ndiGo is built for people with things to do, places to be, people to see - who don't want to waste time, money or energy in the

process. We continuously focus onkeeping costs low and a high frequency of flights while striving to fulfil our simple brand message of providing “low fares, on-time flights and a hassle-free experience” to our passengers. We commenced operations in August 2006 with a single aircraft, and have grown our fleet to 100 aircraft. We have a young fleet and the average age of our aircraft was 3.26 years. IndiGo has:

IndiGo stands for three things – ontime, courteous

and hassle free; and low fares.

These values are more internal to us before we

implement them externally.

The definition of hassle free has to be in the wider

sense of the world. Therefore, right from the very

beginning when we were a fledgling start up to this

day when we are the country’s largest and most suc-

cessful airline we have always been acutely aware of

our responsibilities towards the community that we

serve.

We may not be able to change the world, but we

have the power to change lives. Not just our own

lives but the lives of our families, colleagues and customers. IndiGo, too, as an organization has the power

to make a change in the country as well as the communities we serve.

IndiGoReach is an expansion of our Power to Make A Change.

”We firmly believe that our role is far above and beyond our job.

At IndiGo, Corporate Social Responsibility is

synonymous to shared values, responsible business

and social activities. The government guideline of

utilizing 2% companies profit is only a mandate; CSR

is much beyond the companies ACT. Any CSR

project that we take up, we ensure that it is able to

make a social, economic impact, and have an effect

on the gender, caste and yield in the rural area

where we intervene. A holistic approach is what

helps attain.

Sustainability in any project. IndiGoReach is the

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program of

IndiGo. Much before the companies Act, IndiGo was

actively involved in various CSR initiatives. We truly believe that it’s not the funds, but intention and

actions that go a long way. Our CSR initiatives have always provided a platform to the employees to

volunteer. We also have a philosophy of iServe that allows each employee to dedicate 3 working days

towards a CSR initiative that they would like to volunteer for.

Our focus towards Children & Education, Women Empowerment and Environment is reflected in our

commitment towards projects like 6E Scholar, IRoar, and Girl Power Initiative. IndiGoReach brings us

together as a team to our shared values & to contribute towards a better tomorrow. It gives our

employees a platform to be able to contribute towards the society. The volunteering initiatives planned

for the new employees who join the company give them a flavor of the program right in the beginning. A

lot of our employees have volunteered to be a part of these activities on regular basis and they form the

CSR Core Group at IndiGo.

OS Children’s Village works on the principle of providing family based care for parentless and

abandoned children in India. It has a unique program, which provides a family with Mother

and siblings to each child. Each Village has 12- 15 homes and each home has a mother with

ten children.

The family environment that SOS provides gives each child a

solid foundation on which to build their lives. Within a family

each child is protected and enjoys a sense of belonging. Here,

children learn values, share responsibilities and form life-long

relationships.

IndiGo has adopted one family home at SOS Village,

Faridabad. The home has a mother and 10 children- 9 girls

and two boy. The home is named ALNA. Our support to the

family home aims to provide all the basic facilities like food,

clothing, shelter, medication, education, extra- curricular

activities, capacity building workshops for all the 10 children.

Education and over all development of the children is given

priority over all other matters. Health is also taken care of and

the children have a medical check- up every 6 months.

IndiGo is provided with a progress report of the children once

in 6 months. The report shows their academic progress,

medical reports, and development planning by SOS. The village

director arranges for special tuitions for children who are found

to be weak in a particular subject. A detailed expense sheet is

also shared with IndiGo to maintain transparency.

All the children are a part of IndiGo family and we like to

keep interacting with them on regular basis. We invite the

children to our office to be a part of festival celebration. They

celebrated Diwali with us at our office and we all had a great

time. On Holi, IndiGo team visited the NGO to give Holi gifts

rd Child Campaign of SOS children’s Village provides an opportunity to adopt a child and

support their education, health and well- being. The annual sponsorship fee for supporting each

child is Rs. 7800. The sponsors are provided with a detailed profile of the child and annual

progress report is also shared.

