John’s Gospel

• We have been looking at John’s Gospel in order to see who Jesus is.

• We have been using John 1 as a description of Jesus, which is then expanded in the rest of the Gospel.

• Chapters 2-11 Jesus’ Ministry- 7 signs- 7+ “I AM” statements

Living: Water, Worship, Wonders• Samaria was a short cut, vv3-4• Chapter 3 Nicodemus, a good jewish man

• He meets a Samaritan woman at the well- a Samaritan, a woman, of dubious morality

• Asks for a drink v7, not sure he ever got one

• Jesus talks about her husbands, v18• I perceive you are a prophet, v19- similar reaction to Nathanael, 1:48-49

Water is Life

• The 1st sign, Ch2, says “see water, expect change”

• Water is about Life, Rev 22:1• All the water in the world, and our dependence on it, points to Life in God

• Jesus meets the woman at about the sixth hour, v6- they crucified him at about the sixth hour

- it is the crucifixion that brings life

- it opens the “tap” for the Living Water to flow

Living Water

• Living water v10, understood as running water

• Jesus talks at a heavenly level, she (we?) listen at an earthly level

• Water springing up, v14• Leaping and dancing and praising God, Acts 3- Life springing up- Life leads to worship

Leave your water pot v28

• The woman left her water pot behind• She did not need it anymore- from now on it would be welling up inside

• If you want the Living Water- you have to give up the stagnant well water

• You cannot have both• Doing the “will of the Father”, v34, is our food

Drink Daily

• Water flowing, see Ezek 47:1-12 & Rev 22:1-5

• It is a continuous flow• It is a daily, moment by moment drinking- we are to live out the life

It’s WHO you worship

• It does not matter who is doing the worship, v42, Gal 3:28

• It does not matter where, v21• It does matter WHO we worship• Worship in Spirit- God is Spirit, we need His Spirit to worship, 1:33 Jesus is the baptiser

• Worship in Truth- Jesus is the truth, 14:6- the Redemptive Revelation of who Jesus is- we can only truly worship if we know Him, as the Lamb of God, 1:29

Recognising Jesus

• Many Samaritans believed in Him, v39

• The Saviour of the World- similar to Nathanael, 1:49 Son of God

• see Philip in Acts 8• Also, Acts 1:8, Judea, Samaria and the remotest part of the world

• Jesus is the conduit down which the Living water flows, 1:51, 7:37-37

• Back to Cana• Royal official, possibly a gentile, v46

• The 1st sign was about turning water into something more than water

• The 2nd sign the water of life flows• The boy is at the point of death, v47

Following the Signs

• At the beginning He did not make himself known to her, first she caught sight of a thirsty man, then she saw a Jew, then a Rabbi, afterwards a prophet, last of all the Messiah. She tried to better the thirsty man, she disliked the Jew, she heckled the Rabbi, was swept away by the prophet, and adored the Messiah.

• The Water of Life leads to worship, which leads to wonders.
