Dr. Sheikh Mohammad Fazle Akbar
Department of Medical Sciences, Toshiba General Hospital, Japan
Graduated in Medicine & Surgery from Bangladesh in 1980 and received Ph. D in
Medical Sciences from Ehime University Graduate School of Medicine, Ehime, Japan
in 1993. He worked as a full faculty at Ehime university, Japan until 2008 when
joined Toshiba General Hospital, Tokyo, Japan as Principal Investigator.
Research activities have mainly been concentrated on epidemiological studies and
elucidation of pathological mechanisms as well as development of immune therapy
for chronic liver diseases and liver cancers using antigens, various forms of vaccines,
adjuvants and different immunocytes including dendritic cells.
Involved in developing international collaborations with different countries, and mainly with developing countries
of Asia. Authored more than 100 articles and several books. Also active as editor as well as editor-in-chief of
scientific journals.

Dr. Oidov Baatarkhuu
Professor and Chairman,

Professor Oidov Baatarkhuu graduated from the Mongolian National Medical
University and obtained his degree in Doctor of Medicine with commendation in
1994. He has received his PhD degree at the Postgraduate School, Health Sciences
University of Mongolia in 2006. He is currently Professor of Medicine, Head of
Department of Infectious Diseases, School of Medicine, Mongolian National
University of Medical Sciences and General Expert on Infectious Diseases of Ministry
of Health, Mongolia.
He has completed his postdoctoral Fellowship in Hepatology at the Department of
Internal Medicine, Severance Hospital, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Seoul, Korea between 2007-2008.
He did second overseas Clinical Research Fellowship in Hepatology at the Department of Internal Medicine III,
AKH Hospital, University of Vienna, Austria in 2012. Also currently he has completed as a Clinical Research
Fellow in Hepatology at the Storr Liver unit, Westmead Millennium Institute for Medical Research, University of
Sydney, Australia. He has also been a Visiting Professor at the Victorian Infectious Diseases Laboratory,
Melbourne, Australia in 2014.
Professor O. Baatarkhuu is an Executive Council Member of APASL, Member of CEVHAP, and President of the
Mongolian Association for the Study of the Liver Diseases, Executive Director of the Mongolian Infectious
Diseases Physicians, and Chairman of the Scientific Committee for the APASL-STC 2012 in Mongolia
Professor O. Baatarkhuu is a key investigator in more than 10 international and national trials on antiviral treatment
of chronic hepatitis B and C.
He has been extensively involved in research in the fields of viral hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma and he is
currently working on the natural history of hepatitis B and D in Mongolia.
Professor O. Baatarkhuu has published more than 120 international and local papers. He also has spoken nationally
and internationally on viral hepatitis and chronic liver diseases including hepatocellular carcinoma.

Honors and Awards
Dr. Stephen Chan is currently the clinical Associate Professor at the Department of Clinical Oncology, The Chinese
University of Hong Kong. He is a medical oncologist with research interest focusing on clinical development of
novel treatment for liver and pancreatobiliary cancers. His research has earned him the Young investigator award
and Gold medal on dissertation awarded by the Hong Kong College of Physicians.
Dr. Chan is active internationally. Apart from being the key investigator of multiple international clinical trials on
HCC, he is currently the international member of the NCI Hepatobiliary Task Force of the Gastrointestinal Steering
Committee in United States. He serves in the editorial board of multiple journals including the liver international
and The International Journal of Biological Markers. Dr. Chan published more than 100 papers in peer-review
journals with some in high-impact journals including the Journal of Clinical Oncology and the Lancet.
Dr. Michael Charlton