IndiGoReach has joined with SOS to support this campaign and provided this beautiful opportunity to all

our employees to adopt a child. Each time an employee adopts a child, IndiGo shares half the sponsorship

fee with the employee. So far, 180 employees have adopted 200 employees as a part of the Campaign.

This is an ongoing campaign where employees can contribute and join the campaign all around the year.

n the basis of the 2011 census, there were about 360 million children in the age group of

0-14 years. In a standard IQ test, about 7.2 million of these would qualify in the top 2

percentile. These children can be said to have genius level intelligence. In the normal

course, the genius of about 5 million of these, who belong to the underprivileged strata

of society, is likely to remain un-recognized and under-utilized.

Mensa India is working towards the objective of identifying

and mentoring as many of these underprivileged geniuses

and nurturing them towards a bright future. Internationally

recognized IQ tests are given to underprivileged rural

children and those who qualify in the top 2 percentile, as

per Mensa’s worldwide norms, are made a part of their Gifted

child nurturing program. The psycho -profile test is also

conducted which helps identify strengths and weaknesses

and help make nurturing more personalized and focused.

The aptitude test helps identify the kind of vocations they

are likely to excel at. This will be supplemented by individual

counseling.

The selected children are from Class V- VII and Mensa

nurtures them till they graduate and get a job.

To mark the delivery of our 100th aircraft, we have taken

up sponsorship of 100 underprivileged gifted children with

Mensa India. IQ tests were conducted amongst

various schools in Delhi NCR to identify the 100 6e Scholars.

6E Mentorship Program - Mensa India and IndiGo have identified these 100 6E Scholars and we would like

to assign mentors from our IndiGo family for each of these scholars. To enable this, we will be starting the

6E Mentorship Program and give our employees a change to make a difference to the future of a child.

These mentors will be responsible for providing guidance and working closely to offer guidance, share

values and life experiences. The mentors could be helpful in identifying their interest areas and help them

shape a better career for themselves.

andhan was set up to meet the cardinal goals of poverty alleviation and women empowerment.

Starting its journey primarily with microfinance, Bandhan was however quick to realize the

limitations of microfinance in offering holistic panacea in the lives of poor. Bandhan’s model of

poverty alleviation is based on carefully calibrated blending of credit plus with microfinance, the

reason why Bandhan gravitated towards development interventions in 2006. Today there is an entire suite

of development programs which are expected to bring about holistic transformation in the

underprivileged community.

Bandhan Education Program

IPre-primary and non-formal primary schools

encourage a diverse age group of underprivileged

children to begin and sustain academics amidst a

congenial environment.

Bandhan has adopted a unique, low cost, innovative

model to ensure that underprivileged children are able

to receive quality education, as it is their right

according to the Indian Constitution.

Bandhan provide the deprived children with a relaxed

joyful atmosphere to begin and continue their

education. An edutainment approach is adopted

whereby children are provided free education.

There is no homework and no long vacations.

Complimentary books, pencils, slates etc. are provided

to each student.

Page 19: Download CSR Report 2014-15

IndiGo has joined hands with Bandhan in this noble cause. We

will be building 400 new schools to expand the reach of this

initiative. IndiGo with the help of Bandhan will be starting 200

schools in Bihar & Jharkhand, 200 schools in Assam and West

Bengal.

The program also aims to ensure 100% attendance of

students enrolled in these schools and reduce their

dependence on private tutors.

The program aims to reach out to non – school - going

and drop out children from economically constrained

families with special focus on the girl child.

Women from the local community are absorbed as

‘para professional teachers’.

IRoarndiGoReach is working closely with Corbett Tiger Reserve, Jim Corbett to support the villages in

the periphery of the forest. We have planned various initiatives to work towards providing better

education to the children, empowerment of the women and creating livelihood opportunities, and

healthy and safe environment to stay in.

IndiGo support the needs of the Junior and Senior school chil-

dren at Amdanda & Dhela village by providing stationary and

other necessary requirements of the children- pedestal fans,

solar water heaters, CFL’s, sports equipment’s, umbrellas. We

also support the forest outposts by providing first aid kits, sani-

tation kits, solar lamp posts, mosquito nets, shoes, ruck sacks,

high power torches, and caps.

