1ST YEAR MEDICAL STUDENT’S ORIENTATION TO BIOCHEMISTRY COURSE
Dr. Saidunnisa, M.D.Professor and chairperson Biochemistry23/09/2012
INTRODUCTION
Word “Biochemistry" was first proposed in 1903 by a German scientist Carl Neuberg.
Biochemistry is a Branch of science concerned with the chemical processes that occur at molecular and cellular levels in living organisms.
Understanding biochemistry provides insights into understanding the human body, which is the basis of medicine.
INTRODUCTION
Modern day medical practice is highly dependent on the laboratory analysis of body fluids especially blood.
Hence demarcation of abnormal from normal constituents of the body is the aim of the study of biochemistry.
COURSE Biochemistry with Clinical correlations
(sem-I and II) Course Numbers: MBC-123 and MBC-
224. The first year of medical school
curriculum is highly structured and student centered.
CURRICULUM
The department of Biochemistry strongly believes in the student centered curriculum and employs unique and innovative techniques to make each session highly interesting.
Examples:1. Small group discussion2. Case Based Learning3. Book Talks4. Seminars5. Projects

COURSE HANDOUT
The course handout provided to you, has the details of:
Topic date and time Faculty Details Teaching Methodology Assessment Dates (Quizzes and
Assignment)
BOOKS
Because individual students have different backgrounds in chemistry no one textbook will be suitable for all students.
In addition, no textbook currently available covers every topic of importance for this course.
BOOKS
The student finds it difficult to sort out the essential minimum from the desirable total.
Faculty will guide you.
RECOMMENDED BOOKS
1. Text Book of Biochemistry for medical students by “DM Vasudevan”
2. "Biochemistry", by Pamela C. Champe and Richard A. Harvey, J.B. Lippincott Co., Lippincotts
REFERENCE BOOK
1. "Basic Medical Biochemistry, A Clinical Approach", by Dawn B. Marks, Allan D. Marks and Colleen M. Smith, Williams and Wilkins, Baltimore,
2. "Principles of Biochemistry", 3rd Edition, by Albert L. Lehninger, David L. Nelson and Michael M. Cox,
LECTURE HANDOUTS
The individual lecturers will attempt to point out those areas you should understand.
Access to the presentation material (soft copy), will be uploaded on to the intranet and also onto gmail account immediately after the lecture.
ATTENDANCE
Attending all classes will facilitate your learning process. It will make learning much easier, understandable and enjoyable.
75 % is mandatory to become eligible for any exam.

hours from 8.30-4.30pm
LABORATORY SESSIONS Wearing lab coat and carrying lab
manual is mandatory Be thorough with the instructions,
since mishandling of reagents may lead to serious accidents
Missing of lab sessions to be avoided , since remedial is very difficult
COURSE SURVEYS
Are conducted once in a semester by the IRO Need not wait till such time
Department welcomes any suggestions and feedback, to facilitate the Biochemistry learning an enjoyable one.
