Dragon Boat Festival is a major Chinese festival celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th month of the Lunisolar Chinese calendar. This year, 2013, the festival falls on June 23rd. The festival day is recognized as a public holiday in main land China. In the Republic of China, the festival was also celebrated as "Poets' Day" in honor of Qu Yuan, who is known as China's first poet.

Festival commemorates the life and death of the famous Chinese scholar Qu Yuan . The best known traditional story holds that the poet committed suicide by drowning himself in the Miluo River. People tried to save him in boats. Every year, the boat festival is celebrated to commemorate this attempt at rescuing Qu Yuan.
