Bio-based PE
A new label for Ecover from
Avery Dennison shows how
easily converters can switch to
more sustainable materials when
they have the right support.
The move to more sustainable packaging depends on innovative products and strong technical backup. The bio-based PE facestock from Avery Dennison has been developed to give converters a very easy replacement material for conventional PE facestocks, and a recent project with Ecover reveals the product’s potential.
AN AMBITIOUS GOALHistorically, Ecover has taken a leadership role, including its adoption of packaging containers made from sugar cane resin and recycled plastic. When informed about the possibility of sourcing a facestock made from the same renewable ingredients, Ecover was enthusiastic to participate in this development.
Avery Dennison was able to provide Ecover with a label that met its sustainability requirements, using new Bio-based PE facestock – see page 6 for the full story. The material’s facestock is made from sugar cane ethanol, certified under the Bonsucro® scheme.
EASY TO SWITCHAvery Dennison Bio-based PE facestock offers the simplest possible transition for converters, needing only standard converting equipment. The material converts with very similar properties to conventional polyethylene (PE)*, ensuring easy requalification and providing the functionality and performance of a regular PE label.
RENEWABLE AND RECYCLABLEThe raw material behind Bio-based PE is sugar cane ethanol, a first-generation biofuel widely recognized for unique environmental and social benefits. The sugar cane crop captures CO2 from the atmosphere as it grows, actively compensating greenhouse emissions rather than adding to them. Grown on degraded pastures, it also has a low impact on biodiversity, and can be recycled in standard PE recycling facilities.

Key Feature Story
With its bio-based detergent
and containers made from
sugar cane resin, Ecover
responded with enthusiasm
when Avery Dennison
contacted them and
suggested a label to match.
Gerrit Heersink gave close support throughout all development stages, visiting the label converter, the dispensing Ecover line in France and actively reaching out to the die manufacturer, to continuously ensure easy conversion and smooth operations.
Technical Sales Specialists go beyond ‘problem solving’. In fact, we aim to drive innovation, ensuring a smooth customer journey and a successful outcome. Gerrit Heersink, Technical Sales Specialist Avery Dennison Europe, Benelux
Cradle-to-cradle certification is the ‘gold standard’ of sustainable products, involving an independent external assessment. When Avery Dennison suggested a bio-based facestock to Ecover, it was clear that this solution would help them reach a higher standard – and technical sales specialist Gerrit Heersink was ready and able to help.
Gerrit Heersink was a key player in a multi-functional Avery Dennison team that drove the Ecover project, seeking ideas and managing the entire value chain. Many different contributions led to the final result, including close collaboration with the resin producer Braskem and development work with the label converters.
As a requirement, Ecover wanted at least 80% sugar cane content in the label’s facestock to get external EPEA certification. Avery Dennison worked closely with Braskem and its film supplier to create a construction that contained even more than 80% sugar cane. Sample rolls were available 3 months after the initial meeting with Ecover, and a successful trial was achieved with the Ecover product the following month.
The benefits of reaching out to the whole value chain when improving sustainability were clear in this project - we went from initial discussions to converted labels in less than five months. Xander van der Vlies, Sustainability Director, Avery Dennison Europe
This was a fast and productive journey for us. Avery Dennison gave us all of the support needed to ensure the result we wanted, with production on a very short timescale. Tom Domen, EU Head of Greenskeeping and Long Term Innovation, Ecover

