1. INTRODUCTION

For Petra Summer Program 2014, The "Emerald of the Equator: Indonesia in Contemporary Perspectives" is a multidisciplinary subject is like being the world traveler in that exciting travel program you see on TV doing a two-week coverage on Indonesia, particularly on one of its oldest yet most vibrant cities: Surabaya. Okay, there may not be a camera following you around, but you will do just as much.

You will get the chance to both broaden your knowledge by learning from the experts in various disciplines and experience everything first hand. You will feel the warmth of its diverse population, the pulse of its urban life, and the splendor of its natural attractions. Imagine making your way around its unique architectural heritage, painting some batik, enjoying some delicious local dishes, or perhaps making some. You will discover its potentials and you will understand what makes this city, and Indonesia, special among others.

To have this engaging learning experience, you will need to attend the 32-hour classroom meeting and participate on all the enrichment cultural activities.

If you are a student of our partner universities and have a comprehensible English proficiency, you are welcome to join. If you are from other universities, please contact us.

2. COURSE DETAILS

2.1 Course Title:Emerald of the Equator: Indonesia in Contemporary Perspectives

2.2 Course Goal:This 32-hour course will provide students with contemporary perspectives on Indonesia, its people and culture. It will also cultivate awareness of the potentials of Indonesia, in the art and creative industry, as well as in business, where Asia is becoming the economic engine of the world.

2.3 Course Description:Indonesia’s unrivalled sheer tropical beauty and rich cultural diversity lure people from various backgrounds to explore the archipelago. Across the country, people from various ethnic backgrounds live side by side in diverse places ranging from sun-kissed beaches to cloud-surrounded mountains, from sparsely-populated villages to crowded urban centers, making Indonesian a world of its own. As one of the most populous countries in the world, Indonesia also beckons numerous transnational corporations, which are aware of its economic potentials.

Designed as a multidisciplinary subject, this course will examine the dynamics and potentials of Indonesia. Taught by professors/lecturers from various disciplines – anthropology, cultural studies, arts, architecture, and economics, this introductory course will also explore how Indonesia’s culture and resources entangle the country in the process of globalization, in which the production, circulation, and exchange of goods and ideas from various parts of the world are integrated.

3. EVENTS

3.1 Campus TourPIC: Michelle Wangsa Aywen

3.1.1 ConceptThe concept of the campus tour is close and personal since each tour leaders only have 3 to 4 students. The interaction between the tour leaders and the PSP students are friendlier and the PSP students can talk to the other participants.

The groupings of each of the groups are made by the committee to ensure that each group is diverse in nationality and even from different university. The professors are invited on the campus tour but they have the option to decline.

The routes and the script are predetermined prior to the campus tour to avoid traffic jam on the lift or awkward silence. The places shown on the campus tour are mostly important places that they will need to know for their activities’ venue.

The scripts are flexible and only act as a basic guidelines. The international student's handbook given to them contains all the information they needed to know about Petra during their stay here, and it contains Mini Dictionary for Survival Indonesia.

There is also a brief photo session on the Mural paintings on the P building for each of the groups.

3.1.3 Evaluation3.1.3.1 Positive The concept is proven well suited for few participants in small groups. Since we only have 33 participants, the flow of the campus tour are easily

managed without much traffic. The participants also showed enthusiasm in Indonesian culture.

3.1.3.2 Negative We are so ahead of schedule because the previous session was also ahead of

schedule.

3.1.3.3 OverallMISSING INFO

3.1.4 Recommendation I recommend all the tour leaders to have at least one or two places that they

personally want to show the students that are not in the predetermined routes

to fill in the time if they are ahead of schedule or if the participants are interested.

3.2 Ice BreakingPIC: Audi Chandra

3.2.1 ConceptIce Breaking is one of the session in Petra Summer Program which held in 11 August 2014 in Petra T building 5th floor. In this event, the participants, from Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Indonesia, would play an interactive game that would require participants to interact with other Petra Summer Program participants and committee. In the Petra Summer Program 2014, 9 Square was chosen for the Ice breaking. It was expected that the participants could interact more with the other participants and committee. The rules of 9 Square:

1. Each Petra Summer Program participant and committee received paper with 9 Square

2. In each square, there is a detail that needs to be fulfilled before a person can sign on the square.

3. The goal of this game is to have all of the 9 square signed.

3.2.2 RundownMISSING INFO

3.2.3 Evaluation3.2.3.1 Positive The games are making the participants to interact and know other participants. The participants were excited with the event.

3.2.3.2 Negative The event started too early so there is no time for preparation. The event was ended too fast.

3.2.3.3 OverallOverall, this event was running smoothly even though the event started 30 minutes earlier. This event commented as successful although it ends too fast due to some of the participants from the same universities collaborate together.

3.2.4 Recommendation Make the event as the proper event so that it can be prepared earlier. Give the event a proper incentive either it is a funny punishment or prizes

according to the situation and the type of games.

