As Officer Van Alstine was conducting his investigation one of the occupants of the vehicle fled on foot. The suspect turned and fired a 9mm semiautomatic handgun striking Officer Van Alstine in the vest from less than three feet away. The bullet struck the vest center chest and was stopped. Van Alstine was able to continue to fight and win relying on his instincts and training. Officer Van Alstine was then transported to the hospital where he was examined and released within two hours. Officer Van Alstine attributes his armor with saving his life and allowing him to stay in the fight.