Wine & Spirits
White is the main colour for wine labels. Designers base their work on the original whiteness of the paper, and consumers’ choices are heavily influenced by the visual impact of art work on a white background. Striking the right balance and maintaining visual impact in wet conditions (ice bucket) is therefore a primary need, especially for white, sparkling and rosé wines – and brand image suffers if a label deteriorates when in the ice bucket.
Avery Dennison Aqua Opaque™ technology keeps labels white even in wet conditions. It resists the impact of moisture absorption – and prevents the ‘greying’ effect– for at least 2 hours. Aqua Opaque safeguards visual appeal at all stages in the value chain, including the chilling cabinet and consumers’ homes. It can be applied to virtually any paper in the Avery Dennison Wine, Spirits and Craft Beer range, including White Rainbow extra-white papers, with greater contrast and outstanding print performance.
Consumer research confirms the impact of maintaining the whiteness of the label in wet conditions. A recent pair comparison study by research firm Mind Insights* showed statistically significant improvements to perceived product quality after immersion in an ice bucket (Aqua Opaque vs standard labelling). Criteria included emotional impact, quality, perfection, prestige, and elegance, all of which were positively affected by the use of Aqua Opaque™ technology. End users, designers and printers can take advantage of these improvements, and enhance consumer perceptions while using their paper of choice.
PORTFOLIO CHARACTERISTICS > Stay-white performance > Resists greying for at least two hours in the ice bucket > Can be used with almost any Wine, Spirits and Craft Beer paper
> Compatible with White Rainbow extra-white papers > Safeguards brand image > Offers greater consumer appeal as confirmed by research
APPLICATION AREAS > Wine > Spirits > Craft beer

Label look is just one part of a consumer’s impression of a bottle. Communicating brand values properly means going further – how does a label feel? What’s the sound when it’s touched? Is there perhaps even a scent?
The Avery Dennison Sensorial range gives designers a broader toolset. Different label surfaces can be created using soft touch, textured or patterned papers – creating a premium, vintage or artisanal feel. Hand-picked trees used to create wooden labels that recall the roots of nature with a delicate scent. Diverse label surfaces can be used to give consumers a subtle message when hearing the sound of a finger moving over the surface. And of course an outstanding visual impact is retained to engage the most dominant of all the senses.
A Wine, Spirits and Craft Beer journey may always reach its zenith in taste, but Avery Dennison Sensorial materials help you to give the consumer a detailed and rewarding experience on the way.
PORTFOLIO CHARACTERISTICS > Materials for any premium brand image > Engage all consumer senses > Velvet Vellum for soft and smooth premium paper labels > Soft Touch White for a signature feel > Textile Look to recall tradition and character > Fibers Look for a great feel and non-coated traditional look

With more than 5,000 breweries* operating in Europe, and thousands of retail brands, beer choices for consumers are seemingly endless. New beer varieties are constantly entering the market, adding to already intense pressure on shelf space.
Breweries rely increasingly on packaging differentiation to grab attention where it really counts: the retail point of sale. Brand owners need maximum shelf impact, and a recent study confirms that a label can attract consumer attention and drive purchase intent**.
The study by Package InSight examined the shelf impact of craft beer labels, for products in a simulated retail store environment. It measured time spent looking at a product label, and how many times labels caught participants’ eyes. For details, see label.averydennison.eu/craftbeer.
Avery Dennison offers the market insights needed to form brand strategy. It also gives label converters both the range of materials and the in-depth technical support needed to meet all application requirements within the growing craft beer market.
PORTFOLIO CHARACTERISTICS > Wide range of papers and films + colours and textures > Clear-on-clear, metallised & glossy bright white, traditional uncoated materials and many more
> Materials and adhesives for temperature extremes > Materials and adhesives for application and storage in wet conditions
> Sustainable solutions including FSC® certified materials > Technologies that facilitate bottle reuse and aid post-consumer recycling
Cheers to market growth!Craft beer labelling materials

