How it works:

Wireless networks is networking devices to one another to transfer data, and communicate with each other.

Networking is done by nodes, and PCI cards.

Radio Frequency:

RF waves ranges from 2.4 to 2.48 GHz bandwidth.

Short waves i.e. FM/AM radio, TV, cell phones…

Radio Frequency

Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) transmission hops from one

channel to another channel till one is free. Divides the 2.4 GHz bandwidth

Direct-Sequence Spread Spectrum. (DSSS) is a transmission technology used in

LAWN transmissions where a data signal at the sending station is combined with a higher data rate bit sequence

Shorter range than RF

More secure

IEEE 802.11:

IEEE 802.11 sets the standards for wireless networks

Architectures: two options in configuring a network:

Ad-Hoc

1. Ad-Hoc- constructing a network “on the fly”

No fix pointsNo structureCommunicates by nodes; all nodes can transmit to other nodesOne master computer/device while others are the slave.

Infrastructure

Fixed network access points with mobile nodes

Access points are connected to landlines to bridge other wireless nodes to wired nodes, similar to cellular networks.

IEEE 802.11 Layers

Physical (PHY) layer The PHY actually handles the transmission of

data between nodes.

Medium Access Control (MAC) layer. The MAC layer set protocols to maintain order

when sharing of data. CSMA/CA RTS CTS CRC ACK

The benefits of using wireless network

·Mobility ·Installation Speed and Simplicity ·Installation flexibility ·Reduced Cost –of –Ownership

Page 31: Download It

Mobility

LAN systems can provide the user with access to information anywhere in their organization. This mobility supports productivity and service opportunities not possible with wired networks.

Page 32: Download It

Installation Speed and Simplicity

Wireless LAN systems can be installed fast and easy and can eliminate the need to pull cable through walls and ceilings.

Page 33: Download It

Installation flexibility

Wireless technology allows the network to go where wire can’t go.

Page 34: Download It

Reduced Cost –of –Ownership

While the initial investment required for wireless LAN hardware can be higher than the cost of wired LAN, overall installation expenses and life-cycle costs can be significantly lower. Long-term cost benefits are greatest in dynamic environments requiring frequent moves and changes.

Wireless LAN in your industry

• Corporate: Corporate employees can take advantage of mobile networking for e-mail, file sharing, and web browsing regardless of where you are in the office or outside the building.

• Education: Enable users with notebook computers to connect to the university network for collaborative class discussions and to the Internet for e-mail and web browsing.

• Manufacturing & Warehouse: Link factory floor workstations and data collection devices to a company’s network. Improve inventory tracking and reduce the costs of physical inventory counts.

The Future of wireless LAN

Many companies have invest Wireless LAN market Price come down Small and Home business grow up fast Home networking will be popular

Many companies have invest

A lot of companies have begun to invest about the wireless networking, such as Intel , Microsoft , IBM etc.Microsoft built wireless support into the successor to windows 9x, NT and later version.

Wireless LAN Market

The wireless data rate, for instance, is a scorching fast 11 Mbps, up to 10 times faster than the most popular home networking products.

It is more fit on the most business, such as transfer data, communication and Net meeting.

Page 39: Download It

Price come down

When the supply of the wireless network device become greater than the demand, user can spend a low price and get more effective device.

Page 40: Download It

Home and small business grow up fast

When the price of the wireless LANs devices are going to be more user affordable, then small and home business wireless networking will become more popular.

Page 41: Download It

Home networking increasing

Market research firm Yankee Group predicts that wireless LANs will make up a quarter of home networks by 2003.
