the appropriate light level based on the rich occupancy information it continually receives (and disseminates). The Occupancy Information CloudTM is illustrated over the page.

THE OCCUPANCY INFORMATION CLOUD

When Sensor Nodes are integrated into a typical lighting array, the density and position of luminaires is such that there is complete coverage of a given floor space, thus creating an Occupancy Information CloudTM with complete building coverage.

By utilizing information contained in the Occupancy Information CloudTM, devices can make intelligent decisions locally, in response to their surroundings. Furthermore third party systems, for example Building Management Systems (BMS), can interface with the Occupancy Information CloudTM via an Interface Node allowing building-wide systems to more intelligently interact with human occupants.

Organic Response® technology has the ability to revolutionise the way lights, and subsequently buildings, are controlled globally. Our aim is to establish the Occupancy Information CloudTM as a global standard in collecting and disseminating location-specific, realtime occupancy information. Once established, the Occupancy Information CloudTM will provide an occupancy information service that has yet-to-be-imagined potential to be utilised by a variety of third party systems to enhance their own services (e.g. heating, ventilation and air conditioning, blinds, etc) and significantly improve energy efficiency and occupancy comfort.

Encompassing a range of new technology and innovative design features, Aureled is an outstanding solution that delivers an impressive system efficacy of up to 112lm/w whilst maintaining excellent glare control for office environments.

The “Conical De-Glaring Prism” (CDP) and masking agent eliminate distracting LED micro points and controls the light in the 65˚ plane to within 3000cd/m2. Controlling glare with these intense light sources is becoming more and more critical in our objective to better harmonize light with human activity.

Designed and constructed with a shallow 48mm profile the Aureled will slide into confined spaces. Coupled with a detachable gearbox incorporating a plug-and-play connector this luminaire is the perfect solution for locations where other services are likely to be fouled.

Once installed, the gearbox can be detached from the luminaire housing as required whether for upgrading to dimming or maintenance.

Aureled takes LED technology and turns it into a truly viable solution for full general lighting, capable of replacing luminaires using older T5 technology.

With a system power consumption as low as 23w and an impressive system efficacy of up to 101lm/W, the linjar is ideal for offices and general lighting applications.

The central prism section directs the light downwards whilst the flanking secondary streams push the light side-wards. The contrast between these sections creates a soft transition between the luminaire and the ceiling. This controls the light in the 65 degree plane to within 3000cd/m2, thus ensuring a visually comfortable workplace.

The electronic driver is mounted to the rear of the luminaire in an isolated thermal chamber. By separating the driver, the LEDs within the luminaire are kept at their lowest possible operating temperature. This ensures that the Linjar can offer the longest possible lifetime of its LED components.

Multifive Air G2 is a combined light/air fitting with elongated slots provided in the fascia of the luminaire.

return air is drawn into the ceiling plenum via the air slots provided. supply air can also be provided through an air register which is coordinated by the mechanical and electrical engineer. The air register mounts on top of the slots and is positively fixed to the luminaire with optional brackets.

Multifive Air G2 shares the same optical system as Multifive G2. This ensures a lighting solution that provides flexibility, high efficiency and excellent glare control.

ExAMPLE LAyOuTs adapted from our highly successful Cleanroom and secureroom range of luminaires, the Operating theatre Light has been specifically developed to meet the demanding requirements of the theatre environment.

FEATuREs AND bENEFITs:

+ together with an EPDM gasket, swing-out installation brackets negate the need for a silicon sealant around the fixture in the ceiling. EPDM rubber foam is a closed cell gasket, ensuring a high IP-rating. at less than 10% compression this returns a 100% water tightness. the low-memory nature of the material ensures it will always return to its original shape.

+ Overlapping design construction, provides this system with a continuous seal around the perimeter of the installation.

+ UV-stablised, acrylic diffuser options contribute to the overall IP65-rating, and are easily cleaned and maintained. When compared with polycarbonate options, our acrylic diffuser is resistant to hospital-grade cleaners.

+ By combining the acrylic diffuser with the multi-directional IP-rating of the Operating theatre Light, the result is a luminaire that meets the tough standards required for a PC2 environment.

+ One of the features of meeting the PC2 standard is that zero contaminants can enter the luminaire - including from inside the ceiling cavity. this means the luminaire achieves high maintenance intervals.

