AMERICA NEEDS YOU FAMILY,

As a founding director, and now CEO, I could not

be more inspired by our students and excited about

the future of America Needs You.

Four short years ago, a small group of young professionals collaborated on ways

to close the opportunity gap for first-generation college students in New York City

– and as a result, New York Needs You was born! In 2012 we successfully launched

our New Jersey Needs You Fellows Program and due to its success, we are now

building the foundation for national expansion. As a founding director, and now

CEO, I could not be more inspired by our students and excited about the future of

America Needs You. Our students, hailing from over forty colleges and universities,

have achieved outstanding outcomes and they could not have done it alone. Over

96% of our students have persisted in college, compared to 11% of first-generation

college students!

In 2013 we had exceptional partners that spanned many industries and made

a significant impact on our programs. Organizations like The Heckscher Foundation

for Children, CUNY, Teach For America, Goldman Sachs and Macy’s were

thought partners, internship

and volunteer sources and

financial supporters. Through

our Fellows Program, Career

Development Program, and

key partnerships, we have helped college students to retain enrollment, obtain

internships, and secure jobs that lead to successful and fulfilling careers. 98% of

our Fellow alumni have jobs, are enrolled in graduate school, or have internships

upon college graduation. Additionally, our graduates are earning an average

annual salary of $52,000 compared to the $44,000 national average.

We humbly extend our appreciation to each and every one of you. Your time,

guidance, referrals, financial and in-kind support all contributed to an impactful year.

With my deepest gratitude,

Kimberly Aylin Harris

Chief Executive Officer

THE NEED

Having a college degree increases the likelihood

THREEFOLD of moving from the bottom

income quintile to the top. (Pew Charitable Trust, 2012)

First-generation college students drop out at

5 TIMES THE RATE of their peer

group, with only 11% graduating. (Pell Institute, 2011)

The most common reason students cite for dropping

out is that they do not believe college will help them

pursue a career and achieve financial security.

(Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation)

20-24 year olds have one of the highest rates

of unemployment in the country at 12.5% .

(Bureau of Labor Statistics)

Employers found that 60% of students with a

paid internship received a job offer their senior year,

compared to only 36% of students without

internship experience. (National Association of Students and Employers, 2012)

Nico grew up in Spring Valley, NY, living with his parents, sister, and grandmother. His parents were both immigrants to the U.S. – his father came from El Salvador after fleeing the civil war, and his mother stayed in the U.S. for work after migrating from Argentina.

Nico attended the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and at the beginning, felt that the college process was “scary,” especially as a first-generation college student. “I knew I wanted to take advantage of every opportunity available, but didn’t know how. NYNY was the perfect program that could help me excel and maximize my strengths. I also needed guidance, and knew that a mentor could provide that.“

He credits NYNY and his Mentor Coach, Michael Duignan, as being instrumental to his individual and professional growth. “[NYNY] exposed me to several individuals who helped me shape my pursuits, specifically in academia. From talks on applying to graduate school, or speaking with volunteers and panelists that were professors in their field, NYNY helped me expand my horizons.” While

in the Program, Nico interned at Community Connections for Youth, and has participated in the Latino Leadership Initiative Program at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.

Today, Nico is a Marshall Scholar at the University of Liverpool, where he is studying for an M.A. in Research Methods in Sociology and Social Policy. His dissertation research will focus on the experiences of refugees and asylum

seekers while in detention, and he will be working directly with refugees in the UK. The Scholarship is another opportunity he pursued with the support of NYNY and his Mentor Coach. “NYNY and Michael helped me through the process, from editing my essays to prepping me for the interviews. Without them, my application would not have been nearly as strong.”

“A huge thank you to NYNY for accepting me to be part of their program, which led me to meet some of the most amazing individuals in New York! Life is much brighter with them in my life.”

COMMUNITY COLLEGE TRANSFERNew York Needs You and New Jersey Needs You

recognize the amazing potential of our community

college Fellows, and provide support as they

transfer to four-year colleges.

Our professional development curriculum not only

helps students secure and succeed in internships,

but also builds skills that are critical to successfully

transferring to a four-year college or university.