Areas of Interest
Dr Charlton’s clinical and academic research interests include liver transplantation,
nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and viral hepatitis. He has been a principal
investigator in several national and international clinical studies and National
Institutes of Health grants, including a study of the pathobiological basis of the
histological spectrum of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
Educational and Career Experiences
Dr Charlton obtained his medical degree in 1986 from the University of London in London, UK. He subsequently
completed his internal medicine residency and a fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University
of Vermont in Burlington, USA. This was followed by a hepatology and liver transplantation fellowship at the
Mayo Clinic in Rochester, USA.
Before obtaining his current position in 2017, Dr Charlton served as the Medical Director at the Intermountain
Transplant and Regenerative Medicine Centre in Salt Lake City, USA, as well as Hepatology Director and Medical
Director of Liver Transplantation at the Mayo Clinic.
Dr Charlton has been an active member of numerous professional societies, including the American Association
for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) and has served as Councilor and President of the International Liver
Transplant Society.
In addition to publishing over 200 manuscripts, Dr Charlton has been a member of the AASLD NAFLD Practice
Guidelines writing group, has served as an Associate Editor for Hepatology, Transplantation, Liver Transplantation
and American Journal of Transplantation, and was a founding Associate Editor for Clinical Gastroenterology and
Hepatology.
Honors and Awards
Dr Charlton has received numerous awards during his career, including Young Investigator and Career
Achievement Awards from the American Society of Transplantation. Additionally, he is a Fellow of the Royal
College of Physicians, a Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago and an Emeritus Professor of Medicine
at the Mayo Clinic.

Dr. Donna D’Souza

Dr Donna D'Souza completed her medical school at Monash University, and her
Radiology Registrar training and Master of Medicine degree at University of
Melbourne, in her home city of Melbourne, Australia. She subsequently completed a Vascular and Interventional
Radiology fellowship at the University of Toronto in Canada, and then Interventional Radiology and Body
Radiology fellowships at the University of Minnesota in the US. Dr D'Souza is currently an Assistant Professor of
Radiology and Interventional Radiologist at the University of Minnesota, with clinical interests in interventional
oncology and portal hypertension interventions. At the University of Minnesota, Dr D'Souza is the Director of the
Interventional Radiology Residency and Fellowship Program, and Associate Program Director for the Diagnostic
Radiology Residency Program. Her research is focused on chemoembolization, radioembolization and intra-
tumoral injection of immunotherapy and oncolytic viruses. She has many peer-reviewed publications and given
many invited lectures in her field. Dr D’Souza serves on several US national committees in the Society of
Interventional Radiology, and is a reviewer for the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology, and
Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology. In her free time, Dr D’Souza likes to travel the world with her
husband and enjoy the outdoors. She lived in a Japan for one year in her youth and speaks intermediate Japanese.
She loves animals and has two dogs.

Dr. A. Kadir Dökmeci Emeritus Professor of Gastroenterology at the Ankara University School of Medicine, Ankara, Turkey A. Kadir Dökmeci was born in 1948 at Ilgaz, Turkey. He received his medical degree from the Ankara University School of Medicine (AUSM) in 1971 and qualified as a gastroenterologist in 1978. He has studied ultrasonography, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) as well as clinical hepatology in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Chiba University School of Medicine in Japan as Prof. Okuda’s student from 1979 to 1981 for 2.5 years. He had worked together with Dr. Masao Omata and Dr. Osamu Yokosuka in this period.
He was subsequently appointed as associate professor in 1982 and as a professor in 1988 and served as chief of Department of Internal Medicine and as a chief of Department of Gastroenterology at AUSM from 1993 to 2000. Prof. Dökmeci has been a visiting professor at the Chiba University School of Medicine from 1988 to 1989 and at the University of California, Irvine in 2003. He is founder and member of many national and international societies, including Turkish Society of Hepatobliopancreatology (serving as president), Turkish Society of Gastroenterology, and Turkish Association for the Study of the Liver, The Association of the Turkish and Japanese Universities, Turkish Society of Endoscopy, Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver. He has received national and international awards in his carrier including Inohana Award given by Chiba University in 1999. He has organized many medical congresses and international Sports competitions including 5th APASL STC in İstanbul and both International Figure Skating and Ice Hockey Competitions. Also he organized the 25th APASL Annual Conference 2015 in İstanbul. He was elected as the President of APASL from 2014 to 2015. He has contributed to editorials, reviews and book chapters. He is in editorial board in various journals such as Hepatology International, Digestive Endoscopy and Turkish Journal of Gastroenterology. He was elected as a medical committee member and medical supervisor of International Ice Hockey Federation. He published more than 100 papers in different journals. A.Kadir Dökmeci is currently Emeritus Professor of Gastroenterology at the Ankara University School of Medicine and acting as the Past President of APASL. He is married and has 1 daughter.