+ a removeable gear tray allows for easy installation and maintenance.

Luminaire for recessed mounting in suspended ceilings. Also for ventilated areas. Hole diameter 42–44 mm. For ceiling thicknesses from 15 up to 35 mm. When the suspended ceiling is 15 mm thick, a minimum of 160 mm free space above the suspended ceiling is required.

Lamp housing of aluminium that additionally acts as a heat conductor. Reflector and ballast housing of plastic. Stainless steel spring clips for recessed installation. NiMH-batteries and dual-coloured status LED.

Articulated function also permits installation in confined areas where the distance between the suspended ceiling and the one piece ceiling is limited. The whole ballast and battery pack can be installed and removed through the hole made in the ceiling for the lamp housing. Equipped with self-test as standard (Autotest IV) equivalent to standard EN 62034 with the possibility of external supervision via either a potential free contact or DALI (dependent on product selection).

project

Project managers, TR Group were given the task to transform a 35-floor building in the centre of the Sydney CBD into a quality A-grade rated building. They were looking specifically for a premium Australian manufactured product to suit the new CSR/ Fricker recessed, ceiling grid model based on a 1400x1400 ceiling tile. The fitting also had to be a highly efficient direct/indirect recessed solution.

Eagle Lighting Australia, put forward the Fagerhult Indigo Combo series to be custom manufactured out of our Melbourne facility. As our flagship luminaire providing high visual comfort and a optimum efficiency with a unique low brightness louvre, The INDIGO Combo Beta was the best solution. Once detailed drawings and 3D renders were created and approved, a sample luminaire was made.

The outstanding performance of the Indigo Combo Beta allowed for fewer luminaires to be used in this project, substantially reducing the energy and cooling costs. A lifecycle cost calculation performed on a single floor revealed cost savings of over $24,000 based on a ten-year timeframe. If replicated over 35 floors of this project, savings in excess of $840,000 were calculated.

TR Group are extremely pleased with the end result and believe that the quality of the floor can be attributed to the ambience of the lighting.

Does this award-winning building at 1 Shelly Street in Cockle Bay look familiar? If it does, then its quite likely you’ve seen this unique project in more than a few recent television adverts, including campaigns for the Ford Fiesta and Youi insurance.

This instantly recognisable 35,000m² building consists of a single retail level and ten levels of A-grade commercial office space in the heart of Sydney.

The external diagonal steel structural system sits beyond the building’s sleek, glass facade, eliminating the need for perimeter columns and maximising the quantity and flexibility of the internal floor space. The diagrid pattern was chosen for ease of fabrication and erection, while the simple internal steelwork comprises standard universal beams with regular penetrations for services.

1x28W Fagerhult Multifives were chosen as the base building luminaire. Other areas were highlighted with accent or feature lighting.

A lighting control system was implemented throughout the project making the use of lighting within the building ‘user friendly’ and helping to provide the 6-star Green Star rating required. In a first for the city of Brisbane, 123 Albert St was built with the aim of being the first premium-grade, 6-star Green Star office high rise. This addition to the city skyline, was seen as the physical embodiment of its developers approach to future proofing their properties for the demands of a progressive generation of commercial tenants.

Eagle Lighting Australia has supplied over 2500 Fagerhult Multifive luminaires across Albert Street’s seamless design encompassing 26 levels of office space, eight levels of car parking and a broad light-filled ground floor reception area.

The Fagerhult Multifives were manufactured at our Melbourne production facility, again demonstrating the importance of our part in the Fagerhult Group.

With a total of 47 floors and height approaching 250m, the new City Square is a bold commercial development in the centre of the Perth business district. Reflecting the latest thinking in corporate workplace design and facilities, the centrepiece of the development is a tower which will be the new home for BHP Billiton in Western Australia.

The precinct is set to become the new mecca for living, working and shopping. Heritage buildings along the St Georges Terrace frontage give prominence to the development and will be occupied for commercial and retail purposes as well as new concepts in restaurants, bars and coffee shops.

Currently under construction by Brookfield Multiplex (also the building owner), the City Square Project is set to dominate the West Australia skyline for years to come.

This project near the Hobart CBD serves to illustrate the effective partnerships between Eagle Lighting Australia and its distributors, in this case, Southern Lighting and Distribution.