The next phase includes building biogas plants, library for the

senior school, improving the infrastructure and facilities for

primary schools and starting a school of art for the children. We

are also in the process of launching a program to provide skill

trainings to the people of the villages and help increase the

scope for livelihood opportunities. This will also involve special

focus on the women and their empowerment.

IndiGo is supporting Genesis Foundation - a Not for

roviding employment opportunities and enabling the under-privileged youth towards a

sustainable employment program has topped the agenda of societal interventions at IndiGo.

We believe that imparting skills and enabling the youth employability would help in uplifting

standard of living amongst their community and would make them better citizens.

The IndiGoReach initiatives work towards providing structured trainings to these children on skills like

interview skills, resume writing skills, knowledge about the

industry and different other departments in different compa-

nies to enable them to get employability.

We even provide employment opportunities to these youth

by conducting interview at the NGO’s post our trainings, to

recruit under any department, depending on the candidate’s

caliber and aptitude.

These trainings help them take up a job with IndiGo, or any

other company they aspire to join thus creating a sustainable

structure to provide employment.

Knowledge sharing sessions have been conducted at

different centers of various NGO’s like SOS , The Hope

Akansha became an integral part of SOS family when she was barely 2 years old. She was

average in studies but was always encouraged by her SOS mother and the village staff to

participate in various events

organized in school and SOS Village Greenfields. These opportunities gave her confidence to

pursue her dreams to become an Air Hostess or joining

hospitality industry. Her professional degree, positive attitude towards life and winning smile

gave her a chance at her dream job.

She has been hired by IndiGo as a Cabin Attendant and is enjoying flying with us.

“Believe in yourself an work towards it. When I went for the interview I kept repeating in my

mind that I am most suitable for this job and also really worked hard to crack the interview.

Credit goes to my SOS mother, Education Co- worker and my brother and sisters.” said Akan-

sha after clearing her final round of interview.

n order to further our endeavor towards providing

ndiGo has partnered with the Fair Climate Network (FCN), a consortium of NGOs committed to

promoting simple measures that improve rural livelihoods and reduce carbon pollution.

Through this partnership, IndiGo along with its own contribution of funds will enable its flyers to

voluntarily contribute Rs. 100 (per PNR) towards this cause. The revenue generated through this

voluntary contribution along with the contribution made by IndiGo will be used to support the

implementation of climate friendly technologies like constructing domes-tic biogas units for poor

women, providing fuel efficient woodstoves, installing photovoltaic lamps in un-electrified homes, setting

up drinking water purification systems, under-taking agro-forestry, sustainable and profitable farming

practices, etc.

This partnership has been facilitated by Environmental Defence Fund (EDF), a science and economics

based global NGO that harnesses the power of policy frameworks and markets to deliver sound

environmental outcomes. This groundbreaking partnership will create a more positive economic & health

impact for individuals and families in six states across rural India. For example, cleaner burning stoves

funded by the project will improve indoor air quality and have a direct impact on the household health.

IndiGo is currently working towards 5000 biogas units in Chittoor District and 2500 in Anantapur District

of Andhra Pradesh. Till date we have 604 commissioned units of biogas plants with 1,171 CER’s

generated.

B. Devi is a 45 year old farmer from Diguva

Maddikuppam Village in Chittor district, Andhra

Pradesh. She with her husband and four children stay

in their one room house. She used to boil water and

cook food on 2 mud stoves. The mud stoves are

highly ineffective in rainy season when the branches

are wet and hence expel more smoke. This daily

drudgery required about 300 kgs of fuel wood prune

from a forest area which is about 5 km. from their

house. This all changes when Cross FCN Biogas unit

was constructed near her house few months back.

Now, neither she nor her husband have to spend 4

days in a month to collect fuel.

Recycle Reuse & Repeat - taking another step towards the green by Greenobin tie – upWe are working with Greenobin where we give all our used waste paper, inflight magazines, or any other

scrap paper from Delhi airport and corporate office to Greenobin. They recycle it into fresh paper and give

us reward points that let us buy and stock the recycled paper in our offices, saving even more trees. For

each kg, we earn reward points which we will reimburse against stationary items made of recycle paper.

