YOU’RE IN FOR A RIDE!

July is rolling in nicely, we’re halfway through the Holy Month and the festive lights are starting to line the streets signaling the coming of Eid Al Fitr.

For this issue of Destination Riyadh, we decided to put together a special edition that celebrates and gives insight into the men of the city. A decision that made most of the gents in our office jump out of their seats and left the rest of us intrigued.

As we were brainstorming, we found ourselves asking, “What do men want?” Someone yelled “cars!” from the back of the room followed by a dozen yes’s. Sure enough, a good portion of these pages have been crafted to make the eyes of petrol heads twinkle.

For your reading pleasure, we tracked down Talal Al Onzi, the gentleman and automotive aficionado behind the first exotic car dealership in Saudi Arabia. We’ve also invited the Mustang Club for a sit down to get your engines all revved up.

Beyond testosterone driven clichés, being a man is circumstantial but being a gentleman in this day and age, now that’s something. And so our quest took an interesting turn, we burned the midnight oil to put together a primer on how to be a “Riyadhi Gentleman.” From matters of manly manners, building your dapper closet and man caves to finding the best football café hideaways; this issue has got the men covered.

Oh but we’re far from over. July is still filled to the brim with relevant articles for everyone. Consider your inner carnivore indulged with a meaty take on steak and grills. We’ve got beauty and style low downs for our Riyadhi women too.

Destination Riyadh is a magazine that is made for you by you. We are able to churn one issue after another because of the wonderful Riyadhis setting up shop in the city, driving change in the community and simply making Riyadh a pretty awesome place to live.

Eid Mubarak and may your days be filled with joy, blessedness and laughter!

Saudi Students Win Big in 2015 Intel ISEF Competition

Thumbs Down to Swindler Tricks Twitter Users for Sympathy, Money A twitter user by the name of Sara Ibrahim managed to convince thousands of Saudi twitter users that she was a child with cancer before being uncovered. The unknown person behind the fake social media accounts had been using the images of an actual cancer survivor named Esme to solicit sympathy and donations from people. Reports indicate that the imposter had redirected inquirers that wished to help her to a bank account that belonged to a woman named Ilham Mahfooth who was allegedly a Syrian refugee in need of help. Lawyers said the deception may carry a 3 year jail sentence and a SR 2 million fine.

The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, in which as many as 1,700 students from 75 countries participated, saw six amazingly bright students from Saudi Arabia win eight medals this year. The highest accolade was Abduljabbar Alhamood’s Dudley R. Herschbach SIYSS Award, which he received for his study on temporarily genetically modifying a variety of important crops. He also won Intel ISEF Best of Category Award of $5,000 for Plant Sciences and placed first in that category. Abdulaziz Yahya Alshahrani of Alareen

School in Abha won fourth place in Biomedical and Health Sciences, Refal and Renad Mowaffaq Bougis of the 30th Secondary School in Makkah won fourth in Cellular and Molecular Biology, Noorah Ziad Alfaddagh from Al Faisaliah Islamic Schools in Khobar won fourth in Environmental Engineering, and Lulwah Ziyad Alshiha from Najd National Schools in Riyadh won fourth in Plant Sciences. We have never been more proud, and we hope to see these students become role models for the other enterprising students of the region. Congratulations!

Team Galag Concludes Gumball 3000Thumbs up to Uber Uber started a campaign, UberGive, on June 15, where drivers picked up non-perishable food donations from homes and delivered them to Albir Society so they can be assorted to help feed communities in Ramadan.

The representative Saudi team in Gumball 3000’s annual run, Team Galag, won the Spirit of Gumball3000 this year for awesome overall everything, by which we mean we loved their steampunk inspired baseball hats, their brilliant car and their name. The team drove in a Mercedes SLR with Saudi plates and what seemed to look like a slick black matte paint job and revving that really was, well, galag. We have received reports with information noting that their Snapchat had been a highlight, but this writer missed it. Till next year, Gumball 3000! And Team 37… Put your hats up for sale already, will you?

5. Themar 2015 Themar usually brings together the best of what the GCC has to offer in terms of seasonal wear. This year was no exception. The general theme was inspired by Turkey, as was evident in the abundance of masabeeh (lanterns) hanging from the ceilings and the guest tent on display in the middle.

A large number of top-notch designers from different parts of the Middle East were represented this year. From Saudi Arabia, there were Alshaikha, AlJwhara Fashion, Bazah, Dalila, Waela, Rawiah Bagabas, Shall Boutique, Sara Couture, Famed, Fatima Alsubaie, H&A Designer, Hala Alshoal, Juju, Le Voile, Madi, Marwa RMR, Mayyal, Pashmina, Memash, Miskeyana, MLML, and Nashel Designs. Anfal Designs, Qumar 14, Dar May, Nashel, Qamar, and Unica represented Kuwait, while Stola Fashion, Raw by Ayten, and HF Boutique were a great display of Emirati talent. There was also Nazeeka, from Egypt, and Ömür Karamollaoglu from Turkey. With a wide range of kaftans, turbans, jewelry, home décor, gift items, handicrafts, artworks and food available, Themar was, as usual, quite the shopping experience.

The exhibition will run from May 21 till the end of July.

Clean Your Finances With ZAKATAll you need to know about zakat.

In terms of meaning, the word Zakat is taken as “purification” and “growth.” In the light of Islamic teachings it is defined as an act, made obligatory upon every eligible Muslim, in which he or she has to give a calculated amount of his/her wealth to less fortunate people. who have been described by the teachings of the Holy Qur’an and hadith.

