1959 – Biomass RootsBoiler business in Europe.

The history of DP CleanTech Europe A/S is founded on a solid base of many years experience of manufacturing and erecting small and medium power plants, biomass boilers and waste incinerators. The factory in Tonder, Denmark has existed since 1959. During its lifetime, the factory has maintained its position as a leading manufacturer of components for high pressure, high temperature systems for the most advanced pressurized installations in the world.

Key milestones

1959: Factory in Tonder was founded.1971: First biomass power plant put into operation.1990: First straw fired power plant put into operation.2002: Boiler Works founded to take over operations at Tonder.2004: DP CleanTech founded and later acquired the Boiler Works business in Tonder.

2004 – Migration East Awakening of biomass power in China.

The DP CleanTech Group Ltd* was founded in 2004 and was the first company in China to study, develop and apply the technology of directly burning biomass to generate electricity and heat. Denmark has long been recognized as a leader in biomass technology; the country converts 80% of its agricultural and forestry waste into power and heat. DP CleanTech saw the potential and set about tackl ing the massive opportunity presented by China, a country that produces over 800 million tons of biomass annually from agriculture alone, some 320 times the production in Denmark. From modest beginnings, DP CleanTech was setup in Beijing with a small but dedicated team and licensed the advanced biomass technology from Bioener in Denmark. Two years later, the Group put into commercial operation China’s very first biomass dedicated power plant based on high pressure, high temperature technology. Since then, DP CleanTech has built a new power plant on average every 2 months becoming the largest biomass energy provider in China with 420 MW of installed capacity.*Between 2004 and 2008 DP CleanTech operated under it sold name Dragon Power.

DP CleanTech’s sister company was founded to manage biomass to power generation business in China. 2006: Shanxian biomass fired power plant put into operation.

2007 – Global Expansion DP CleanTech accelerating biomass power globally.

In 2007 DP CleanTech acquired Boiler Works in Europe gaining access to the European market and providing the platform to accelerate its deployment in Europe. In 2009 DP CleanTech made its second acquisition in Europe, acquiring Bioener in Denmark to own all the relevant technology and know how. Significant investments in people, technology and manufacturing have resulted in new customers in Europe, China and South East Asia. Now with an expertise and detailed understanding in combustion of over 50 different fuel types DP CleanTech continues to expand its horizons and looks to promote the benefits of high efficiency, stable biomass combustion. As DP CleanTech looks towards 2020 and beyond there will be a continued relentless focus on delivering the highest quality, built for purpose solutions and excellent customer service, combining the benefits of both localization and our global philosophy.

We don't sell technology and we don't sell equipment. We deliver a solution that is guaranteed to work. Both organic and non-organic residues provide an excellent opportunity to create energy, however they are complex and non-homogeneous fuels that require a deep understanding and a customized approach. ...is tailored to your fuelsFuel assessmentThe first and most vital step requires an extensive evaluation and understanding of the fuel type and condition. Many variations in form, chemical composition, calorific value and moisture content exist between fuels which provides the necessary inputs in design. On the biomass side, DP CleanTech has worked with over 50 fuel types. Capitalizing on this knowledge, DP CleanTech will work closely with you during the planning phase to define the right fuel mix, fuel preparation and fuel handling.

DP CleanTech’s core competence derives from its origins and experience in design and engineering of biomass combustion systems. DP CleanTech uses CFD software to simulate the internal combustion conditions of the boiler. Each new project is tailor designed according to the specific fuels, location and local conditions. CommissioningWe know from experience that commissioning a biomass power plant is not the same as a fossil fuel plant. Our fully qualified and experienced team are dedicated to only biomass plants, a requirement that we believe is essential for a plant to obtain stable maximum capacity. Commissioning involves all the preparation steps between a plant being installed and being fully operational. For example: plant testing, preparing documentation, training operating staff and making appropriate changes for automation.

DP CleanTech’s clean energy solutions are founded upon advanced high temperature, high pressure technology, each custom designed to consume different types of agricultural, forestry and non-organic waste. The increased steam parameters accelerate the steam flow and allows for notable improvements for the electrical efficiency capability of the plant.

Tailored combustion engineeringDP CleanTech individually tailors boiler island plants to accommodated the chemical variations in fuels and ensures the plants, efficiency and availability is optimized.

High pressure high temperature technology.Furthermore DP CleanTech implements measures to recover heat wherever possible and maximize thermal efficiency. A low outlet flue gas temperature (120-130 °C) and efficient combustion result in higher boiler efficiencies (90%-92%).

Improved return on investment High thermal efficiency design allows you to significantly reduce the fuel consumption of your biomass power plant, therefore generating increased cash flow and return on investment.

