INTRODUCTION

The state of UP has high Infant Mortality Rate (67 per thousand live births), next only to Madhya Pradesh (70 per thousand live births), while the Under-5-Mortality rate is 96 per thousand live births.

Estimates show that under nutrition, which includes both micronutrient deficiency as well as protein energy malnutrition is associated with over half of all child deaths in developing countries.

Page 3: Dr Neha Tyagi

Among micronutrients Vitamin A is important as it plays a crucial role in improving child survival. Along with other actions, it improves the immune response in a child.

Most children receive first dose of Vitamin A along with Measles vaccine between 9-12 months while children over one year are, by and large, not reached through routine system.

Bal Swasthya Poshan Mah(BSPM) or Child Health and Nutrition Months, a joint strategy of Health and ICDS, to deliver key health and nutrition services to children below five years, is organized every year in June and December.

Page 5: Dr Neha Tyagi

These activities were carried out in 18 districts as UNICEF supported pilot project in 2003 and were found to be successful.

It was decided to involve Medical College faculty for training and monitoring activities.

It included technical information and support and also support in planning, monitoring and reporting of BSPM activities.

The pre and the post test questionnaire showed a marked difference in awareness levels of BSPM activities among the Health and ICDS.

Out of the 15 questions there were 5 questions answered incorrectly by most of the participants during pre test. They were

- Why is vitamin A important for children?

- How many doses of vitamin A is to be given?

CONCLUSION

-

Page 18: Dr Neha Tyagi

-After opening the bottle of vitamin A ,up to how much time it can be used ?

-Within how much time breast feeding should be initiated after normal delivery?

- What is Colostrum and why is it important? These knowledge gaps were given special stress

during the training session. Hence it is imperative that such training

workshops are required for successful implementation of BSPM.
