AbstractThe main task of the abstract is to provide a clear message what your thesis delivers with the assumption that an interested reader will continue reading your thesis.Abstract summarises the thesis intent and content in a dry, condensed form without any unnecessary phrases. No conclusions are allowed and maximal size is one single page. The following text starting with words Lorem ipsum… is just a filler without any meaning and has to be replaced by your own content. Lorem ipsum is used to give you a feeling how much space you actually have for your abstract and how it will look like.Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. ZusammenfassungMake sure that your German abstract is consistent with the English one. It is good idea to let a native German speaker to correct it for you. This applies even for native German speakers themselves.Ut rhoncus, purus et laoreet ultricies, erat ligula suscipit libero, laoreet pretium risus ipsum at turpis. Chapter 1 IntroductionThis template is supposed to help you with a basic structure and formatting of your thesis. Not every detail is covered in the template as there are too many of them. But the major things are solved and done for you. Focus on your thesis content and stick to the provided formatting. The template will not tell you how to write your thesis, you are encouraged to look up how to write a good scientific text yourself, for example Writing and Thinking Well (Clement 2008).

1.1 General InformationThis template foresee a thesis formatted as a double-sided book printed on A4 paper. The double-sided formatting has some advantages over single-sided format:

- less paper consumption- different headers on the left and right side helping with navigation- book layout is more comfortable to read

Note that quality of thesis is not measured by amount of the pages or its thickness, but by the quality of the content. Therefore the line spacing is set to 1.The font used in the thesis is Palatino Linotype font family, font size 11pt. The thesis body text is using Standard layout. Never use the font controls in the thesis directly, always apply a format layout to your content! The page layout is defined by the 2,5cm border along the whole page with added 1cm for the binding at the inside long edge.

1.2 Document StructureThe thesis is divided into 3 main parts called:

- Front matter- Main matter- Back matter

The naming is a typographic convention and is connected to the book structure. The front matter encompasses all pages in the thesis up to the start of the real content. The main matter is the core of your work and contains all chapters and appendices. The back matter is used for references and list only. Each part will be shortly discussed and important things will be pointed out.

1.2.1 Front MatterThe front matter opens and introduces the thesis content. Typical front matter has following pages:

- Title page- Dedication*- Affidavit/Eidesstattliche Erklärung- Abstract

1

Content Formatting

- Zusammenfassung- Acknowledgements*- Content

Pages marked with * are optional and you can skip them if you wish. The front matter is using roman letters in the footer. Pages of the front matter are never listed in the thesis content.

1.2.1.1 Title PageThe form of the title page is given. Stick to it and just edit the text fields Author and Title. If your thesis have no subtitle, delete the subtitle text.Carefully evaluate and update the text field under author’s name that contain thesis number and supervisor.

1.2.1.2 DedicationThe dedication page is optional and you can skip it. Dedication depends on author’s taste. Usually theses are dedicated to families, wife and/or children.

1.2.1.3 Affidavit/Eidesstattliche ErklärungThe page declares that author followed the good scientific practice and its wording is given by the study department. Evaluate and edit field Name and Date only.

1.2.1.4 Abstract/ZusammenfassungThe abstract summarizes the thesis. It has to fit on a single side. The abstract never contains conclusions of the work, only what is to be find in the thesis. Both language variants have to be provided. Strive to keep them consistent.

1.2.1.5 AcknowledgementsThe acknowledgements are optional. Usually you acknowledge support of your supervisor and colleagues. If you want to thank to your supervisor, make sure that you only thank for his role of guide/mentor/supervisor. Never mention any examiner.

1.2.1.6 ContentsThe last part of the front matter is list of content. The list of contents is generated and it writes out chapters and appendices of the thesis up to the depth 4. You have to enforce its update by right-clicking on it and selecting the update option.

1.2.2 Main MatterThe main matter are all chapters and appendices. The main matter is numbered with Arabic letters at the footer. In order to improve reader’s navigation in the thesis, the header lists the opened chapter and section. The quality of the main matter content makes or breaks the thesis. Spent most of your time polishing its content rather as playing with formatting around.

Acronyms

1.2.3 Back MatterThe back matter collects bibliography and lists–acronyms, symbols, pictures and tables. The lists are often placed in the front matter, however this template places them in the back matter. It is simpler to navigate to the content of your work in this way.Generally all lists generated by Word has to be forced into update by right-clicking them and selecting an update option.

1.2.3.1 BibliographyIn order to keep the reference consistent, use Word in-build reference system and/or some 3rd party tool. Montanuniversität Leoben supports, for example, Citavi (Swiss Academic Software n.d.).The reference style used in the template is Chicago. You can use other referencing styles as well, but you have to stay consistent.

1.2.3.2 Acronyms/AbbreviationsList of Acronyms, or alternatively Abbreviations, have to be organised manually as Word have no reasonable tools for this purpose. Use an invisible table and format layouts Acronym (Key) and Acronym (Value).

1.2.3.3 Nomenclature/SymbolsThe Nomenclature, alternatively named List of Symbols, summarizes the symbols used through the thesis.Unfortunately Word lacks in organising of the nomenclature so the list have to be realised manually with the help of an invisible table. For every listed symbol provide its meaning and, if applicable, a unit. You can split the list of symbols on Latin and Greek one, but only if it improves the readability should you have too many symbols.

1.3 Structural FormattingThe template provides format layouts for the main part of the thesis. The front matter and back matter only elements carry Frontmatter and Backmatter in their name respectively. The title page is very specific and its format layouts always carry the text Titlepage in the name. The rest of the format layouts is connected to the main matter. Example: The format layout Title (Frontmatter) is used at the front matter part on all page headings. The format layouts for the chapters, sections and other nested elements are summarized in Table 1. Note that you can have only 5 levels of depth in the chapter structure and 4 in appendices. The 5th chapter level is already without numbering.