The teachings of the Holy Qur’an and hadith classify the people on whom Zakat should be spent, into eight groups:

"The alms are only for the Fuqara' (the poor), and Al Masakin (the needy) and those employed to collect (the funds); and to attract the hearts of those who have been inclined (towards Islam); and to free the captives; and for those in debt; and for Allah's Cause, and for the wayfarer (a traveler who is cut off from everything); a duty imposed by Allah. And Allah is All-Knower, All-Wise." [Al Quran 9:60]

1ZAKAT IS OBLIGATORY ON THESE KINDS OF WEALTH 1. Gold and Silver (or their equivalents in modern currencies)2. Tradable assets owned by one’s business 3. Grains, grapes and dates 4. Freely-grazing livestock and cattle

GRANTSIf the money you have is in the form of a grant from the government, the easiest way for you, with regards to paying zakat, is to wait until one hijri year has passed, then check your bank and pay 2.5 percent (25 out of every thousand) from whatever you have. In case you are living hand to mouth, as it were (i.e., spending it all straightaway), and you do not have enough left to reach the level of the nisaab, and a year has passed, then you are not obliged to pay zakat.

If a person’s wealth exceeds the nisaab, then they must pay zakat on their total wealth. Nisaab is equivalent to the monetary value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. Since the nisaab value constantly changes, it should be checked and calculated before paying zakat.

THERE ARE TWO KINDS OF ZAKAT Zakat on wealth, which differs from Zakat Al Fitr. Whoever pays zakat on wealth is not relieved of paying Zakat Al Fitr and vice versa.

ZAKAT ON BUSINESSESSteps you should follow while paying zakat for your business:

1. Take your current savings, all cash in hand, any tradable business inventory you own, and the value of any active investments and marketable securities you have and add them together. 2. Deduce any immediate liabilities such as your bills, payroll, insurance payments, etc. 3. Subtract your immediate liabilities from your current assets.4. The following equation may be useful to conveniently get the percentage of zakat: The amount of zakat = the value of goods in hand + cash assets + recoverable debts - debts x 2.5 percent.

The Department of Zakat and Income Tax (DZIT) is a government agency that reports to Ministry of Finance. It was established as per Ministerial Resolution no. 394, dated 1370/8/7 H. (1951/06/14).

KEEP IN MIND• Zakat cannot be paid for building, repairing or renovation of mosques.

• The money from zakat cannot

be used to pay the outstanding

debts of a person who died. If paid, such action will be considered invalid. Whoever

dies and owes zakat, his heirs

must pay it from his wealth, and

that takes precedence over the

will and inheritance.

• No zakat is due on houses, cars or buildings that a person

owns, unless one intends to trade in them.

• By reducing wealth confinement the Zakat system

makes sure the circulation of

wealth in society is fair.

This is the remarkable and rather rarified world of Talal Al Onzi, a car collector, enthusiast and owner of 7 Car Lounge, the first dealership of its kind in the Kingdom.

A year since its inception, 7 Car Lounge has already made a mark in the international automotive scene. It has been ranked as one of the Top 10 exotic car dealerships in the world, pitted

against older contemporaries in Dubai, Tokyo, Europe and multinational franchises.

A Boy and the FerrariAt first encounter, Al Onzi exudes the stature you would expect from a businessman. Apart from being the owner of 7 Car Lounge, he is the Chairman of Baraa Trading, whose portfolio includes Nozomi, Disk Dr and Rent-A-Car.

Al Onzi navigates through conversations as a gentleman would, being observant before speaking in concise and well thought of responses. Sitting across from him in his office adorned with classic memorabilia, you get a sense of a Saudi man of character, classy mindedness and, well, fun. The fun part comes when you start talking about cars his motor head syndrome emerges.

Al Onzi shared how his love affair with cars started. “I was 12 years old, my father took me and my brother, Adel to a showroom on King Fahad Road. There I saw the Ferrari F40 for the first time in my life. It was love at first sight,” he jokes. “Since that day, I would drag my father and brother to visit it every Friday. It became a ritual for us three, I would spend hours and hours just looking at the F40, marveling and studying it.”

It was a valid infatuation by any auto aficionado’s standard. After all, the F40 is dubbed to this day as the ‘greatest supercar the world has ever seen’ by no other than Jeremy Clarkson.

It took years but eventually, Al Onzi did get to buy his first F40 in 2008. “It’s still my favorite car, hands down. I’ll choose it over any other,” says the man with over 50 other collectible vehicles in their Riyadh and Dubai garages.

Page 22: DR Issue 29

DESTINATION RIYADH JULY 201520

The dealership can pride itself in having sold exotic cars that are considered legends in the market. Their list includes two Pagani Huayras (one with a completely blue carbon fibre exterior), two Ferrari LaFerraris, a McLaren P1, multiple Porsche 918 Spyders and a Ferrari F40.

According to Adel, a motor head in his own right with an affinity for Jaguars and Porsches, the lounge is more than just a dealership. As the executive at helm of the day to day business, he explains, “Car collection is an enigmatic pursuit but one, which with the help of professionals, is worthwhile.”

In the Business of Selling MythsYoung men have a natural affinity for cars and as they grow older it becomes mere enthusiasm. This was not the case for Al Onzi; his relentless passion for cars spilled over into his adult life and is the fuel for creating a one-stop shop for collectors.

“You have to do what you love. Right after graduating, I borrowed some cash from the family, which was less than SR 200,000. I moved to Dubai for a while, it was known as the market for exotic cars to learn how the business goes. I started with buying and selling kits, trading between the Kingdom and UAE.”

Al Onzi has been in the business for over 12 years now. He opened 7 Car Lounge in 2014. He continues to run the car gallery with his brother, Adel, who serves as the managing director. C

The elite lounge is a place for us and our like minded clients. It is only open for 77 members. Twenty-five

of the slots have been filled already. Aspiring

members should have at least bought $2 million worth of cars from the dealership and have

a shared passion for automotive.

— Adel Al Onzi, Managing Director

“Our goal is to provide unique services that, up until now, no one else has been able to offer in the market. Seven is my favorite, lucky number but also, it stands for the seven services,” Talal said.

From restoration, to getting an elusive exotic car straight from the factory or off the market, to vintage cars with a story – the place is a motor head’s Disneyland. And if the automobiles are not enough to show for it, at the back of the showroom is a literal gentleman’s backroom accessible through biometric recognition for petrol heads.

Collecting as a Solid InvestmentBecause cars are not directly connected to the global economy, it does not carry the same risks as investments that rely on the financial markets. While others may think that car collecting is merely a rich man’s lavish pursuit, it in fact is a viable and profitable endeavor if you know what you’re doing.

