Learning the importance of corporate social responsibilityWhen I came to Schulich I thought I would only learn about accounting, finance, economics and other key aspects of business. However, in the first year, I had the pleasure to learn about the significance of corporate philanthropy and corporate citizenship, which has taught me that community engagement activities performed by companies are an integral part of a business and a great way to connect with stakeholders. My views about the corporate world have widened and I am excited to explore more opportunities in future years.

Business succession AdvisorIt’s been almost 40 years since I entered the Faculty of Administrative Studies back in 1976!
My memories of the School, the many friendships developed which have lasted a lifetime, the talented professors, and how my thought process was nurtured by the case study teaching style, are still strong and meaningful today. Congratulations to the Schulich School, and the hard work and dedication of Dean Horváth and his faculty and staff for making us all proud alumni.

The Global Leadership program – A unique experience with truly exceptional students (that has been going strong for almost 25 years)There is probably no better way to get to know how great our students are than when you get to work on a project with them. I have had the privilege of working with many great students during the 25 years of the Global Leadership Program. Every project has been unique, exceptionally challenging and demanding. And every group of students has risen to the occasion, has inspired me with their passion, creativity, hard work and professionalism. Every one of the many students has reminded me what a privilege it is to be a professor and how special Schulich is as a place attracting the best and brightest, as well as the nicest students. They have literally gone to the bottom of the earth for me and they have gotten really muddy and dirty for me and for the glory of Schulich (as the photo above would attest).

Long-lasting friendshipsAttending Schulich not only transformed my career path, it also made a huge impact on my personal life. Schulich’s curriculum offered me an opportunity to learn about many different aspects of business to which I did not have much exposure.
Every assignment or test was a memorable challenge; however, my fondest memory is about our MBA capstone project (“the 601”). For the most part, the project proceeded without many hiccups; however, at a critical phase in the project, we quickly learned that our client was sold to another firm which meant a significant shift in the operating environment. Our team had to quickly respond to this change in the project and time was running out. Under tight time constraints, we had to pull a few all-nighters; and these all-nighters involved having intense debates, writing up reports and playing a few rounds of video games to decompress.
This became a solid foundation for a couple of life-long friendships; with whom I was honored to have as my groomsmen. This journey and the camaraderie is a memory that I will always hold dear.
Tony Dong Yung Yu (MBA ’11)
dean Horváth once told me…Dean Horváth once told me “the Schulich MBA program will break you and then build you right back up”. It was only after graduation when I realized what he truly meant. The strategic thinking skills you will develop by going through the program will prove invaluable as you continue to rise up the corporate ladder. Thank you, Schulich, for this and for all my lovely classmates that I now call my friends. Trust me when I say that after the MBA program none of us wanted to be in contact with each other for at least one year because we spent way too much time doing group work and assignments. However, after time passed by, we came together again and have an unbreakable bond which cannot be explained.
Nijusha Barmala (MBA ’10)
Just a stop gapWhile thinking about a request to submit a story to the Schulich 50th Anniversary site I realized that I don’t have just one story to share, rather my story is about an accumulation of stories, events, courses and people in my over 18 years at Schulich. I arrived back at Schulich after more than a decade of working, mostly, in magazine publishing. It was a stop gap, a time to reassess my balancing act as mother and full-time career person. I hadn’t known about the specialized MBA program in Arts and Media (ARTM), even as an undergrad at York, but it sounded like a good fit – I could keep my fingers in the media sector but have a bit more time to spend with my family. What I didn’t anticipate was that the ARTM program, its faculty, students and alumni, would become my second family.
It is a rare thing to find a job that allows you to feel like what you do makes a difference. I’m not a doctor/firefighter/police officer so I’m not saving lives, but my day-to-day interactions with students, the little help I can provide them navigating through the MBA and getting a start on their new careers, is very rewarding. All the day-to-day frustrations melt away when you get an email from a student or graduate telling you about their great new job or when you hear from alumni about their marriage, birth of their child or just to say ‘hi’.
The ability to work with Joyce Zemans (Program Director) as a team to provide students and alumni with the support of a network of graduates almost as old as the school (47 years) makes getting up to come to work a good thing. That’s my Schulich story, and with the help of faculty, students and graduates, I look forward to all the ARTM/SSB stories of success that will be written well into the future.