HIGH VISUAL IMPACTHigh quality paper and filmic facestocks are included in the portfolio, meeting rising consumer demand for over-the-counter (OTC) products. These facestocks give the printing performance needed for decorative OTC drug containers, which often use clear and silk-screen labels to enhance perceived product value.
PORTFOLIO CHARACTERISTICS > Drug patents are expiring, with growing demand for generic drugs
> Over-the-counter (OTC) products are increasingly popular with self-medicating patients
> New generic/OTC products are produced on production lines with high efficiency and use attractive packaging
> The Avery Dennison pharmaceutical range includes availability and change notification guarantees
APPLICATION AREAS: > Small containers: 10-150 ml volume and 15-50 mm diameter
> Substrates including glass, PE and PP (including treated, slip-coated or varnished)
> Low migration labels for thin-walled LDPE containers > Applications requiring excellent mandrel performance
Sophistication in all sizes and containersEthical and OTC pharmaceutical labelling materials
Pharmaceutical containers are small – ranging from 10-150 ml in volume, and with typical diameters of 15-50 mm. The right adhesive, with excellent mandrel performance, is essential for successful label conversion and dispensing. Avery Dennison pharmaceutical portfolio suits substrates that include glass, PE and PP (including treated, slip-coated or varnished), and it comes with an all-important availability and change notification guarantees.
LOW MIGRATIONPlastic containers are more economical, efficient and convenient for end users, and are rapidly acquiring market share. However, there are worldwide regulatory concerns about packaging migration into medication, meaning more testing, approvals and certifications.
Migration is highly complex. Chemicals in some printing and label materials can permeate into a container, often triggered by storage conditions, bottle design or inappropriate adhesive. Avery Dennison dramatically reduces migration risks with its low-migration adhesive S692NP – especially important as the use of plastic increases.
Our dedicated pharmaceutical adhesive S717P is designed for low surface-energy substrates, down to 10mm in diameter, and reduces edge lift on small mandrels. The adhesive is FDA approved and cytotoxicity tested in accordance with ISO10993-5 standards, enabling accelerated re-certification.

Small, simple, superiorLabelling solutions for injectable devices
Pre-filled syringes and auto-injectors are now commonplace devices for delivering non-oral medication. The market is still growing fast, due to a higher demand of medication against cancer and long term medical conditions.
The industry-wide preference for injectable devices can be explained by multiple benefits, such as increased dosage security and assurance of sterility. Avery Dennison offers a sophisticated portfolio of labelling solutions designed specifically for small-diameter pharmaceutical containers. The range includes syringe labels for many storage solutions and temperature ranges. It provides excellent tight mandrel performance, and a low risk of adhesive migration or edge lift.
PORTFOLIO CHARACTERISTICS > Pre-filled syringes and injector devices are among the fastest growing pharmaceutical markets
> Pre-filled syringes are advantageous in many ways, including less drug waste and fewer dosing errors
> Auto-injector pens allow patients self medication, with big practical benefits
> Avery Dennison notifies any changes to adhesives* 12 months in advance
APPLICATION AREAS: > Auto-injector pens for diabetics, autoimmune deficiencies and more
> Pre-filled syringes
* Only applies to the following adhesives: S2000NP, S2045NP, S717P, S692NP

Life-saving reliabilitySecondary blood and plasma bag labels
Blood and plasma bags present unique labelling challenges. The blood is stored in refrigerators and the plasma in freezers, so low-temperature performance is essential. However, there are other criteria that are critically important too.
Permanent adhesion is one criterion. Reliable identification is needed for bags that contain life-saving material, without the need for unreliable ‘backup’ methods such as rubber bands. The labels also have to offer simplicity to busy users in hospitals – attaching easily to a bag without the need for warming, wiping and drying the bag surface.
Avery Dennison blood and plasma labelling materials offer shorter operational times for end users, such as hospitals and blood banks, and lower error rates – with consequent cost savings and reductions in material waste. The portfolio is also non-PVC, and so meets expected upcoming regulations to stop the use of PVC in these applications.
PORTFOLIO CHARACTERISTICS > Strong adhesion at low temperatures > Creates additional adhesive surface > Labels follows curvy surfaces, making them easier to attach
> PVC-free (no DEHP plasticizer content) > Helps reducing waste and costs of destroying products which cannot be identified correctly
APPLICATION AREAS > Plasma labelling > Pharmaceutical applications at low temperatures > Human and animal health: blood fractioning, stem cells, serum

