The school of thought called pleomorphism is championed by Dr. Robert O. Young. In microbiology, pleomorphism is the ability of bacteria to vary their shape and size due to changes in the environment. Pleomorphists such as Antoine Bechamp and Gunther Enderlain claimed that bacteria had the capacity to change forms dramatically whereas monomorphists like Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch believed that each bacterial cell is formed from the previous cell and has the same shape and size. Monomorphism gained dominance then, however, it is also acknowledged now that certain types of bacteria have the capability of changing shapes dramatically.