As a leading airline, IndiGo takes any environmental impact of its operations very seriously. IndiGo

believes that it has the obligation to care for and protect the environment in which it operates.

Based on the premise that the most effective way to minimize aviation emissions is to minimize the

amount of fuel used in aircraft operations, much of our effort at benefitting the environment is

focused on reducing fuel consumption. The reduced airline operating cost as a result of lower fuel

burn is an added advantage.

The aircrafts we fly are designed to make our operations environment friendly:

Being a Change Agent by introducing new processes to save fuel

CSRREPORT14-15

Page 28: Download CSR Report 2014-15

Young FleetIndiGo has IAE V2527-A5 Select One Engines on its current fleet.

Sharklet Aircraft

This engine has 1% less fuel consumption than traditional High Bypass Turbofan engines, making it the

greenest in its class, as measured by its emissions and noise profiles.

Since the emission of CO2 gas is directly related to fuel burn, there is a direct correlation between the

reduction in fuel burn and lower CO2 gas emissions.

The V2500 also exhibits the lowest total emissions profile when considering the collective emission

constituents and meets the Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection - CAEP/6 standards on NOx

emissions.

Wonder about those shark fin structure protracted on the wing as you gaze through the window glass,

well those are called “SHARKLETS”; cognomen given in structural resemblance to shark fins.

These sharklets in effect decreases fuel consumption compared to A320 aircraft equipped with standard

wingtips because of better aerodynamics and augmenting range from 1% to 4% based on stage length.

We use Sharklet Aircraft for all long Sectors which results in close to 4 % fuel savings on those flights.

EcoPower Wash for enginesEngine water wash using water pumps is a conventional method used for improving the engine efficiency.

In this, while the engine is motoring (rotating without fuel or ignition introduced), water is injected

through the engine inlet and comes out of the exhaust. This process results in improvement in

performance of the engines as it results in lower exhaust gas temperatures and reduction in fuel

.26

CSRREPORT14-15

consumption. IndiGo is the only private scheduled operator in India which has done additional

investment in implementing the latest Pratt and Whitney specialized method for gas path cleaning of

engines by self-contained and eco- friendly equipment using atomised hot demineralised water.

IndiGo performs this EcoPower wash at regular fixed intervals on all engines in the fleet.

Our fleet renewal programme We are investing in fuel efficient aircraft best suited to our low-cost operational model. We have ordered

430 Airbus A320neo - “new engine option” - aircraft which incorporate many industry leading

innovations, including the latest generation engines and large Sharklet wing-tip devices, which together

deliver 15 percent in fuel savings compared to current aircraft flying in the world, and 17 per cent by

2020.

Electronic Flight Bag (EFB)On 15th April 2015, IndiGo became the first Indian airline to introduce Electronic Flight Bags (EFBs) across

its entire fleet.

Information contained on two iPads replaces 45 kg of paper manuals currently on board in each cockpit,

resulting in enhanced safety, ease of use, and more accuracy in performance calculations. Electronic

information will replace 24,000 pages of paper currently on board in each of our cockpits, paper that

constantly needs to be replaced with more paper with each update or revision in information.

In addition to this, we have taken up few innovative measures in our operations that make our flights environment friendly:

.27

CSRREPORT14-15

Page 30: Download CSR Report 2014-15

Single Engine Taxi (SET In/SET Out)IndiGo encourages Pilots to do Single engine Taxi, both during departure, and after landing at all

aerodromes, subject to operational considerations (this is applicable if departure delays or long taxi

times are expected). This is perfectly safe, reduces emissions and brake wear, and is duly approved by

DGCA.

Fuel saving on SET-Out is approx. 3 kg. per min. SET for 10 Minutes, CO2 Production is reduced by 110

Kg.

Usage of Ground Power Unit (GPU) instead of Auxiliary Power Unit(APU) installed on the AircraftGround power is usually significantly cheaper per hour than the on-board APU (when considering both

fuel and maintenance costs). In 5 minutes the APU would produce around 35 KGs of CO2.

