Watershed Features
Activity1. Find the watershed your hometown is located in. 2. Download the watershed and look at your town. 3. To complete this activity, use the transparency slider and the information links
under the Places tab. After each question, uncheck the information links that you used so that you can see the information for the next question. Keep Boundary Line, Watershed Characteristics, and USGS Identifier checked. Don’t forget to check the legend of the feature you are looking at!
4. Questionsa. Links: Land Cover 2001 and Land Cover 2001 Legend. What surrounds the
area? Urban, cropland, forest, etc.? b. Links: Streams. Are there streams nearby? What is their flow rate? (The
legend explains the flow rate.)c. Links: Population 2000 and Population Legend. What was the population
per sq km of the area in 2000? Did it change from 10 years before? d. Links: Elevation and Elevation Legend. When looking at elevation, is your
hometown located at the lower, higher, or middle elevation range of the overall watershed?
