Signs - Causes• Ulcer bad breath, trouble keeping weight and coat. Attitude/cinchy.• Colic can be related to ulcer.• 60-90 percent of horses have ulcers. Performance horse more so. • Generally horses that are pasture only not worked rarely have ulcers.• Lack of water can lead to stress and ulcers.• More than 5 lbs of gains 2X per day can lead to or complicate ulcers• Bute and Banamine can lead to ulcers. • First third of stomach lining is very sensitive.• Horse not on free choice hay or feed only couple times day.

Treatment• Gastro Guard prescription treatment 14 days is typical for initial treatment.

Prescription Only.• Ulcer Guard same strength as Gastro Guard, but scale is ¼ strength based on

how the scale is allocated on the tube. Over the counter. For prevention of reoccurrence. Typical to treat for another 28 days minimum using Ulcer Guard after initial Gastro Guard period. This help prevent reoccurrence.

• Smart Gut Ultra smart pack works well to stop reoccurrence after treatment and has a probiotic in it.

• AloeVera helpful during treatment.• Reduce stress• Increase hay to 24x7• Remove all supplements and grains and add Alfalfa hay.• Add Probiotics carefully, while needed it can complicate initially wait some time

until Ulcers are under control especially for horse not previously on probiotics.

Alternative Treatments• Omeprazole ( no power or compounded products) do not work. And

generally Omeprazole not very effective.• Zantac vet prescription 100 times human dose. Can help but not as effective

as Ulcer Guard.• Malox and Tums can help with pain but require large abouts and is needed

multiple times a day. Not effective in healing but can help with pain. Generally not recommended.

• Alfalfa high in calcium carbonate can buffer stomach acid and can help reduce pain and better than antiacids. Cubes/pellets not as effective but can help.

• Prebiotic and Probiotic helps long term in prevention. Particularly when antibiotics are administered.

• Sucralfate and Gastrulate not very effective.• If need to use NASID for pain use Equinox as it is the best one for stomach

health.