This 4.5 star NABERS rated project, Southern Lighting met the brief set by engineers SEMF to provide an energy-efficient, low glare lighting solution that effectively lit the working plane from a recessed position, high in the ceiling void.

With a high amount of glass within the upper storey, particular consideration was given to the fittings luminance control.

385 Bourke Street, Melbourne consists of a 41 floor office tower and the twin-level retail complex known as Galleria. The Galleria is showcased underneath a high glass ceiling, bringing natural light to the main shopping mall, which has a range of food, service and specialty shops.

The client requested a Greenstar lighting design for the seven floors they were about to occupy with specifications on Lighting Power Density (ENE-3) and Electric Lighting Levels (IEQ-7). The design aimed to achieve less than 2.0W/m²/100 lux for ENE-3, and for IEQ-7, with no more than 5% of calculation points above 400 lux. As part of the design, it was integral that all AS1680 recommendations on glare were adhered to.

Meeting all the requirements of this project, was the Fagerhult 3x14W Multifive Basic Beta with return air. Why this fitting? Simply, this particular variant of the Multifive luminaire features excellent reflection characteristics courtesy of the Beta R5 louvre with double-parabolic reflector, complemented by the top reflector to maximise light output. In the formative stages of the project our Engineering and Production teams worked to ensure the return air slots on the fitting matched with the air boots on site prior to manufacture.

On completion, the approved design delivered the Greenstar rating requested, gaining two points for meeting the low energy use figure, and an additional point for having no more than 5% of the calculation points exceeded 400lux.

With the industry focussed on squeezing the greatest amount of energy possible out of a space while reducing the footprint, it proves that a luminaire like the Multfive Basic Beta can evolve and deliver as these changes come about, without having to sacrifice on the visual comfort and experience of the occupant.

Currently home to the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, the brief was for a complete refurbishment and to raise the NABERS rating of this iconic piece of Brisbane’s desirable ‘Golden Triangle’.

The specifics of this project were for new fittings to provide improved energy savings over previous installations whilst providing return air. The building managers sourced a luminaire that would be reliable while enhancing the high-profile image of the building. The Fagerhult 25W Multifive Air luminaire was the perfect fit for this project.

With the high light output ratio (LOR) coupled with the 25W, T5 lamp. The Multifive Air achieves an energy saving of over 6.5kW per floor from approximately 140 fittings. Slots on the 1200x300 luminaire body supply air from the existing duct work.

To date the installation of the first eight floors have been completed including three levels for the Australian Securities and Investments Commission. Close working relationships between Facility Managers, Engineers and Contractors meant unnecessary delays were avoided to ensure quick turn-around of orders. Over the following twelve months the remaining floors will be finished as they are made available by existing tenants.

ING Real Estate’s latest development is the distinctive City Views Business Park on Epping Road, North Ryde. This stylish property is a 6,222m², five-level office building with substantial exposure. Incorporated in the design is a striking glazed office facade.

Designed as part of a master plan to redevelop and replace existing buildings onsite. This first development, ‘Building A’ has been constructed to meet a 4.5 star NABERS Design Rating V2.

Inclusions as part of the energy and lighting requirements on this project were for a high-frequency ballast to assist in worker comfort, lighting levels were designed to be maintained at no more than 400 lux for 95% of Net Lettable Area (NLA) on the working plane, lighting power densities were specified as 2.0W/m²/100 lux.

To meet these specifications VOS Group Engineers chose the Enviro luminaire in a 1x28W lamp configuration. The decision to utilise this particular luminaire was based on a number of key factors, the luminaires performance, and equally the cost effectiveness of the Enviro.

The ‘perfo’ basket and indirect/direct design of the fitting provided the feeling of space over the large floor plan and assisted in preventing the cavernous effect that can be an unwelcome consequence of using a generic low-brightness louvred lighting option. Selecting a luminaire with a large luminous opening complements the overall feeling of space and offsets the effect of the dark carpet.

The new Gold Coast University Hospital is the largest public health infrastructure project currently underway in Australia. The $1.76 billion project, due for completion in 2012, will deliver a brand new 750-bed hospital and health services for residents on the Gold Coast.

Located on the corner of Parklands Drive and Olsen Avenue, Southport, the hospital will also be one of Queensland’s largest clinical teaching and research facilities, providing specialised health services that meet the needs of patients and the learning requirements of students.