Professor Norifumi Kawada was graduated with M.D. degree in 1986 from Osaka City
University Medical School. He obtained his Ph.D. degree from Osaka City University
in 1991. From 1991 to 1992, Prof. Kawada trained as a Visiting Scientist, Institute of
Biochemistry, Freiburg University. And then, from 1993 to 2006, he worked as a
Research Associate, Assistant Professor, and Associate Professor in Osaka City
University Graduate School of Medicine.
He was promoted as a professor of Osaka City University Graduate School of Medicine in 2007. His research
interests are biology of stellate cells, liver fibrosis, and carcinogenesis. He is a reviewer and member of editorial
board of several scientific journals. Prof. Kawada was Visiting Scientist, Department of Hepatology, Florence
University in 2004, and from 2015, he is a visiting Professor of University College London (UCL). He assumes a
fellow of American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) in 2015.

Dr. Soo Ryang Kim Director, Department of Gastroenterology, Kobe Asahi Hospital, Japan Areas of Interest Gastroenterology, Hepatology Educational and Career Experiences Soo Ryang Kim studied medicine at Kagoshima University and graduated in 1975. Following a clinical fellowship in Kobe Kyodo Hospital, he started a private medical clinic, Asahi Clinic, in 1981. Meanwhile he studied histopathology of the liver at Kobe University Graduate School of Medicine, where he received his PhD degree in 1982, and later he studied clinical hepatology at Osaka City University Graduate School of Medicine. He founded Kobe Asahi Hospital in 1988, where he is currently a
director. Since the 20th century, he has published more than 40 international scientific papers as a first author regarding viral hepatitis, alcohol-related liver diseases, and liver tumors including hepatocellular carcinoma. His research interests are "Diagnosis and treatment of viral hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma" and “Comparison of liver diseases between Japan and Korea”.
Dr. Kazuhiko Koike Professor and Chairman, Department of Gastroenterology, Graduate School of Medicine, The University of Tokyo, Japan. Dr. Koike obtained his M.D. degree from The University of Tokyo in 1980. From 1986 to 1989, he worked in the National Cancer Institute, Bethesda. Dr. Norihiro Kokudo is the President of National Center for Global Health and
Medicine in Tokyo. He earned his M.D. in 1981, and then Ph.D. in 1988 at University
of Tokyo. From 1989 to 1991 he stayed at Department of Surgery, University of
Michigan as a visiting research investigator. After 6 years at Cancer Institute Hospital, Tokyo, as a senior staff of
GI surgery, he joined the Department of HPB Surgery in The University of Tokyo and became a professor and
chairman in 2007 (until March 2017). Dr. Kokudo has been conducting a number of research projects on surgical
treatment of HCC, colorectal liver metastases, and living donor liver transplantation. As the chairman of the
guideline committee, he compiled 3rd and 4th version of Japanese clinical practice guidelines for HCC in 2013 and
2017. Dr. Kokudo is the immediate past president of Japan Surgical Society and Asian-Pacific Hepato-Pancreato-
Biliary Association (A-PHPBA). He is the secretary general of International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association
(IHPBA) and a Vice President of International Association of Surgeons, Gastroenterologists and Oncologists
(IASGO). He is also a fellow of American College of Surgeons and Royal College of Surgeons of England, and a
member of International Society of Surgery and The Society of Surgical Oncology. He is an honorary regional
editor for HPB, and an associate editor for Liver Cancer, Digestive Surgery, and Japanese Journal of Clinical
Oncology. He is on the editorial board of Annals of Surgery, Surgery, Journal of American College of Surgeons,