Supercars and exotic units can change value overnight, depending on the demand. Vintage cars are in a whole different category. Really rare cars like the Maybach for example, don’t get sold in a dealership; you have to go to the annual auctions.

Al Onzi’s tip for first time investors “Familiarize yourself thoroughly with what you intend to buy – don’t purchase blindly. Once you find a classic or vintage car you are interested in, find an

authorized car consultant to inspect it and also advise you on the value of it. To protect your investments, you need to equally invest in a garage, especially in Riyadh. The weather here is the number one enemy in maintaining your cars.”

In ending our talk, Talal emphasized on what he says is the most important part of being a petrol head, “Don’t let your car get stuck in the garage, it’s not healthy for the car or you. Drive it. Enjoy the ride.”

Mondo TaxiIf you don’t mind taking a taxi instead of riding in a private car, Mondo Taxi is the service to use. They screen their drivers and cars fairly well; so far we haven’t had to ride a beat up limousine from their fleet. Their GPS drop pin is quite accurate in the city, which means less hassle in needing to call the driver and giving the exact location. The prices can be metered or you can try your hand at negotiating. What makes Mondo Taxi a good option is their consistency in getting clean-cut drivers and cars as compared to other similar services. They do have fewer cars compared to the next one on the list, so it’s best to use when you have a few minutes of waiting time to spare.

Payment: CashWeb: mondotaxi.com

UberUber is an internationally renowned service. However, you need to sign up with your credit card, as it doesn’t accept any other form of payment. It is definitely more expensive than other transportation services around. There’s always a water bottle in your ride. For long trips around and outside the city, they have fixed flat rates. There are two car options: low cost Uber X starts with a base rate of SR 6 and adds 0.50 per minute. Minimum fare is SR 12. Uber black is the original Uber, which starts its base rate at SR 9 with a minimum fare of SR 20.

Easy Taxi If you don’t mind taking a taxi instead of riding in a private car, Easy Taxi is the service to use. We haven’t come across any other taxi services with such fast arriving cars. There’s always a 100 percent guarantee that a cab will reach you within minutes of requesting one. The taxis are mostly clean, however, not always. At first they didn’t really have a dedicated system for fares: you could either negotiate the prices or go along with the meter system. Fare rate is around 10-5 riyals more than what you would pay a normal cab.

The best thing about Careem is their occasional offers and free-

ride promotions. They are very generous about that.

Taxi PixiTaxi Pixi uses the same concept as Careem. However, the app interface is a bit cluttered. They have two kinds of trips: one way or car rentals. Each kind of trip offers four different types of cars. Cars can also be rented for 4 hours, 8 hours or for a full day. Prices depend on your location but often start at above SR 18. They give you a receipt either by email or on your app itself after completing a trip. Cars are always clean and the drivers courteous.

Payment: Cash or credit Web: easytaxi.com

Payment: CashWeb: taxipixi.com

CareemCareem provides easy sign up and bookings with their app, which is available for download on all platforms. It’s very straightforward and easy to use. Once you sign up, they prompt you if you need to be picked up right at the moment or if you would like to book a ride for later. If you have chosen a drop-off location, the app shows you an estimate amount, of course depending on the type of car you have chosen.

Most of their cars are on time and the chauffeurs are very well mannered.

We recently met up with Mishal Al Yami, Co-Founder and President of the Mustang Club KSA which is currently one of the largest and most successful car clubs in the Kingdom.

How many Mustang owners have joined the club? There are over 500 members in the club, which accounts for about a quarter of all Mustang drivers in the country. In the future, we envision that at least 80 percent of all Mustang buyers in Saudi will be associated with the club. We also hope that people who walk out of the dealership with a Mustang get a membership at the club.

Mishal Al Yami and the MUSTANG CLUB KSA

Page 27: DR Issue 29

DESTINATIONRYD.COM 25

What perks does the club offer to its members? There is a small fee for joining the club which allows members to enjoy many benefits that outweigh the cost of joining. Mustang Club KSA members get discounts on car parts and on maintenance costs at the Ford dealership. We’ve also partnered with some clothing stores and restaurants/cafes to give promotions to our members. We have a club center where members can conduct meetings and enjoy facilities like free Internet. It’s basically like a second home where our members can come to relax.

How does Al Jazirah Ford help you grow?Al Jazirah Ford currently helps us with sponsorships and provides financial support for events and travel expenses. We hope to strengthen our partnership with Al Jazirah

Ford further, and improve our club even more.

Will the club become a marketing tool to increase Mustang sales in the country? Do you think more people will buy Mustangs to join the club? It’s already happening. There have been cases where people sell their other sports cars and buy a Mustang in order to join the club. We also let some friends of members join the club, and they eventually buy Mustangs to become true members of the club. Our club will bring more Mustang buyers, but more importantly, better Mustang buyers.

In what ways has Mustang Club KSA benefitted society? We make sure the club and its members benefit society and try to show that our club is not just about cars. Our club is

the first in the country to have partnered with Ensan Charity Committee for nonprofit to provide car entertainment events, like professional drifting shows, as well as some PlayStation and football challenges with trophies and gifts for the children at Ensan.

Page 28: DR Issue 29

DESTINATION RIYADH JULY 201526

Our members have also participated in blood donation drives and our racing team helps us educate members, as well as the general public, about responsible driving on roads. We organized a few sessions about safe driving which were open to the public.

What are some responsibilities that the club members hold in the society? We really want to channel the nature of good behavior into our club. We have some guidelines about what we expect from our members. If anyone, even myself, breaks these rules, they’ll be removed from the club. We also govern each other’s actions, especially in terms of driving. For example, once a member sent a mass Whatsapp message about

the dangers of texting while driving because he caught one of our members doing it. We are like a family in this club, and the action of one can affect the image of everyone.

How do other car clubs compete, and do you encourage competition? What makes us special is the readiness and coverage.

