Summary
Dr. David Jakinda Otieno is an Agricultural Economist and Senior Lecturer in the Department of
Agricultural Economics, University of Nairobi. David also coordinates the Agribusiness Management
Programme in the Department. His research interests include: Consumer Preference Analysis,
Agricultural Marketing/Commercialization, Economics of Climate Change, Livelihood Diversification,
Value Chain Analysis, Agribusiness Development, Participatory Research Methods and Policy Analysis.
David has taught Econometrics, Mathematics for Economists, Production Economics and Quantitative
Analysis of Agricultural Policy at Postgraduate level for 8 years. He has also taught various
undergraduate courses for 14 years: Agribusiness & International Trade; Agricultural Market Strategies &
Plans; Research Projects; and Managerial Economics. David also serves as a reviewer of research
proposals and papers for the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), various international
conferences and journals. He has supervised 20 Msc. students to completion in the last 8 years and is
currently supervising 4 PhD students and 15 Msc. students. David has published 21 articles in peer-
reviewed journals, 1 book, 4 book chapters, 2 book reviews, 3 discussion papers and 3 policy briefs.

November 2014 – current: Member of the Land, Livestock and Livelihoods (Triple L)
Research Initiative; www.triplel.se. This is a policy research and capacity building group
comprising collaboration among various partners focusing on restoration of degraded
landscapes in East Africa – SLU, Lund University, University of Gothenburg, Linkoping
University (Sweden), University of Copenhagen, Denmark, ILRI, ICRAF, Jomo Kenyatta
University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and the University of Nairobi.
October 2013 – June 2018: Initiated a collaborative memorandum of understanding
(MOU) between University of Nairobi and the Institute for People Institutions and Change in
Organizations – Eastern Africa (PICO-EA) on Agribusiness capacity building and
mentorship. In this collaboration, I regularly supported learning workshops on capacity
development for leadership mentoring for early career professionals in the national
agricultural research systems (NARs) in Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique and
Tanzania. Four students from the Department of Agricultural Economics of the University of
Nairobi benefited from this collaboration through field attachment, internship, graduate
fellowship and leadership mentoring.

VII) Competitive Research Grants/Projects and Collaboration
November 2013 – December 2018: assisted the Principal Investigator to implement a
collaborative research project focusing on ‘Horticulture Value Chains and Climate Change in
Smallholder Agriculture in Eastern Africa’. The research project was funded by the European
Union (EU). This was a collaborative project between Humboldt University, Haramaya
University, Karatina University and the University of Nairobi. My role in this project included
guiding research assistants, joint design and implementation of research work, organizing local
stakeholder dissemination workshops, co-supervision of 4 Masters students, preparation of
research papers for joint symposiums at international conferences. Grant Value for University of
Nairobi project component was Euro 120,000.
August 2012 – September 2013: Principal Researcher in a collaborative research focusing on
‘Analysis of consumer preferences for fruit juices in Kenya’. The research project was funded by
the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC). Grant Value: USD$15,000.
June 2012 – February 2014: Principal Researcher in ‘Analysis of Foreign Land Lease
investments in Kenya’. The research project was funded by the Centre for International
Governance Innovation (CIGI) – Africa Initiative (AI). Grant Value: USD$15,000.
October 2002 – December 2004: Co-author of a research proposal that was funded by the
Association for strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA)
to study ‘integration of gender in maize technology adoption and sharing of benefits in Siaya,

1) September 2017 – May 2018: Lead Consultant for ResearchSphere Ltd & the Agriculture and
Food Authority (AFA) Coffee Directorate, Kenya. Led the consultant group on conducting a
feasibility study on the usage of Coffee Kenya Mark of Origin and the Potential for Kenya’s Value
Added Coffee Products in Germany.

2) March 2018 – June 2018: Consultant for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United
Nations (FAO). Tasks involved leading a team of consultants (comprising an Agricultural
Economist, Food Loss Assessment expert, Gender and Social Scientist, and a Monitoring and
Evaluation expert) in assessing causes and extent of postharvest losses in five priority
commodities (maize, meat, milk, fish and rice) and developing a national postharvest
management strategy for Kenya.
3) October 2013 – June 2018: Consultant for the Institute for People, Innovation and Change in
Organizations (PICO-Eastern Africa). Tasks involved supporting a leadership mentorship of
early career professionals for national agricultural research systems (NARS) in Eastern and
Southern Africa; documentation of proceedings of high-level facilitated consensus building
workshops for policy action among multi-stakeholders from the community-based organizations,
national government systems, national agricultural research systems (NARS), international
research centres (such as CIAT, ICRISAT, IITA) and the development partners including the Bill
and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
(FAO) and; developing students’ internship programs.
4) September 2016: Consultant for the International Maize and Wheat Research Centre
(CIMMYT), Mexico. Tasks involved review of literature, analysis of survey data and preparation
of draft papers on role of varietal preferences on adaption of drought tolerant maize in Ethiopia,
Uganda and Tanzania.
5) March – July 2013: Consultant for the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA),
Ghana. Work involved a review/assessment of current priorities, capacities and needs of African
stakeholders for agricultural innovation in fifteen (15) countries in Eastern, Southern and West

(KIPPRA), Nairobi, Kenya. Tasks involved review of alternative agribusiness growth models for

Led a team of Researchers in a national survey to track the management of Constituency
Development Fund (CDF) in 25 sample constituencies from all provinces in Kenya. I was also
in the joint team that prepared the survey report, which was instrumental in the review of the CDF
Act resulting to increased budgetary allocation by the Exchequer and improved participation of
grassroots citizens in the CDF management committees.