Dr. Ming Kuang, MD, PhD, is vice president of the First Affiliated Hospital (FAH), Sun
Yat-sen University in Guanghzou, the largest hospital in south of China with an annual
out-patient number of 5 million. Dr. Kuang is a professor in hepatobiliary surgery and
interventional ultrasound, and director of cancer center in FAH, Sun Yat-sen University.
As a doctor, Dr. Kuang majors in minimally invasive treatments for cancer such as
laparoscopic surgery, robotic surgery, image-guided tumor ablation. Dr. Kuang is
interested in the mechanism, prevention and treatment of liver cancer recurrence and
metastases, and precision cancer research including immunotherapy. In the above-
mentioned field, he has published many original articles on Hepatology, Radiology, Oncogene and Clinical Cancer
Research etc. He has achieved 8 major grants from the government, such as National Natural Science Foundation
of China. As a main participant, Dr. Kuang was honored with 2008 China Medical Science Awards 2nd prize and
2008 Guangdong Province Medical Science Awards 2nd prize. Dr. Kuang is nowadays one of the major experts in

Dr. George Lau Chairman, Humanity and Health Medical Group Director and Consultant, Humanity and Health GI and Liver Centre Dr George Lau graduated from The University of Hong Kong in 1987, with support by the King’s Edward Scholarship. After graduation, he was trained in Internal Medicine and then specialized in Gastroenterology and Hepatology and obtained his fellowship from the Hong Kong College of Physician in 1995. He received his post-doctorial training in Hepatology at Stanford University from 1992-1994 (supported by Hong Kong-Stanford scholarship) and University College of London from 1998-1999 (supported by Royal College scholarship). In 2002, he was promoted to Senior Lecturer and Consultant at the Department of
Medicine, Queen Mary Hospital, The University of Hong Kong. At the same year, he awarded most understanding Youth in Hong Kong. In 2005, he became the Global Principal Investigator of pegylated interferon alfa-2a for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and his work led to the registration of pegylated interferon alfa-2a by the EU and US Food and Drug Administration in 2005 (published in the New England Journal of Medicine). Dr. Lau has more than 500 publications with citation of over 10,000. He has also been invited to give numerous lectures in Hepatology throughout the world. Dr Lau had been the Associate Editor for both Journal of Hepatology and Liver international, and is currently serving as reviewer for over 30 international journals. In 2006, he was promoted to full Professor and assistant Dean, Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong. He was admitted to Fellow of the Royal College of Physician (London) in 2006. He was also well respected by his peer in academic Hepatology and was elected as 19th President of the Asian Pacific Association of the Study Liver (APASL) in 2008-2009. With his contribution in the field, he is now life-member of the Steering committee of APASL. In 2015, he was made fellow of the American Association for the study of Liver Diseases. In 2016, he was awarded National Science and Technology Progress Award (State Science and Technology Prizes)- Technological Advancement in Chronic hepatitis B infection management (China). In his community work, Dr Lau has founded the Cheng Si-Yuan (China-International) Hepatitis Research Foundation in 1998 (http://www.csyfoundation.org). This foundation represents one of the largest non-profit organisation in liver diseases in Asia. In 2009, he founded and become Chairman of Humanity and Health Medical Group, Hong Kong. He was also Director and Consultant, Humanity and Health GI and Liver Center in Hong Kong. Scientific Research Instrument Development and International Cooperation Projects
from the Ministry of Science and Technology. She has published 98 SCI articles. Prof.
Liang edited the first monograph on thermal ablation in China: ultrasound-guided
percutaneous microwave ablation therapy of liver tumor, and has been invited by the internationally renowned
Elsevier publishing house to preside over the editing of an English monograph. She has obtained 14 patents at

Professional experiences
Shi-Ming Lin studied medicine at National Taiwan University and graduated in 1982,
Following this, he completed a clinical resident training in Veteran General Hospital Taipei and GI fellowship in
Chang-Gung Memorial Hospital-Taipei and Linkuo. Dr. Lin is currently a Professor since 2007 and a deputy
chairman at the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Chang Gung University since 2014.
Dr. Lin is one of the pioneers of RFA for liver tumors in Taiwan. Dr. Lin has published 120 papers in international
and domestic scientific journals including Gastroenterolgy, Hepatology, Gut, Journal of Hepatology, Cancer, and
British Journal of Surgery. Dr. Lin has 4 papers (published in Hepatology 1999 and Gastroenterology 2004, Gut