Some of the most difficult durable goods applications involve labelling textured plastic surfaces with a low surface energy, in an environment where high chemical and heat resistance are required. Hybrid adhesives S8039 and S8049 were developed by Avery Dennison to fill the gap left by previous technologies. Existing adhesives were either unable to offer the required resistance properties, or their adhesion levels on rough plastics did not fulfill end users’ expectations.
The rough plastic challenge Hybrid adhesive technology - S8039 and S8049
LSE Substrate
HYBRID ADHESIVE TECHNOLOGY
Rubber hybridised acrylic adhesives offer excellent performance on low surface energy (LSE) substrates thanks to their rubber phase. They also maintain strength and chemical resistance because of their acrylic backbone.
The rubber chains (green) are connected to an acrylic backbone polymer (blue): and these rubber chains form domains in the adhesive. After application onto a substrate, the chains re-orientate themselves towards the substrate to improve adhesion. This re-orientation starts immediately after application, but depending on the substrate it takes some time to reach the final, extremely high level of adhesion. Peel adhesion and performance tests are recommended only after a dwell time of 48 hours.
ONE ADHESIVE FORMULATION, TWO OPTIONSThe RHA adhesive is available with a coat weight of up to 45 g/m² using the following products:
> S8039: for coat weights of 16 to 40 g/m². Different facestocks and liners can be chosen via the Avery Dennison Mix & Match™ service
> S8049: for a coat weight of 45 g/m². White and silver polyester films and also a transfer tape are available as stock products with small minimum order quantities
S8039 and S8049 are rubber hybridized acrylic (RHA) adhesives. They use an acrylic network to give high cohesion and strength – and also domains of rubber to ensure high adhesion on low surface energy substrates.
PORTFOLIO CHARACTERISTICS > High peel adhesion on extremely difficult substrates > Suitable for rough, low surface energy plastics such as PE, PP or lacquers
> Able to cope with oil contamination > Meet automotive OEM specifications > Available with a wide range of facestocks

Label appearance can be affected when outgassing plastics generate wrinkles and bubbles- distorting the finish and spoiling the end result. This can be a particular issue for injection-moulded plastics, such as PC and ABS, commonly used in the durable goods industry. Avery Dennison Air Egress technology uses a micro-embossed texture to create an even, nearly flawless finish. The texture in the adhesive creates a grid and allows trapped air to escape. The result is labels that go on smoothly and stay that way, without the unsightly wrinkles and bubbles that can cause application scrap and wasteful reworking.
PORTFOLIO CHARACTERISTICS > Smooth labels on outgassing substrates > Reduces the risk of bubbles during application > Excellent print performance on different facestocks > Can save unnecessary labour costs for reapplication and material wastage
Reduces risks of bubbles Air Egress technology
APPLICATION AREAS > Plastic covers and parts made of PC or ABS, and other materials that release gases at elevated temperatures
> Large labels that are difficult to apply smoothly

With the most comprehensive portfolio of peelable solutions in the market, Avery Dennison offers general, special, ultra-repositionable and water-removable adhesives that suit a broad range of labelling substrates.
Exposure conditions Are there any unusual environmental conditions during or after application? What is the minimum application temperature of the adhesive?
Label size The greater the area of adhesive contact, the greater the force required to remove the label. With large labels, a reduced adhesive weight or an ultraremovable adhesive should be considered.

PORTFOLIO CHARACTERISTICS > A broad range of specialist removable adhesives for a wide variety of substrates
> Many available facestocks and liners > Easy-peel for quick removability without residues
APPLICATION AREAS: > Promotional and retail applications (newspapers, price tags, magazines, books)
> Removable food labels applied at low temperatures > Window stickers and protection labels > Textiles labelling > Shipping and tracking
Make it easy: choose the right removable for the jobChoosing the right peelable labelling material, and especially the best adhesive, means looking at a number of key factors that influence adhesion, performance and ultimate removability:
Facestock Internal strength or weakness of a facestock is a significant factor for ultimate removability. Higher strength ensures a greater degree of removability.
Substrate Shape, roughness and cleanliness of the surface must be known when selecting the correct adhesive. Is it flat or curved, textured or corrugated, damp or dry? Is the substrate glass, paper, textile or polymeric?