Following some outstanding work from the Eagle Lighting Australia team in Brisbane, ELA was able to secure an order for this multi-million dollar health project in Queensland. Our manufacturing facility will be working hard in the coming months to supply an assortment of Cleanroom, Flexitroffer, Multifive, and Indigo luminaires onto this project.

ELA’s Cleanroom luminaire was selected based on a number of attributes including its strength of design and versatility. Cleanrooms IP rating and high LOR were an instrumental factor in ensuring cost-savings over the entire lifecycle.

LED luminaires are an ideal replacement for both downlights and T5 solutions.

In public environments, such as offices and schools, LED technology has previously only been used for more decorative-style lighting – accent lighting or colour-shifting effects. In these contexts, LED has replaced previous low-voltage halogen light sources. Now LED technology has achieved sufficient quality, energy efficiency and life span to surpass traditional solutions for general lighting as well.

LED luminaires can replace both downlights and previous T5 applications in places such as corridors, offices, entry halls and conference facilities. New reflector and anti-glare technology allow the luminaires to make use of the huge light flows offered by LED while still making it comfortable for people to be in the room. Examples include Fagerhult’s downlight series Pleiad G3 and the recessed general lighting system Multilume Flat.

In addition to general and accent lighting, LED technology also has a place in specific environments. LED is often the preferable light source for works of art, museum artefacts or food products, as the light does not contain UV or IR radiation that can cause degradation.

Regardless of environment, LED is superior in contexts where you want to save on labour and expenses associated with maintenance.

Luminaire design also benefits from LED technology, in particular because of the small dimensions of the modules. Because an LED luminaire is not limited by the shape of the light source and does not require a certain volume for a fluorescent tube, designers have unlimited freedom to create exciting new designs.

With modern technology, an LED luminaire developed specifically for a given purpose can replace several luminaire types with traditional light sources – from downlights with low-voltage and halogen light sources to general lighting with T5 fluorescent tubes. The LED solution retains or improves the energy efficiency – but the goal should also be to maintain control over visual comfort and direction. This is particularly important in connection with work-related facilities that are extra sensitive to glare, for example offices.

However, it is clear that greater efficiency, lower prices and better applications of the technology will contribute to steadily growing demand for LED luminaires for public environments. It is not unreasonable to assume that LED lighting will dominate sales in ten years or so.

One phase in Fagerhult’s further development of this technology is research into how people perceive LED lighting. Indications that LED light is perceived as brighter than traditional light sources at the same power levels lead to thoughts about opportunities for even more energy savings.

The company is also working to develop even more applications for general and work space lighting, which can replace luminaires with T5 fluorescent tubes. A joint standardisation project called Zhaga is under way in the lighting industry. The aim is to develop common product standards for physical dimensions and connections to electrical, photometric and thermal product standards. The project is mainly about making it easier to replace LED modules and electrical ballasts. The first standardised modules are expected to be available in 2011.

Greater efficiency, lower prices and better applications of the technology will contribute to steadily growing demand for LED.

Many factors affect the light quality of LED. colour temperature, colour rendition and colour quality affect both how the light works and how it is perceived. Although the technological

properties of LED’s and traditional light sources are not directly comparable, the user’s demands for how the light from a good luminaire should behave, remains unchanged.

colour rendition of LED’s is normally given as a colour Rendering Index (cRI) or Ra. The Ra scale is from 1 to 100 and measures the capacity of the light source to render colours. A high Ra often produces a somewhat lower efficiency so an assessment must be made around what is more critical to the project.

The colour Rendering Index (cRI) is given as an average value (Ra) across 8 or 14 colours. An 8 scale test features pastel colours and is a poor indicator of colour rendering ability, particularly saturated colour. A cRI (14) test is preferred, however, a cRI (14) test can still see an LED rendering thirteen colours well but not so good at the fourteenth. The diagram below is a good example where, despite the LED rendering red poorly, it still scores a cRI (8) of 85 and a cRI (14) of 80. Because of these flaws in the cRI system, there are currently other systems of measurement under investigation. One such system is the colour Quality System (cQS) where scores are still given out of 100 but the colours used as a reference are all saturated and the formula to derive at the figure more detailed.