Dr Liu’s clinical and academic research interests include hepatitis B, hepatitis C and
nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, particularly focusing on the role of viral and host
factors in the pathogenesis and natural/treatment outcomes of chronic hepatitis B and
C. Additionally, Dr Liu has been involved in clinical trials of treatments for chronic
hepatitis B and C and hepatocellular carcinoma.
Educational and Career Experiences
Dr Liu obtained his medical degree in 1992 and completed his internal medicine training at the National Taiwan
University in Taipei City, Taiwan. Dr Liu later received his PhD in 2003 from the Graduate Institute of Clinical
Medicine, National Taiwan University.
Before obtaining his current position, Dr Liu held Associate Professor and visiting staff positions at the Department
of Internal Medicine, National Taiwan University, as well as an Attending Physician position in En Chu Kong
Hospital in Taipei City, Taiwan.
Honors and Awards
Dr Liu has been the recipient of several awards during his career, including the Emerging Leader award from the
Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Foundation at Asian Pacific Digestive Week (APDW) 2013.

Dr. Massimo Colombo
Professor Massimo Colombo is Director of the Center for Translational Research in
Liver Disease at Humanitas Research Hospital, Rozzano Italy. In the past 15 years
he has been Chairman of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and
Chairman of the Department of Medicine and Liver, Kidney, Lung, Bone Marrow
and Organ Transplantation at IRCCS Maggiore Hospital in Milan, Italy. He has also
been a Professor of Medicine and Gastroenterology at the University of Milan for
more than 25 years. Professor Colombo gained his medical degree from the
University of Milan, before completing a residency in gastroenterology at IRCCS
Maggiore Hospital. Subsequently he undertook an international fellowship in liver
diseases at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, USA (1974-1975), before returning
to IRCCS Maggiore Hospital.
Professor Colombo’s research interests include the diagnosis and treatment of viral
hepatitis and liver cancer. A member of many professional societies including EASL, AASLD and several Italian
societies, he is the recipient of numerous awards including the 2010 European Association Study Liver (EASL)
Recognition Award for outstanding medical and scientific contributions, the Italian Association for the Study of the
Liver (AISF) Distinguished Service Award, the Thanhauser Medal Award of the German Society of
Gastroenterology and the Nelson Fausto Award of the International Liver Cancer Association(ILCA). Professor
Colombo was Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Hepatology from 2005–2009 and currently sits of the editorial
boards of many hepatology journals. In September 2016 he was appointed Chairman of EASL International Liver
Foundation. He has authored more than 500 original manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, with an H-index of 83
and more than 27,000 citations.

Dr. Shuhei Nishiguchi is a Professor of the Department of Hepatobiliary Pancreatic

of Hyogo College of Medicine since 2013. He received his MD (1981) and PHD
(1985) in Medicine from Osaka City University. He spent one year as a research
fellow in Salk Institute, La Jolla CA under the instruction of Dr. Renato Dulbecco who
won the 1975 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on oncoviruses. He
has authored over 400 peer-reviewed papers, has edited 5 books, and holds many
patents. Prof. Nishiguchi has been associate Editor for Hepatology Research, Journal of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic
Sciences, and Liver International. He is a director of the Japan Society of Hepatology, Japanese Society of Clinical

Dr. Kazuhiro Nouso graduated Okayama University Medical School in 1986. He is a
chief of the Division of Gastroenterology at Okayama City Hospital, and a clinical and
visiting professor at Okayama University. His broad interests include translational and
clinical research regarding hepatocellular carcinoma. He has authored more than 150
original scientific manuscripts and introduced many new techniques for radiofrequency ablation. He became a

