During Quentin Shaw’s 36 years of post-graduate engineering experience, he has specialised exclusively in the field of dam and hydropower engineering. He has worked on well over 150 dams, from 5 to 281 m in height, in 31 countries. He has been involved in the construction of 41 new dams (the highest being 275 m) and the rehabilitation or raising of a further 15. Quentin’s particular specialisation is concrete dams; RCC and CVC gravity & arch dams and he has had a direct involvement in more than 7 million m3 of placed RCC to date, while he also has a broad experience across all dam types and all stages of project development.
Quentin has acted as an expert/specialist in the fields of RCC, concrete and arch dams, as well as in dam instrumentation, dam safety and general dam engineering, on major international projects. He has further been a member of the expert/technical review panel, for clients including the World Bank, on 9 large dam & hydropower projects to date and has published more than 60 technical papers on dam engineering. Quentin’s PhD thesis developed a new understanding of the early behaviour of RCC in large dams, as recognised with the award to Changuinola 1 Dam of “International Milestone RCC Project” and his receipt of the ICOLD Award for Innovation in 2018.
Quentin is the Chairman of SANCOLD and the Vice-Chairman of ICOLD’s Committee on Concrete Dams, on which he serves as South Africa’s representative. He was Lead Author for ICOLD Bulletin 177 on RCC dams.