While other clubs may actually have more members, our club is more active. We regularly attend car events and meet-ups. We ensure that our facilities and backstage equipment are always ready. We definitely encourage the formation of other car clubs. We’ve helped in creating new car clubs and getting them accredited from SAMF. We helped in the foundation of Mustang Club Jordan and kick-started their club.

Any further comments? We are really excited about the future of Mustang Club Jeddah because this is just the beginning. Car culture is a great thing, and we are innovators in this sector. We are sure there is more to come because there are many who share the passion for cars.

RULES OF A RIYADHI GentlemanA matter of manly manners in maneuvering life in the city.

By Johara Al Mogbel and Jou Pabalate

Automotive MaintenanceModern knights need a steady steed. Consider your car as your air-conditioned chariot.• Wash your car at least twice a month, in and out.

• Check your coolant especially during this season. You do not want you or your car to overheat in the middle of King Fahad Road.

• Check your tires constantly. Underinflated or cracked tires in this weather spells KABOOM.

• Sun shades are a must in the summer, unless you want your interiors and your bum crisp. Abu Riyalin stores have them for SR 10 – 25.

DrivingRoad rage is unattractive.True gentlemen do not transform into the hulk when dealing with errant drivers. When confronted with continued pigheadedness, one is advised to get in one’s car and drive away. When driving, tread lightly on the gas pedal. A gentleman must always take heed of killing other passengers for the sake of saving three minutes, as murdering someone while speeding is quite unseemly.Automotive Yoga is not a

thing. Never have your foot raised on your chair or your toes cooled by the AC. Definitely not with your windows open too.

Working Out A gentleman goes to the gym for the purpose of working out, not to take selfies or photos of their uncovered abs, chests and appendages for Snapchat.Bodybuilding must be approached with caution. One must not be too proud to not bother asking a professional trainer before engaging in weightlifting activities. Should one not have the time to go to the gym, a Riyadhi gentleman finds a way to stay active, even if it’s just in the comfort of his home.

Traveling Gentlemen respect the laws and the culture of countryhe is visiting. A true gentleman does not embarrass his nation by behaving unbecomingly.A true gentleman keeps his appendages to himself, and should the flight prove to be unbearable for his delicate calves, seek permission from the passenger to place his presumably socked feet in their general vicinity. Should the passenger be a woman, however, don’t even think of it.

Office Ethics A true gentleman is polite and courteous to his co-workers. A true gentleman must always keep his workspace clean and tidy. One’s workspace represents the work ethic of a person. Also, an office is usually shared with other people, and one must be careful not to offend others with a horribly kept desk.

Want to look a tad bit more put together? Here are the classic items every Riyadhi needs in his closet.By Jou Pabalate

THE RIYADHI MAN’S STYLE ESSENTIALS

Traditional is the New Modern

The thobe and the shemagh are essential pieces for any Saudi or Khaleeji. It’s the quickest way to look dapper without making too much of an effort (which is why we don’t understand how Hollywood keeps on getting it so wrong.)

Essentials:

Thobe five 100 percent cotton white ones for Summer, two colored ones for winter.

The style of thobes tend to vary from region to region or country to country. However, as the Najdis in the office were keen to emphasize – a clean, well-ironed and unadorned thobe is the preferred one in Riyadh.

ShemaghMind your mirzam. Due to popular demand,

HERE ARE THE BASIC ONES1 Bint Al Bakkar2 Butterfly3 Cobra

CufflinksThis is the splash of color you can give to your thobe. It’s a staple accessory especially if you’re wearing your thobe ensemble for official business or to a formal gathering.

Iqal one to two. This black woven ring is used to keep the shemagh or ghutra in place.

FACT BIT: The iqal is said to have a Bedouin pragmatic origin. According to stories, it was initially used to pin the camel’s front right leg in order to keep it from moving. The tribesmen would then put it over their heads to keep their hands free while riding or shepherding the camels.

ThaqiyahWhite cap underneath to hold the shemagh in place.

Bisht It’s an investment and you will need one eventually for weddings and other formal occasions.

•Semi-transparent thobes and with that, going undershirt-less. You know how some try to do away with Sirwal? Yeah, don’t do that. It’s not a trend and it will never be one.

• Cap, high tops and thobes – like, why? By the remote chance that you’ll be attending a basketball or baseball game, it really still doesn’t work.

• One of the wonderful accidental benefits of a thobe is you get to hide your kirsha. You obviously lose out on this benefit when your thobe is hugging you in all the wrong places.

The 20 somethings for the twenty-somethingThere comes a time in a man’s life when he needs to start looking like a man, a big part of that is having the right items in your closet.

TRAVEL IN STYLE

By Felwa Alhudaithy

It would be joyful to jet set with huge trunks of Louis Vuitton, to go to the Far East and bring green tea. It would be marvelous to be a character in one of Agatha Christie’s novels and spend winters in Egypt exploring the city, buying every miniature pharaoh in sight. Touring new lands is an integral part of growing up. It makes the man, it makes the woman and it even makes the child.

We travel, some of us forever, to seek other states, other lives, other souls.

-Anaïs Nin, The Diary of Anaïs Nin

I remember reading this quote for the very first time in high school. I felt that my journey, wherever it may lead me, would always be a part of a bigger picture. Whenever I feel a rut coming, I urge myself to seek new lands, to meet new people, to hear their stories, to explore their wisdom, if only to widen my horizons, if only to have fun.

There was a time not long ago when travel was considered a luxury, a time when people took it to heart to wear their best, to introduce themselves by what they bring from far off places. It would be an adventure in itself to travel like Elizabeth Taylor during the Burton years. I was recently blessed

to visit Tokyo. I have to admit that I’m fresh off the holiday wagon, but even through the sleep-deprived holiday blues, I’m content in my pursuit of happiness.

Although walking through the Sakura filled parks of Japan was a vision from a dream I’ve had for as long as I remember, it was eating sushi from the most adorable chefs that got me weak in the stomach.

MY ADVICE• Don’t forget to charge your camera; you’ll want to document life as it happens. Try a Polaroid for a vintage outlook of your trip and instant gratification.