Global agriculture produces millions of tons of residues every year, mainly in the form of straw. DP CleanTech is the world leader in straw-firing, having built over 25 straw power plants in Europe and China. The straw fired boiler consists a complete range of specially designed components including the water cooled vibrating grate which is defined to handle different types of straw like wheat, corn and rice straw.

Straw Feeding system

DP CleanTech has developed its own unique feeding system to handle straw bales and the complicated physical properties that exist in straw.

Improved availabilityDP CleanTech’s straw bale feeding system has already proven to be extremely effective resulting in trouble free operation for clients and enabling high plant availability.

Improved efficiencyThe automated system includes scarifiers and ensures the bales are fed in to the boiler at a rate and density that secures an efficient combustion.

Water cooled vibrating grate

DP CleanTech’s water cooled vibrating grate was developed and designed specifically for the combustion of biomass fuels and has proven to be the best combustion system for herbaceous and woody fuels.

Improved availabilityThe water cooled vibrating grate is one of the most reliable combustion grates in the world. The vibration inhibits the formation of large slag particles, liable with straw and waste wood fuels, which makes it suitable for burning fuels with high slagging and sintering propensities. Another advantage is the vibrating equipment has less moving parts than moving grates and thus requires less maintenance.

Improved efficiencyThe vibration movement and air distribution system optimizes the combustion process evenly across the grate. The fully automated system is one of the contributing factors to DP CleanTech achieving boiler efficiencies of 90-92%.

Wood fired technology

Wood chip biomass can serve as an excellent fuel for energy production and DP CleanTech has developed its technology to optimize its potential. Woody fuels tend to have higher moisture contents and therefore offer opportunities for further recovery of heat through flue gas condensation. In suitable circumstances DP CleanTech’s condensing scrubber has boosted boiler efficiencies to 101%.

DP CleanTech has developed its own specific boiler island technology to serve the rapidly growing waste to energy market. The technology is also easily adapted to many forms of process residue.

The Step GrateSFA’s step grate is the only completely flat combustion grate in the world.

Improved fuel flexibilityAlthough capable of low density high calorific fuels like wheat straw, the Step Grate is an extremely efficient combustion platform and ideally handles more difficult fuels like waste wood, peat and municipal solid waste. The step grate is even able to handle metals with low melting points such as aluminum (tin foil, bear cans, etc.) or zinc (galvanized nails, etc.) which may cause problems for the vibration grate.

Improved availabilityThe Patented water cooled grate plates are used for problematic fuels with a calorific value greater than 12 MJ/kg, this allows our customers to achieve extended grate lifetimes.

Mixed fuel

DP CleanTech understands the importance of securing a reliable fuel supply and has focused much o f i t s r esou rces on p rov i d i ng technologies that help mitigate this potential problem. Mixed fuel power plants offer greater flexibility and lowers dependence on one single fuel. However, when mixing fuels the variations in properties such as moisture content, ash content and fusion temperatures pose increased chal lenges to secur ing opt imal performance and require further

modifications to the boiler design. Many of DP CleanTech’s power plants are designed to handle multiple fuels and we have developed a rich experience in building custom designed integrated mixed fuel power plants which convert waste residues into steam at specified output for the production of heat and electricity.

DP CleanTech owns some of the best technology in the world for biomass combustion so it is important for us to maintain and develop our core competence by supporting product research and development. Constant communication with customers to meet their requirements keeps us ahead of the game and enables us to push new boundaries whilst maintaining a market leading position in terms of price and quality.

CFD software

The key to designing a biomass power plant with superior performance is to master the main design data such as thermal calculations and internal combustion conditions of the boiler. With increasing variations in fuels for biomass power plants there is a growing demand for flexibility in boilers. DP CleanTech’s simulation labs in China and Denmark use Fluent CFD software to accurately simulate boiler combustion behaviour, the technology has enabled us to achieve breakthroughs in realizing optimum fuel mixes and mastering fabrication technology of high temperature corrosion resistant materials as well as improving the service life for high temperature heat surfaces.

Shanxian was the first biomass power plant in China, the plants availability has been increasing each year since 2006 and has now reached 8000h/y.

Boiler efficiency : 92%

The plant is designed for a net nominal load of 25 MWe, but is able to perform a net peak load of 26.3 MWe. The plant consumes more than 160,000 tons of straw per year.

Boiler efficiency : 87%

Siauliai supplies electricity to 30,000 households and covers 45% of the cities district heating.

Recovering heat from the flue gas condensation enables a net plant efficiency of 101%.

Boiler efficiency : 93.1 %

The Liaoyuan power plant was one of the first straw fired power plants in China and runs on locally sourced fuels mainly agricultural residues such as corn straw.
