There are more opportunities
Go international!◦ Finance a project◦ Contribute to global challenges◦ Develop new ideas with others◦ Find new network partners
But:◦ Be future oriented◦ Accept deadlines◦ Accept bureaucracy
Dr. Marion Tobler, NCP Environment
The European Union has developed international scientific cooperation (INCO) over the last 25 years to address the needs and opportunities of an interconnected world, and to contribute to peace and prosperity for European citizens. Europe wants to play a leading role in the world’s research arena and help build a safe future
Dr. Marion Tobler, NCP Environment16
More than 100 countries from all over the world are involved in EU Research Programmes. These activities will continue within the "Cooperation" programme of FP7, which covers the international cooperation actions in the 10 thematic areas and across themes. They will be implemented in coordination with the "Cooperation"
To become more competitive and play a leading role globally, the European Community needs a strong and coherent international science and technology (S&T) policy with three objectives:
1. support European competitiveness through strategic partnerships with non-EU countries in selected fields of science and by engaging the best scientists from such countries to work with and in Europe;
2. enhance the production of knowledge and scientific excellence by enabling European universities, research institutions and firms to establish contacts with their partners in such third countries, thereby facilitating access to research environments outside Europe and promoting synergies on a global scale;
3. address specific problems that third countries face, or that have a global character, on the basis of mutual interest and mutual benefit.
Dr. Marion Tobler, NCP Environment
Humanity is arguably the most successful creature that has ever walked the Earth. Our power to harness the forces of nature is practically without limits.
With more power comes greater responsibility. If we are to continue to live comfortably off nature’s bounty, we need to go about our business in a sustainable manner so that we and future generations can survive and prosper.
Co-operation is the cement that holds together the European Union. This is particularly relevant in the scientific realm, where international co-operation (INCO) for sustainable development has long been a central policy aim. INCO delivers massive benefits both to Europe and the outside world. Knowledge is not exhausted through use, it grows. Sharing creates win-win situations.
The international dimension is integrated into every theme of the EU's Research Framework Programmes allowing third countries to take part in its activities.
Humanity’s fingerprint can be found all over the planet: in the skies, on land and in the sea. We depend on natural resources, such as oil, that are finite in nature and our use of them pollutes the atmosphere. Renewable resources, such as forests, food crops and fisheries, are often exploited beyond their natural replacement capacity. That means we need to preserve them better and use them more wisely.
Humanity’s greatest gift is its creativity. We have the capacity to come up with an almost infinite number of possible solutions to the global challenges that face us. The European Union is doing its bit by funding INCO projects that further our quest for sustainable alternatives. These supports enhancing our understanding of forests, other land ecosystems and coastal areas, so that we can appreciate the effects human activity have on these fragile systems and how we can mitigate them.

To get funded by the Commisssion, ICPC beneficiaries participating in FP7 projects have the choice between two payment modalities. Being reimbursed on the basis of:
Actual Costs Lump sum
Dr. Marion Tobler, NCP Environment43
The Commission has defined for each group of ICPCs a reference lump-sum corresponding to a researcher yearly full-time job
Country‘s Income category (full-time/year)Low-income 8,000€/yearLower-middle-income 9,800€/yearUpper-middle-income 20,700€/year
The lump-sum covers all the costs of an ICPC participant including not only the costs for personnel and travel, but also those of equipment, consumables and indirect costs.

Dr. Marion Tobler, NCP Environment
Dr. Marion Tobler, NCP Environment60
Which description would you prefer?
Write a convincing and “selling” abstract, it is the first impression
Do not write more pages per section than allowed, the exceeding pages will not be read
A shorter proposal may be read first
The project title and acronym have to be catchy, short and appropriate
Pictures, tables, graphs replace many words. It is also easier for evaluators to understand the project idea faster.
The proposal should be written in one style and easily be read
The project must be very well written and “tell a story”
Being an evaluator is the best school to learn how to write a strong proposal
Dr. Marion Tobler, NCP Environment62
Dr. Marion Tobler, NCP Environment
Go for the following:
The scope of the project MUST be in line with the call topic
Excellent science, well written and good work plan proofing that work can be carried out during project duration
Get to the point, be clear, explain what you want to do and with which background
High risk projects are welcome and have a chance of funding. The contingency plan is important.
Each work package must make sense and should not have too many deliverables
Publication list, patents (also from potential competitors) should be explained and listed in the state of the art section,
Mention past collaborations of participants
Dr. Marion Tobler, NCP Environment
Avoid these risks:
Not getting to the point (too many different objectives)
Too ambitious projects with too many goals won’t get a higher score
Partner with xy expertise is missing or a partner has limited experience in the field
No quantitative and verifiable objectives
System integration is lacking (form 1 WP)
Budget is not justifies or/and requested PM are not justified
No risk analysis
Dr. Marion Tobler, NCP Environment65
Dr. Marion Tobler, NCP Environment
Choose the right coordinator, as this person reflects the strength of the project
Management must be well described and be of high quality. It reflects how well the consortium is organised and how it will solve problems.
How decisions are taken and how work is controlled, reflect the abilities of the coordinator and the collaboration with the work package leaders
The collaboration between the partners must be clear, too many partners can make the project weak
The travel budget per partner can show the intensity of the collaboration with the other partners
Past collaborations, common papers should be presented, as they reflect successful networks
Dr. Marion Tobler, NCP Environment
Past collaborations, common papers and past experience in the Framework programme should be presented, as they reflect a strong consortium and successful networks
Besides the partners in the project the abstract, deliverables and milestones can be a first deciding factor of the strength of a project
Integrate the partners for their expertise and complementarities, not for “strategy” reasons, have the best partners on board
It is less important that the “top-shots” or “gurus” are in the project, but that the partners and coordinator are excellent scientists in their fields
A scientific advisory board can be well perceived. It guarantees check from outside the consortium
68
Dr. Marion Tobler, NCP Environment
Explain advantages
Show societal and economical benefits (refer to the policy papers of the EC)
Come up with scenarios (quantify)
Be clear on exploitation
Sell!
Dr. Marion Tobler, NCP Environment
Dissemination activities need to be planned with clear deliverables (how many events will be organised, the education of young scientists, e.g. training or summer schools
Dissemination could cover summarize the goals, objectives and put them into a European context. The proposal should show that it fills a gap.
Proposal should address the intellectual property rights (IPR), not to solve potential problems, but to show how they will be addressed (capabilities of the coordinator)

● What problem to solve?
Provide a reliable and safe alternative to bone graft in the case of large bone defects (oncology, trauma cases) : implant biomaterials
→ minimize the risk of rejection: biocompatibility→ increase the long term stability : promote bone tissue ingrowthwithin the implants; vascularization and cell adhesion→ increase the life time of the implant : tuning the microstructureof the biomaterials.
Advantages of implant biomaterials→ reduce the time required for operation and rehabilitation→ reduce the treatment costs→ reduce the mobidity→ beneficial for the quality of life of the patients and the economy
● European dimension?
→ The European orthopedic biomaterials markets are expected to approach €1 billion by 2017→ Fast increase of the market : around 10% per year
● Current solutions?
Treatment of critical size bone defect→ ~ 47% : autologous graft→ ~ 43% : allograft (human demineralized bone matrix) → Xenografts→ other bone substitutes
● Why now?
→ increasing demand from the patients and the clinicians→ recent development in material sciences can provide matriceswith tunable properties