• Dress like your favorite screen vixen. Brigitte Bardot’s style in “A Very Private Affair” sums up my aspirations as a chic tourist. A basket bag, kitten heels and high-waist pants, you’ll look like a 60s postcards and you’ll feel like a million dollar baby.

• Try the local street food.

• Skip the malls and walk into concept stores that stock local designers. Invest in that one item that will tell the story of the city, the timeless item, a living embodiment of your trip.

• The classic Luxe pocket size city guides series is a must for discovering a few spots from the fashion insider’s checklist.

Sometimes all you need is to disappear and abandon technology and the chaos of modern city life. Whether your skiing in the Alps or cruising the Mediterranean for some sunshine, turn off your phone and live the moment.

Don’t be afraid to rub shoulders with locals. Get them talking, listen to their stories, be part of the hustle and bustle. Walk through old mansions, touch the walls of nations that came before us, breathe in the culture. It’s just like tapping into a live time machine.

By Sohila El SaadanyGreenbox Museum is nestled in Amsterdam to expose the Dutch audience to art made by Saudis. Aarnout Helb, the museum’s founder, offered his insight on Greenbox and Saudi art.

A Piece of Saudi in Amsterdam

Although trained as a lawyer, Helb was interested in art and beauty ever since a young age. According to him, “Art just comes with life, not with any profession. Artworks are mere flowers of the mind and craftsmanship and they need to be evaluated to distinguish between nonsense and illusion, truth and genuine projection.”

He decided to open Greenbox Museum of Contemporary Art from Saudi Arabia, solely dedicated to art made by Saudis on July 12, 2008. The process for that was a long one, but Helb took such a step to try and limit misconceptions about Saudi culture. He explains, “One element to it was increased xenophobia in the Netherlands since the 1990s.

A R T S & E N T E R TA I N M E N T

Another was this open world of internet communication in which recitals and sermons from the MENA region may end up on television here without anyone to supply context or history to embed things in a manner that the majority of people understand and appreciate.”

When asked what interested him in Saudi art particularly, he replied, “I do not define anything as ‘Saudi art.’ I take an interest in what artists make in Saudi Arabia. What I find interesting is the moral position that Saudi Arabians have in the world at large, because of their connection with the land and cities from which one of the world’s most important cultures originates and always returns.” CO

What do you think of the art scene in Riyadh? Anything you’d like to see changed? I’ve been away for 10 years and I've been surprised by the new wave of energy and hunger for art washing over the city. It is very encouraging and exciting. What got you started? The need to escape reality leading to a much more real world deep inside my mind. Why do you art?Because without it, all meaning is lost.

Is your work the result of sudden inspiration, or long term planning? How do you think up your concepts? I am a self-taught artist, therefore planning and preparing ahead is not a possibility. I will “see” or dream an image that I will quickly try to capture as a small sketch. Other times I just start collaging papers, ideas and images, to support my concept. I usually get inspired by an artwork or a topic I’m interested in, and try my best to come up with the desired result.

What do you think of the art scene in Riyadh? Anything you’d like to see changed?Sudden inspiration, or ‘the spark,’ is the catalyst; a visual, story or a character demanding to be brought to life. The journey of bringing this spark to life requires patience and long hours of meditation and contemplation. Tucked AwayKorean Palace

This is an ode to a classic! Korean Palace remains to be the only place in Riyadh where you will find the owner greeting every customer who comes in as he has for the past couple of decades. This, together with the fading Korean posters add to its authenticity.

You’ll get the staple Korean dishes, Bibimbap, bulgogi

and the occasionally available galbi, but for us, we love Korean Palace for their generally Asian offerings. The Beef with Mushroom is a dish that can feed a family. Garlic chili shrimps are always awesome, buttered lemon chicken is a safe bet and for noodles (‘cause who doesn’t eat noodles

in an Asian place?), the mixed canton comes highly recommended. Minus the overly extensive menu that may confuse newcomers into ordering things we would stay away from—It’s Kimchiriffic restaurant if you know what to get (forgive us, we just had to do it). Listen to the waiters, they actually know what to recommend.

1. Steak HouseSteak House has the black stone, which is a heated slab you get to “cook” your steak right on your table. Our handy tip is if you’re ordering it a la Blackstone, it’s best to keep the doneness a step before how you’d like your meat. So if you like it medium well, order it medium rare and just cook to your desired perfection.

2. The Butcher Shop and GrillDoneness is tricky business and after a while, the Butcher Shop and Grill has gotten the art down to a T-bone. When it comes to flavorful steaks, we’d gladly march to this restaurant. Their meats are always fresh and so far, they’ve been consistent in serving our medium rare and salt and pepper specifications with no stutter whatsoever.

3. EntrecôteThis is for folks who love their steak fillet simple and straightforward. True to its Parisian origin, don’t expect cuts and all that jazz. In fact, there’s nothing on the main course menu except for the steak, greens and fries at SR 150 per person.

3. The Terrace GrillOne of the food and beverage outlets at the Marriott hotel, the Terrace Grill is great for romantic evenings- while satisfying your inner carnivore. It’s less commercial approach to being a steak house works in their favor. The chef is careful in selecting their meat imports, which means you’ll get a fine selection to choose your cuts from every visit.

4. The Appetit KitchenThere’s only one steak on their menu but it’s well worth it. The fillet mignon Rosini style is a center cut with grilled foie gras and Perigueux sauce. We’d say it’s a petite kind of serving as one would expect of a Parisian dish but delightful and succulent nonetheless.

Protein is an essential supplement for healthy muscles, bones and body. Meeting the daily protein requirement is essential, especially if you are working out and placing any form of stress on your muscles. The amounts vary depending on the age, sex, weight, height and activity level of the person.

Your Guide to HEALTHY PROTEIN CONSUMPTIONDoes your body need more protein?By Amal Al Toaimi

According to the Institute of Medicine, your daily protein intake coming from protein sources should range from 10 – 35 percent.

Like any other food, overconsumption of protein can harm the body and damage your liver and other vital organs. Furthermore, only a certain amount of protein can be digested in one meal so it becomes unnecessary and harmful to exceed the body’s threshold. This ideal amount of protein is recommended to be 20 grams.