Table 1: Document nested headings

Hint: If you need higher level of depth, you do something wrong. Rethink your document structure instead!Make sure you use format layouts consequently through the thesis! You will run into serious problems otherwise.

1.3.1 Page breaksIn the double-sided book layout the chapters, appendices and all lists are always starting on the odd side that is on the right side of the open book. The front matter of this template illustrates the layout. The template’s main and back matter do not.In order to enforce proper page layout, you have to manually insert a page breaks if needed. Ensure you insert a page break and not a section break!

Chapter 2 Content FormattingThe content formatting gives you some freedom, the important thing is to stay consistent. It is highly advisable if you use, for example, SPE Style Guide (Society of Petroleum Engineers 2014).

2.1 FloatsFloating elements called floats, which is figures, plots, tables and general objects, should be ideally inserted from files as images. Images should have a resolution high enough for a non-pixelated printing. If you want to use a float from other source and it would lead to a low resolution and/or quality, recreate the float yourself.Avoid use of Copy/Paste between documents, export floats as images instead. Use Copy/Paste-as-Image option in the case of Microsoft Office, or better, use Copy/Paste into Paint in order to create an image. Never use URL addresses.

2.1.1 Figures

Figure 1: Drilling in Schönkirchen; courtesy of OMV.

5

Content Formatting

Floats have to carry a caption centred under them. If the float contains material that is not in the public domain, you have to reference it. If you are using a float that cannot be referenced, mention at least its ownership. Pay an extra attention to licensing information before using any copyrighted material. When placing figure, use an invisible table to better control its placement. Note centring and border used in Figure 1. The caption is terminated with a punctuation and states the picture origin.

2.1.2 PlotsPlots are categorised as figures, see Figure 2.

Figure 2: Pore and fracture pressure gradients (Ripperger 2015)

Ensure that plots have clearly readable axis captions inclusive units. A plot without proper axis description has no value. If there are more as one curve in the plot, use a legend to clearly distinguish them.If you are using plots for comparisons, ensure they use same axis ranges and scaling. Do not manipulate reader with the plots scaling and shifted axis starting values.Avoid useless and distracting effects that add no value to your data, for example 3D charts or shadow effects applied to a simple line chart.

Acronyms

2.1.3 TablesTables are to be created/typeset directly in Word. Tables caption is to be placed under the table as by any other float. An example of the table formatting, see Table 2, is consistent with SPE Style Guide (Society ofPetroleum Engineers 2014). Forces ModeF < FS no bucklingFS < F < FH sinusoidal buckling initiatedFH < F < 2FH helical buckling initiated2FH < F helical buckling

Table 2: Buckling modes (Ripperger 2015)

2.1.4 EquationsFormatting of equations usually needs some extra work as Word has troubles to place properly equation numbering on the right-hand side. When inserting a new equation, look for a formatted gallery template named dpe Equation with a table included. It will provide you with a basic equation with an automatic equation numbering.Example: An area of circle is given by:

A=π r2 (1)

where r represents the radius. You are welcome to use more powerful equation editors as a MathType or a standalone Microsoft Equation Editor. In such a case place the equation into the middle part of the formatting table.

2.2 AcronymsThe text Finite Element (FE) method demonstrates the first emergence of an acronym. The next time only the abbreviation, FE-Method, will be used. The list of acronyms is provided at the back matter.

2.3 ReferencesThe closest automated referencing style to SPE (Society of PetroleumEngineers 2014) style is Chicago, the style used in this template.Whenever you use someone’s work or idea, you have to reference it! If you forget to do so, you are effectively stealing it and committing an offence1. Generally two main arts how someone’s work is used in thesis exist—quotation and citation. The quotation allows to repeat an author word-by-word using the quotation form:

1 The offence is called Plagiarism. This is a footnote.

7

Content Formatting

Some quoted text word-by-word. The quoted text can be shortened using three-dots inside brackets that is […].

You have to provide source of the quotation, so everyone can follow it. Quotation gives very strong credit to original author and usually provides an inspiration. Purpose of the quotation is not to Copy-Paste author’s work, but to convey an important message. It is generally less used form and you should use it as little as possible. The majority of the references are connected to indirect quotation where someone’s idea is reformulated by your own words. You are paraphrasing someone’s idea and thus every such case has to be properly referenced.Never Copy-Paste any foreign content from theses, books, papers, or unpublished technical reports into your work. It won’t be accepted even if formally correctly referenced. Note that such fragments are easily detectable as there is a noticeable change of style and goal. Some sources cannot be referenced at all. That is the case of Wikipedia where the content can be changed by anyone and its validity and quality can be highly questionable. You can use formulations from Wikipedia, but you are obliged to validate them against referenceable authoritative sources and reference those one instead.

SectionA1

Appendix A My First AppendixPurpose of an appendix is to provide some supplemental addition to the main work and/or some very details. You do not need to have an appendix in your thesis at all. The presence of an appendix does not improve the thesis quality per se.Still not sure about appendix? Example 1: Your thesis works with some dimensionless numbers that have loose definition based on their context, e.g. Reynolds number that contains a characteristic length L. Use an appendix in order to define such dimensionless numbers for your particular case.Example 2: Your thesis contains formula derived in a series of a low-level mathematical manipulations. While the derivation brings nothing ground breaking, it can be placed into appendix for reader’s convenience.