Usage of GPU on Ground instead of APU helps reducing APU Fuel Burn & enhances APU Life.

Optimum Speed for FlightsIndiGo operates all its aircraft at optimised speeds which means that climb, cruise and descent speeds

for each flight are optimised through a software programme which considers the optimal ratio between

unit cost of time and unit cost of fuel and results in the most efficient speeds to be flown. Since these

inputs of cost of fuel and cost of time may vary, this software allows us to modify our speed profiles to

continuously remain most efficient.

.28

CSRREPORT14-15

Page 31: Download CSR Report 2014-15

Optimum Take-off & Landing ConfigurationDuring takeoff & landing, using lower flap settings when operationally feasible results in substantial

benefits, because, for a given departure, it produces the least drag, and so gives the lowest fuel burn, the

lowest noise and best flight profile.

RNP Approaches (Required Navigation Performance)RNP Approaches are developed by taking advantage on on-board navigational equipment to develop

instrument landing procedures that allow straight or even curved paths based on better navigation

accuracy (especially due to GPS/satellite positioning). The resulting shorter path brings great benefits

which results in reduced time and fuel burn

IndiGo was the first airline in India to conduct trials with the Airports Authority of India, DGCA, and

QuoVadis (an Airbus subsidiary) to develop RNP approaches in India. After procedure development, we

were the first airline to demonstrate an RNP Approach at Kochi International Airport on December 08,

2010. The savings at Kochi are approximately 400 Kg less fuel burn and 1260 Kg reduction in greenhouse

gas emissions per landing at Kochi. Savings are expected wherever this procedure is developed and

used, and will vary by airport and procedure design.

On June 23, 2012, we were the first airline to conduct an RNP approach and landing at Kochi in regular

airline operations. IndiGo was the first carrier in India authorized to implement this effective, fuel-saving

practice.

Reducing Thrust Reduction HeightAfter an aircraft takes off from the runway, it usually ascends at a constant speed with the flaps extended

until it reaches a certain height. As it takes high power to take-off, when the aircraft reaches an initial

target height, the engines power is reduced to a lower power setting for the rest of the flight.

IndiGo has opted to reduce power at a lower height than is in vogue (while fully complying with the

required climb gradients and all regulations) thus resulting in lower fuel burn and carbon emissions.

Apart from the innovation in flight operations, we have incorporated few more minor changes that have helped in reducing fuel burn considerable, thus making our flights eco friendly

Approximate weight reduction of 760Kgs has been achieved with the above initiatives. This results in

lower fuel burn and lower emissions.

Encouraging and engaging with all relevant stakeholders (National Governments, Air Traffic Management service providers, Defence Authorities, International Organisations) to carve out opportunities for air traffic management efficiency gains.

Shortening of Flying Routes : IndiGo has taken many initiatives to shorten air routes with the help

of Air Traffic Control over Indian Airspace. This has resulted in reduced track miles therefore

reducing fuel burn and CO2 emissions.

Working with Defence Authorities on Flexible Use of Airspace : Airspace is finite and must be

efficiently shared between civil and defence users. We are actively engaged with the Defence

authorities in optimizing airspace usage for mutual benefit.

Apart from Tree Plantation Drives that we undertake on a regular basis, our initiatives include efforts on

the ground to employ energy efficient practices in order to reduce our carbon footprint in our daily

operations. This is done by ensuring following:

Save Electricity

Save Water

Staff education on energy saving initiatives.

CNG is a cleaner fuel and we operate a total 39 CNG vehicles in daily operations at Delhi Airport.

We use a total of 27 Battery operated Tugs (EBT- Electric Baggage Tug) across the network.

Using thin paper Boarding Pass when there is no branding thereby resulting in less paper

consumption.

The paper used for the IndiGo catalogue is 50% recyclable thus not using virgin paper, and saving

on trees.

Carrying only 120 inflight magazines as against 180 Seats, resulting in reduced consumption of

paper & burning less fuel.

We were the pioneers in seeking permission from the Regulatory Authorities (BCAS) to do away

with Paper Tickets, thus saving trees.