Resealable labels offer user-friendly and easy open/close functionality. With a wide range of basic to more demanding reclosure labels, including both dry and wet applications, they offer a cost-effective route to crucial shelf appeal. There are alternatives with different seal strength and peel ‘feels’.
APPLICATION AREAS: > Dry food > Frozen food > Fresh food
WHY RESEALABLE?Manufacturers in the food industry are seeking convenient and easy-to-use functional packaging. Resealable labels can be placed anywhere on a pack, and removed or re-applied as desired without leaving adhesive residue. They give brand owners a cost-effective and efficient alternative to zippers or hard reclose packaging.
The Avery Dennison resealable range suits a variety of applications – everything from simple dry-goods with a limited number of opens/reclosures to products that will perform time after time despite challenging contents.
FOOD-FRIENDLY ADHESIVES Almost any application can be catered for, with facestocksthat include polypropylene, polyethylene, polyester andco-extruded film. Note that polypropylene or polyethylenefilms with TC7007 topcoat are food compliant and safe touse in all food contact applications.
S692N or S4000N Excellent entry-level adhesives. Bond securely to filmic packaging. And able to open and close several times.
R5000N or C3 For dry food reclosure applications. These adhesives form a secure bond with smooth peel from most substrates.
R5050 or R1490M For more demanding applications. Good moisture resistance and clean removal from PET and PP substrates. Good ‘recovery’ properties – resealable many times.
Store the food, protect the brand Reclosure solutions for food applications

Make any label direct thermal printable with low Minimum Order Quantities The thin overlaminating film alternative can make any label direct thermal printable, including parts of a preprinted standard or prime label. It enables the use of original label materials, while enabling serialisation if needed at a later stage, maintaining original label characteristics.
Reveal the inner beautyClear Direct Thermal films
PORTFOLIO CHARACTERISTICS > PP75 grades with improved transparency > Economical PP70 matt clear alternatives > Thin overlaminating film PP25
APPLICATION AREAS > Clamshell packaging > Fresh fruit and produce packaging > Food sold by weight, weighed in-store > Addition of variable information section to prime labels
Packaging and shelf appeal have become increasingly important for food products. There is a general trend that consumers like to see the product inside the packaging, resulting in a strong growth of clear packaging such as clamshells. Labelling these products with white labels does not provide the required results.
That is why Avery Dennison has developed a range of Clear Direct Thermal films, all top coated and BPA-free. It is now possible to maintain a high shelf-appeal, using see-through packaging even when there is a need for variable information.
The offering consists of top-coated products in combination with our two well-known adhesives: S692N for general purpose, and S2800 which gives high performance on fresh and cold surfaces.
These thermo-sensitive products are designed for use in thermal printing systems at printing speeds up to 200 mm/sec.

Direct Thermal printable radiants, wine papers, foils: a solution for every need. All with Minimum Order Quantities as low as 1000 square meters.
Radiant papers are a really popular solution, mainly in the retail segment. They provide an easy way to highlight important information, error corrections, promotions or price reductions. High visibility also makes them a great solution in many other applications including larger ‘warning’ tracking labels.
Today, creating coloured Direct Thermal printable labels requires solid-ink printed on to direct thermal paper which can have a negative effect on the thermal layer and print characteristics. Alternative for very high volumes a direct thermal coating could be applied to the coloured paper. Avery Dennison now offers the possibility to create a wide range of coloured, structured and metallised products that are direct-thermal printable.
Avery Dennison Radiant and Coloured Direct Thermal solutions are one-side fluorescent colour coatedpapers. They are laminated with a thermal clear film, that provides good resistance to moisture, oil and alcohol. These thermo-sensitive products can be converted by all usual roll conversion technologies.

Labels without the stickNo-stick* solutions
Avery Dennison offers the No- stick*(star), a dry-peel adhesive coated with ‘star dots’. No-stick* products are designed to facilitate easy delamination without the need for an ungummed area, for coupon labeling and a wide range of applications.
These labels are easy to open and can be used for coupons on cosmetics, toiletries, luxury articles and promotional labelling. Dry-peel constructions also enable the creation of promotional hanging bottle-neck tags on a roll. This feature is used where automatic dispensing of dry tags is required.
The precise choice for an adhesive depends on application. No-stick* products are offered with permanent adhesives. All products are easy to convert and can be printed with conventional printing technologies. They can be dispensed either automatically or manually.