Our staff and Mentor Coaches also provide

individualized guidance and application support.

We are proud of the accomplishments of our

community college Fellows; in FY13 100%

of our students enrolled in community

colleges transferred to universities, including

City College, Columbia, Cornell, NYU and

Rutgers University.

Due to the success of our community college

students, we have increased the number of

community college students in our program.

Over 30% of our 2013 Fellows, selected in May

2013, are community college students; we expect

this number to continue to grow.

To better serve these students, we have developed

five additional sessions about the transfer process.

These sessions feature panels of Fellow alumni

who have transferred and guest speakers on

financial aid and transfer from target campuses,

and cover topics such as four-year school selection,

scholarships and financial aid, required tests,

application essays, and acclimating to a new campus.

Vashti moved from Guyana to the United States when she was very young. She was raised by her mother who sacrificed and struggled to give Vashti and her siblings the best. Vashti’s mother left high school to ensure that she could fully support her family. Still, she taught Vashti and her siblings to value education and hard work. “I made a personal vow to myself many years ago to excel, accomplish, and advance in everything that I do so that my mom could sleep easier at night. At the time I had no idea how to do that. The only thing that I knew was that I had to go to college if I was ever going to make that happen,” says Vashti. Now, she is an honors student at Hunter College, studying Economics, but admits that her first year in college was challenging, especially as a first-generation college student. “I felt lost in a big world that did not stop moving for one second. I had so many questions and I did not even know how to approach someone to ask for help,” she says. Fortunately, she discovered the NYNY program through a 2010 Fellow. “I looked the program up, and I remember getting goose bumps as I read the mission. It was exactly what I needed.”

Vashti calls the NYNY program life- changing. With the support of NYNY and Naeema, her Mentor Coach, Vashti has interned at Morgan Stanley and will begin an internship with Macy’s in summer 2014. She has learned to craft resumes and interview for jobs and feels confident be-cause NYNY has forced her to be the “best possible version” of herself.

Naeema has been one of her biggest advocates. “She compliments my personality perfectly, and we make an amazing team. NYNY has given me a mentor and friend for life.”

“Thinking about graduating from NYNY in May [2014] makes me very emotional. When I applied to NYNY, I did not know that I would get professional development and gain a supportive family. As the saying goes, family is forever. NYNY will always be with me. No matter where I go, what I accomplish, and who I become, it was here in this program, as a 2012 Fellow that I found myself. Thank you.”

“ I want to thank New York Needs You for introducing me to a role model in the flesh, a mentor and a friend: Melanie. Her support these last two years has been invaluable to me. She has seen potential in me that I never thought I had. While others have said I dream too big, New York Needs You has said I should continue to dream and dream even bigger.” — Kay, 2012 Fellow

America Needs You offers multiple volunteer

options across our two programs, ranging from

a two-year one-on-one commitment as a Mentor

Coach in the Fellows Program to a one-time or

periodic commitment as a Career Coach in the

Career Development Program.

Mentor Coaches and Career Coaches play an

active role in delivering the curriculum content

at workshops. These volunteers serve on ca-

reer exposure panels, co-facilitate sessions with

industry-specific material, and are encouraged

to provide real-world experiences that bring the

curriculum to life.

MENTOR COACHES

Our Mentor Coaches are accomplished individuals,

often rising stars at their respective firms. Mentor

Coaches typically have three to seven years of work

experience and additional honors including White

House internships and Rhodes Scholarships. Their

success is not merely defined by their professional

achievements, but also by their dedication to giving

back to their communities and participation in

previous volunteer programs or nonprofit boards.

CAREER COACHES

Our Career Coaches are accomplished professionals

with three or more years of experience who support

the program at the professional development

workshops and at the career exploration seminars.

The Career Development Program (CDP) is a ten-session career exploration seminar series conducted in

partnership with college career centers and student clubs. The series demystifies industry-specific career

requirements while preparing students to choose a career and search for and secure summer internships.

The seminars, facilitated by America Needs You volunteers who are working professionals, provide students

with industry overviews, internship advice and networking. All seminars are free and open to the general

student population on partner campuses.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

“ I participated in the Finance seminar in fall 2012. I was totally inspired.