Masao Omata, MD, has made an effort to revitalize the APASL (Asian Pacific
association for the study of the Liver) with Dr. S. Sarin and others for the last 10
years. He is a Co-Editor in Chief of the Hepatology International, an official journal of
APASL. He graduated from Chiba University School of Medicine (Dr. Okuda), and
continued his training at Yale University (Dr. G Klaskin) and in the Liver Unit at University of Southern California
(Dr. RL Peters). After 6 years in US, he returned to the Department of Medicine at Chiba University in 1989, and
started molecular biological study on Hepatitis B virus.
In 1992, he became Chairman of Second Department of International Medicine at University of Tokyo, Japan and
then subsequently became chairman of Department of Gastroenterology. Under his leadership, the Department of
Gastroenterology had become one of the foremost centers in its field.
Now, he is the president of the two hospitals at Yamanashi, west of Tokyo, where, although scenic place with Mt.
Fuji, hepatitis virus infection is epidemic and his homeland. He and his colleague have published 1,164 articles in
English Literature including, NEJM 5, Lancet 6, Ann Int Med 6, Hepatology 59, Gastroenterology 43. The total
impact factor is 6,723 and 42,844 citations with H-index of 104 as of July 1st, 2017.

Dr. Uei Pua Senior Consultant, Department of Diagnostic Radiology, Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore Dr Pua Uei is a fellow of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Society of Europe (CIRSE), the Royal College of Radiologists (United Kingdom), the Academy of Medicine, Singapore, and is the immediate past president of the Singapore Radiological Society. He currently serves on committees in the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), Society of Interventional Oncology (SIO) and Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR). Dr. Shuichiro Shiina Professor, Department of Gastroenterology, Juntendo University, Japan Shuichiro Shiina graduated in Medicine at the University of Tokyo in 1982. He completed a residency and fellowship training at the University of Tokyo Hospital and Mitsui Memorial Hospital. He received Ph.D. degree in Medical Science with a study “A randomized controlled trial of radiofrequency ablation with ethanol injection for small hepatocellular carcinoma” at the University of Tokyo in 2005. He moved to Juntendo University in December 2012. Dr. Shiina has been a pioneer of image-guided percutaneous ablation therapies for liver tumors, such as percutaneous ethanol injection, microwave ablation, and radiofrequency ablation. He has performed radiofrequency ablation on over 10,000 patients with liver tumors.
Dr. Shiina published over 200 international scientific papers in high quality English Journal and over 300 domestic scientific papers. Dr. Shiv K Sarin Senior Professor and Head, Department of Hepatology, & Director, Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), India Dr. Shiv Kumar Sarin obtained his M.B., B.S. degree with seven gold medals (1974), his MD in General Medicine (1978) from Rajasthan University, and his Fellowship in Gastroenterology from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, in 1981. He served at the G.B. Pant Hospital, University of Delhi in 1983, becoming the Director Professor and Head of Gastroenterology in 1997. He is currently the Senior Professor and Head, Department of Hepatology and Director, Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences. He is also the Director, WHO collaborative center on Viral hepatitis and Liver Diseases at ILBS, New Delhi India. He serves as Adjunct Faculty, Molecular Medicine at JNU due to his deep interest and contributions to translational science.
During his academic career spanning 35 years, Prof. Sarin contributed immensely to the field of Hepatology. These include “Sarin’s Classification of Gastric Varices”; variceal band ligation as primary prophylaxis which was a landmark NEJM paper;. He defined new disease entities, portal biliopathy and acute and chronic liver failure His seminal contributions on liver regeneration using growth factors have the potential for providing non-transplant options to ACLF patients. He has more than 470 publications, helped develop 18 major guidelines and edited 13 books. He is the founding Co-Chief Editor of Hepatology International. Prof. Sarin was privileged to mentor 86 fellows and 25 Ph.D. students, and 25 of these head or serve as teaching faculty, including many in the US. He started the APASL School of Hepatology and was instrumental in setting up a Dedicated Liver University, the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in India. ILBS was recently designated as the first WHO Collaborative Center globally in Liver Diseases. Prof. Sarin has been bestowed with Padma Bhushan (third highest civilian award of the country) by the Govt of India. He is a member of all the three science academies of the country. He has been a recipient of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar award, the highest Award in Science in India, The World Academy of Medical Sciences International Prize, EASL International Recognition Award and ‘Most Distinguished Physician from India” from the American Association of Physicians of India, Fograty Fellowship of the NIH to work at University of Yale, and Senior Fellowship of the Japanese Society for Promotion of Science to work at Chiba, Japan. He was instrumental in setting up the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), under the auspices of the Govt of Delhi. ILBS has been conferred the status of a Deemed-to be University by the Govt. of India and is the first dedicated ‘Liver University’, globally. ILBS has been designated as the first WHO Collaborative Center in the world in the field of Liver Diseases. Prof. Sarin has shown leadership roles in being the President of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology, Indian Association for the Study of the Liver, Asian Pacific Association of Liver (APASL) and Chairman Steering Committee of the APASL. Prof. Sarin was nominated to lead the Medical Council of India (MCI) as the Chairman of the Board of Governors, 2010-2011. He developed the ‘Vision 2015’ document for Medical Education in India and had introduced far reaching reforms.