Whilst colour rendition will vary among different LEDs, it is directly linked to the spectral distribution of the LED. Therefore, an analysis of the spectral distribution can give us more information about the LED’s ability to reproduce colours. The more a particular colour is present in the spectral distribution, the better the LED at rendering that colour. It is also worth noting that colour rendition can differ between a new LED and one that has been in use for several thousand hours.

the light quality of ledscOLOUR TEMPERATURE & QUALITy

ansi white

The colour temperature of a white light source is given in Kelvin (K). Originally, Kelvin was a measure of the colour of a heated (and therefore glowing) black body.

For lamps with a filament, this measure is easy to apply, as the colour temperature in Kelvin is the same as the actual temperature of the filament. For light sources with no filament– such as fluorescent tubes, gas discharge lamps and LEDs – we must calculate a correlated colour temperature (ccT) in Kelvin.

colour temperature may vary from one manufacturer to another, even if they report the same measurement. In addition, the colour temperature of an LED can change over time, which means that the value after several thousand hours of use will not be the same as that of a new LED- see the chromaticity section for more information.

LED manufacturers sort their products into ‘bins’ according to their performance. As highlighted on the ANSI standard binning chart diagram, there are 16 bins around 3500K.

A 3500K LED taken from the top left quadrant will appear greenish when compared to one from the bottom right quadrant that will have a pinkish hue. Interestingly, we often see manufacturers using LED’s with a greenish hue as these are often more efficient.

Even though there is an ASNI standard, two opposite corners within a bin can also appear to be different. For this reason, many manufactures will sub categories into smaller bins again to improve the colour consistency. The fewer bins your LEDs are selected from, the more stable the quality of the product.

One of the emerging trends to deal with colour temperature issues is remote phosphor technology. By using naturally grown blue LEDs and mixing the light in a chamber before it reaches the phosphor, manufacturers can produce LEDs of consistent colour.

This reduces many of the issues of colour shift over time, that are associated with traditional phosphor covered LED’s, there are also constant tuning LED solutions, where constant feedback

from the LED board sees the LEDs adjusted accordingly to keep the colour temperature stable, not just initially, but for the life of the LED board. This type of solution does require the use of additional built in electronic components, however, and hence can be prone to higher failure rates.

Remember, there is no substitute for looking at the LED itself and making your own assessment of it’s colour temperature and colour quality.

chromaticity needs to be considered when the LED colour is easily referenced. For instance, lighting a white surface, or placing an LED strip very close to a white wall.

The chromaticity of an LED product – that is, the degree of deviation of its colour point – can be defined in MacAdam ellipses in Standard Deviation of colour Matching (SDcM) as per the cIE 1964 standard.

The MacAdam system originates from the United States and ranks colour consistency on a scale of 0 to 10. The image to the right shows what MacAdam ellipses look like at 3000K. The image below shows what value variation that equates to in terms of colour temperature and chromaticity co-ordinates.

One other consideration is how the colour quality of a product changes throughout its lifespan. Most SDcM values are initial values and the quality of the LED plays a huge part in how much deviation will be experienced over the life of the LED.

Is the lifetime data from the luminaire itself, not the LED?

Does the Lamp Lumen Maintenance Factor being employed in the design corresponds to the quoted life of the LED luminaire?

Are adequate maintenance documents in place to ensure the LEDs are replaced at the end of life (when the lumens fall below what the project requires)?

An LED luminaire can have a very long life span – assuming that it is well-designed and has high-quality components. An LED very rarely breaks although, as with any electronic products, there is a normal failure rate. Rather than breaking, an LED generates reduced light flow over time. Life expectancy is normally defined as the point in time when the lumen output from the LED goes down to 70% of the initial value. 70%, or 30% depreciation, is the normal point where the human eye will start to notice a difference in the lighting levels.

The life span is expressed as L70, followed by the number of hours, i.e. L70 32,000 h. The expected life span is affected by several factors including the choice of LED (manufacturer and type), how hard the chosen LED is run and the luminaires ability to manage the thermal properties of the LED.

It is important to note that at the point in time when an LED luminaire does reach its rated life the LED will not stop working; it will just continue to depreciate in output. For this reason, maintenance and re-lamping periods should be carefully considered and stated. In some instances, it may make sense to quote a shorter maintenance period. For instance, retail fit-outs often get upgraded every 5 to 8 years, we can choose to run the LED harder to get more efficiency and we can also choose a shorter lifetime, enabling us to use a different lumen depreciation, meaning we use less luminaires to achieve our desired lighting levels.