Protein promotes satiety and keeps a person full for long hours since it takes time for the body to digest; this is why you should always have a source of protein in your meals/snacks. Whether it’s a handful of nuts, a protein shake or even chocolate milk.

Respect your body’s limits and

requirements and show it the love it deserves.

Note: Don’t forget to drink around 2.5 liters of water per day and get seven to eight hours of sleep.

500 ml x5 = 2.5 LITERS

It is important to remember that having a meal with too much protein is pointless since the body only digests what it needs and stores the rest as fat, similar to other excess food intake.

Admittedly, an active individual who works out on a regular basis, whether it’s endurance or strength training, would require a higher amount of protein compared to a person who doesn’t engage in exercises at all. This is because during a workout your body tears muscle, and in order for it to grow and recover you would need the sufficient amount of protein to help build these tissues and enable fast recovery. In order to maximize benefits, your post workout meal should consist of protein, fats and carbs.

With our busy lifestyles, having a meal right after working out can be difficult for some. A great tip is to carry a protein snack which is conveniently available in the market, making it much easier to consume post-workout protein.

You can opt for the appropriate nutritional content depending on personal health goals.Always remember that healthy food and lifestyle are the gateway to a happier life.

Another study showed that people who take ACV tend to consume 200-275 less calories for the rest of the day. In fact, ACV has many mechanisms that were associated with promoting satiety and favoring weight loss:

- It inhibits carbohydrate digestion, leading to slower rise in sugar.

- It slows down gastric emptying, helping in feeling full for longer.

- It contains the great appetite suppressing fiber: pectin.

- Acids in ACV are precursors for important fat breakdown hormones such as growth hormone.

constipation. Most vinegar companies filter this film, so look for unfiltered versions, and if made from organic apple it’s even better.

AntibacterialACV is well-known as a powerful antibacterial. It helps kill pathogens and can be applied topically for cleaning and disinfecting. It also has been proven as an effective food preservative.

Improve Heart HealthOne study showed that women who eat vinegar-based salad dressings have lower risk for heart disease. Other studies, conducted on animals, have shown that consuming ACV can lower blood pressure, triglycerides and bad cholesterol-LDL, and increase good cholesterol-HDL.

Blood SugarThis is by far the most studied area. Vinegar seems to inactivate some of the carbohydrate digesting enzymes, slowing down sugar absortion and preventing blood sugars from rising to high levels.

A study published in Diabetes Care Journal found that consuming ACV improves insulin sensitivity and reduces blood levels of insulin. Also, taken at bedtime, it slighty reduces morning fasting blood sugar levels.

More studies are still needed, but for now if you are on blood glucose lowering medications, consult your doctor before increasing your ACV doses.

CONCLUSIONDespite the limited research, adding 1-2 tablespoons of diluted/unfiltered ACV to your daily diet would be very beneficial, especially for controlling blood sugar and body weight.

Nevertheless, adding one sole ingredient to your diet cannot replace a healthy lifestyle and portion control. Also, do not start any course of ACV if you are under the care of a physician.

Finally, do not drink ACV straight; its acidity is very harmful to your tooth enamel and esophagus.

To make ACV, yeast is added to apples producing acetic acid, which increases the absorption of important minerals (e.g. iron and calcium). Thus, adding vinegar to nutritious salads makes them even more nutritious.

Chinese cupping therapy does not involve any cutting, bloodletting or incisions. The skin is not compromised in any way other than the occasional bruise or suction mark, which dissipates quickly.

Interestingly, the skin’s discoloration once the cups are removed is used to determine the body’s toxicity and circulatory health. A light to dark pink mark or bruise can mean fair-to-poor circulation whereas dark purple marks could indicate a more serious illness like an infection, liver or kidney disease.

RAMADAN

DUA’AS TO REMEMBER THIS

The Four Categories

Religion Since Ramadan is all about piety and improvement, pray and beg Allah to improve you. Pick two aspects of your religion that you would like to improve and pray earnestly that Allah helps you with them. Maybe you have not perfomed Hajj or umrah yet? Make dua’a asking Allah to give you the opportunity to perform the pilgrimages. Do you to shed a bad habit? Or do you want to build a new one like praying in the mosque regularly? This is your chance to ask Allah to your heart’s content.

Life One of the first dua’as we come across during taraweeh is “Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good…” [Surat Albaqarah,

Chapter 2, Verse 201]. Allah teaches us to pray for the life of this world. So ask for Allah’s help from the bottom of your heart. Do you need help with your marriage, job, house, car or health? This is the time to ask Allah.

Hereafter The next part of the previously mentioned dua’a is “… and in the Hereafter [that which is] good …” Since our ultimate destination is the next life, we ought to dedicate part of our prayers to having an enjoyable afterlife too. Putting the dua’a in this order does not mean one is more important than the other. Do you want to sit with the Prophet (PBUH) in Paradise? Or maybe see and speak to your Creator? Is there an aspect of Hellfire that you find particularly terrifying? Seek Allah’s protection from it.

Others Ramadan is not a time to be selfish. This is why Allah makes it obligatory upon us to give Zakat Al Fitr, and also helps us unite our community during taraweeh and Eid. When you’re making du’aa think of your family, friends, the community and everyone at large. By praying for them, we will also get the added blessings of having the angels say ‘Ameen’ to those dua’as and praying for us as well. [Sunan Abi Dawud]

What makes Wedad Charity Foundation different from all the other foundations?Wedad Charity Foundation focuses on cases of children with anonymous lineage and aims to provide a safe, stable and nurturing environment that would allow them to thrive and develop. At the foundation we truly strive to open the minds and hearts of society to those cases.

We have social workers and health and psychology specialists that monitor and provide guidance to the children. We are also establishing a high standard research center that deals with these cases.

What is the age range for children at the foundation? How many have been taken in by families? We have newborns up until two year olds. We are in the process of completing the fostering procedure of 21 children by approved families, and 124 are currently being fostered.

How does the foundation assess the families that take in the children? It monitors the family on a regular basis. Representatives of Wedad pay visits to these families to see how well the child is coping.