Dr. Tetsuo Takehara

Dr. Tetsuo Takehara is a Professor of Medicine in the Department of Gastroenterology
and Hepatology at Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine Japan. He
graduated from Osaka University Medical School in 1984 and received clinical
training in internal medicine and gastroenterology at Osaka University Hospital and its
affiliated hospitals for several years. He obtained his Ph.D. in Medicine at Osaka
University in 1993, and went on to study as a postdoctoral fellow at the Massachusetts
General Hospital/Harvard Medical School, Division of Gastroenterology, Boston,
MA, from 1998 to 2000.
Dr. Takehara is a physician scientist in hepatology and gastroenterology and his major research interests include,
basic research on cell death and innate immunity and, clinically, viral and non-viral hepatitis, and hepatocellular
carcinoma (HCC). Currently, he studies the mechanistic links between hepatocyte apoptosis/autophagy and the
progression of liver disease to fibrosis and cancer. He also studies HBV/HCV virology and anti-viral strategies
using a sophisticated mouse model with a humanized liver. He directs and oversees the Osaka Liver Forum (OLF)
study, a large and comprehensive cohort study of hepatitis B/C and HCC patients at Osaka University Hospital and
more than 30 of its affiliated hospitals in the Kansai area. For example, the OLF study includes more than 5,000
patients being treated with pegylated interferon and ribavirin and more than 1,500 patients treated with direct-acting
antiviral combination therapies. His work has demonstrated a wide range of clinical evidence among this cohort for
the management of patients with viral hepatitis and HCC. He has published more than 300 basic science and
clinical articles in high-quality journals.
Currently, Dr. Takehara is the director of the Japan Society of Hepatology and has been the Editor-in Chief of
Hepatology Research since 2014.

Dr Masatoshi Tanaka graduated Kurume university school of medicine in 1979, and
received his PhD degree in Medical Science in 1989. His profession is a diagnosis and
treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). He started his carrier of percutaneous
ethanol injection (PEI) from 1985, intra-arterial therapy and chemotherapy from 1989,
and radiofrequency ablation from 1998. He was a director at the Dept. of
Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Kurume University Medical Center, and is now a director of Hepatology and
Clinical Research Center, Yokokura hospital since 2012. He was a board member of Liver Cancer Study Group of
Japan, Japanese Society of Gastraenterology, Hepatology and Ultrasonics in medicine, and also a director board
member of Asian Conference on Tumor Ablation, and organized 2nd ACTA meeting in 2015.

Dr. Takuji Torimura

Dr. Kaoru Tsuchiya

Kaoru Tsuchiya was graduated with M.D. degree in 1998 from Gunma university in
Japan. She obtained her Ph.D. degree from Graduate School of Medical Science,
University of Yamanashi in 2009. She has been working at Musashino Red Cross
Hospital since 2000 and became a deputy director of department of Gastroenterology
and Hepatology in 2011. From 2015 to 2017 she worked as a postdoctoral researcher in
medical university of Vienna, Austria. From April, 2017 she started working again at
Musashino Red Cross Hospital. Her research interests are "Diagnosis and treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma
(HCC)"."Nutorition in patients with HCC" and "Management of complications of liver cirrhosis". She usually
performs contrast enhanced ultrasonography with sonazoid. radiofrequency ablation (RFA). and antiangiogenic
systemic therapy together with many wonderful young doctors. In Musashino Red Cross Hospital more than 3000
patients received RFA and antiangiogenic systemic therapies for advanced HCC have already performed in 262
patients.