To give an example, if we design with 50,000 hours in mind with the LED in the diagram, we must apply a 0.7 lamp lumen maintenance factor to our design - L70 50,000h. However, if we decided we only required 42,000 hours for our particular project we could use a 0.9 LLMF and state our design as L90 42,000h. This method can only be employed where the luminaire manufactures life time data is available, and is tested to LM-79 standards.

Whatever the stated life and maintenance, we must remember the LED is only one part of the equation. LED drivers and other electronics parts are still commonly rated

This section contains a brief summary of the most common light sources contained within this catalogue. The data has been complied from the light source manufacturers catalogues and, consequentially, may vary and be subject to change.

cOMPAcT FLUOREScENT LAMPS

compact fluorescent lamps Tc-L/FSD – Powerful compact fluorescent lamp that allows small luminaires to offer high light outputs. The advantages are: high luminous efficacy, good colour reproduction at several colour temperatures, extended lamp life and dimming options etc.

compact fluorescent lamps FSD/FSQ/FSM/FSS – These are efficient compact fluorescent lamps with 2, 4 or 6 limbs and a 2D design with outputs of up to 120W. These light sources have many advantages such as high luminous efficacy, good colour rendering at several colour temperatures, extended lamp life and dimming options. FSM lamps are also available in different geometric shapes and design characteristics. Amalgam lamps are recommended as they give higher luminous efficacy at high ambient temperatures. Generally there is a higher ambient temperature in small luminaires such as downlights. One limitation with the amalgam lamps is that it takes approximately 5 minutes before reaching full luminous flux. Lamps without amalgam are more suited to outdoor installations as they ignite better and give more light at low temperatures.

FLUOREScENT LAMPS

Fluorescent lamps T5 FDH – These fluorescent lamps Ø=16 mm are adapted in length to fit 600 mm modular ceilings. The lamps are available in two different designs, HE (High Efficacy) with maximum luminous efficacy or HO (High Output) with maximum luminous flux. All outputs in the HE range have the same fluorescent lamp luminance while it varies in the HO range. The fluorescent lamp is designed to give maximum luminous efficacy at an approximate ambient temperature of 35 °c, which corresponds to the normal temperature of an IP 20 luminaire. Always powered by HF-ballasts, they can also be dimmed using dimmable HF-ballasts. (Further information about T5 luminaires and lighting systems can be found in the Technical Information chapter.)

circular fluorescent lamps T5 Fc – Fluorescent lamp Ø=16 mm in three standard sizes and four outputs. Unlike the normal T5 fluorescent lamps, these lamps are designed for an ambient temperature of 25 °c. The lamps are always powered by HF-ballasts.

Fluorescent lamps T8 FD – These Ø=26 fluorescent lamps have a high luminous efficacy, good colour reproduction, several colour temperatures, long lamp life and they can be dimmed.

HALOGEN LAMPS

Halogen lamps 12 V – Available in many different designs and outputs they have many good characteristics, for example, excellent colour reproduction, relatively inexpensive, long lamp life and can be dimmed. All halogen lamps up to 50 W currently used/sold by Fagerhult are of a low pressure type and in UV-block designs. One disadvantage is a relatively poor energy efficiency.

Halogen lamps 240 V – These halogen lamps have the same advantages as normal incandescent lamps, but are more efficient and have a longer lamp life.

Available in outputs up to 250 W. Once again one disadvantage is relatively poor energy efficiency.

METAL HALOGEN LAMPS

Metal halogen lamps MT/MR/MD 35–150 W – These light sources (Mastercolour) are equipped with a ceramic arc tube, which results in a colour temperature shift of less than ±200 K. The light source’s white ‘sparkling light is very similar to the 12 V halogen lamps but offers numerous benefits such as energy efficiency and long lamp life. MT-lamps are in UV-block design. Luminaires with explosion protective glass are required for the MT light source. MR-lamps have an integrated reflector available with different distribution angles and dimensions as well as built-in protective glass.

At the time of printing individual models and certain outputs of metal halogen lamps are available in dimmable versions. These are not presented in the catalogue.