schulich: a family affairMy Schulich experience will always be tied into my early family milestones. I began my Schulich experience one week after my daughter was born. I chose Schulich because when I was researching and applying to MBA programs knowing that I was pregnant and would be starting the program during my maternity leave, the admissions staff that I spoke to were welcoming and supportive of my wanting to enter the program. I took the course part-time right through my return to work, the birth of my son, and my second maternity leave. Not only was my experience at Schulich great, my 601 group won the Strategy Field prize in the non-profit sector, and I ended up having my graduation day on the same day as my daughter’s kindergarten graduation!
Jeannette Chau (MBA ’01)
My career in mining started at schulichI had never thought I would be in the mining business before I studied at Schulich. I am currently President of the Beijing Mining Exchange and, prior to this position, I had worked for the TSX and a mining company based in Toronto. My connection with mining started from a business forum at Schulich back in 2004. I was then the Mining Panel Manager for the China Business Forum, a student-run business conference, and spent quite a lot of time developing an understanding of the strength of the Canadian mining sector and pitching mining professionals to speak on the panel. I must admit that the stories of Mr. Seymour Schulich and Mr. Rob McEwen also encouraged me to devote myself to the mining business.
George Gao (MBA ’05)
My schulich experienceStanding on the shoulders of giants, every Schulich moment pushes you through decades of business experience, teaching you incredible ways to think preeminently!

The path to personal and professional growth in a global marketplaceDuring my IMBA I fondly recall attending the International Business Seminar course (led by a former executive at McCain Foods) with much excitement. I was always fascinated by learning about the history of selected industries and companies; by meeting accomplished professionals and hearing their stories about entering new markets, doing business in other cultures and overcoming the challenges of international affairs. This was definitely a key motivator for me, which upon completing my degree drove me to embark on a successful international career of over 15 years, taking me to literally over 40 countries. Now back in Canada, I feel much richer, both personally and professionally, thanks to these opportunities.
Juan Carlos Sanchez (IMBA ’99)
Home away from home… truly globalFour years ago, I packed my bags, said my goodbyes and boarded a plane to Canada. When I moved here, I did not know anyone, and the challenge looming ahead for me was significant. However, Schulich has always made me feel right at home and I couldn’t have asked for a better university experience.
Schulich has enabled me to truly develop on a personal and academic level. Having had some fantastic classes and professors (special shout-out to instructor Rod Pamenter’s FINE 4150 class), I have had the sort of opportunities, experiences and development I flew halfway across the world for. Having been involved with multiple organizations, and having garnered work experience in different fields, I have fully enjoyed my time at Schulich. It goes without saying that I have created friendships and memories that I will cherish throughout my life.
Unbelievably, the School continues to get EVEN better every year and I know that wherever I go – I will always be rooting for Schulich!

This milestone event provides us with the opportunity to celebrate a half-century of achievements and Schulich’s transformational role as a global leader in management education. At the same time, our 50th Anniversary gives us the opportunity to look forward to the future and the many great achievements still to come for our School and the Schulich community.
The Dean’s Reception is one of a series of special events taking place in Toronto and around the world this year as we celebrate our 50th Anniversary with the entire Schulich community, culminating in a 50th Anniversary Gala in May 2016 to commemorate the formation of our School.

Like any leading business, we must continue to grow and change to meet the demands of our stakeholders and the rapidly evolving global marketplace. That is why we are expanding our global footprint, with campuses in Hyderabad, India and Beijing, China. And that is why we continue to innovate and introduce new, leading-edge programs and specializations like Business Analytics, Health Industry Management and Global Retail Management.
The Leading Change Campaign is both our celebration of 50 years of incredible achievements in business research and education, and a harbinger for our promising future as a global thought leader and source of next-generation talent.
With the support of our community, we will construct a 70,000-square-foot new home for Schulich’s graduate students and research. We're investing in our belief that the future of global innovation and leadership begins
with research. We will leverage the space to establish new programs, help our students succeed with scholarships and attract leading faculty chairs and professors for new and existing Centres of Excellence. Our students will gain powerful collaborative learning and research experiences. We will deliver practical solutions to real-life challenges. Schulich will continue to shape the future of global business.
Designed by award-winning international architectural firm Baird Sampson Neuert, Schulich’s new Graduate Study and Research Building will reflect our commitment to world-class architecture, innovation and sustainability.
On this strategic path the Schulich School of Business will continue to prove that the best only keep getting better. Be a part of helping Canada’s largest and most internationally-minded business school solidify its role as an incubator of new ideas and the business leaders of the future.
LEAdinG cHAnGESince our founding in 1965 and over the past 50 years, the Schulich School of Business has emerged as one of the world’s preeminent business schools.
