My dear Readers,

India has produced a plethora of great leaders. Some of them have played a vital part in

Indian freedom struggle while others have taken India to great heights post independence.

The simplicity, courage, perseverance, and fortitude of these leaders continue to be a source

of inspiration for the common masses. One such great leader from the south is our Arutchelvar.

People who knew him well, are totally aware that he was a true Gandhian and lead a simple life as

Gandhiji did. Lot of commonalities are noticeable in both these Leaders, Gandhi and our

Arutchelvar. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, Born on 2nd october 1869, worked on lots of

social problems and believed in a simple life. Known as Father of the nation(India), United

Nations Celebrates his birthday as Non-Violence Day. Arutchelvar was destined to be with

Gandhi on 2nd Oct 2014.

From the Editor's Desk

"It takes the hammer of persistence to drive the nail of success."- John Mason, Writer.

"A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way." - John Maxwell

"Man becomes great exactly in the degree in which he works for the welfare of his fellow men."- Deshbandhu C.R. Das

This is very true of both Gandhi and Dr. NM.

Precisely, our Dr.NM was this leader.

Our Arutchelvar lived his life for the mankind, became a great Leader and respected by one and all.

Dr. NMWAS A

GREAT ALL-ROUNDER

A legendary Gandhian by principle, a patriotic and proud son of the soil, Dr. N.Mahalingam was a man of pious living. His exemplary social contributions in numerous fields of socio-economic spectrum have benefitted scores of institutions and individuals inspired by him during his long career.

An agriculturist by birth he graduated to be an Engineer and Technologist. Through his persistent endeavor he rose to become a genius in planning and execution, eventually to be hailed as an Industrialist and Pioneer of modern sugar industry.

As an Industrialist he has held several important positions and has played major roles fostering the development of agricultural, industrial, human resource and institutional development at the State and National levels.

As a passionate author and a scholar he has rendered notable literary contributions. He has written many books in English and Tamil on the development of industries, education, agriculture, infrastructure and culture, often promoting communal harmony and poising them for enhancing people's standard of living.

These accolades are mere prelude to the philanthropist he is. His social and humanitarian considerations took his journey beyond the boundaries of industries and scholarly tenets he nurtured. Right from his young age, N M, as he is affectionately known to all, has been inspired by the life and aspirations of Mahatma Gandhiji and the Gandhian Movement and has been reflecting the ideals of Gandhian Philosophy by thought, word and action.

His work as a politician started in the 1950s, where he gave all his energy to the Congress Party. He worked hard and his achievement as a Member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly was remarkable. He served 3 terms as MLA and served the society with sincerity and was remembered with great adulation by the people.

One of his greatest achievements as an ardent Gandhian, has been the republication of the most celebrated works of the Father of our nation, Mahatma Gandhiji in Tamil, which was originally published by Dr T S Avinashilingam, an associate of Mahatma Gandhi and Maulana Azad the first Education Minister of Independent Madras Province, about 50 years ago, in 17 volumes. Dr N M assigned this noble task to his associate Gandhians and with their dedicated contributions brought out the book in 20 volumes, adding three more volumes to the original publication and arranged for its distribution among schools and colleges in Tamilnadu.

Dr N Mahalingam's Socio-economic and literary contributions were numerous. His way of life, approach and execution are still inspiring our people, our institutions and of many others.

Ayya! You are Too great to ever be forgotten !

Your life is your message...

A sincere promise from the KCT faculty, students and everyone to carry your values forward !Thank you for the way of life you've shown us.You will always be remembered!

Why Dr. NM is so special?

After completing his studies Aiya decided to become actively involved in politics. In 1949 he took up the convenorship of the Coimbatore District Youth Congress , which launched him to a career into politics.

In 1952 with his father on his side Aiya won a massive victory with a margin of 36,000 votes, he was elected to represent Pollachi and that started his career as an MLA which lasted for 15 years

In 1962 election Aiya contested for Pollachi constituency and won by a narrow margin of 10000 votes , the reduced margin upset him.

In 1967 Congress lost Tamil Nadu.

“The defeat of Congress bothered him.”

Aiya left politics in 1969

"In the 15 years, Ayya did much laudable efforts for Pollachi and played a key role in bringing about a number of development projects, including the Parambikulam - Aliyar Project that helps irrigate the agriculture lands in the Pollachi region."