Limitations: Metal halogen lamps cannot generally be dimmed. They have an ignition time of 2–3 minutes. Restart of hot lamps takes up to 15 minutes.

HIGH PRESSURE SODIUM LAMPS

‘White Son’, SDW-T (35–100 W) – The lamp has a colour temperature that lies close to the light from an incandescent lamp and reproduces most colours in an excellent manner. Other advantages are high efficiency and long lamp life.

Limitations: These high pressure sodium lamps cannot be dimmed. They have an ignition time of approx. 4 minutes and the restart of a hot lamp is up to 2 minutes.

Other high pressure sodium lamps normally have a high luminous efficacy in combination with a low colour rendering index.

Limitations: As above.

LUMINOUS EFFIcAcy

A light source’s luminous efficacy is the relation between its luminous flux and the electrical power used. The luminous efficacy is established for the light source or for the system (light source and ballast). The unit for luminous efficacy is lm/W. Note that the documented value for the luminous efficacy in the tables on the following pages applies to the light source and does not take ballast losses into consideration.

AVERAGE MORTALITy RATE

The number of burning hours after which half of a large number of controlled light sources have extinguished. Used for incandescent and halogen lamps.

80 % SERVIcE MORTALITy RATE

The time after which 80 % of the lighting installation’s original luminous flux remains. The depreciation in luminous flux depends on the reduction in light output as well as spent light sources.

GENERAL cOLOUR RENDERING INDEx, RA

colour rendering is a measurement of the light source’s ability to correctly render eight test colours in relation to a fixed reference light. The Ra-index for indoor lighting ought to be above 80 and for good colour rendering above 90. The value for maximum colour rendering is defined as 100.

cOLOUR TEMPERATURE, K

The colour temperature denotes the light source’s colour appearance and varies in the range 2000–7400 K. 3500–4000 K is considered to be neutral white. colour temperature lower than 3500 K is experienced as warm and colour temperatures higher than 4000 K are experienced as cold. Equivalent colour temperatures are stated for fluorescent lamps and discharge lamps.

cOLOUR DESIGNATION

Light source manufacturers state the light source’s colour properties using a international colour designation consisting of three digits. The first digit represents the light source’s colour rendering and the last two digits stem from the colour temperature in Kelvin, formed by the colour temperature being divided by 100. A light source with the colour designation 830 has a general colour reproduction index of between 80–89 and a colour temperature of 3000 K.

I=Φ/ω Luminous intensity is the intensity in a determined direction. Definition: Luminous flux per solid angle (ω). Definition: Luminous flux per solid angel (ω)

illuminance E(lx)

Lux (lm/m²)

Illuminance refers to the luminous flux that hits a specific surface. Definition: Luminous flux per unit area (m²).

luminance(luminous intensity)

L (cd/m²) L=I/A(L=I/Acosα)

This is defined as the luminous intensity in a specific direction from a surface of a light source, luminaire or lit surface, divided by the projected area.

luminous flux Φ lumen (lm)

Φ=I/ω Luminous flux refers to the total amount of light emitted from a light source. It is defined as the amount of light emitted when the light source’s radiant luminous flux, is evaluated against the eyes sensitivity in daylight (Vλ-curve according to CIE).

design lumen ΦB lumen Refers to the light source’s luminous flux that is emitted at an ambient temperature of 25°C. The quoted luminous flux may differ from the light source’s maximum luminous flux. (For example T5 fluorescent lamp).

light output ratio(LOR)

ηA Ratio between the total flux from the luminaire, measured under specified practical conditions with its own light sources and equipment, and the total individual luminous flux from the same light sources operating outside the luminaire using the same equipment, under specified conditions.

design efficiency ηB The design efficiency of the luminaire is used in lighting calculations together with the design lumen for the light source. The design efficiency includes the correction for BLF when measuring the luminaire and light source in an ambient temperature of 25°C. ηB = ηmeasured x BLF.