Duplex printing as standard is encouraged to save on paper.

Water Carts have been placed at all stations to ensure that minimum required potable water is

carried from the originating station, based on analysis on water usage on our flights.

Reducing the usage of plastic by not uplifting 200 ml water bottles, and serving water in

eco-friendly paper cups instead.

All packaging material used for perishable food items on board are recyclable.

The lavatory tissue papers being used on-board are recyclable and eco-friendly.

Bandhan's Targeting Hardcore Poor program took several

attempts as a strategy to combat the acute poverty and help

the families to be included in mainstream institutions. The

strategies comprise household level counseling to improve

self-confidence & attitude of the women who heads their

households; capacity building technical support is extended

through regular on-site/on-job assistances, business skill

development training & handholding, providing productive

assets for household level enterprise development, advocacy

& institutional linkages for entitlements & benefits, and other

need based supports including facilitation for linkages with

financial institutions.

IndiGo is currently working towards making an impact to 600 beneficiaries. As a result of our intervention,

beneficiary women and their families will be able to enhance their income and livelihood assets through

their new enterprises for meeting the minimum requirements of the family- say, in the range of INR 36000

to INR 42,000 per annum on an average. The program is modeled to work with each beneficiary for a

cycle of 2 years (24 months) which consists identification of beneficiaries, capacity building of staff and

beneficiaries, asset transfer, trainings & handholding, follow-up, monitoring and linkages and finally

graduation of beneficiaries.

he rescue operation at Srinagar was a true example of IndiGo spirit where the entire

organization came together for a cause. We understood the urgency of supplying medical

aid, food, clothes and other necessities and hence offer our cargo service free of cost to

each one sending relief material to Srinagar from across the country, irrespective of the

weight. We realized our strength to be a faster medium of transport and be a medium of help during this

time of crisis. Mentioned below is how we contributed by providing our services free of cost

However, this wouldn't have been possible without the

support of employees who came forward to lend a helping

hand. The relief material sent by IndiGo included - clothes,

footwear, medicines, vaccines, packed food, milk tetra packs,

bread, milk powder, toiletries.

medicines, and all this was carried by us to Srinagar airport. All the relief material was carried by our

employees to the army rescue camps and local societies, to ensure that it reaches in the right hands.

Most of our employees were missing and badly affected. A team of 9 employees led by our Director -

Airport Operations, Northern Region, Mr. Navdeep Lamba left for Srinagar from Delhi with as much relief

material including a raft, life vests and other necessities. We set up a 9 day emergency response center

which was operational 24/7 to search our employees. IndiGo also helped its employees by providing

them the basic food grains, cooking oil, spices and toiletries to run the house. We also created a 6E

Srinagar Corpus where we collected funds from our employees to help our colleagues at Srinagar.

Our support still continues. Recently we donated 1000 blankets to Ms. Rabia Baji (President Jammu &

Kashmir Awami Ittehad Front) to help the people in Kashmir in this cold weather. These were carried to

Srinagar via IndiGo Cargo.

We are also coming up with a Coffee Table Book having

True heroes my sighs say, true legends my tears scream,

They smile with joy when this dismay stays, Not knowing their tomorrow,

Now united with us to prove them null”

Imran Khan: A Friend in Need... And Deed

DNA, Online, 06 October

The story reports how the film actor Imran Khan's best friend, a Kashmiri named Wasim Khan, was to wed

his fiancée Vandana in Srinagar next week. Now, that's out the window with the the city still reeling from

the impact of the flood. Wasim's mom lives in Srinagar and their two-storeyed home in Kashmir was com-

pletely destroyed in the flood. The situation was horrible and Wasim was in Mumbai when the situation

was at its worst. He kept hearing from his sister Zaiba about the distressing situation there and decided

to go to Srinagar. While he was waiting for the first available flight back home to help in the rescue opera-

tions, he sent out mails to all his friends asking for help. A common friend tells how Imran helped every

way he could. Imran even spoke to IndiGo about carrying the stuff to Srinagar and they helped this mis-

sion. Adds Imran, "These guys were brilliant. They were like, if you are sending stuff for Kashmir relief, you

can send as much stuff as you want– no extra charges, no baggage. We had warned them in advance that

we had a lot of stuff, a boat as well. There was a team of 10 guys waiting there. They took the boat straight

to the tarmac. There were three cars full of boxes. They put flood relief stickers on them and took them

straight through – no questions asked about the weight. I was very impressed with that."

