Ranger Roundup Dr. William Wagner, Principal Lakewood High School Patty Eberl, PTA President
14100 Franklin Boulevard, Lakewood, Ohio 44107 216.529.4028
Greetings from the Principal’s Office PLEASE GIVE US A CALL! (The critical importance of calling in when your student is absent) If your student is going to stay home or needs to be released early for any reason, it is VERY important that you call the Attendance Office as soon as possible the same day. Call one of the numbers listed below. The earlier in the day, the better.
We have centralized our attendance procedures and created a new Attendance Office in room B115 on the first floor of the new West Wing. Students needing Release forms (for doctor’s appointments, etc.) or Scheduled Absence forms (for pre-planned absences) should report to B115. IMPORTANT CHANGE: THERE ARE NEW ATTENDANCE CALL-IN PHONE LINES! Please note: the numbers for calling in your son or daughter’s absence. In previous years, atten-dance was broken down by the student’s house office. Now, attendance is cen-tralized in one location, in an effort to serve your needs better and maintain more accurate attendance records for our students. Together, with your help, we will continue to improve what we do… Every Period, Every Day! Sincerely yours with Ranger Pride,
Bill Wagner

All courses and programs are offered by Lakewood High School without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, creed, gender, marital status, disability, or age in its education programs, activities, employment policies or admission policies and practices as required under Title VI and Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. 2
District Message
Some of the concerns from the meeting participants centered on class sizes. I shared with the audience that although some class sizes throughout the district are still larger than we would like, we are grateful to have received money from the federal Education Jobs Fund that allowed us to hire 7.5 teachers in September. These teachers were placed in elementary classrooms that had the largest number of students thus alleviating some of the problem. It is important to remember that this money is one-time money that will cover the teachers’ salaries for this year and next school year only. Despite our district’s challenges that I laid out at the meetings, student achievement continues to improve in our schools. For ex-ample, earlier this fall academic honors were announced for the National Merit Scholarship Competition and the Advanced Place-ment Scholars program. Lakewood High has a long history of turning out stellar scholars who are recognized by these prestigious programs and this year was no exception. Four LHS seniors were named National Merit Semifinalists, three were named National Merit Commended Scholars and 35 were named AP Scholars. The National Merit Semifinalists – Brian Brink, Michael Pizzo, Kevin Ritter and Carter Strong – scored in the top 1% of PSAT scores in the state and are now eligible to compete for more than $16 million in scholarship money. Congratulations to these students who are among many that make our community proud! Dr. P. Joseph Madak Superintendent Board of Education Betsy Shaughnessy, President Matthew John Markling, Vice President Linda Beebe Edward Favre John Kamkutis
MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT: Thank you to those of you who attended one of our Community Conversation sessions in October. It is very helpful for us to keep in touch with your thoughts. I will continue to share my thoughts with you here and in my Superintendent’s Message that can be found on our district web site, www.lakewoodcityschools.org. Part of the discussion at these meetings dealt with Ohio’s budget problems in our current economy and the potential impacts on our future state funding for our schools.

Is it really November already? Hard to believe that the first quarter of school is over and this month will be parent/teacher conferences. This is the time when parents can have a one-on-one meeting with their child’s teachers. Please take the time to attend your student’s conferences and get involved with their education. Our next PTA meeting is Tuesday, November 16 at 7:00 PM in LRC South (Room A105, West Wing). The far west door will be open, first room on the right hand side. Please plan on attending this meeting. At this month’s meeting we will be choosing a nominating committee which will be responsible for proposing a slate of PTA officers for the 2011 - 2012 school year. It may seem early in the year to already be talking about next year but since we only meet four times a year, we have to start the process early so we can vote at our last meeting in March.. We will also be choosing a committee to select our Educator of the Year and Helping Hands award recipients. These are important committees and we can use your help. Dr. Wagner will also be giving his report on all the current happenings at LHS. November is the month of giving thanks and I am very thankful for our great group of PTA officers. These individuals are the backbone of LHS PTA and they give their time and energy to make things happen this year. THANK YOU! I hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving. Patty Eberl 216-226-4320