Hussein Bahry established Wedad Charity Foundation to be the voice of children with anonymous lineage.

‘Urwah ibn Al Zubair (ra) had to have his leg amputated. While a friend was visiting him, he said, “If you came to give me condolence for the loss of my leg, I already submitted to Allah with patience to reward me for its loss.” But the guest told him, “I came to inform you that your son fell down in a stable, the animal stepped over him and he passed away.”

See, it’s easy to hate and take out your anger on the world. What’s difficult is searching through the hatred for that one silver lining, bottling up that anger inside of you and locking it up in your mental basement. It may seem hopeless at times to put in effort to operate that hint of optimism in yourself but what if I said all your problems would shrink if you initialized your optimistic filter?

Findings from a Dutch study, which was focused on the relationship between optimism and depression, showed that when compared to optimists, pessimists were more likely to develop depressive disorders. Other studies showed a correlation between pessimism and lower resistance to stress, lower quantities of motivation and lower overall life satisfaction. Mental health is the most obvious influence of mentality.

He said: “Oh Allah! You took one child, and left me many. You took one organ from my body, and left me many organs. Oh Allah! You tested me with my body, and you were kind to leave me with good health. You tested me with the loss of my son, but you were kind in leaving me the rest of my children.”

Everybody has the ability to change the way they think. A simple alteration to your thinking style can go a long way to improving yourself. Optimism describes how a person is always looking for the best in any situation and expecting good things to happen.

Day 1We arrived in Milan airport and from there we were taken to the small picturesque town of Stresa, which lies on the shores of Lake Maggiore in Northern Italy. There we were taken to our hotel, the Hotel des Iles Borromees where we checked in and had some free time to ourselves.

We visited Italy to see luxury carmaker Maserati collaborating with renowned fashion house Ermenegildo Zegna to bring together a limited edition of Maserati cars.

What then followed was a press conference at the Hemmingway suite. It was in this very same suite where renowned writer Ernest Hemmingway stayed and is believed to write much of what is arguably his best work, “A Farewell to Arms.”

At the press conference, done over a casual dinner, we had the chance to meet two inspiring individuals: CEO of Maserati, Harald J. Wester and the CEO of Ermenegildo Zegna, Gildo Zegna.

The two CEOs discussed the possibility of a collaboration. The idea initially faced a few initial setbacks like any other project, but overcoming all odds, it has managed to see the light of day.

It was more than just two companies collaborating; it was two great Italian business houses with rich heritage and dedication for the finest quality coming together.

Following a dynamic question and answer session at the press conference we were taken for a delectable Italian dinner. They say Italians love their food, and we realized the famous proverb even more over our dinner. Where everyone, from the chef to the diners seemed to be passionate about the food.

Day 2For the second day, we had an experience akin to an episode of Top Gear. After a technical briefing we were given Maserati sedans, the Quattroporte and Ghibli. We drove the Ghibli to the commune of Trivero, which was an hour’s drive away. The

journey was remarkable, with the sun glinting on our gleaming car as we made our way through picture-postcard terrain.

Trivero is home to the former house of the Zegna family, the Casa Zegna. The ancestral home now serves as an archive –museum. We met and were given a tour of the house by no other than the Zegna family.

We then visited the Zegna mill. Here, we learnt how the finest luxury suiting Ermenegildo Zegna is famous for is made. There was an archive room where samples of all cloth produced in Zegna’s factory is archived along with a document that mentions the manufacturing procedure of each. Some archives date back to around 100 years ago.

Afterwards we went for lunch at the Bucaneve Restaurant. The restaurant is famous for using local ingredients and still adhering to traditional recipes. After looking at a non-descript menu I was a little apprehensive but once the food started coming in, my worries went away and I started to indulge in the scrumptious Italian cuisine.

After lunch, we went to the Balocco Race Track – the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles proving ground. The sight of it was absolutely breathtaking; the tracks go on for miles even beyond the horizon. The Maserati MC12, MC Stradale Centennial Edition and GranTurismo Sport – all entitled to their place among the finest sports cars in

the confines of a single city. From the modern architecture of cosmopolitan cities to the charming qualities of small towns up in the mountains, combined with the history of Italy’s ancient cities, Turin is a beautiful amalgam of it all.

the world were waiting for us on the track. We got to experience their power, agility and handling to the fullest as we were driven in them by professional rally and race drivers.

Following an exhilarating experience on the racetrack, we drove to the city of Turin. The city to us was like a mini Italy. It has all the essentials of what Italy has to offer in

Day 3We were one of the first group of journalists to ever enter Maserati’s state of the art factory. It is here where some of Maserati’s flagship cars are born and stamped with the recognizable Trident logo before being shipped all over the world.

Once inside we saw cars at different stages in the highly modernized production line. It was a great experience to go behind the scenes and watch mechanical lifts move the cars from station to station and the final luxurious finished product

waiting for us at the end of the production line.

The trip came to an end, but the overall journey starting from getting to experience Maserati’s latest lineup and Zegna’s luxurious textiles to breathtaking countryside landscapes and the finest Italian cuisine was definitely an unforgettable one.

We paid a visit to the National Museum of Cinema. The museum had an exhibit setup where we got to discover the technical side of movie making. The experience was like watching a film that revolves around us.

Deerah

A local’s guide to navigating the most popular tourist destination.

Addeerah is pretty popular with tourists visiting Riyadh. With the Masmak Palace nearby, and back alley shops filled with brass trinkets and camel dummies for them to take home, it’s the place tour guides go to when they want to show their charges an ‘authentic’ souq. But the area is so much more than the shallow surface its reputation scratches.

Municipality headquarters, the wholesale market, the biggest gold souk, as well as the Masmak Museum. Then there are the bisht sellers, the carpet hawkers and the farwa specialists. It’s also placed close to Abu Swailem Street, the one end all for all crafting and gift supplies. And every year, the city’s Eid celebrations are held there as well.

Magical one stop for all things traditional, you say? Yes! It is.