Petra Christian University

3.3 SPICEPIC: Audi Chandra

3.3.1 ConceptSPICE is the subcommittees from Industrial Engineering Petra program in Petra Summer Program 2014. In this event, SPICE acts as the buddy of the Petra Summer Program participants during International Vaganza and as the coach for the International Seminar. In International Vaganza, SPICE really helped all of the Petra Summer Program participants especially with the cooking and the 3D island and decoration set-up.

3.3.2 RundownMISSING INFO

3.3.3 Evaluation3.3.3.1 Positive Really helping the participants with the International Vaganza. Petra Summer Program participants are able to venture Surabaya freely with

SPICE helps.

3.3.3.2 Negative The coordination is complicated. Most of the SPICE students also cannot help freely due to their own original

SPICE schedule.

3.3.3.3 OverallOverall, SPICE really helps Petra Summer Program participants in International Vaganza; however, in the International Seminar, all of them cannot become a proper coach due to a sudden notice.

3.3.4 Recommendation Let the committee from PSP to take SPICE role next time.

3.4 Opening CeremonyPIC: Stanley Miracle Boenawan

3.4.1 ConceptThe Opening Ceremony of Petra Summer Program 2014 was held on 11 August 2014 inside the Petra Little Theatre room (B building 2nd floor). The event was held to welcome the participants of Petra Summer Program 2014 from Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and Indonesia and accept them as the part and family of PSP 2014. The

Petra Christian University

Page 17: Draft Psp Report

performances given by the Petra students and non-Petra students (ranging from Acoustic, Choir, Dance, and Percussion) were prepared to give the performance that would amaze the participants. After the performance, the Head of Petra Summer Program 2014 would give the opening speech to open the event officially.

participants inside

3.4.4.3 OverallOverall, the opening ceremony of PSP was a big success with the performers performed at their best and the audiences were satisfied with what has been shown to them. No negative responses or comments were given and the committee gave the best efforts to achieve the best results.

3.4.5 Recommendation Let the committee from PSP to take SPICE role next time.

menu that is not spicy and overly spiced. Since the caterer is fixed to only Happuch Catering, the best choice is the Nasi Jagung menu. The Nasi Jagung menu consists of nasi jagung / putih (50 / 50), bening kelor soup, sate sapi kelapa, osik ayam, urap, pepes tongkol, krupuk puli, sambal, sup buah dan pudding, and mineral water.

3.8 BatikPIC: Sally Wisana

3.8.1 ConceptBatik making is one of the cultural activities in Petra Summer Program which held in 13th August 2014 in Petra library hall 6th floor. In this event, the participants, from Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Indonesia, would be introduced to Indonesia cultural heritage that already being recognized by UNESCO which is Batik. The participants would be given a short lecture by an expert on the field and the head of Batik Community in East Java, Ir. Lintu Tulistyantoro M.Ds. After hearing the presentation, the participants tried to create their own Batik. It was expected that the participants could know more about Batik and appreciate Batik.

3.8.4 Evaluation3.8.4.1 Positive The materials were well prepared and the amount was enough. The presentation slide was visual and informative. The participants were excited with the event.

3.8.4.2 Negative The speaker suddenly appointed the translator to be the speaker of the lecture

at the D-day. One of the roll cable borrowed from UPPK was broken, so the committees had

to borrow it from other person. The electricity socket was limited which cause the cables spread near the way

and at the end, one of the participants tripped and the wax spilled on the table. The frame (30cm x30 cm) was too big for the cloth and the cloth's size was

various. The batik color supposedly was black, but the trainer was run out of black color,

so it was substituted with green-blue color.

3.8.4.3 OverallOverall, this event was running smoothly although the event started not according to the rundown. In the rundown, the event should start at 13.00, however according to the participants' syllabus, the event started at 13.30. Most of the participants also seemed so enthusiast to create their own Batik.

3.8.5 Recommendation Find place that has an adequate electricity socket so the participant will not get

tripped. Having more time to do the Batik. For each session, the time was 90 minutes

and that is not enough for almost all of the participants to finish the Batik until the end. In addition, mini fan might work to help the Batik dry faster.

3.10.1 ConceptMural Art is one of the cultural activities in Petra Summer Program which held in 18th

August 2014. This event was located at Stren Kali, Bratang Tangkis, Surabaya near the sluice of PDAM. In this opportunity, the participants from Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Indonesia will learn how to do the Mural after they got a short lecture about what Mural is and how t do the Mural. The participants will learn how to do painting on the wall accompanied by Pak Obed as the lecture and some DKV’s students from Petra Christian University.

Petra Christian University

Page 32: Draft Psp Report

3.10.2 Evaluation3.10.2.1 Positive Materials were well prepared. All the DKV’s students and the Lecture arrived on time. There was no problem with the permission and villagers at Stren Kali. The participants was excited on painting.

3.10.2.2 Negative The participants arrived late. Uneven participants distribution for each paint. The mural location is near prostitution area.

3.10.3 Overall PerformanceOverall, this event was running smoothly although the participants arrived late to the location. The participants were exited and enjoyed doing the Mural even though some of them were not. There are enough committees that joined to do the Mural and help the DKV’s to be able to communicate with the participants.

3.10.4 Recommendation Find better places with better security. Divide the participants into a group first, so the distribution for each paint will

be equal.