Dr. Yoshiyuki Ueno

Professor Yoshiyuki Ueno is currently Professor of Medicine, Head of Division of
Gastroenterology and Hepatology and Vice Director of Yamagata University Hospital.
He is the course director of PhD course in Gastroenterology, Postgraduate School of
Medicine Yamagata University. Professor Ueno has been engaged in the field of
Hepatology since after his graduation of medical school at Tohoku University in 1987.
After obtaining PhD degree in 1991, he had been a research fellow at Mayo Clinic,
Rochester, USA. Since after his return to Japan, he continues to work as an academic
researcher. Currently, he is an associate editor of Hepatology Research, Hepatology
International, and Seminars in Liver Diseases. He has been actively involved in more than 20 international trials on
antiviral treatment of chronic hepatitis B and C. He is one of the AASLD inaugural Fellow, and first Japanese
hepatologist to become both AASLD and AGA Fellow. He has been involved in several steering committees of
academic societies. He has received numerous local, national and international research awards. He has published
more than 250 peer-reviewed papers in international journals including 2 in PNAS, 9 in Gastroenterology, 22 in
Hepatology, 3 in J Hepatol, 22 in AJP.

Dr. Khin Maung Win

Prof. Khin Maung Win was professionally trained by Prof. Neil Finlayson in the
Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Scotland and Prof. Dame Sheila Sherlock in Liver
Unit, Royal Free Hospital of London. He obtained his MRCP in 1984 and FRCP in
1997 respectively. As a specialist in hepatology, he treats patients with various kinds
of liver diseases throughout his profession.
He worked in the Government Service until he retired as the Professor and Head of
Department of Hepatology, Yangon General Hospital (YGH) in 2007. After his
retirement, he established the Yangon GI & Liver Centre, which is well-equipped with the state-of- the-art
diagnostic laboratory and initiated his private clinical practices. He devotes his life primarily in patient care and
conducts clinical services in many hospitals in Yangon.
Being a leading clinician of Myanmar, he is involved in several multi-centre clinical trials including the current
AHCC 06 Trial, entitled Phase III Multi Centre Open-Label Randomized Controlled Trial of Selective Internal
Radiation Therapy (SIRT) versus Sorafenib in Locally Advanced Hepatocellular Carcinoma (SIRveNIB).
Dr. Peihong Wu
Professor and Direcetor of Medical Imaging and Image-guided Therapy,

Areas of Interest
Dr. Wu has focused his clinical expertise on treating various solid malignancies,
especially in liver cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer, thyroid tumor, renal cancer,
prostate cancer, and uterine fibroids, by interventional and image-guided minimally
invasive therapy combined with bio-immunotherapy.
Educational and Career Experiences
Dr. Wu received his medical degree from Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences in 1982. He completed his
Fellowship of Radiology as well as Oncology in Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center in 1988, and start working
as a radiologist and oncologist since then. In 1993, he was appointed Associate Professor and Vice Director of
Radiology, and in 1998, he was promoted to Professor, and Director of Medical Imaging and Interventional
Radiology at Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center. From 1999 to 2000, he was visiting scholar in Imaging
Division at MD Anderson Cancer Centre (USA). Dr. Wu also serves as Visiting Professor in the department of
Imaging Sciences, University of Rochester Medical Center, USA, and University of Toronto, Canada.
Honors and Awards
Dr. Wu has authored or co-authored more than 200 papers, as first author or corresponding author for more than 50
SCI papers. He has published 6 books and more than 20 book chapters in his field. He has won many grants as a PI
or Co-PI, including National High Technology Research and so on. He is currently the editorial board member of
many journals.
He was the chairman of Asian Conference on Tumor Ablation 2017. He is the founder and first Co-chairman of
Asia-Pacific Association of Image-guided Minimally Invasive Therapy in Oncology, the President of the Society of
Minimally Invasive Therapy in Oncology, Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, and the member of Standing
Committee of Society of Immunotherapy in Oncology, Guangdong Anti-Cancer Association.