I was travelling on an Indigo flight from Bengaluru to Kolkata

last Saturday, and flipped through its inflight Hello 6E maga-

zine until I came to the aha page (57). The page, addressing

Indigo's corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative, profiled

the story of two girls from a less-privileged background, whose

lives are beginning to be transformed by Indigo's education-fo-

cused Smile Foundation. There was something on that CSR

page that caught my attention; it wasn't just a "this is what we

are doing and felt it worthwhile to tell you".

There was a mention of how even a flyer like me could engage in the airline's CSR through a simple Rs 80

purchase of a Girl Power badge that each of their airhostesses wear on their left sleeve. That got me thinking

for various reasons. One, when you have a large and growing B2C brand like Indigo attempting to make a

consumer connect for a larger cause than merely 'please fly with us', then its implications, particularly when

competently managed, can be far-reaching (the coming together of the well-to-do and a backable cause).

Two, Indigo will always be the 24-year-old for me; young, enthusiastic, professional, friendly - and with an

attitude which touches the teenager in each one of us (what we wanted to be and could never become). I

speak from my insides when I say that if it had been some other airline, I would have condescendingly said

"Good effort". Because it is Indigo, I am ready to spare some loose change to be engaged with it. Four, I

worked out some maths on the airline serviette - receipt of Rs 80 per badge, manufacturing cost Rs 15, delta

of Rs 65 for investment in the girl education initiative. If you had even 10 passengers on each Indigo flight

buy this badge, it would be a take of Rs 650 per flight. Multiply this by 600 Indigo flights each day and you

have nearly Rs 400,000 being generated by the airline every single day to be invested for the benefit of girls'

education in the country.

Five, what makes this exercise interesting is not that Indigo can mobilize nearly Rs 4 lakh each day for

strengthening the cause of girl child education. It is how the company can take this to the next level.

A word of Appreciation

The beauty is that this is off-balance sheet mobilisation; it is not paid

out of Indigo's profits. Indigo can instead promise donors that it would

match the flyer's contribution rupee for rupee. Suddenly you would

have an annual corpus of Rs 12 crore donated by flyers (assuming 300

productive fund mobilization days a year) being matched by the

airline's Rs 12 crore - and when you have Rs 24 crore waiting to be

invested each year in a single cause.

You suddenly leapfrog from addressing the needs of "more than 100

children" (as per the magazine) into possibly the largest single girl education cause in India. Six, obviously

the success of this initiative would be its own enemy. An airline focused on capturing a larger market share

(37 per cent today) would possibly find this to be a corporate distraction. But here too something interesting

could be attempted; put the resources at the disposal of a first-rate agency like Teach for India, encouraging

them to go national and extending the power of structured education to the country's lowest common social

denominator. Seven, there is one downside.

Someone who has bought one badge will probably not want to buy another. Here too, Indigo could attempt

something innovative: have women celebs (pro bono) promote the cause of girl education, encourage flyers

like me to buy more and advertise our growing badge collection (through Hello 6E) or simply encourage

flyers to pin badges on someone's sleeve on landing.

Another quick math: assuming I do 40 flights a year, that would mean a contribution of Rs 3,200 per year

for the cause of girl child education (a mere 1 per cent of what I pay for the ticket, so big deal), inspire 10,000

flyers to commit this kind of money and you could have a kickstarted corpus of Rs 3.2 crore to get the big

act going. Encouraged by this self-talk, I actually ventured to buy a badge on Saturday's flight.

The airhostess said sorry, we don't have one but if you really want one, I can take mine off and give it you. I

said welcome. She never returned. To convince Indigo that I am serious about wearing this every single day

on my corporate wear (however odd it may initially appear), they are most welcome to send me one. PS. I

was seat 1F if they need to track me down. I will pay for the badge.
