Hot on the heels of last year’s brilliantly quirky ‘Robin Hood and the Singing Nun’ we are proud to present the fangtastic Dracula ...the Panto. Written by Jim Sperinck who is well known for his skewed take on the traditional pantomime story (other memorable titles include ‘Panto at the OK Corral’, ‘The Pompeii Panto’ and the ‘Canterbury Tales Panto’.) Dracula ...the Panto will not disappoint in the humour stakes (get it?). Rehearsals began way back in October and it was great to see another crop of talented new faces join the cast. And here we are, almost 4 months later, on performance night. We’ve had a fantastic time together — and we can’t wait for it to all start again next autumn! So sit back, enjoy the panto and thank you for your continued support of our little group.

ACT 1In a strangely Cumbrian-looking village somewhere in Transylvania, Dame Rosie Glow welcomes a handsome stranger named Richard to the Flying Mouse Inn. He could be a perfect match for Dame Rosie’s daughter Sonia - but somebody else has his eye on her... The wicked

vampire Count Dracula is looking for a new bride. He sends Boris, his werewolf butler, to kidnap Sonia. But with only a pair of hapless cooks

to help him, Boris struggles to capture the right girl.

Dracula will have his bride! But who will it be? Dame Rosie seems keen to volunteer, but the Count is still determined to get his teeth into poor Sonia. Our heroes will need a cunning plan and a little bit of magic from the good Fairy Garlic to put a stop to Dracula’s evil plans (and terrible jokes)

once and for all…

Please turn off mobile phones during the performance... anyone caught texting during the performance will become a bride of Dracula

Dracula is an 1897 gothic horror novel by irish author Bram Stoker. Famous for introducing the character of the vampire Count Dracula, the novel tells the story of Dracula’s attempt to relocate from Transylvania to England, and the battle between Dracula and a small group of men and women led by professor Abraham van Helsing.

Although Stoker did not invent the vampire, he defined its modern form. He came across the name Dracula in his reading on Romanian history and despite it being a work of fiction, the references to the Transylvanian-born Vlad III Dracula of Wallachia are obvious to see.

During his reign (1456–1462), “Vlad the Impaler” is said to have killed from 40,000 to 100,000 European civilians (political rivals, criminals and anyone else he considered “useless to humanity”), mainly by using his favourite method of impaling them on a sharp pole.

The name “Dracula” is derived from a chivalric order called ‘The order of the dragon’ and means “son of Dracul”. Stoker chose this name to replace the name (Count Wampyr) that he had originally intended to use for his villain.

We hope you’ve enjoyed your time with us this evening — Broughton Drama Group has existed in one form or another for many years. It had an enthusiastic revival in the mid-nineties and since then has produced a very popular annual Pantomime... and since 2005 has hosted a successful One Act Play season in the Summer. We may be an amateur company but there’s a high standard of abilities both on and off stage. There is always a great response for the cast and crew of our productions and the shows are well attended. The group has an elected committee who take care of the administrative side of affairs. Anyone can join the committee and appointments usually take place at our Annual General Meeting which takes place in the Spring. The current committee (2012-2013) are:

Kathy Bartlett - Chair Laura Collar - SecretaryJennifer Salder - TreasurerDavid HickinsonRussell HoldenHilary HannahJenny Acott

We have regular committee meetings throughout the year. If you’d like to join the drama group please speak to one of the members or send us an email and we’ll ‘sign you up’!

Would you like to join Broughton Drama Group? Everyone’s welcome...whether acting or behind the scenes! If you fancy assisting with lighting, sound, stage management, scenery, make-up & costumes we’d be happy to see you... and if you feel more adventurous, what about writing or directing future productions? Look out for forthcoming productions and give it a whirl. We can heartily recommend it. You’ll have a great time and make lifelong friends. Send us an email. We’ll keep you informed of forthcoming productions, auditions and drama group news.We have great ideas for drama workshops, play read-throughs and even a talent show but need people to get involved to make them happen. We really need committee members at the moment, so if you’d like to have a say in the running of the BDG please come along to our AGM in April — anyone can attend.