Staff Appreciation Dinner With their busy conference schedules, many teachers and staff do not have time to eat beforehand so the PTA provides nutritious meals so they are well fed and ready to meet with parents after a long day at school. This is one of the many staff appreciation events we host each year at LHS. We need volunteers to help with food preparation, set-up, serving, and clean-up. This is a great way to meet the teachers in a casual relaxed atmosphere. If you are available to help in any way, please contact Bernadette Smith 216-226-1320 or email@[email protected]
Accepting Nominations for Educator of the Year and Helping Hands Does your child have a favorite teacher who inspires them? Are you impressed with what one of our teachers is doing in the classroom? Is there a LHS staff member who goes above and beyond their duty? Then the PTA invites you to nominate them for the LHS PTA Educator of the Year or Helping Hands Awards. Each year, Educator of the Year Awards are given to outstanding teachers and Helping Hands Awards are given to excep-tional non-teaching personnel who impact our students’ lives in a positive way. If you would like to nominate someone for these awards, please email Patty Eberl @ [email protected] with the nominee’s name and why they are deserving of this award. We appreciate as much feedback as possible from students, parents and LHS staff. This is always a tough choice to make each year but it’s much easier with your help. Thank you.
FAQS HELP DISPEL DRESS CODE CONFUSION Over the past several weeks, there has been considerable confusion and misinformation regarding the LHS dress code and its enforcement this year. A list of “Frequently Asked Questions” (FAQs) has been developed that addresses many of these issues and others that have come up often since the school year began. The list will continue to grow as new topics arise so please check back frequently. See a screen shot of the page below. Go to the LHS page and click on the FAQs tab on the left side of the page.

REMINDER to PARENTS When parents email teachers, it is helpful if you put your student’s name in the subject line. Many emails are stopped by our junk mail/spam filtering system and your patience and understanding is greatly appreciated should you not receive a
reply. Follow-up calls are helpful. In addition, we encourage parents to please understand that teachers are not permitted by law to share confidential information regarding students over email—phone calls are better for in-depth
conversations regarding student performance.
Holiday Choral Concerts
The 9th Grade Choir and the Concert Band (mostly 9th graders) will have a concert on Thursday, Dec. 2 at 7:30 pm in the Civic Auditorium. This will be the high school debut of both ensembles and promises to be a lovely concert. Soloists will be featured, and several choral songs include a flute obbligato.
The annual Lakewood High School Choral Holiday concert will be on
Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at 7:30 pm in the Civic Auditorium. Featured will be the Symphonic Mixed Choir, Symphonic Treble Choir, Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, and Vive L’Four. The music to be performed includes both tra-ditional and new music, everything from the Renaissance to “Up on the House-top.” The concert will begin with the traditional candlelight processional in the house of the auditorium. Also, in keeping with tradition, alumni of the choir will be invited to participate with the singing of “Carol of the Bells,” “O Come, All Ye Faithful,” the Lutkin Benediction and the Lakewood High School “Alma Mater.” We invite everyone to come and enjoy an evening of beautiful choral music with our talented Lakewood High vocal ensembles. Tickets are $3.00 for adults, $2.00 for students, and $1.00 for senior citizens.