Ballast lumen factor BLF – – Defines the luminous flux from a light source. It is measured with either a commercial ballast or a reference ballast, at an ambient temperature of 25°C.

colour temperature – kelvin (K) CIE 17.4 The colour temperature is defined using absolute temperature. (0 K = -273.15 °C or 0 °C = +273.15 K)

colour reproduction index Ra Ra-index CIE 17.4 Is the measurement of a light source’s ability to reproduce colour compared to a reference light source at a predetermined colour temperature. An Ra index is used for graduation, which according to CIE, can be at the most 100 and shall for lighting workplaces be a minimum of 80.

luminous efficacy – light source

H (lm/W) η=Φ/P The luminous efficacy from a light source can be defined as the relationship between the luminous flux emitted by a light source and the electrical output it consumes. Luminous efficacy can also be described as a measurement of light source efficiency.

luminous efficacy – system(light source + ballast)

H (lm/W) η=Φ/P The system luminous efficacy from a light source can be defined as the relationship between the luminous flux emitted by a light source and the electrical output it consumes including ballast losses.

glare CIE- 31,112, 117

Is a visual impairment caused by the extreme contrast or inappropriate distribution of luminance levels. Glare is normally subdivided into: Discomfort glare UGR/NB and Disability glare TI/GR.

uniformity– illuminance– luminance

Emin/EaveLmin/Lave

Ratio between the lowest value and the average value of brightness on a specific surface unless otherwise stated.

luminaire luminance – – The average luminance of a luminaire’s luminous parts measured and/or calculated in the C-plane at 15° intervals starting at 0°, and elevation angles (γ) of 65°, 75° and 85°.

shielding angle for luminaire’s light source

– – The angle between the horizontal plane and the first line of sight at which any part of the luminaires light source becomes directly visible.

cut-off angle for luminaires

– – Angle, measured upwards from nadir, between the vertical axis and the first line of vision at which the light sources and surfaces with high luminance are not visible.

solid angle ω steradian (sr)

ω=A/r² The relationship between the cut out area A on a sphere caused by a beam of light on its surfaceand the square of the spheres radius r.

mean mortality rate - for light sources

– hour (h) – Mean mortality rate is the average life span of a light source and is defined as the time after which 50 % of a large number of controlled light sources have failed (Incandescent lamps, halogen lamps and fluorescent lamps).

service mortality rate– for light sources

– hour (h) – The service mortality rate is defined as the point at which 80 % of the lighting installation’s original luminous flux remains. The depreciation in luminous flux depends on the reduced luminous flux and spent light sources.

economic mortality rate – for light sources

– hour (h) – The economic mortality rate is defined as the point at which 70 % of the lighting installation’s original luminous flux remains. The depreciation in luminous flux depends on the reduced luminous flux and spent light sources.

light PlanningLIGHT MEASUREMENT

The luminaire’s light distribution is measured on several c-planes around the luminaire, at intervals of at least 15°. First measurement plane (c=0°) is across the lamps’ longitudinal axis. γ-angles several angles are measured, at least every 5 degrees (see figure).

LIGHT DISTRIBUTION cURVE

The light distribution curve drawn in a polar diagram denotes the luminaire’s luminous intensity in different directions as a function of viewing angle in one or more planes. It is usually represented by an unbroken line that indicates the light distribution perpendicular to the light source’s longitudinal axis and with a dashed line that indicates the light distribution in direction of the longitudinal axis. The values of the light distribution curves are scaled to correspond to 1000 lm from the light source (cd/1000 lm, cd/ klm). This is why it is often possible to show luminaires with different outputs on a common polar diagram.

ISOLUx DIAGRAM

The diagram shows, using curves (or scales) a predefined area, inside which the horizontal illuminance exceeds the curve’s lux value. The position of the luminaire is usually indicated on the diagram. Alternatively, the isolux diagram can be represented by a 3D diagram, which is best suited for showing the uniformity of the lighting installation. The calculation points’ illuminance values can be introduced onto the premises’ layout drawing and the results given in table form. The results are available in all the above mentioned forms in DIALux.

Luminaires are given an IP-classification. The IP-classification consists of a two digit code that describes the degree of protection against solid objects as well as moisture and water. Standard luminaires will have an IP classification of IP 20 or higher.

The table below describes respective IP-classifications. The IP-class is stated in plain text on the luminaire’s label.

Symbols as set out below can also be used in combination with the text. Note that IP 20 luminaires do not need to be marked. IP is an abbreviation of Ingress Protection.

Indicates the luminaire is not suitable to be covered with thermally insulating material.

Denotes the luminaire’s IP classification. ip20 : Protected against solid objects up to 12 mm, e.g. persons fingers.