High-opacity barrier coating on paper or film hide errors, and covers outdated information on packaging, labels and containers.
Typing errors, changes, omissions, updates … no matter what the mistake or need to re-label, Avery Dennison Select Solutions Cover-up portfolio can make it right without the high cost of re-packing.
Almost every packaged product will need to have its labelling changed or adapted at some point in its life. It is crucial to ensure that any over-labelling is truly opaque. This makes the new labels fully legible and, especially for correction labels, ensures that overprinted data is hidden. Avery Dennison opaque label stocks offer label converters and their customers an unrivalled range of options in both paper and film, and with permanent and removable adhesives.
The range is a genuine one-stop shop for all correction applications, and the sheer quantity of choices available allows for highly creative solutions - for example, an attractive coloured background on a clear bottle. Most paper or film products can be customised on demand to use a specific opaque colour.

Brand owners are seeking sustainability gains hence the demand for sustainably sourced raw materials is growing rapidly. Products derived from plant-based sources avoid using scarce petroleum resources, and prevent pollution from fossil fuel extraction. Building brand security
Anti-counterfeiting solutions are hard-to-copy features, integrated with labels, that enable authorities and/or consumers to tell between an authentic product and a counterfeit one. They can be combined with tamper-evident features to meet any required security level.
The need to protect products against counterfeiting is present in numerous segments ranging from pharmaceuticals, spare parts and electronics, food, wine and spirits to high-end cosmetics.
Protect any brand with standard or customised anti-counterfeit solutions from Avery Dennison. Our range includes but is not limited to:
SECURITY HOLOGRAMSMicro-embossed metallised papers or films with 2D/3D holographic diffraction patterns. Can be registered with the Industrial Hologram Manufacturers Association (IHMA) database for further security.
SECURITY PAPERSOBA-free (Optical Brightening Agent) papers with/without fibres (visible or UV luminescent). It is possible to integrate customised fibers, watermarks and threads into the label material. Suitable for official documents that require authentication.
SECURITY THREADSThreads made of film material can be inserted into the label, visibly or covertly. They can be customised with messages, fluorescent print coatings or holographs.
ADVANCED PRINT IN LAMINATESUV and customised text print in various colours and designs can be integrated into the label material both on the front and on the back of the construction.
IR TAGGANTSThese are special additives in label materials that can be detected with special IR readers.
Different products require different types of protection. Contact our Select Solutions experts to learn more about the available features and to select the right security solution. The appropriate choice depends on:
1. Understanding available security features
2. Knowing what level of security required
3. Determining which security solutions can complement available resources
Carefully assessing these factors will help manufacturers, packagers, label developers and printers incorporate multilayer security features into a secure strategy, ideal for protecting any brand at an optimal level.

The Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for Classification and Labelling of Chemicals is an international, standardised set of criteria for labelling chemical containers, drums and barrels, to communicate hazard information and safety precautions. GHS was developed by the United Nations in order to minimise the risk of errors in handling and the regulatory burdens on chemical producers.
GHS CLASSIFICATIONThe scope of GHS covers all hazardous chemicals, substances and mixtures in all uses - production, transportation, storage, workplace use and consumer use. It does not apply to food, pharmaceuticals or cosmetics.
GHS uses a two-part classification to identify: > The type of hazard (such as flammable or corrosive to metals)
> The degree of hazard (with Category 1 being the most severe)
Once a chemical is classified, the hazards must be communicated through labels and safety data sheets (SDS’s). GHS standardizes six basic elements that must be represented uniformly on labels.
> Hazard symbols or pictograms surrounded by a red diamond - and red diamonds cannot be left blank
> Signal words such as ‘danger’ or ‘warning’ > Hazard statements such as ‘fatal if swallowed’ > Precautionary statements regarding storage, disposal or handling
> Product identifier to define chemical ingredients > Company identifier
BENEFITS OF GHSAcross the globe, this harmonization brings safety benefits to everyone exposed to chemicals, throughout their production, transportation and use, by:
> Increasing the quality and consistency of hazard information
> Enhancing comprehension of hazard information > Reducing the compliance burdens and communication costs associated with developing multiple labels and SDS’s
Harmonizing labels worldwide with GHSConsistent classification and communication of safety hazards for chemicals