Before that, Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan were merely big brand names

to me. By networking with the panelists, I understood more what I wanted

to be. By learning about their career paths, I had more clues about what I

should do during college to prepare myself for my future career.”

ANNUAL BENEFIT On September 12, 2012, more than 650 of our supporters attended the third annual Benefit Dinner at Cipriani

42nd Street. It was a memorable night where Fellows shared incredible stories about how the organization

has impacted their lives and honorees Raymond J. McGuire and Bruce E. Mosler spoke of the importance of

mentorship. With $1.4 million raised from the Benefit, we would like to thank everyone who made this Benefit

a successful celebration of the work we do in our fight for economic mobility.

21Annual Report July 2012 – June 2013

1. Why NYNY?NYNY reached out to several recruiters in New York to participate in a mock interview day with the first NYNY class. Needless to say, I was impressed with the caliber of the Fellows! At the time, I was looking for an organization to get involved with on a meaningful level and this experience sold me. After that, I attended all of the recruiting events and was excited to submit my application and be selected as a Mentor Coach.

2. What makes your Fellow – Mentor Coach relationship work? We started talking about music at one of the first workshops and hit it off immediately. I think the foundation of our relationship is sincerity and positivity. I have always lived by the idea that anything is accomplishable and [Peneliope] validates that philosophy every day. With several internships under her belt and over one-hundred articles published online, she has accomplished so much in the past two years, and I am proud to have been a part of that journey.

3. What have you gained from participating in this program? At the end of the day, NYNY has validated my belief that people are good and kind. I see this in the Fellows, staff, Mentors and the greater NYNY network. Throughout the program, Mentor Coaches and Fellows often have to seek time, help, or expertise from our personal and professional networks in order to move towards our goals. Each time we do so we see that people are not only willing to help but are actually enthusiastic about going above and beyond what was asked.

4. Why should others apply to be Mentor Coaches?Outside of our careers, there are very few structured “extra-curricular activities” for young professionals to get involved in that provide us with a strong sense of accomplishment and social connection. Being a Mentor Coach is amazing because it gives you the opportunity to set and achieve goals with your Fellow and develop your leadership skills, all while having fun with an incredible group of Fellows and Mentors.

“ Over the last year and a half Geraldine has been an exceptional mentor, not only

to her assigned mentee but also to other Fellows who sought her assistance for

advice on career opportunities and decision-making. Geraldine is one of the most

consistently engaged mentors throughout the New York Needs You workshops.

Her bright smile, bubbly personality, excellent attendance, active participation and

leadership roles on various panel discussions, and workshop sessions are evidence

that she takes her mentorship role very seriously.” — Mary, 2012 Fellow

“ I was accepted, not knowing exactly what to expect. Turns out, I wasn’t just

accepted to a fellowship program, but to a family. I have been blessed with a

wonderful mentor, Jess, who has become one of my most trusted sources of

advice and assistance with anything I face. Jess has worked hard to help me

achieve success, from late nights doing interview prep, identifying contacts in my

field and just simply making sure that I am doing well.” — Matthew, 2012 Fellow

DEAR FRIENDS,

LETTER FROM THE FOUNDER & BOARD CHAIR

I want to personally thank everyone who has believed

in our mission to fight for these ambitious students.

As the founder of America Needs You, I am amazed at how far we have come.

We came into existence as a result of the unmet need of mentorship and career

preparation for low-income and first-generation college students.

America Needs You is in a unique position to build on the successful foundation

of New York Needs You and New Jersey Needs You. We plan to build a national

movement to mobilize thousands more volunteers. We have a monumental

opportunity to reach a wider audience through geographic replication of the

organization’s programs.

Our vision now is to significantly shift the outcomes of the lives of America’s

underserved and underprivileged youth. There are so many who can benefit

from our flagship Fellows

Program and our Career

Development Program.

I want to personally thank

everyone who has believed in our mission to fight for these ambitious students

who otherwise do not have access to supportive services like ours. I am looking

forward to updating you on our progress and your continued support as we

impact the lives of thousands more students across America.

Sincerely,

Robert Reffkin

Founder and Chair