Dr. NM on Sage Kanchi Kamakoti Saraswathy Swamigal(Maha Periyava) in the kamakoti web site--(excerpts from our Ayya's article)

Thousands have written on Mahaperiaval, on His traits of greatness, on His capacity to bless people, to solve the problems of people and lead humanity. Let me in this article highlight some of the statements of the great men on this great sage.

Eminent foreign scholars like Paul Dukes, Paul Brunton, Eughina Borghini, Milton Singer, Robert Walser and many others of international renown have come all the way to India to meet His Holiness and receive His blessings. In my opinion, no other Acharya had attracted so many foreign disciples as our Paramacharya. Every one of these people has been inspired by His Holiness. He kindled an intellectual spark in them. It was the great writer K.S. Venkataramani of international renown who wrote in Bhavan's Journal of May 16, 1981, “Wherever my Acharyaswami is, there you find, burning steady and pure, the lamp of life and knowledge. He has surrendered everything at a tender age, youth, wealth and all the civil pleasures, for the service of man and the continuance of a mission. He is dear to us, even as the rolling sea is to the land-soiled art. Passionate and deep-rooted is our attachment to Sankara. He is our greatest blessing and our Adi Jagadguru”. Great men see far ahead of times.

Paramacharya came into contact with thousands of people of all sorts belonging to different types of traits.

But He discerned only the good qualities in them and associated with them only in the context of their noble traits, always unmindful of the defects of the individual. By this detachment he showed that he was compassionate impartially and stood head and shoulders far above other mortals.

There were three occasions when I had the spiritual experience of being at close proximity with a great sage of the level of Vyasa. Once when He visited our Sakti Pipes Factory at Elavur where he gave all of us the benefit of witnessing the Chandramouleeswara Pooja. The second occasion was when I went to Him to have His blessings for the Kumbhabhishekam festival of Vadalur Satya Gnana Sabhai which he gave spontaneously with a heart full of joy. The third occasion was when I met Him with Bhageerathan just to pay my respects. He asked me to have the darshan of the Goddess at Thiruvanchiyam which I did and I was immensely benefited. Of course, I received His blessings recently when I went to Kanchi to hand over copies of “A Hundred Years of Light” which I brought out on the occasion of His Centenary Celebrations. While concluding, I assert: “Amidst the thousands of sages that have crowded columns of history, the name of Sri Chandrasekharendra Sarasvati Swamigal shines and shines alone – a star in the firmament of philosophy, religion and literature.”

PADMA VIBHUSHAN Indian Father of Green Revolution Dr. M. S. SWAMINATHAN'S encomiums on Padma Bhushan Dr.N.Mahalingam

Population growth, unemployment and natural sources degradation are the major challenges facing our country today. Dr. N. Mahalingam has shown the most effective methods of meeting these challenges in human resource development. Poverty persists as long as the human resource s undervalued and land and material resources are overvalued. Also the technological push we see around us must be attached with an ethical pull. It is such tasks that we can draw inspiration and guidance from the life and writings of Dr. N. Mahalingam.

TRIBUTES TO THE LEGEND

Former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam with Arutchelvar

An excerpt from the book 'Ignited minds' writtenby our former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam

“On an occasion I was talking to Dr. N. Mahalingam, a great industrialist and academician. He was telling me how the country can generate wealth through agro, chemical and textile industries. Amazed by his achievements in establishing industries and educational institutions, I asked him, 'Sir, what is your next mission?' As I said this I realized I was asking this question to a person who was about eighty years old! Dr. Mahalingam replied. 'I have analyzed the Tamil scripts used in the last Sangam, which was 2500 years ago. Now I would like to do research on the Tamil scripts used in the first Sangam which existed 5000 years ago!'

It was a reminder to me that visionaries don't age.”

From the Asian Chess Federation …….

Dr.NM served as President of the All India Chess Federation from 1985 to 1989 and that of the Tamilnadu Chess Association from 1975 o 1984 and 1999 to 2002.

He was the first person to offer cash incentives to chess players when they became International Masters & Grand Masters. In 1978, he was instrumental in getting the Chess included in the approved list of Games in Tamilnadu state. His contribution to Tamilnadu and Indian Chess was immense and spread over the last 50 years. He was one of the pillars on which Chess grew in the land of its origin.