3.11 Movie ScreeningPIC: Kathleen Kwarso

3.11.1 Concept

The Raid is one of the famous Indonesian movie. The concept of this movie screening is so that the participant from different country who are popular with their entertainment world can see that Indonesia can also make a very cool movie. The highlight of this movie is on the choreography so the audience will not be bored. The proposed idea is welcome the participants with an ambiance same with the movie theatre. After the movie, we have a talk show with Mr. John which is the one who draw The Raid visual novel or what we can call comic book.

3.11.4 Evaluation3.11.4.1 Positive The movie was intense, the participant took them seriously. Mr. John, the guest speaker can speak English fluently and he even

demonstrates how to make the comic. We were able to get the book and the signing process went well.

3.11.4.2 Negative The participants come earlier than scheduled and we are not fully prepared with

the attendance list. Many of the participant didn’t join the screening. Took a little long to set up the laptop for the talkshow. The poster that was printed was too small. Only few people help arrange the room in the morning.

3.11.5 Overall PerformanceOverall, this event was running smoothly although the participants arrived too early on the movie set and they need to wait until 9 O clock for the movie to start. The participant looked bored at first , but towards the end the participant started to get interested in the movie. During the talk show with Mr. John, at first the audience was a little bit bored but, towards the end the audience ask a lot about comic book making and shows lots of interest. The book signing process went very well.

3.11.6 Recommendation If possible, ask the guest speaker to come early and set up the laptop for the talk

show before the event began. Promote about the event the day before so the participant will be interested to

come. Prepare the attendance list the day before. There is no need to print the poster as we can show the picture in the slide

show.

Page 38: Draft Psp Report

3.13.1 ConceptThe venue was at the stage of Petra Parade at greenfield. There were 3 main activities conducted on the stage. First was “Authentic Games”. On this activity, we played the authentic games from each country. They determined 1 representatives per country to explain about the games on the stage and be the judge of the game as well. The players were the audiences who were interested to try the authentic games. The committee decided the games for each country, prepared the equipments and prizes for winners. However, the representatives decided how the games are played. The games were as follows: Indonesia- Bakiak; Japan- Goldfish Scooping; Taiwan- Diablo; Korea- Ddakji. The second activity was “Traditional Costume 101”. Each country determined 1 woman and 1 man to wear the traditional costume and did catwalk. They also need to decide 1 more representatives to explain the traditional costume after the models did their catwalk. The third activity is performances. Basically, each country need to prepare a 5-minutes performance. In this case, they all danced. They submitted the music file to committee and plan their preparation by themselves. Some of them have even prepared the performance before they come to Indonesia. The Koreans came from two different universities and so they have prepared to different performance as well. Because they got a large number of people, it didn’t matter for them to perform two different dances.

At first, EH 207 was the waiting room for all participants to wait before they go to the stage, but because there was a Korean participants who was sick, therefore the room could not be too crowded. So, all of the Korean still wait at EH 207, while the others wait at the white tent behind the stage.

Some of the participants were not really standby when they need to come up to the stage. Consequently, when the MC scall them, MCs need to wait for a few seconds before they really came up to the stage. The performances of the participants boost the numbers of audience. There was a sudden changed plan of the closing. We change the ordinary closing with a photo session of all participants who wear traditional costume. But because it was so sudden, the participant who wear traditional costume didn’t know that they should stay on their costume and standby for the costume. So when the photo-session came, they were not ready.

3.13.6 RecommendationIt could have been better if we could conduct technical rehearsal or dress rehearsal for this event. Unfortunately we couldn’t because we didn’t have time to (it was used all the time and no plan to conduct technical rehearsal and dress rehearsal on stage from the very beginning). It could have been better for the goldfish scooping game and Ddakji game to have a live cam so that the audience can clearly see what is actually happening.

3.14 Closing CeremonyPIC: Nuansa Citra

3.14.1 ConceptBasically, there is no specific concept for closing ceremony of Petra Summer Program 2014. However, the idea of closing ceremony for this year is to gather the participants and the committee into a memorable closing moment. This thought leads event division to make the whole committee do some performances as a present for the participants.

3.14.4 Evaluation3.14.4.1 Positive The positive side of having this kind of closing ceremony is, there is no gap

between participants and committee. All of them blend into one part and it makes each of them feel the intimacy of this program itself.

3.14.4.2 Negative Having the concept of closing ceremony for a bit last minute is not really a good

idea. Even the event itself is not really complicated, event division still must do coordination with some divisions because the whole committee must attend this ceremony and must understand what is going to happen.

3.14.5 Overall PerformanceOverall, the closing ceremony went well. Happiness and sadness blend into one. Not only for the participants, but also for the committee. However, event division believes those moments are the sign that Petra Summer Program 2014 is memorable and unforgettable.

3.14.6 RecommendationAs event division, I recommend to make the concept of closing ceremony from the beginning as well. Because not only for the event division, but all the committee might need to do coordination, especially if some divisions want to get the slot to say something.

4. CONCLUSION4.1 EvaluationOverall, PSP is leaving an okay impression to the participants4.1.1 Positive It works (although barely holding?)