The LHS orchestra program is off to a wonderful start for the 2010-2011 year. The LHS Orchestra kicks its season off with the POPS Concert, which features LHS orchestras with 8th grade students on October 13th at 7:30pm, at the Civic Auditorium. The POPS Concert also marks the beginning of the program’s annual sponsorship drive. Always aiming high, our goal this year is $15,000.00! Any donation will help us reach that goal. To participate, see any orchestra student for a sponsorship form. Help the LHS Orchestra program with our only fund-raiser of the year! Once again, LHS orchestra students are standing out at the Ohio Music Educators Association (OMEA) Northeast Regional Orchestra. 14 students from Lakewood were accepted into the orchestra, with 6 being chosen to participate in the OMEA All-State orchestra, held in Cincinnati. From each of the five regions, only 16 students are sent to All-State, and Lakewood High Students cap-tured six of these coveted spots. This is the most out of any school in Northeast Ohio! Those going to All-State include Andy Peng (Principal Violin and Concertmaster), Carter Strong (Principal Viola), Al Rodri-guez (Principal Bass), Hannah Gallovic (2nd Chair Cello), Chelsea Polk (3rd Chair Cello), and Katie Read-ing (Harp). Students Abby Wimbiscus (Violin), Devon Caskey (Viola), Danny Toner (Cello), and Moira Horn (Cello) were also selected as All-State alternates. Students rounding out the successful group in-clude Kendall King and Kent Dockus (Violin), Bea Aldrich (Viola), and Matt Sims (Cello). The Northeast Regional Orchestra concert will be held November 7th at 3:30 pm, at Cleveland State University’s Waetjen Auditorium. Come see these students proudly represent LHS at this prestigious regional event! Submitted by Beth Hankins LHS Orchestra Director

Health Careers Technology – Student News
Students Earn Credentials! *Congratulations to the hard working students in the Class of 2011! The group of 21 students ALL earned the “CNA” credential – Certified Nursing Assistant – after satisfactorily completing the formal training in the classroom and in the clinical area at St. Augustine Manor. *In mid-June, (yes – after the school year ended) 17 of those 21 students took the state licensing exam and ALL 17 earned a second credential “STNA” – State Tested Nurse Aide. That’s a 100% pass rate for state licensing! FANTASTIC! *These students are now eligible to apply for entry level health care positions because they meet the criteria that employers and college educators most desire. The starting wage for these positions is typically in the $10 - $13 per hour range. *Best wishes to this determined group and keep up the great work as you get a head start on your future -Mrs. J. Smith, teacher Mohammad Ali, STNA; Kendall Atzberger, STNA; Emily Buelow, STNA; Susan Dang, STNA; Amanda Dreistadt, STNA; Naiem Elkhatib, STNA; Legee Gee-Bronsart, CNA; Ashley Gross, STNA; Jocelyn Kelly, STNA; Halle Kessler, CNA; Amanda Miliceveic, STNA; Paige Morana, STNA; Brianna Morlan, CNA; Tamara Nazimova, STNA; Marianna Polichuk, STNA; Stephani Predl, STNA; NicK Ramsey, CNA; Emmalee Rinehart, STNA; Ameer Salti, STNA; Raniea Sulieman, STNA; and Briana Weir, STNA. (Check out the West Shore Career Tech office for more information. See if we can help jumpstart your future! )
Students Donate Time to Raise Club Funds *On Sunday, September 19TH students “worked” at Cedar Point Resorts performing house-keeping duties to earn funds to support our class activities this year. In all, 20 students and 3 parents worked a 7.5 hour day in the resort hotels at Cedar Point. The wages earned are donated to the program through the Cedar Point Booster Bucks fundraising program. *These students and supportive parent chaperones signed up to donate their time to raise funds rather than sell items to profit the program. *Funds will be used to pay for program related field trips, supplies for service projects and the end of year banquet. THANK YOU STUDENTS & PARENTS FOR YOUR PARTICIPATION AND SUPPORT
PARENTS: PLEASE NOTIFY SCHOOL OF FAMILY CHANGES It is really important that the school be notified of catastrophic experiences in your student’s lives affecting their
performance at school (i.e. serious illness of a family member, or expected/unexpected death of a parent or sibling, etc.) so teachers are aware and can be more sensitive to that student during this difficult time.
GUIDANCE Reminder to all Seniors: * Monday November 8, 2010 is the deadline for transcripts/applications to
be submitted to Guidance to be processed by the December 1st college deadline.
* Friday, December 3, 2010 is the deadline for transcripts/applications to be processed by the January 1st college deadlines.
* Register and take the ACT and SAT. Check to see if your college choices re-quire SAT II tests.
* Don’t wait until the last minute to turn in college applications. The guidance department needs 2 weeks to process your transcript requests.
* Have a calendar to keep track of deadlines. Many university scholarships have a December 1st deadline.