HERE’S OUR TOP FIVE PLACES TO EXPERIENCE IN ADDEERAH:

1- Watch the Bisht Makers Sew Their WaresThere’s an area in Deerah where the bisht shops convene, and to entice customers to walk in, a tailor can usually be found working on the gold hems of the bishts in a seat on the pavement. Stop to watch how this traditional Saudi clothing is made, and feel free to ask questions.

2- Shop for Gems and Custom Made Jewelry in ThmairyTaibah has its fine share of jewelers, but Thmairy in Deerah has more stores, and a lot more options. Loose gems can be found here, as well. Buy ghawayesh (gold bangle), fix or polish any old jewelry, or simply window shop the dazzling displays.

3- Dig Into History in the Vintage ShopsIn the back of Thmairy, in which I like to call ‘the secret garden of stuff’, there are a number of shops that sell the oddest collections of historical relics. From watches with Saddam’s face on them to currencies of random countries, these places used to make child me very happy. Sometimes you’ll find them, sometimes you won’t. They’re kind of like the Room of Requirement, now that we think of it.

4- Buy Traditional Arabic Carpets, or the Components of a ‘Majlis Arabi’Traditional Saudi living rooms used to be on the ground, with seats made of a traditional red wool or cotton pattern. Deerah is filled with shops that sell these, along with other paraphernalia to stock your themed living room with. They even sell patterned wool bags.

5- Visit the Deerah MasjidThe entrance to this particular masjid is one of the prettiest design feats in the city, in our opinion. It’s a perfect meld of modern architecture and traditional Saudi design, and it’s all done so well. Buy some mukasarat (nuts) from a street seller and do some pigeon watching in the little garden by the masjid during athaan for a tranquil experience.

All that, and it barely skims the surface of all the area has to offer.

OUR FINAL TIP? Get a water bottle, check your timings, load up on some cash and explore! There’s no knowing what you’ll find.

Omar Bin Al Khattab MosqueDespite being one of the oldest mosques in the world, this ancient Saudi mosque continues to be rather unheard-of.

By Mohammed Mirza

It was my first ever trip to the northern part of the country, I kept peeking from the window of the aircraft to catch sight of the new landscape. What astonished me most was the fact that there were hardly any mountains in this part of the country especially coming from craggy Hijaz.

It was just barren desert and as we approached closer to the city of Sakaka I saw circles of green irrigated fields measuring hundreds of meters in diameter. It was an amazing contrast seeing vast tracts of desert intermingling with circular fields of fertile farmland.

I landed at Jouf airport, and made my way to Sakaka located some 30 kilometers away from the airport. The street was wide and lined with short olive trees almost like I was in a country near the Mediterranean.

After catching up with a friend who lives in Sakaka, we made our way to the historic town of Domat Al Jandal, where the remarkable Omar Bin Al Khattab mosque stands.

It is believed that Omar (RA) ordered the construction of the mosque on his return from Bait Al Maqdis in Jerusalem. The mosque’s construction is dated back to over 1,300 years making it one of the most important historic, cultural, and heritage landmarks in the country and a prominent tourist attraction in the northern province of Jouf.

As we approached the center of the small town of Domat Al Jandal we saw brown colored signboards pointing towards the historic part of the city.

We reached it and soon after noticed a lofty minaret standing tall from the surrounding historic ruins of an ancient housing quarters. The minaret stands adjacent to Omar Bin Al Khattab mosque and is said to be one of the oldest in the world. It measures about 12.7 meters and is the most striking feature of the mosque.

Despite the recent proliferation of buildings and television towers, the soaring minaret gives a distinctively Islamic look to the skyline of the ancient dwelling. SO

The actual mosque is below ground level, so we had to descend two flights of stairs to reach it. The entrance of the mosque is quite small compared to the prayer halls it leads to. Cobblestone pathways led us to the quadrangle courtyard of the mosque. It was rather empty and serene.

The mosque is divided in two parts. On the northern part is the original structure and opposite to that is a much later extension to the mosque.

We first entered the more recent structure, which surprisingly doesn’t have a door. There were prayer rugs in the mosque, which show that prayer is held even to this day in the historic mosque.

The structure is made of uneven stones adjoined with mortar. The prayer hall is noticeably wide in width and short in length. Numerous pillars form the basis of the structure with uneven arches between them, all affixed by beams of wood.

The roof of the building is made from straw and reinforced with logs of wood. Lanterns hang from the ceiling, which give a historical feel to the mosque.

We then proceeded toward the older part of the mosque, which has small wooden doors that seem relatively new. But once inside it seems as if much of the original structure remains, with a similar straw roof and uneven stones in its walls.

Surprisingly, the access to the top of both structures is open to the public and a path of rutted stairs leads to the top. I’d decided not to walk on the roof as some of the other tourists, as to me the roof appeared to be fragile and I didn’t want to damage a heritage structure such as this one.

There were many more places in Dumat Al Jandal we had to explore, most of which were in a close vicinity to the mosque so without further ado we made our way out of the mosque and head towards the other sites the ancient city houses.

HISTORIC SAUDI Petroglyphs At Shuwaymis

Considering the era they belong to, which was far removed from the most basic tools and materials, it is quite astounding to see the detail of form that is depicted in the rock art at Shuwaymis.

By Mohammed Mirza

Rock art sites in Saudi Arabia are among the oldest and richest in terms of content depicted in the entire Arabian Peninsula. This site at Shuwaymis is one of the best examples of Saudi Arabian rock art.

Located close to the village of Hait in Hail Province, these ancient petroglyphs at Shuwaymis are just as remarkable but not as popular as the ones at Jubbah in the north.

The site became famous only recently in 2001 when a school principal, Mamdouh Al Rasheedi, spotted it. It is however said that Bedouins of the region were aware of the site prior to it.

The petroglyphs portray ancient biodiversity found in the region including cheetahs, ibex and cattle. They depict hunting scenes, in which men are seen carrying bows and arrows and using hunting dogs that are believed to be salukis.

On the eastern side of the site, a huge panel of camels, dating to a later period is found. Close to it are deeply carved footprints that are believed to be of the Neolithic Era. There is also an impressive 2-meter image of a lion.