Digital – Have it your wayComplete solutions for digital printing - HP Indigo, Xeikon, UV and water-based inkjet
Many have predicted that digital print will cross the chasm and go mainstream in 2016, creating a range of innovative labels and packaging. The business drivers include improved speed, operational economics, and greater ink & media range – there is no doubt that inkjet is leading the way.
WATER-BASED INKJET FILMS AND PAPERSFaster printers, excellent print quality – and minimal capital investmentWater-based inkjet technology might have taken off even faster, but there has been a limited number of suitable materials, especially films, making printers and converters nervous about investing in new technology.
That has changed with the new films now available for water-based inkjet printers. These films deliver outstanding printing results, and high-performance coatings open up new processes and new markets for inkjet applications – such as food, pharmaceutical, chemical, logistics, and GHS
(Globally Harmonised System) labelling. The new materials join an extensive existing Avery Dennison range of glossy/matt paper products for water-based inkjet.

Luis Mingueza, technical sales specialist, LPM Spain, Water-based Inkjet 1.0
“One of our customers was originally looking for a filmic label material in 2013, but we had printability problems with the only synthetic material available. The customer therefore opted for an existing product on the market, but our technical team was told that labels were not sticking to drums properly in wet conditions.
Gerard Fontanet, field sales representative, LPM Spain, Water-based Inkjet 2.0
“Our customer was very pleased with the performance of WBIJ PP TOP GLOSS WHITE after the print test. We were able to provide a certificate that proved the technical specs of our adhesive, and we responded very quickly to allow end-user testing. Alongside close sales and technical support, our team was able to offer Mix and Match tools that met precise customer needs.”
Angel Gea, technical sales specialist, LPM Spain, Water-based Inkjet 3.0
“Our customer is happy with our product offering, but something unforeseen arose at the end user. Their application involved drums being kept outdoors for long periods of time, and we recommended WBIJ PE127 MATT WHITE with BS5609 certification – and it has been working perfectly since. We gave this customer what they wanted very quickly, and we were able to demonstrate a depth and breadth of expertise, products and support.

Lubricant and oil cans pose major labelling challenges. Ingredients are oily, aggressive and possibly hazardous, and container surfaces can make adhesion difficult. Furthermore, the oil-filling process takes place at elevated temperatures, which makes the containers expand and contract. This hot-filling process puts strain on the label material, and pleads and bubbles must be avoided at all times for optimal brand appeal.
The dedicated Avery Dennison adhesives S277 and S477 perform well under the most demanding labelling conditions. They cope with rough, smooth, HDPE or metal surfaces, and they are able to resist very significant environmental pressures. Where labels are applied straight after blow moulding of the container, our well-known S277 is suggested. For situations where labels are applied on the filling line of the oil brand, S477 can meet the challenge.
Avery Dennison oil can labels meet the additional challenge of high shelf appeal, thanks to a wide variety of gloss or silver face stocks, and they also ensure reliable automatic application.
PORTFOLIO CHARACTERISTICS > Labels are often applied immediately after production of the containers, or on the filling lines
> Adhesives must cope easily with low energy surfaces and changes in container shape
> Shelf appeal is a priority
APPLICATION AREAS > Lubricant bottles > Oil cans

Tyres present unique labelling challenges for brands and label converters alike, whether creating marketing or product identification labels. A rough, low surface energy makes specialist labelling technology essential. Missing labels mean lost profits and a tyre often has to withstand very heavy handling/storage challenges long before it ever makes its way on to a car wheel.
Both brand labels and energy labels are now a standard requirement, with the latter now compulsory in the EU (since November 2012).
Avery Dennison offers the high performance labelling materials needed to make sure that labels look good and stay in position, whether applied to the tread or vulcanised along with the tyre. Extensive segment experience means we can ensure that productivity remains high throughout, from the conventional print converting phase all the way through to thermal transfer printing by end-users.
PORTFOLIO CHARACTERISTICS > Excellent heat and abrasion resistance for vulcanised labels
> Excellent thermal transfer printability where required > Rubber-friendly higher adhesive coat weights > Production-friendly gum patterns to eliminate bleeding > Application specific coat weights (winter/summer, hairy/shaven)
> Special silicone systems for easy automatic dispensing > Back-side siliconisation option to avoid labels sticking to liner
> In-depth technical sales support available to support specific brand owner application requirements
